Just to clarify: This method works only if the car is unlocked (via the app) and the 12v is completely dead. It WILL work if the car is unlocked the 12v is alive and working but at that point you can just open your frunk through the screen. The FRUNK will NOT OPEN if the car is LOCKED with a healthy 12v battery using the battery method shown!
Get the battery here if you can't get into your Tesla!

Thanks for that important clarification
Now I’m confused, if the battery is dead. The car won’t unlock so this will never work?
the tesla knows when the car battery is dead so it will work! @@pj4433
The tesla knows when the 12v is dead so you can open the frunk! @@pj4433
Phew! I was worried that a thief with a small battery could open any Frunk they wanted to!
One thing to note: you should set a calendar event to periodically take your jump start battery inside to recharge. The last thing you want is for it to be dead the day you need it.
Good call!
how do you do that
Yep 😊
These batteries are lithium, I had a few instances where the booster battery is weak especially during the cold season. Some of them includes an auxiliary adaptor, so I kept my ICE car booster connected to the “cigarette” lighter adapter that turns on when the car is and charges the booster. I haven’t figure out what to do with myself Tesla yet since it should be in the frunk. For now, I have AAA coverage for both of our Tesla and ICE car since they are both out of the road service / warranty and both has the original battery. 4+ for Tesla and 9 years for our BMW.
I not a tesla driver, but I have a jump starter in my car, I charge it maybe once a year, they should hold charge for up to 3 years or more depending on the brand. you don't need it to be charging the battery all the time, it will reach the cycle life and will be dead when you need it the most. Its like charging your ev battery everyday, even when its full, eventually you will reach the end of life sooner than the original timeframe
You also need to tell your viewers that the jump starter needs to be kept charged by charging it every other month or so. More frequent in extreme heat or cold. And they should always keep sentry mode on to keep criminals from accessing your frunk.
Tesla should really make that option a type of physical key so that only the owner can open it.
Agree I don’t know why they don’t. Or maybe an rfid for the key card for it to auto open.
Chris, I've watched your channel for a number of years now and this one just prompted me to check my battery which is over 14 volts and order the A23. Thanks again for this information.
Super useful vid. Thanks man!
I had already done this with the same A23 battery. Well explained and informative video!
That jump stater works great!
Way to go Chris! Good info.
Nice video, great info!
Chris, you are a mountain of knowledge! I learn a ton from your videos all the time! 🤯
Awesome! Thank you!
Thanks for the tips
Great video. Thanks Chris!
You're welcome!
Most helpful. Thank you.
Much appreciated ✨️ definitely more than a thumbs up 👍 👍👍👍👍👍👍
This is great! Cant wait to go try this on other Teslas and see what goods they have!
Good points my friend
Much appreciated Chris!
ELECTROCUTED! LOL, I like your humor. Well thought out video, thanks
Great content!
Great training
This video is great. The man literally covers every base possible with a dash of humor.
Thanks for this!
You’re welcome !
I had the misfortune of a terrible head on accident with my Model 3 on the driver side due to a red light runner. I thought I was so prepared at the tow yard with my battery and jump starter, but the front was so mangled I could not even find those two leads. I kept the cover as a reminder, the leads got ripped off and lost somewhere. Cut up my hands looking for them.
The only way I got into the car was that since the windows were vented after the airbags went off I found a long piece of junk with an angled end to pull the emergency release from inside while bending the window back. I got the trunk open by hitting the 'kidnap button,' which was hard since the Highway Patrol filled up the interior of my car with the junk from the other one, also got all cut up from this...
To try and make a positive out of it if you do get into an accident open the glovebox and GRAB THE USB/SDCard whatever has your dashcam footage. In my case there was a fight over who was at fault, and if I could not get the USB that day it would have been a massive pain to then try and get the video evidence later.
Also please just because you have a green light does not mean it is safe...
Great stuff, I have a battery jump bank, but couldn't figure out how/where to safely store a 9v battery... the little A123 batt in a baggie is a great idea! and remember: this is ALSO very useful not just if 12v dies after 3-4yrs+...
but also if your HIGH voltage battery goes completely dead when you ran out of range, since... the 12v batt runs out of juice very soon after, since no HV batt to recharge it, then... by time tow truck gets you to supercharger, it's dead, and ... you still can't supercharge, he has to jump your 12v... this can help if they don't know how.
As you pinned comment, this method won't let thieves into frunk in normal situations. Still the best place to securely store valuables. It only helps when batt is dead and car locked, eg emergency.
re the jump starter, I don't think the Tesla needs very high current/amps capacity, since there is no heavy starter motor current inrush...
just needs enough to get the low-voltage system bootstrapped enough, to let the HV contactors close, so the HV batt can run the DC:DC converters (like alternator) and provide 12v power to system, ... letting you supercharge, not just open doors / use touchscreen.
Hopefully more tow truck operators get savvy w/ EV low-voltage batt jumping...
thanks bro
Seeing your surroundings I immediately thought.... thats Irvine! lol
This is really useful information! It just beats by WHY Tesla makes jump starting so user-unfriendly as compared to a gas engine where the battery is easily accessible.
I assume because it’s much easier and cheaper for them to design a system like this with virtual keycards than to integrate the creation and distribution of physical locks and keys into their production line.
Always thanks to you Chris. You are my Tesla guy. I think Tesla should pay you for making educational video like this one.
Thanks!
Thanks so much for the support! Appreciate you!
there is also a USB-C to 12 V adapter👍
Note the newer Li-Ion batteries (vs Lead Acid) operate around 15-16v. The manual says you should still be able to jump start them with 12v packs, but I haven't had to try it yet.
yah that's why the higher amps with the jump starter matters based on people who's new 12v died
I've always called that "zip tie" thing a "twisty".
Thanks for your videos. I have a question about cruise control. With all the current software updates, cruise control is no longer available like it was before. How do access this option?
Is this screen mode available on model 3?
I heard there was an always start 12 volt battery system for ICE cars so the 12v will never die have you tried to use that system in a Tesla ?
Using the same cigarette plug splitter than yours in another car :D The Tesla is freshly acquired though, so I don't wanna start installing sticky stuff everywhere (yet). Also, nice informative video. Sadly, I thought that the frunk was actually safer than the trunk, but now the bad guys (who previously broke the small windows to open the trunk), will start carrying this small battery with them as well, so they can also check the Frunk.
Does not work if the 12 volt battery is healthy..
You can't jump start a battery. You must charge it if chargeable. My prius 12V battery powered the computer which allowed me to start the car. I'm not sure about my model 3.
Those jumper cables don’t work for my Tesla model S but however a big jump box will work for my Tesla
Thank you so much for sharing this information! So neat. Can wait to get my model Y!
Hi Chris, can u use gas car to jumpstart Tesla 12v battery? Thanks in advance!
does it have to be an A23 battery? or does AA or AAA work too?
Just an fyi, if you are going to test the voltage on your 12 volt battery, you must do it when the battery is not being charged by a charger
My model S is four years old so recently I preempted any 12v failure - I hope by having a replacement fitted. Here in Australia we can be hundreds of miles from any of the few service centres and there are almost no mobile vans. Better safe than…….
My 12v on 2018 Model 3 lasted 4.5 years (65k miles) before getting a warning to replace it.
How much does Tesla charge for the 12v replacement? Sucks we can’t grab one at autozone :(
Weird question, but does your model 3 inspection checklist cover 2021 Teslas or just the newer ones? Getting it because PICTURES!!!
Mine died at the Baker superchargers on my way to Vegas. Tesla sent a tow truck and took us to the service center on Sahara.
Even with that battery there they can't start the car can they? I didn't think so.
You sont have to worry about a thief breaking into your frunk even if you leave the battery in there. The frunk release only works if the 12V battery is dead or the car doors are unlocked.
I heard that the front access port won’t work unless you have low12v battery. Thus theft can’t steal. Can you confirm?
Info item, I put in a soft close and the A23 doesn’t seem to pop it. I like the soft close though! (Also the car should tell you the 12v is dying. Mine did and they fixed it in the driveway no charge.
Does Tesla replace the 12V for free? Missed that in the video
How much is a new 12v battery
Now to remember to replace the little battery every 2-3 years so that it’s not dead when I need it. I can’t find a lithium-based 12v little battery like the a23, which would have a 10-year shelf life.
Someone said they just replace it every 3 years regardless. Mines coming up.
Isn't that kind of a waste and unnecessary pollution to replace components when there's no sign that they are bad? Especially a battery? Doesn't the car charge it like it is with ICEs? I was used to factory batteries lasting 6-8 years in normal cars. Looking into Teslas but confused tbh.
@@bencze465 My 12v on 2018 Model 3 lasted 4.5 years (65k miles) before getting a warning to replace it.
What about the newer Tesla's with the 16volts ?? The truck has 48v hehe
the 16v is 4 better. long live Spinal Tap.
Milwaukee M18 battery
Bump-frunk..bruh! Next to batter gonna store a mini twix or beef jerky, cuz ya never know.. hm. Maybe a mini fishin line an hook?!?!? Let's go
Oh he definitely got me on on that electrocution 😂
Me too. Good one !

you should've told people that you can only open the Frunk using a battery this method ONLY:
1.) if the car is already unlocked
2.) If the 12v battery is already dead
So should definitely be safe against criminals : )
I think frunk won't open if your phone is not conneted.
But how do you unlock the car door, when the 12v battery is dead?
I hope you are right.
Would this battery trick works on auto frunk?
Should be, it just unlocks. If you can manually raise the auto frunk then no problem.
Tesla frunk should be able to open manually from inside the car like ICE car can do for centuries. Tesla needs to fix this. I preemptively replaced my 12v battery after 3 years due to this issue. With my ICE car, I'd go 4-5 years before replacing my 12v battery and I feel very safe with portable jump starter in my trunk.
My 12v on 2018 Model 3 lasted 4.5 years (65k miles) before getting a warning to replace it.
with all that gear its just cheaper to take it to tesla to get replaced.
Wait but, by doing that that means people can just steal whatever I have in the front? 😅 By doing that no?
I'm homeless in my 24 year-old Toyota Sienna and now I know the secrets of the rich 😂
twist tie.
twistie tie
@@EverydayChris twist tie
A tie thing that you twist. Hmmmm twist tie? 😅
hahah
No need to attach it directly to the battery. That's what the two wires are for behind that plastic piece you poped out
Oh good to know!
A Tesla technician told me last week that the wires under the tow hook cover are only for opening the frunk. That they're not connected to the 12 volt battery. I don't know what's true, and maybe it depends on the year and model of Tesla.
Have never seen a video saying you can charge 12v with those 2 wires.
Yeah those wire behind the bumper is for opening the frunk only. To jump start the 12v there might be wires exposed to attach the clamps to @@Trust_but_Verify
So basically anyone who has a A23 battery can walk around (at the mall) and open any Tesla's front truck relatively easily and take whatever is in the front trunk. Knowing this I won't be storing anything valuable in my front storage area now 🤔
This only works with A23 battery? How about double A?
The A23 battery is a dry battery consisting of eight LR932 cells, with a nominal voltage of 12 V.
sheesh. Correct AA wont work
Isn't car still under warranty, let them replace at no charge
Secret is no longer a secret. :)
The future🙃
The 12v battery is the Achilles' heel for Tesla. Imagine being a week long road trip and it dies. Not sure why the entire system can't be powered by the large battery pack.
Question for anyone who can answermy wife does not like when she's driving. How the tesla shows all the cars in different lanes. ( I know one of the Biggest features of the car)
Is there a way To shut it off
what about the 16v has anyone had this die? the 12v is to be expected because it old technology that is in every car you will be lucky to get 3 years out of it.
I must be lucky as my 12v on 2018 Model 3 lasted 4.5 years (65k miles) before getting a warning to replace it.
Ah...a 12V battery dying within 3-4 years doesn't sound right. On my old Diesel it lasted more than 10 years...
Highly depends on where you live. In Phoenix the hot weather eats up batteries on nearly a yearly basis
Probably a great tip not to store expensive belongings in the frunk…
Basically just showed how to break into a frunk lol
Man if that’s your biggest fear you’re golden!
Does this work if I want to steal stuff from other Teslas frunk? 😂
Description says it will open only if the Tesla is unlocked. Will not work if it's locked.
Tbh, this seems like to much for a guy looking into buying a EV. The ICE ones seems more user friendly
Every 3 to 4 years!? 😂 just replaced a 13 years old lead acid battery from my Audi
Uh oh, now thieves are gonna start stealing people's frunks
wait the frunk can be opened with 12V battery?!?!? without the 12V battery dead?!?!?!???
WTF??!? gonna empty my frunk!
I guarantee you once the battery is dead there will be no camera recording and someone will jumpstart the front and get into your damn car
No one can open your frunk because that doesn't work if your 12V is working correctly.
And I thought that Elon musk supports self maintenance and repair model.
How is this design convenient or takes a very common issue of dead 12 v battery into account, if you cannot even open the hood or access the battery for jump start.
This seems like a giant engineering failure on Tesla
funny edit haha
You need a car which development is finished and it’s possible to charge the LV side with the HV side over the DCDC converter. But Tesla cars are shitty so you need extra equipment.
There is no such thing as a cheap (under $300) jump starter that produces 2,000 Amps. They are lying.
So anyone can just pop peoples frunks open if they pop out the plastic and use a battery ?
Tesla thought of this. The car has to be unlocked with the app and something with proximity , I thought the same thing. You might say unlock with the app the car is dead. Yes it is still dead but you can still go in the app and unlock the car. Obviously they won't open.
CHRIS - modern 12v lead acid are OUTDATED as are AGM and GEL batteries.
Consumers should switch , ASAP to newer 15.5v Lithium batteries, they are MORE Reliable.
12v batteries are just NOT up to TASK in this ERA.
