I am a candidate of CDL and successfully got Permit , went to college and paid the required fee. After 2 weeks of in class training they were impressed by my progress and put me in Yard for training behind the wheel and ask me to get DOT Physical done. I went to an authorized clinic for this purpose and filled out the FMCSA form and mentioned my pre-existing cardio vascular condition , I had one Stent placed in Circumflex coronary artery in 2012. The Doctor there asked me to get clearance from Cardiologist. Although I am perfectly fine, very good sugar and BP control, running 5 days a week, 5 miles each day. The Cardiologist I went to , couldn't pass me on a Stress Test, he was comparing my stress test result with a perfectly healthy individual with no cardiac problem ever. Although he was very satisfied with my heart rate achieved during the test , which was 97% of my max , and also duration I ran, with no Chest Pain and no hyperventilation. But sadly he start comparing me with a perfectly healthy individual. At the end of test he made remarks that you did good on Treadmill , but there is a little depression of ST segment close to the max inclination and speed of Machine. Although he did agree that this depression might be due to the previous Stent placed , but sorry I can not take a risk. He suggested me to take a Nuclear Stress test for further evaluation. I spent $ 350 for this test and Doctor asking me to spend another $1000-1800 for Nuclear Stress test. I already spent altogether more than $ 5000 for my CDL and still in limbo. Bottom line is that the Cardiologists need to examine a capability of a CVD patient in view of the job Description of a CDL driver and not to compare him with an athlete. I think FMCSA does not have a clear guideline for a people with cardiac issues that what kind of Statistics they want . For instance a Diabetic person must come with A1C of 8 or lower. In case of Cardiac pre existing condition, there is no specific data provided by FMCSA. No cardiologist wants to take a risk of certifying people like me. Please suggest, thanks
Any one knows a Cardiologist in Chicago or neighboring suburbs, the one who is familiar with FMCSA guidelines for a CDL, I went to couple of Cardiologists, they are not quite familiar with FMCSA guidelines.
I have an asymptotic condition resulting in low ejection fraction (43% I believe). I always take a copy of a recent letter from my cardiologist explaining my condition and that I’m healthy enough to drive. In my experience, the M.E. reads the letter thoroughly, asks me several questions, and sometimes has me do a couple extra things to make sure I won’t pass out. My last physical, the M.E. had me raise my left arm while he checked my heart-that was a first. Would you say being prepared with current documents from a cardiologist and being honest if you ever feel lightheaded or tired helps your decision to clear a driver?
Hi Doctor. I’m currently trying to pursue a CDL and according to the FMCSA, an individual with Long QT Interval Syndrome does not qualify for certification. Do you know if there are any exceptions to that? I have that condition due to a genetic mutation however, I am asymptomatic and am taking a beta blocker for the condition.
I had MI 10 years back, one stent placed in my coronary artery, since than I am okay doing fine, ok BP and controlled Sugar, active lifestyle, exercise etc. do I need to take a Stress test
Will varicose veins disqualify a candidate from being cleared? I have a cardiologist who has done a stress test and I was told I was fine, about how long is that valid to present? Also, what about a mitral valve prolapse? Thanks
All of this will be up to the doctor doing the physical. I would require letter from a cardiologist stating that it is safe for you to drive dated within one month of the exam.
I have a question. My current cardiologist says I don't need the defibrillator with my pacemaker. If he turns the defibrillator off making it only a pacemaker, can I pass the DOT physical?
Hi my dream coming out of high school was to become a truck driver but half way thru my senior I discovered that I had Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy two months later I had surgery for a pace maker so because of that I shied away from it. I’m now 22 years old and trying to figure out what I want to do with my life and truck driving keeps popping up in my head I’ve worked in a factory for 3 years now and delivered packages for Amazon do you think I would pass the physical exam?
I had a hart attack 8 years ago I'm on blood pressure med I had a stint and I not with her no more I can run with a bad back I'm good taking care of myself now can get my cdl???

We would require a clearance letter from your doctor. This may vary by examiner
2024 did anything change on having to. Have. a. Stress test done every 2yrs because of heart attack?
It is not required but many doctors will still ask for it

It may be possible but in my office I would at least require a letter from the cardiologist. The final decision is up to the medical examiner
