Red steenbras or Copper Steenbras as it is known in certain parts of South Africa used to be a species anglers often encountered from the shore in the 1950's to the 70's in this area. they caught massive Red steenbras up to 40kg and black mussel crackers up to 30kg in this area but the have disappeared and I have made it my goal to find one of these massive fish from shore. this trip is the first of many to come in the search off this elusive fish! it won't be an easy task but I want to explore and target some off the chart fish, bringing you guys something else, something that has not been filmed in the past!

There should be a petition to the government to ban keeping redlist species! Thats the only way we will be able to save them ! Keep up the good work we want more of these videos and educate the general public
Gives me hope to read comments like this one. It always surprises me how there is still recreational anglers out there that are slaughtering our endemic reef fish in a time that advocates catch and release with infinite publications on their decreasing numbers. And these are our heritage, they are beautiful and its our responsibility to look after them. The Poenskop, the kind of the reef. I don't want to see them disappear when I know we could have done something about it. So frustrating conundrum. Education works for some, but for others despite knowing the truth, they prefer to boost their ego. So if we can't discipline ourselves, we need fisheries to intervene with more regulation. But they are too slow to act as they don't use small data samples (measured in time) to make regulation changes, so by the time they have the data they need, it is most of the time too late. Apologies for the long comment! But it is such an important topic for me!
Nikita you are absolutely spot one! But tbis is where we need to take action in our own hands and start the education asap, hence i changed my slogan to Teach, preach catch and release! The more of us that start to teach others the faster we can save what is left and preserve these species for the future!

Lastly, would love to see you catch an adult Copper. That would restore my hope for them as a species. This is a very special and (relatively) untouched fishing spot, so if its hard to find them there, it must serve as proof to everyone how rare they are.

Absolutely one of the better videos Xander, apart from the video where you had a braai with the laity this is by far one of my favourites. There is some primal need for a man to be in the outdoors alone and adventuring, you should turn this adventure into a short mini docu series with this being episode 1. Absolutely brilliant looking forward to the next adventure.

What a wild place! Those swells busting up so near you made me nervous just watching. I have had some similar experiences on the Big Island of Hawaii. Nearly got swept! I see why going with two would have been better. Glad you made it back to produce this fantastic vid. And yes, do show the adventure part as well as the fish catching shots. Hey Xander with scenery like this I would have enjoyed an hour upload. That was absolutely AMAZING footage. And yes like you said the location should not go public, although I would love to know where it is. That is the place where I would want to spend at least a week if possible. Amazing place, amazing video thank you. Way too much gear, if it was me i would have rather chosen 1 alround rod and reel and it would be more enjoyable. After such an effort i would've just gotten home and fall into my bed till the next day.

Hi Zander, ek verstaan 'protected areas' maar ons locals sal graag wil weet waar vis jy. Dis nie asof ons in ons 100de daar gaan uitsak nie?
Sadly that's exactly what will happen. As soon as the people hear about a big fish being landed in a certain spot they all flock to that spot. The shad/elf run in struisbaai is one such example. Locals fish that spot all year round but when the shad come in, they can't even find a place to stand.
