Great to hear this. May Richard Manuel, Rick Danko and Levon Helm rest in peace. Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Cheers! ✌️❄️🎄🎁⛪🎸🥁🎹🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶
The guy playing lead does a pretty competent impression of Robbie's playing. The phrasing and tone is uncanny. This was around the time the Band was breaking.
@ Brian Miller. Iiiii Looooove Rick Danko. Hey Rick. I swallowed my chewing tobacco and almost fell off my horse. I'll have to speak to Maurice about this. Great post thank you.
That Gibson Ripper bass is one of the best things Gibson has ever done. Hope these cats really believe what they are singing and playing. This is a fine version. And yes, come and rejoice, while you still can ... TIME IS RUNNING OUT. Choose Life. Choose Jesus. NOW, while you still can ... but I already said that ... oh yeh ... WHILE YOU STILL CAN.
After the Band performed its farewell concert (The Last Waltz) at Winterland in November 1976, Danko was offered a contract with Arista Records by Clive Davis, making him the first Band member to record a solo album. Issued in 1977, his self-titled début featured each of his former bandmates in addition to Ronnie Wood, Eric Clapton, Doug Sahm, Blondie Chaplin, and Danko's brother, Terry. The album was primarily recorded at the Band's California studio, Shangri-La. The poor sales of the album destined it for rarity status. After he recorded an unreleased follow-up album, Danko was dropped from Arista. The follow-up album was finally released as a part of Cryin' Heart Blues in 2005.[citation needed]
Well, I really don't care for this version ... he sort of throws it away, singing too fast ... singing words not full phrases ... youtube has the original version too, from the album Islands, and that is fabulous. My favorite song around Christmas.
Considering Robbie wrote this and the version with Levon, Garth & Richard aka The Band was awesome but Rick slaughtered this one. Completely washed it out and made it sound like a karaoke shitfaced band playing.
No, I disagree. There’s room for all kinds of interpretations and he did something interesting here with a superb band. There was probably an element of trying to distance himself from Robbie.

A Beautiful song. It's perfect for Christmas. I love the singing and the lyrics and melody too. God Bless Rick.
This guy could have really had a whole second career man, love Rick

Joy! Merry Christmas up in Heaven, Rick! Here's wishing the son of a carpenter, a very happy birthday! 🎉🎅🏼🎄🎁
He is up there with the best
Rick is the best!

This version cooks. A lot like this wheels on fire…ain’t nothing wrong with that. Merry Christmas 🎄 Love Danko. Love The Band.
Absolutely
Great singing - Love Rick singing
Saw Rick Danko around this time at The Stone Pony in Asbury Park NJ. Good show. A good night. No one plays bass like Rick Danko.
I miss Rick Danko beautiful voice.
Great to see this wonderful song played live, even if it is taken at a bit of a gallop.
Love you Rick always and forever ❤
Still great after 40 years.
Brilliant! Danko is our hometown hero✌️#nofolklikenorfolk
I raced horses against his brother Junior back in the day
Wonderful
かっこいいです。
Where's Robbie? Where's The Band? Still, well done Rick. Rest in Peace, my friend.
Rick did his own gigs for a while there, often Richard would join him. Check out his album, its really good.

I never missed him after he left the Band (with all of the other guys’ royalty money)... nope not for a second
1977 they were broken up by then
The Band's "Last Waltz" concert was taped Nov. 25, 1976.
such a voice,
Terry's danko
If only to watch R Danko...sing this at least once.✌🏻👍🏻
@ Brian Miller. Iiiii Looooove Rick Danko. Hey Rick. I swallowed my chewing tobacco and almost fell off my horse. I'll have to speak to Maurice about this. Great post thank you.
In the craziness of pandemic, this song lifted me up. Sound so good. Thanks very much. 👍
This is amazing, thank you for sharing. I heard this tune on SiriusXM and was convinced there was no way there was a live version...sooooo good
Technically there isn't a live performance of this song by The Band. This is after the brake up in 1976. It's Rick and His Band performing this sing.
Damn it's been almost twenty years...
My fav Christmas song GOOOOOOOOOOOOO Rick
Happy birthday Rick.
Love Rick and love this version. New to me. Thanks for posting.
I'm hooked.
The best!!!
Absolutely love this!!!
2023 Merry Christmas world.

So different from the original but as good.

Merry Christmas!
I like the slow version better, but great clip nonetheless.
Even pot couldn't hype.him down.oh my God.
A taste of Americana-Meets-Great Lakes/Huronia-Tobacco-Belt Soul
Rick! Slow it down! Great song...but this is waaaaay too fast.
I Just noticed the dude playing double sax. Wtf! Who is he???
Any idea who is on the organ?

Marty Grebb .
Americana meets Christmas
gbnf rick

i believe he acruallt sings “lo, not “clothes”.
swaddling is clothes already.
Lo, the Prince of peace.
it’s the end of the beginning. ... ❤️👀
best song, but not best version... this just felt wrong, to my ear.
I think nothing tops the slower mode of The Band as a whole.
The band
You have to get the cheat to win you have to ridicule not coming down and then want to be their friend
Robbie wrote this song for his son Sebastien
So !
Too pop-y - Like the original, slowed down version
The original is better imo

This is more like the alternate version from Northern lights - Southern Cross. They're both are excellent variations. Rock on.
Like the LP version much better.

He Dylanized it lol
