Love it!!!! I was up in Woodstock at a midnight Ramble in early 2012. What an experience. Levon sang the weight. Quite hard bec ause of his throat. Still belted it out and covered the kit very well. Also, the encore was The Weight. One of the most magical intimate music events I have ever attended. Amy Helm was fantastic on vocals as well. Larry Campbell
Note the keyboard run from Garth at 2:20, right after Levon sings “that just made my heart throb, to the bottom of my feet”. Brilliant touch from Honey Boy. My Keyboard Idol.
Amazing version. The Band 4ever. Chills hearing Levon full voice. Saw him many times thru his vocal issues still always brought the roof down on the rambles. Magic Barn memories
Rodrigo Barros YASSSS!!!!! Levon was always in point!! with the beat and the lyrics!!! idk anyone else that can do that....well don Henley but fuck him...
Neil Peart is a GREAT,GREAT drummer.Same with Levon.I'll guarantee you that neither man could play what the other man played with the same feel.I'll use another example with guitar players.Who was the better guitar player, Duane Allman or Les Paul? Neither. Its just something that can't be won like sports.
ootoobings Theres no one that plays like rick levon and richard. Garth and robbie are also rare flowers but you only need to hear the rythm section in a buzzy bar to know that it is the band somewhere in the distance.
Levon was the only drummer I know of, that instead of drumming the beat and keeping time and rhythm, played his drums like an instrument other than drums. If that made sense. It is hard to explain. But like his intro to this song. It was more than percussion. That said, the Band were so good. They marked an iconic change in music. Not only that. They established and led it.
The Band was a Canadian-American roots rock group formed in Toronto, Ontario in 1968 by Rick Danko (bass guitar, vocals), Garth Hudson (keyboards), Richard Manuel (piano, vocals), Robbie Robertson (guitar), and Levon Helm (drums, vocals). Rock music's very, very best live show was "The Last Waltz" and yet we so very, very rarely ever hear this overwhelming FACT spoken or given the credit it deserves! Man do I miss Levon, Rick, and Richard. In my heart, Richard was an absolute tragedy. I miss them all, and I favored Levon and Rick of them all, but Richard's life is a real heart breaker. He was such a genuine, down to earth, great brother. Jack Canada born in Toronto 1962

This gotta be early 90's methinks ... same lineup as thir European Tour in '94 that my band opend for and I tour managed ... minus Richard Bell who came on board after Richard Manuel died. Garth called the tour "the Wheelchairs on Fire Tour" 🙂
Wasn't Stan Szelest the first to replace Richard...then when Stan died Richard Bell joined? Stan was connected with Ronnie Hawkins previously and was a helluva player.
@jeffwasserman8811 No worries...thanks for the reply. I have a (type?) of photographic memory for music facts and band lineups plus I've been a fan of the Band for over 50 years. I'd rather be a real player than a walking factoid repository, but...alas... So you got to open for them...HOW COOL IS THAT!! Is the 'harp' in your handle an indicator that you are a harmonica player? What was your band's name? Can you fill me in about some of your hi-lites and other bands you crossed paths with? I don't get bored talking music...so indulge me, if you will?
Garth Hudson is still alive. Rick superstar Danko died in his sleep. Robbie Robertson is living. Levon, sweet Levon, knocked on Heaven's door and got in with a wide, wide berth. xxxox
I think Garth was as funky as Levon, you just don't notice it as much since he's not on a percussion instrument (so to speak). That was one hell of a formula.
Saw these guy play at Lulu's roadhouse in Kitchener years ago. Best night and best band I ever saw. Never forget it. No Robbie Robertson but they were great!!
I adore THE BAND. The first time (actually the only time) I saw them was in 1965 at the Hollywood Bowl. I was just 16, stole my mom's '65 Chevy Impala and scared shitless, white-knuckled it up I-5 from Newport Beach to the Bowl to see Dylan after his Newport, RI Fest "Scandal"... He did all his great old acoustic stuff first half... then after the intermission some ROCK BAND came on. After a few minutes, impatiently, I turned to the male couple on my right and asked, "Excuse me - Do you know when DYLAN is coming back on?" They gestured, "Uh - that is Dylan!" "Oh..." I uttered, confused, surprised. That was Dylan going electric with THE BAND as his backup... what a great memory! And, btw, my mom NEVER figured it out! 😃
The Band, Little Feat, two of the best… by far. Thank you for the posting.
The Allmans and The Doors and the 2 you mentioned
Are the best American bands the Blavk Crowes also
Black Crowes
Rick never got justice his voice bass good times caught them twice and Rick Danko and freinds a few on the Hollywood circuit.❤
This is so rare and wonderful. So good to see Garth, Rick, and Levon. Unbelievably rare footage. Thank you.
how is is super rare? there is tons of footage of them from their various post-Watlz tours, especially in this era from the 90's
love that Robbie isn’t there. His singing is awful. too many lick he repeats.

Thinking about Levon today. Thanks for all the great music and memories ! RIP Levon, Rick, and Richard ! 🙏
And now we add Robbie to that list. 🙏
Only Garth is left now.
Thank you for sharing. This is magnificent. So nostalgic. Love The Band forever. ❤🎶
You had to see these guys in person to really appreciate their music and how great it really was!!
I can only imagine! Love them dearly.
I saw this lineup several times in the Hudson Valley...what a righteous noise! Best live rock band I ever heard.
I visited saugerties last summer I didn't even realize they did stuff up there it makes sense though I guess

Great shots of Levon’s odd stick work on high hat and snare......brilliant!!! A GREAT musician!
yes......his style is so unique, basic but with a flair.
This is beyond good. Thanks for posting it. Love The Band!! Garth Hudson getting down on this too…. don't leave Garth out!!!

Really love it!
The Band, the canadian-american Beatles,
Really,THE BAND BY FAR BEST EVER.
I love and miss Levon and the boys. Not sure how Garth is doing? Such a big part of my life listening to them growing up.
As of today, 11/26/24, he is in a nursing home near Woodstock. He lost his wife, Maud, a couple of Springs ago.

I've listened to various versions of this song literally thousands of times. Never gets old.
Thanks for posting this. Love the band they kick ass live.
I remember jamming out to this tune on my way to work back in '88. & , back then, it was old school! Such an amazing song!
Notice Levon's choice of bass drum placement 1 & 2, 3 & 4... He did a lot of stuff like that which really added to the unique feel he already had.
this is so great. such a talented group of guys

This is from Levon's instructional drum video from 1990. There's some really great stuff on that, even for non-drummers.
