  • The "Robbie-less" Band, live in Vancouver 1983. Four guys to replace Robbie (the Cate Brothers Band, featuring Levon's nephew Terry Cagle on drums). Richard makes me cry every time I hear him sing this verse. God, these guys were great!!! Missing Rick and Richard...

It is my opinion that The Weight is one of the best song ever written. It is a perfect balance of folk, rock, and country. Everyone like the song. it is like vanilla ice cream. it goes over so well with so many people.

Ok, Richard Manuel was the singer of several hits of the group but he only sings one verse in this song (the most famous of the group) and he hardly sings in the complete live of 1983 as well as in The last waltz of 1976 (Apotheosis of the band). Watching this short verse on repeat makes me sad every time. It's a wasted talent that has remained in the backgroung of the group and could have offered so much more before to die prematurely :'(

I've heard it said it's about an angel or death or person whatever visiting the people in his town to ease their hearts so they can die at peace. He arrives in the first verse and much like Mary and Joseph, is told there is nowhere for him to stay. Second verse he sees Carmen, and eases her pain by taking away her 'devil'. Third verse he tells Miss Moses just go on down, it's ok, Luke will be with you soon. Then he tells Luke I'll watch over Anna Lee and he is at peace. Crazy Chester in the fourth verse is worried about leaving his dog behind, but the man assures him he will feed him. In the last verse he's filled his bag with the souls and must get back to Miss Fanny because she's the one that sent him. The chorus is all about taking your loads off and putting them on the singer so you will be at peace. Seems like an interesting take even if it's not what was truly meant by Robbie.

    Lyrics
I pulled into Nazareth, was feelin' about half past dead
I just need some place where I can lay my head
"Hey, mister, can you tell me where a man might find a bed?"
He just grinned and shook my hand, "no" was all he said
    Take a load off Fanny
    Take a load for free
    Take a load off Fanny
And (and) (and) you put the load right on me
(You put the load right on me)
I picked up my bag, I went lookin' for a place to hide
When I saw Carmen and the Devil walkin' side by side
I said, "Hey, Carmen, come on let's go downtown"
She said, "I gotta go but my friend can stick around"
    Take a load off Fanny
    Take a load for free
    Take a load off Fanny
And (and) (and) you put the load right on me
(You put the load right on me)
Go down, Miss Moses, there's nothin' you can say
It's just ol' Luke and Luke's waitin' on the Judgment Day
"Well, Luke, my friend, what about young Anna Lee?"
He said, "Do me a favor, son, won'tcha stay and keep Anna Lee company?"
    Take a load off Fanny
    Take a load for free
    Take a load off Fanny
And (and) (and) you put the load right on me
(You put the load right on me)
Crazy Chester followed me and he caught me in the fog
He said, "I will fix your rack if you'll take Jack, my dog"
I said, "Wait a minute, Chester, you know I'm a peaceful man"
He said, "That's okay, boy, won't you feed him when you can"
Yeah, take a load off Fanny
    Take a load for free
    Take a load off Fanny
And (and) (and) you put the load right on me
(You put the load right on me)
Catch a cannon ball now to take me down the line
My bag is sinkin' low and I do believe it's time
To get back to Miss Fanny, you know she's the only one
Who sent me here with her regards for everyone
    Take a load off Fanny
    Take a load for free
    Take a load off Fanny
And (and) (and) you put the load right on me
(You put the load right on me)

Always wondered what Robbie was doing singing into a mic for background vocals...and I've realized, nothing at all. His mic was probably turned off all these years.

@Rick B Yes it was turned off, there is no additional voice heard to even account to Robbie even though it always looked like he was belting into a mic in most official live footage. I can recall hearing his tone deaf singing at Woodstock and I think in a couple of the songs on Festival Express if I'm not mistaken.

@Rick B It's not that I'm interested in taking anything away from Robertson's legacy, I have always been a fan of his since the beginning.(I used to sneak in with my friends to see him and the boys as supporting band to Ronnie Hawkins in my old college days at Ryerson University, every chance we could and continued to see them play live dozens more times as The Band after that). So I have the utmost respect and admiration for him and what he can/could as far as expression of his vast musical abilities but singing was just not in his wheelhouse. Unfortunately I think he felt insecure about that along with the fact that the bands image of the members trading leads as well as their moving harmonies that he felt like he should at least appear to be accompanying the singing. Whether he himself instructed his mic to be very, very low in the mix or if it was a direction from the rest of the band, it was so often the case that his mic's level was inaudible that he had to be aware.
p.s. I don't know if you are a singer yourself but if you are you will know how nearly impossible it can be to sing tight harmonies in a live concert setting with loud rock n' roll instruments blaring away, etc. If one of the singers can't hit his parts, one by one all of the other singers will either start to harmonize the right intervals to the wrong pitches or even follow the bad pitch and wrong notes of the bad singer or they will fluctuate their pitches in and out and between the wrong and right, to compensate which sounds horrible each time they go out and each singer will be suddenly making any one of these mistakes(or any other) in a way that will be at odds with each and any additional singer(s) who may be getting it right but it will still sound all wrong. In other words, The Band wouldn't have been able to perform like they did for all of those shows if they were dealing with something like that. If you want proof of Robbies lack of ability to sing, check out the Hall of Fame performance where The Band, sans Levon, sing the weight. Robbie takes Rick's verse and it is clear evidence that he is in fact tone deaf. Legendary player/composer but he's just not no natural singer.

As much as I love the original lineup, this lineup with the Cate Brothers sounded pretty darned good. Sure, Robbie wasn't there, but close your eyes and it doesn't matter.

This footage, I believe, is from the Band touring Western Csnada with some additional friends after Robbie left the group. I have this on VHS. It's absolutely smoking hot in my opinion. They are ultra tight and at the top of their game. I'd love to find this in a remastered hard copy. The performances by all involved are that deserving of special treatment.

Haha aw, Rick does the same thing at Woodstock - 'Chester' isn't the dog, Jack is!
