The Band, almost single-handedly, founded the Americana music genre. It's about old time American music, from all regions, but with a Southern focus. It's bluegrass, folk, old English and Scottish ballads, blues, old style rock and roll, gospel. Most of the boys were from Canada, but Arkansas boy Levon Helm brought in huge Southern influence. Their first mentor was rockabilly sensation, Ronnie Hawkins, who they were backing up as he toured the US and Canada in the late 50s and early 60s.

Saw The Band live in the stadium in Gainesville when they were backing Bob Dylan in 1976, when I was in college at UF. Joan Baez opened for them, and I remember she performed while barefoot onstage. One of my cousins drove down from Georgia with some friends to meet me for it; I think it was his first time interacting when me as a fellow adult. Good times!

It's called Americana, which blends elements of rock, country, folk, blues and even a bit of jazz. The drummer LeVon Helm won three grammy awards for his three solo American Albums-in fact he won the first grammy to be handed out in the category of Americana back in the mid 2000's. He won the three awards consecutively. His death from cancer in 2012 prevented him from completing a fourth solo album.

Might I recommend to ALL (and to all a good...) a documentary called "Festival Express." It featured (to name but a few) The Band, Janis Joplin, Delaney and Bonnie (sans Eric Clapton, he had yet to join) Buddy Guy, The Grateful Dead and more. It captured the brief tour of the above mentioned, as they took a train across Canada in 1969/70. Playing music on the train (free form jam sessions) along the way. It's a really good doc. Not sure where you ("kids") would watch it. Netflix. TH-cam. I'm old (76) I watch my VHS tape copy. I also read the newspaper...whattaya want from?...great song by Billy Squire, btw.

That's the sound of a particular branch of country music. It's the really cool part. The founder called it Cosmic American Music. These days they call it Americana. Even though The Band is mostly from Canada, they've definitely got it. Maybe because of Levon Helm or their manager Ronnie The Hawk Hawkins.
