If they had given him less screen time and treated him more like the antagonist to the Suicide Squad it probably be a better movie. It’s why I think Hell to Pay is a better movie. This is one of my favorite Batman animated films because I'm such a huge Bruce lee fan. I absolutely love this movie. The music , the cover art everything feels like an enter the dragon movie. Michael Jai White voices the Jim Kelly character. The bouncer clearly resembles Bob Wall. The fighter Sheva kills in her club resembles Chuck Norris. Theres even a scene where the Bruce lee character tricks the bouncer and locks him in the alleyway just like Bruce lee in enter the dragon tricked the fighter into hopping onto the boat and casting him off into the water. If your a Batman and Bruce lee fan you will enjoy this movie from beginning to end. Theres alot of small easter eggs in this film to enjoy.

    I wouldn't get too upset about it. Remember, Batman is by far and wide DC's most popular character and arguably the most popular comic book character of all time. If you slap his name on a movie title it's going to attract a wide array of viewers due to their attachment to his brand name. Nobody outside of dedicated comic book fans know who Richard Dragon or the Kobra Cult is so putting them as the headliner in the movie without any previous association with a big name character wouldn't really help them. Now that so many people have seen the movie and want to see more of Richard Dragon, Lady Shiva, Bronze Tiger and other characters....perhaps next time they can put out a movie concerning them without involving Batman. Batman is just a way to get them through the door.....

So they just made it a Batman movie with Richard Dragon, Bronze tiger and Lady Shiva. Which is such a waste as Richard Dragon is one of DC'S oldest characters, he Bronze tiger and lady shiva are the martial arts trinity. They deserve more attention and respect especially Richard because he has so much potential.

  • @LunaticReason
    @LunaticReason 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Even though Batman isn't the strongest and Richard got the shine at the end this is a Batman movie because it's about how Bruce develops as a character and where he learns his martial arts skills from. If he started out the best then there would be no point of telling the story. Batman is not supposed to be a Gary Sue character. This is an homage to the Dennis O'Neil characters including Batman. It's his story because of the moments where he and we the audience learn. Batman isn't the greatest fighter, he's great because of his intellect and determination. He makes up for his lacks of skills with his strategic mind.

    As a Lady Shiva stan, a film like this was long overdue for me. She has been treated so poorly in recent adaptations. Written as a tool for the League of Assasins (or Shadows) and only used to “prop up” other characters abilities and hype. My favorite Dc film of all time, bought the blue ray immediately. Just to point out, Shiva needs to be far away from the League as possible to be written well. I don’t understand why writers keep making her a lackey for them. F that. Denny intended for Shiva to be her on force, as good at healing as she is hurting. Read The Question by him. That is all.

    This movie was garbage. Why the hell are they calling the monk guy sensei when they clearly are not in Japan? Why doesn't Batman use any of his tools against the lizard people? Bronze Tiger actually comes up with a better tactic then bats. Why does Batman have a weapon shelf with lethal bladed weapons? And ya nice weapons Bruce, NO ONE USED ANY OF THEM!!! And great job Bruce letting literally everyone figure out your secret identity, including Lady Shiva who you established is a crime boss in this universe. She literally brushes it off as if she's not a criminal and he's not a crimefighter. And thank you Richard Dragon for legendary tactic of taking your shirt off when fighting the boss cause it makes you a better fighter.
    But this soundtrack slaps tho. I mean doesn't fit a Batman movie at all but for Bronze Tiger/Richard Dragon story it was tight.

    I think that warner bros could sell "genre" films starring their non-mainstream characters. They have enough to make lots of smaller projects if they wanted. You could have a spooky, occult film with Bloodwynd as the lead. You could do a campy romp with Johnny or Jakeem Thunder. You could even do a darker, sci-fi movie with Pantha. I feel as though their brand is strong enough. They sold a big budget Shazam movie, there's no reason why their other characters cannot succeed.

    I literally just finished watching this movie and I agree: it shouldn't have been a Batman movie at all. ::SPOILERS::
    The times when Bruce did put on his costume (twice during the entire runtime) felt shoe-horned in to justify having his property in the title. First time he actually runs away during a fight to put the cowl on and Richard sees right through it in five seconds flat, then Richard tells him 'they'll need every advantage they can get' for the final battle, encouraging him to don it again. And the only 'advantage' it gives Bruce during the big show down is Batarangs and smoke bombs. Which the others did not need and IMO implys he is an inferior combatant that needs his gimmicks to hold his own.
    Bruce is just there to supply the tech which aids the group on their mission e.g. the Batmobile for a chase sequence, a private jet to get them to the cult's island, a nifty armory wall of various weapons for the group to chose from etc. And if you're going to spend a big opening sequence of Richard Dragon using all this spy-tech like fingerprint copiers/printers and microfilm cameras, why not just have him be the one to produce those resources instead?
    Bruce being Batman had little to no effect and I only recall one time any of his fellow students even calls him' Batman' rather than 'Bruce'. (And even then it's in a backhanded way, with Shiva exclaiming: 'YOU'RE the Batman?!' in the middle of a big fight scene when Dragon blurts out about Bruce's little 'costume).
    This should have been a 'Kung-Fu Fighters' title on it's own. I found this version of Richard to be a rather bland, but having him be the head-liner would have been less painful than shoving Batman in there with no reason or purpose. And somehow that brooding, Bat-jerk STILL tried to take all the glory at the end anyway by trying to sacrifice himself going through the portal! Especially after Richard had done the majority of the fighting and killed the naga god on his own! Dammit, Bruce, can't you let someone else have the angst just once, man?
    I 100% agree with you also that DC shouldn't have been afraid to have one of their lesser known, minority characters head-line in light of Marvel's release of Shang-Chi. Why not, after all, when DC has been scrambling like an embarrassing little brother trying to copy their more successful, elder sibling Marvel for years? I'm going to get shyte for that comparison, but know that I have collected both publishers for over twenty years. No sane person can argue that DC has not rushed to ape Marvel's cinematic universe without putting in the decade or so of groundwork the latter did and has instead come out looking a little foolish for it. I'm sure the die-hard fans will try, oh, they will try, but it's sadly clear as day. ~achem~ First Suicide Squad movie ~achem~ Release the Synder Cut ~achem~
    Anyway, just my two cents on the film.

    I'll be honest, I don't think Richard Dragon could hold his own at this point and I don't think it's quite fair to compare it directly to Marvel's live action films. People will go to a Marvel film, regardless of what it is. Even with no knowledge of the character, you see 'Marvel' and know you're in for a big blockbuster action flick. Dc's animated films do not have that same notoriety with mainstream audiences. A film just called 'Soul of the Dragon' wouldn't be able to pull in that mainstream appeal in the same way as just pasting BATMAN on it would.
    Also, I haven't watched the film but I don't really like Lady Shiva's design from what I've seen here. Even flashed forward, she looks so short and dimunitive and young. I think it's the oversized head. I've always seen her as pretty tall and powerful in appearance so it feels a bit wrong her being more diminutive. It's not a big deal but it bugged me when I was watching your video.

On top of that, she was never over 6 foot or anything crazy. According to the DC wiki, she's 5'8" which, while tall for a Chinese woman isn't insane. It doesn’t feel like Batman, first off you see him kill like three people, and that’s not Batman, it’s the same problem as Batman in the dceu, and they tried too hard to include Batman, also him being the least skilled at the time of him being Batman shouldn’t be true, he’s gone through so much more training that honestly if it was a Batman film, he shouldn’t have been unconscious for the final fight

      Batman didn’t kill anyone in this film. You can arguably say he “killed” O Sensei but he was dead already, his body was just possessed and animated by the demon spirit thing. At that point, you could argue that he was more of a machine than a person. Hence it can be destroyed, but not killed.

    To me this could have easily been a prolonged series spanning multiple seasons at least 3 if they built up to the events of the film. I liked the 70s setting something different for DC animated films and nods to films like Bond and Enter the dragon, the fight chorography and voice acting was handled/executed extremely well, but coupled with the story that wasn't anything different and somewhat generic compared to past movies results in this one being unimportant however I did like what we received but wanted more I terms of characterisation and a more compelling story.
    I also totally agree that this shouldn't have been classed or marketed as a Batman movie he didn't really have an impact and if removed he wouldn't have changed the story in any significant way. This easily could have been sold as its own DC thing if it was a series it's characters would have gotten a whole lot more development which was needed all in all I like what we git but it had a lot more potential from the ending a sequel looks to be in the works but I don't see where else they can go from here...

    This movie could've been pretty interesting if we got a hero outside of Batman or hell without any hero at all. Movies like are a blast to watch and when animated they can get away with a lot of fight moves that are either extremely difficult to pull off in real life or even not possible at all. Batman being in this film is kinda the same reason they added the Birds of Prey into a Harley Quinn movie. With Harley Quinn it felt like they added the Birds of Prey cause cause they didn't think Harley couldn't hold a movie by herself while in Batman Enter The Dragon it felt like they added Batman cause they didn't think the cast could hold the audience's attention Which is extremely disappointing cause both movies could've been legendary if they didn't fear over small things.

    • @mindyg7064
      @mindyg7064 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have to sadly disagree that they thought Harley couldn't hold a movie by herself. I think it was the other way around: with DC believing no one would give a Birds of Prey movie a look without shoving Harley Quinn in there.
      As disastrous as the first Suicide Squad movie was, it spawned an army of casual female fans all over the internet labeling themselves 'Daddy's Lil Monster's and declaring they were 'the real-life Harley Quinn'. (Which IMO became a red flag to stay the hell away from these women jumping on the 'edgy' bandwagon to excuse their shitty personalities as simply 'misunderstood' and 'quirky', but that is neither here nor there.)
      After the bad reputation the Ashley Scott-starring Birds of Prey TV series in the early 2000's gained, I think the studio felt they needed to include their newest cash cow (Harley) into the mix to get their BoP cinematic incarnations noticed. And I believe they still messed it up royally with Cass. Then again, look at the poor Batwoman series.

    • @nightynight1479
      @nightynight1479 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mindyg7064 Honestly you're probably right. They had a lot of setting up to do in that film so by adding Harley they gave us a character that people recognized and can follow a bit more easily than Huntress or Black Canary. I still think the movie fumbled hard like the way they represented Cassandra Cain, Harley kinda just never really seeming like she is in any danger, and waaay too many elements of the movie kinda just feeling like Deadpool. Cassandra being portrayed the way she was really hurt the film for me cause she's such a cool Batman character that got wasted cause the director just wanted to use a name that fans would recognize. I still believe that instead of Birds of Prey they should've just tried doing a Gotham City Sirens movie, then again with how Birds of Prey turned out maybe it's a good thing they didn't bother.

    (I too am a Batman fan. But I have a major affinity for Bruceploitation (as in Bruce Lee esque focused films.))

    I agree Batman was really a missfit in this movie, if he was Bruce all way throught it would have made no diffrence. Now I do still like his scenes like the rice bowl one and hitting the rock. But I do also think Richard needed way more care, sure he was a nice guy who was ocasionally funny but that is it. Ben and Shiva had a lot of involment with the main plot then any other character.
    I love the music that was great, the animation very nice with the combat. Maybe only O-Sensei looked a little off sometimes. I like the suprise ending. The guy with the glasses was a fun villian. Now the diffrence between Marvel being able to make Shang Chi is mostly that now Marvel is a brand name like Disney. They need only to put the name there to make people atleast look at it. This DVD movies are still obscure, in europe you never get to see commercials for this, they could just as well not exist. The market is minuscule so they are doing thier best and they got a lot of freedom or else sadly I don´t think they could do as much however they wanted like with Marvel animated stuff, what is the latest one you saw that did not take a que from the Marvel movies? I understand that my point could be used to point out mostly DC fans watch this movies so they can do this without Batman in the name.
    But for now use Batman and Superman and even Justice League in name to promote this other characters. The people decide themself if they like to look them up and that will determine if this characters appel to the mainstream enough to give them thier own movies. It is a long term plan. They could never have done this without atleast one regonizable character on the cover. I will be happy when they can make a Green Lanthern or Arrow movie just focusing on them. I liked the first GL and I love to see them do GA too come on!
