DC animated movies are just for fans, so they hit the marks with a small, specific audience. They're also lower risk, less expensive and they basically get marketed directly to you, someone who understands the characters and has expectations for how they look, feel and behave. Those expectations are catered to in these projects.
Big live action movies are expensive, high-risk and have to appeal to as many different people as possible, most of whom have never read a comic book, or at least haven't in years. Big studios don't like taking chances on anything they don't see as immediately acceptable and easily palatable in this sense, especially because anything truly unique and interesting in the theaters rarely makes money. In this regard, we are all responsible, because we show what we're likely to pay to see everytime something "safe" or "reliable" comes out.
Superhero movies that are true to the characters we know and love don't sell to the larger target audience, so they give us dumbed-down action movies in plastic costumes that disappoint comics fans and barely sell the others. Even the typical plan of selling toys based on these movies is failing, if the shelves at Target and Walmart are any indicator.
Meanwhile, we bitch about them until it spills over into their sphere of influence, and eventually they'll stop paying to see these movies, too. This is a problem in making the niche mainstream. Once a fine thing, now boiled down into something anyone can get into, it becomes as susceptible to market forces as the things to which it was the "alternative".

Parasite’s origin story is THE most terrifying and depressing villain origin I’ve ever seen. Rudy was a man with a family who didn’t deserve what happened to him. He didn’t choose this. He was caught in the crossfire with Lobo and Superman’s fight and he also didn’t choose to kill all those people, the parasite inside him demanded to feed. And when that kid said *”Is daddy gonna be ok?”* I lost it.. And I lost it even more when his daughter saw him and started crying and screaming. Now they’ll grow up and all they’ll remember is that their father turned into a monster and died.
*Villain honestly isn’t the right word. He was a victim.*

Usually when he’s more sympathetic in the comics than just a random ass but I’ve always like his more monstrous designs and his absorbing powers always means theirs a potential for him to contest with superman. • @StareachValcin
    @StareachValcin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Parasite is the best antagonist for this film, but he really isn't a villain in this story. He is clearly a victim of circumstances. It makes sense for Parasite to be considered the main antagonist rather than the main villain. Lex Luthor is a villain in the film, but he isn't the main villain, and only starts his rivalry with Superman. Lobo can be considered the main villain of the film since he was the catalyst for all of the events of the film, especially Rudy becoming Parasite, but Superman takes Lobo out pretty early in the film with help from Martian Manhunter, and Lobo somewhat tries to help to stop Parasite (I use the word help loosely). Parasite proves to be the perfect antagonist for Superman in this film because he's an enemy Superman can't beat into submission because he can absorb Superman's power. Parasite is also a villain that goes well with the themes of Superman man of tomorrow. The people trust Superman because he looks human, yet fear Parasite because of his monstrous alien appearance, but Parasite is human and Superman is an alien. Superman reveals his alien heritage to humanity, reveals that Parasite is a human, reaches out to Parasite's humanity through the use of his own humanity, and Parasite responds by saving the city at the cost of his own life in spite of Superman trying to help as well. Superman tends to bring out the best in people, which makes Superman man of tomorrow one of the best films to represent who Superman is at his core.

I still think Lex Luthor is Superman's "best" villain on paper. He's a better foil. Superman was born with great power but has no means (poor). Lex was born with all the means, but no powers (and he thinks this was a terrible injustice). Lex thinks he's self made and Superman's existence is a threat to the natural order of things (aka capitalism). Superman, while being granted all the powers naturally, has earned his reputation as hero by doing the work and saving people. He's actually a self made hero, even though his powers are gifted. And he sees Lex's existence as a threat because *gestures broadly at Trump's America*.
But I'm super interested in this movie. Parasite seems like a way more interesting villain in this story than I've ever seen. Thanks for the recommendation.

  • @CaptainMarvel1939
    @CaptainMarvel1939 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The problem with this movie was the way they skipped ahead a few steps for this to be an origin story:
Why introduce Kryptonite? Lobo is powerful enough to give Clark "year one" a decent fight. How did Lobo even KNOW Kryptonite would have any effect, since he's shocked by Clark's strength? Why put it in a ring? Why even call it "Kryptonite"? Kryptonite really wasn't needed in the story since Superman found another way. In fact, it would have made for a better story for Clark to have developed a relationship before Rudy became the Parasite so Superman's talk would have had more meaning, especially since Rudy discovered that Clark was Superman.
Maybe I missed it, but when did they say Lex was SMART? As far as I could tell, he's a scrupulous rich businessman who uses his money and power to carry out schemes. Why would Clark even seek him out? Lex's a criminal and Superman getting launched into space was silly. Clark knew his powers weren't gone, so why wouldn't he make the same assumption Lex did that they would eventually return? Lex assumes Superman has a "secret identity", but why would he? Lex also assumes the sun is the source of Superman's power, but why would he? Why not assume Superman has a secret space station or spaceship out there that he's trying to reach?
Parasite was a tragic character. He wasn't a "villain". However, what would make Lex think that Rudy NEEDS to siphon energy just because he can? They never explained any type of "need" for Rudy to absorb energy, so the whole setup of putting all that energy into the power plant to attract Rudy didn't work for me.
Why did Rudy transform into Godzilla? That didn't make ANY sense. Why kill Rudy? Lobo came back. Jonn came back. Superman "came" back. Rudy is capable of absorbing the POWER OF SUPERMAN, but the energy of a power plant kills him???
Parasite can be a decent villain, but he would need to be written as a tragic one due to his abilities. In the comics, Parasite needs to feed in order to survive, much like Morbius over at Marvel. Parasite needs to be written that way, struggling with the morality of killing others just so he can live. Parasite's NOT a dirtbag, which is why he keeps Superman's secret identity. Yet he knows that Superman is a veritable feast
Unless they are going to give Rudy the ability to control how much he feeds, stories could investigate how he feeds, while staying off Superman's radar. Basically, Parasite has the same problem as Rogue over at Marvel, so stories need to explore just how much he siphons and just how long he retains, as well as what happens to his victims. Rudy could be the ultimate crook, spy or information trader.
The main problem with Superman's villains is the level of power needed to truly challenge him. In his battles, there are few villains out there who can actually hurt or kill Superman. That's why in order to challenge Superman, you need villains that challenge his morals/ principles/ beliefs rather than his powers. That's why Superman has one of the weakest Rogue's galleries. Right now, Superman has epic battles with Brainiac, Mongul, and Darkseid balanced against ridiculous ones with Mxyzptlk, prankster, toyman, Lex, livewire, parasite, metallo. Throw in the occasional "mirror match" with Zod, Bizarro, Eradicator, Ultraman, Cyborg Superman

The guy with photographic memory and replicated the super serum in All Star Superman. The man who after swapping bodies with the Flash was able to display feats and abilities with ease utilizing his newfound powers. The guy who ran a whole fake presidential campaign just to egg Superman to reaching a level of public distrust and skepticism after learning about the Justice Lord and even in other instances where he did manage to frame Superman and have everyone chasing his ass in Public Enemies...and you couldnt infer that he was one of the smartest characters?

@7:04 I’m sorry, but I hate that scene and I always will. Not just because of how heavy handed but simultaneously shallow the writing of it is over all. Not just because it makes Superman out to be even more of a Mary Sue than he already is. Not just because it stereotypically portrays a teenager who’s into the goth scene as being suicidal. But the way it makes light of the experience of a person succumbing to suicidal ideation with Superman saying a few words and the episode is over has to be the epitome of virtue signaling.
And I don’t even like or usually use the term “virtue signal”, but my word, this scene is it. Let’s just forget about the fact that you aren’t going to talk down someone who’s committed to ending their life with 5 seconds of platitudes. There’s simply no care or thought to this scene. It’s just a throwaway scene to make Superman look good with no effort put into earning that praise.
Even series and movies that put some effort into tackling the subject of suicide have trouble getting it right, and yet this throwaway scene is supposed to impress me? You put it out there to make the case for Superman as a beacon of morality, but it’s scenes like this that make people not like Superman because it comes across as phony. It panders to people who don’t really care about people experiencing suicidal thoughts, but like the idea of being seen as the hero who can talk them out of it. Sorry for the rant, but it always bothered me that so many Superman fans like fawn over these five panels.
Edit: Additionally, I hated the 2009 Wonder Woman animated movie. It just seemed like a feminist Trojan horse. That is, in advertising it presented itself as being this kick ass feminist superhero movie, but if you listen to the message we’re meant to take away from it in some of the big scenes about halfway in and towards the end, the movie comes across as pretty anti-feminist and very pro-benevolent sexism.

    Spoilers:
While I understand the way we can find Rudy sympathy for what he's going through, I feel like at one point it just kinda loses that angle for me. I understand right after getting his powers he can't control them and starts killing people on accident cause that's just what his body does now. But what I can't look past was when HE BURNED J'ONN ALIVE IN FRONT OF CLARK AND THEN LEFT LIKE IT WAS NOTHING! I know J'onn tricked him using his mind but still, Rudy didn't even hesitate or seem reluctant to kill him. Also, I don't think we ca rack that up to instinct because he was speaking, like in complete sentences throughout that entire fight. So yeah, I wasn't totally convinced to be on his side when we saw him visit his family while using the powers of the person he had just incinerated a couple minutes earlier. Sidenote: I'm not trying to start anything, but am I the only one who though Lois was kind of a dick in this movie? Or at least disturbingly emotionally manipulative.

It is and always will be Lex Luthor being the best villain for Superman. The reason is not because of his backstory or just his villainy, but because of what he represents. Yes Superman is a 100% great and fantastic COMIC book hero, but for a moment, actually put yourself in that world. For a moment, think what it would be like living on that earth with the heros and villains existing. It’s absolutely fantastic. You feel safe, but as humans you will always have that gnawing sense of ‘what would happen if superman went rogue. No man is infallible, so what would happen if he failed. What if there was a force not even superman could stop?’
Lex Luthor is the sum parts of these gnawing emotions and beliefs. What makes Lex the greatest villain to superman is because he has a point. He has a reason even I could agree with and he would gain massive support if he would drop his arrogance. Sadly, the newer written forms of Lex have been missing the mark sadly and made him more ‘i’m evil’ rather then ‘if humanity is to survive, it is to surpass superman’.

Okay for what i'm going to say spoiler warning ahead but something i think we should talk about is that they tried to kill parasite and none of it worked it just made him stronger and in the end he sacrificed his own life to save the lives of everyone in the city which in the end shows he fought against his instinct to consume energy and ended up burning himself out to save them so he died himself instead of the monster he could have become.

superman's best villain is grey hulk--I MEAN (insert the name of the weird Grey Hulk that killed him in the OG death of superman comic)**
**I care so little about Superman villains I'm afraid I cannot be arsed to look him up...Superman has always shined brightest for me in his collaborative relationships as a friend (eg to Batman) or mentor (eg to Shazam)! I'm excited to check out this movie for its new and shiny animation style, as well as to maybe actually care?! about a Superman villain?!

While it's fun to watch Doomsday(the guy your talking about) and superman going at it. He has never been much more than a plot device. Good for pushing the overall story but never meant to be the true focus. Nothing inherently wrong with that.
Though superman actually has a lot of villains that rarely gets any screen time my personal favorite is Manchester black because he directly challenges his morals and methods.

Love the move, but can't stand the fact that there are alot of haters outvoicing how good the movie was. They're trying to compare it to Batman v Superman level of bad! It's not even in the same bracket!!!

Yup because the villian defeated by starting to recall his time in the military just makes them great XD

My only issue with the movie was the animation. Art style was fine but the animation seemed...stiff at the best of times and I feel a few more “panels” would have massively helped

How smart is superman? Is he only book-smart or is there a story that exploits some kind of detective/street kinda intelligence?

please update your patreon to start at $2, you definitely deserve it, and I want to see you grow. An extra $1 wouldn't hurt in my opinion, but is still less than a solid $5 ToT

I didn't care for the movie. I found it boring and the animation was to choppy, not smooth. I appreciate the comic book look though. And the lack of background music was killing me! And people America Godzilla Parasite. Oh well.
