We’ve become big fans of Anschutz, a premier rifle manufacturer known for its incredibly accurate rimfire models. We’ve covered the Anschutz 22LR 1710 Competition, but I wanted something from the benchrest world I could test tuners, silencers and rimfire ammunition with. The Anschutz 54.18 match BR50-U7 is the answer.

Hey UlitimateReloader Team, thank you for the video and nice review! We are glad that you are happy with the rifle!
We have only one small remark: 09:07 We only shoot with lead ammunition. The particles in the barrel are apparently hardened oil. This can easily be removed with a brass brush. Please observe the operating instructions when cleaning the barrel!
    Greetings from Germany! :)

Yeah, I run a 1413, but one day will be looking at a 54.30 for Competition in the UK.
As regards Benchrest for rimfire, that particular tripod support padding, and the rear bag are both not allowed in UK Competition, we'd regard these as cheating. The tripod has to have a completely flat surface that does not grip the sides of the 3" wide benchrest block (the 54.18 appears to have this as standard), to the extent that there also needs to be at least an inch clearance either side of the block, and the rifle butt has to be entirely supported in the shoulder.
Only in centrefire benchrest is a flat front bag on the tripod, the bag at least 1/2" thick with 1/4" finger depression, again maximum width of a front bench block should be no more than 3", with similar clearance either side of the block on the tripod, only in this form of competition is a rear bag allowed.
I'd have used a fixed rifle clamp to assess what ammunition the barrel likes at 10 yards, and then fit a barrel tuner to adjust the group for harmonics for 50 metres+, at 25 yards a barrel tuner is not necessary.

I’ve owned a couple of Anschutz rifles and they were great however I now use a custom Brno 2 1958 action with a custom heavy stainless barrel and BR rifle stock. Weaver T36 scope and worked trigger. I only use SK pistol match special. This rifle and ammo is a grade bench rest performer every week

Glad to see you doing some rimfire accuracy testing, as a rimfire Benchrest guy I really get off on tiny groups out of these little 22s. I have found testing a lot of different rifles that a torque test on the action screws really can affect the accuracy of the rifle. Find a sweet spot that your rifle really likes . Once you find the torque setting that your rifle is really happy with, then I go into ammo testing. I found that it takes about 500 rounds in most barrels to kind of settle down. Can't wait to see what type of content that you come up with this.

The Anschutz 54 will shoot .2 all day long, it’s the nut on the back of the stock that usually takes the shot outside of .2 I took 2 targets out to shoot the .22 day at the range group challenge with my 54 Anschutz and achieved 2nd place with 5 shot .104 group, your input is so important, it has a huge effect.

I absolutely love my anschutz rifles. I currently have a 64 single shot. In years past I’ve owned a different 64 and a 54. You’ll never find another “mass” produced rimfire that shoots better.
I shoot indoors at 50’ off hand in competitions. For the money, the old Wolf target that was pre Eley, was darn good shooting ammo. My gun loves it. With Eley now loading wolf I need to soon find another ammo. My rifle hates everything Eley.

In the 80's I shot an Anschutz 1813 3 position rifle, and the thing was an absolute beast for accuracy. I foolishly sold it some years ago and now can't afford to replace it! Long story short I bought a Savage MKII with a black Tacticool stock. I reworked the trigger down to about 1.25 pounds. I shot RWS Rifle Match, all kinds of Eiey, and everything else I have laying around, and nothing would group, I mean 3/4 inch at best. I then brought out the CCI Standard Velocity 40 grain, not sorted, right out of the box, and it grouped under 3/8 consistently at 50 yards. This past weekend I brought it out again and my first 3 shot group was .162 inches. Subsequent 5 shot groups were all right at .200 or so inches for 4 shots, with one straying from the group by about .250, with every 5 shot group. Moral of the story, I'm GLAD it hated the expensive stuff, and I will sort my CCI by rim thickness and weight and hopefully eliminate that consistent flyer. Don't be afraid of trying the cheap stuff, it might just surprise you!!!

What a beautiful bench rest rifle you have, if you have half as much pleasure as I get with my Anschutz 54 match rifle you will be a very happy man. I have recently changed from Eley Team ammo to SK rifle match ammo. The last card that I shot in my NRSA rifle club in Cornwall UK at 25 yards scored the maximum 100 points but only 2 x's. No barrel attachments and shooting from a fixed bench, supporting the rifle in the front with an SR 300 Light rest, and a gloved left hand supporting the rear of the stock. I use an Element Titan FFP 5-25 X 56 scope which gives me the clarity needed for this type of precision. It is great fun and we have a competition next Sunday in a Devon rifle club which I am really looking forward to. Thanks for the great video and have a lot of good safe shooting in the future . A good friend of mine is the importer of Anschutz and RWS ammo - GSI. BTW that rifle has a chamber designed for the Eley EPS bullet. I don't shoot bench rest matches often. I do shoot our .22 Sniper Match every month. Steel targets at 50, 75, 100, 125, 150 and 200 yds. 10 targets at each distance. We will start hosting a NRL 22 match in January. I shoot either a Bergara B14-R, 10/22 or Savage TR. All three are 1/2 moa rifles. I recently installed a Harrell's tuner on the Bergara and Savage. Waiting for a windless day at our range to find the best setting. OTOH I may just to to GSI and use their 100 yd indoor range. Just bought a Ruger Precision Rimfire for the NRL match. Have not shot it yet. Got a heck of a deal at Academy as they offer a 10% Veteran discount during November.

The only perfect score I ever shot and it stayed in the high 140. This was with Wolf match extra ammo.! If I sound like I am bragging, well who wouldn't? LOL!

Very interesting video. I have an old BSA Martini MkV with original documentation including the test target from the factory. It shows a sub 0.7" group at 100 yards using TENEX ammunition. It would be interesting to see if your set up can match that. 🤔🤔 You have inspired me to dust it off and try my hand at bench rest. My other rifle is an Anschutz 54.30 which I use for prone shooting competition. A lovely rifle which out performs me. 🙂🙂

I used to have an Anschutz 54 Sporter and 1411 but foolishly sold both over the years. 😞
My current favorite rifle is a Vudoo 360 repeater with a TriggerTech Diamond 4oz single stage trigger, a 26" Bartlein benchrest barrel, an ATS tuner, an M-Brace mount, a Hellfire Match brake, and ZCO 8-40x56 scope.
So far, she shoots great with SK Biathlon and SK standard.
Haven't tried my Lapua CenterX and Eley Tenex yet but plan to soon.

You absolutely must try SK Flatnose Match. It far surpasses any of the match grade ammo I have tested, including Eley Tenex. I have done extensive accuracy ammo testing with my CZ 457. Although not stocked in benchrest configuration, and despite its slender barrel, it can indeed perform outside its class. You may see how that ammo and rifle performed in a TH-cam video I did in April of last year. Ten shots into .345" at 60 yards with a 4x Leupold on a very windy day. One shot was outside the group at 3 o'clock, which spoiled a .275" possible. My Bavarian droop comb on the Lux doesn't permit the necessary solid cheek weld, so it certainly could shoot even better. I used 60 yards simply because my 4x rimfire scope is factory set for 60 yard parallax.

    • @jimenright318
      @jimenright318 ปีที่แล้ว

Nice. I have a CZ 452 trainer with the same Bavarian comb. I use a Beartooth comb raiser kit. It solves the problem without ruining the stock by drilling holes. They cost about 30 bucks, can be easily installed and removed and work great.

When you switch ammunition with rimfire you will not see proper results if you do not clean the barrel. Lube cross-contamination is a thing. It doesn’t seem like a thing that would matter, but it matters quite a bit. If you’re shooting a couple of 5-shot groups and switching you actually don’t know how well any of the ammunition you shot will actually perform in that gun. Any ammunition tends to shoot worse when shot over another brand’s lube without cleaning. And after cleaning it can take as many as one shot per inch of barrel before it is performing its best, which tends to ensure the entire barrel is lubed up. I have no idea how that RWS will perform in that gun, but the group you showed on camera looks pretty much what you’d expect for lube cross-contamination. Testing a rifle with a bunch of different ammunition to find what it likes is beyond a pain in the ass because of all the cleaning that’s required. If you’re testing ten different lots of Midas+ you don’t need to worry about cleaning because it is all the same lube, but if you’re testing some Midas+, some Eley, some RWS, etc., it starts eating time because you need to clean in between each type and then season it in with the next stuff before you start shooting groups. If you don’t, you’re wasting your time and learning nothing.

nice rifle, and video, ps the reason for the forend two-piece, is that they have a match grade rifle, like in olympics where they have a hand rail, which is adjustable, for standing competition, and this removable block, would allow this 54 action to be used (retrofitted in competion space, as competitors can 're-rig' a rifle for position changes, scope setting, etc.) in multiple competitions, ONE rifle, for ALL, not having to outlay $5,000 or so for a rifle specifically rigged for each competitions requirements, just a "kit", stock, scope/sights, weights, Hand rests, etc. all "user" replacable, with one tool provided (look up their site, shows how adjustable their rifle "system" is , ESP. the 'ONE-STOCK' they released 2015? if memory serves).

I shot 8 different loads (Federal 36gr, Norma tac 40gr, Aguila target comp 40gr, SK standard plus 40gr, SK Biathlon 40gr, Eley team 40gr, Eley club 40 gr, Eley target 40gr) at 50 yards and did 10 shot groups. All were around 1/2” 0.4,0.5,0.6” but the SK Biathlon were 0.225” and 0.245” for 2 separate 10 shot group at 50 yards. I’m very happy with her performance tho I’ll be trying other ammo and seeing if a trigger job/replacement might help as well. I inherited a Savage-Anchutz Model 184 Sporter, from my dad. It says Made In West Germany, on its barrel. Its bolt (literally) fell apart one day; I had a Master Gunsmith remedy that situation for me, and it's back to whacking red squirrels, on occasions they're foolish enough to let me put the crosshairs on them. It had a 4x Weaver Marksman (antique! lol) on it, but I put a sweet Leupold 4x28 rimfire scope on it, held in place using Talley rings. Sighted dead on @ 50 FEET, not yards; I use subsonic ammo in it, and I've hit every red I've shot at, free hand, (4 so far) since I got it back. Some years ago, with the Weaver optic still on it, I shot a Ruffed Grouse that was standing in the road, out in front of my property, 60 yds. away, using my porch railing as a rest. I aimed at its chest, dead on. "Splat!" It's wings went out flat, as it fell on its beak, stone dead, using a Remington subsonic hollow point. I'd always enjoyed shooting that rifle, but taking that bird made me fall in love with it!

On the borescope it looks like there are machining marks on top of the rifling lands. I have a 1416 that has the same lines/marks but much worse. Very visible in the grooves also. Is this normal for Anschutz barrels. Are they button rifled?

I’m shooting a 1710 Competition. I bought it with lot tested RWS R50. It shoots under .2” at 100 yards. I’m guessing that because of lot testing, it hates muzzle devices. I shoot at 5,500’ off of a folding plastic table on BLM land. I would really like to try a nice bench like you have some day. When they have ammo you can buy a 5 lot brick, then buy the best lot or try again. I was able to get RWS HP that is nearly as good as R50 at about half the cost. All of that is a bonus for buying from them. I don’t think I’ll ever shoot a wood stock again. BTW, I don’t know what’s going on with that barrel, it looked terrible. Did it need cleaning or were there chatter marks on the lands?

Benchresr & magazine fed are not commonly combined. Still a nice rifle. I would recommend comparing magazine fed groups vs. single fed groups.
You alluded to copper streaks from factory testing. How?? I’m sure Anschutz isn’t testing with Velocitors. ☠️☠️☠️

As a FSBR competitor , single round loading will decrease group size with premium (Midas +, Exact X - lot tested by Lapua) ammunition even more by virtue of less bullet deformation than when bolt feeding from a magazine. Stiller 2500X action, Shilen 'Ratchet' 1" straight SS barrel finished @ 24" with an EC Tuner in a Masterclass F Class walnut stock, Jewel BR trigger @ 2 oz, Stiller 30 MOA rail , NF Competition 42X45mm scope in NF rings , SEB Mini-X rest . Consistently will shoot .1- .2 " groups if I do my part at 50yds.

Terrible time of day for zero and testing in terms of the Sun at that range, I have to wait for a cloudy day to shoot after 11am at my home range due to artifact in the lenses, even with a sunshade on the scope. Plus where I normally shoot competition there's a time slot at around 1 to 2 pm currently where the Sun comes through a gap in the trees and I have to suspend shooting until the Sun moves on.
There's also the issue with optics of bright goes high, and dark goes low.
You're lucky you didn't damage your eyesight using a scope aimed near the Sun, the damage is instant and permanent.

To allow plenty of receiver area for mounting match sights. Also puts the bolt handle where your fingers can reach it without breaking position/ changing your NPA.
These rifles are used for bench rest, but they were designed for position shooting.

the ammo testing was cringe though... when using lubed ammo such as the ammo types tested you should be shooting minimum 5 x 5 shot groups to work the old wax out and new wax in aswell as different types of powder fouling... personally ill shoot two boxes(100rds) of groups out of a single ammo consecutively, lightly clean the barrel then move on to the next ammo type
