That’s a valid point! I love how smooth and easy the gen three is personally. My dog can’t open it. BUT I will say: NO Microtech OTF I’ve got, and I’ve ALOT, fires like my original 20 year old, beat up sacarab executive edition. The blade spits out angrily and aggressively with a distinctive “shrink pop” sound. So crisp. I also learned that thumb trick way back-better leverage! Thank you.
I could not find anyone who would actually look inside to scarab gen 3. I think people are afraid or something. But i believe in you to show is what is under the curtains. Actually my first video i’ve seen from you was scarab 2 look inside. Can’t wait to show us again how it’s done dude! I appreciate you.
I’ve bought the new Gen 3 Combat Troodon and the Gen 3 Scarab 2 and I love both of them! I love the slim feeling size of the Combat Troodon but I also love the massive, robust feeling of the Scarab 2! They’re both awesome knives! They both operate so smoothly! I love big blade knives! I also recently bought a Dirac Delta just for another big otf that is cc different with the face firing button! Thank you for the informative video, keep up the good work!
I have a 2019 CT, and a brand new CT. The new one is noticeable easier to actuate. BUT! The 2019 fires substantially harder. A function of the increased load on the shorter and stouter internal spring.
Awe man. I love my gen 3 but no groove on the top really bothers me. The slight thinness I can’t perceive. But yea, I want the groove back- that’s signiture scarab!
I wonder if this means the scarab 2 gen 2 is going to be discontinued now, have you heard any news? Love the look of the gen 3 but my gen 2 is still my fave, not sure how I feel about the narrower blade since the whole reason why I wanted the scarab was for the wider blade
@quin498 They are actively making the DLC Shadow versions, both in D/E and S/E of the older gen 2 version! There have been restocks for about a month now of the Shadows!
@@edged_mindset especially with the CT you’re right. I know the dual springs Is definitely nicer, easier actuation with a more powerful feel, but I’ve heard different things online about it where dual springs means there’s a double chance for spring failure, which I can’t argue with. Especially compared to the singular large spring in the gen 2. Very happy I own a gen 2 just in case the gen 3 ages poorly but we will have to see. I gotta thank you tho Edged Mindset for covering niche things like this because it is important to me and other people, much love
I just searched the world over for the original cause that skinny blades bugs the hell out of me too lol i paid more for a used gen 2 than a new 2 gen 3 damn 😅
You got me struggling homie. What I need is a good fixed bush knife because I'm relying on a Morkaniv. But I got looking at Microtech last night and that stupid little exocet has me making justifications. 😅 I noticed though theyve sold out a few places. Im thinking I should hold off because it might be next on the upgrades list. Because it seems like its the only one left to see a face lift.
Between my wife and I we’ve had a bunch of Microtech’s and have had zero issues with any of them but I just bought the Gen 3 Scarab II and have had it less than a week and have had at least 10 failures when trying to deploy it. Have you heard anyone having issues with theirs and if so is there a possible fix? I messaged Microtech to see what they say and am waiting to hear back.
@edged_mindset Thanks! Very curious as I'm honestly not a huge fan of how easy the new ones are to deploy, its impressive but feels a bit weird. Hoping that one is a little more difficult as I'm thinking of getting rid of the Hera 2 and picking up the Scarab.
I like the old one more 🤷🏻♂️ I really dislike when otf’s have blades that look skinny. They’d why I don’t like my te combat troodon. The blade looks to thin. De are fine. The scarab 2 g2 looks PERFECT imo. Blade to handle ratio I mean
I have the gen 2 scarab 2 I just rotate it slightly and use the side of my thumb to retract the blade…..I am sticking with my gen 2 but I will be getting a gen 3 CT double edge to go with my T/E
fully agree with you, if you can make the mechanism better, why not. I guess they say the old mechanism is better is because they want their old Microtechs easier to sell.😅
Just not the same knife with that blade, it really bugs me, but to each their own. They probably had to shrink the blade width to fit the new springs. It just seems less of a Scarab IMO which is a risky move, but again, to each their own. Pros vs Cons for the weaker hands.
I don’t see it being worth the upgrade if you own the gen 2. I prefer the wider blade. Also I see them continuing to do what they have always done, flood the market with combat troodons and ultratechs. I think it’s so people don’t realize that the scarab is overall better platform.
Great review as always. Lost a lot of respect for Microtech based on multiple quality control failures I’ve experienced over the years. Lost even more respect after hearing their foolish, hard-on marketing lingo. “Duel fuel drivetrain”. It’s a duel spring mechanism for goodness sake! Drivetrain lol. I’ll stick to my gen 2 Scarabs/Combats and ofc the Dirac Delta. I don’t trust current Microtech tactics enough to take a chance with their gen3 pieces. Especially after all that blade bounce back on Hera2s.
I play guitar daily, and I work construction for a living. I visit the gym, at least twice a week. I’m not the largest man, but by far not the smallest. I mentioned in a previous comment that I gave away a combat Troodon. I didn’t mention why. It was because the mechanism was so hard to deploy that I felt to be a useless tool. in fact, I feel horrible that my friend I gave the knife to cut his tendon, and no longer has use of his left index finger. He was trying to retract the blade. he was using both fans both thumbs on the button and so much force was applied to retract the blade that when it did both his index fingers were shoved up and the blade caught his left one. This is toll not safe. I believe this one got by quality control. This Knife should’ve never left microtech. I’ve have handle plenty of other out the front knives including microtech. The combat Troon I gave away had a defect because other combat protons. I have handled the ploy and retract much better. I guess my point is I’m glad they are finally addressing a flood system, if no one can’t handle their knives, it reduces their customer base. I like microtech and I hope I can buy a quality knife that has actually gone through quality control and passes and is actually safe for the consumer in the future. as far as people saying that they want the knife to be harder to deploy than I can’t really agree with that. I seen a comment where someone said they have it hard to deploy because their child may get a hold of it. For one thing, you should never leave your knife out where your child can get a hold of it. I keep all my firearms and a safe and have trigger locks so my children cannot get a hold of any of my firearms. I also have my knife collection in a safe and only wear one per day. Anyone who leaves a knife out where a child can get a hold of it is negligent. Then again, I have plenty of kitchen knives in my drawer that any child has access to. The thing is that you have to teach your children that they are not toys and if they are so small that they don’t understand you must make it safe, so they never have an opportunity to handle them. That’s what responsible parents do. Negligent parents are due to have consequences for their lack of actions.
You’ll never get a spring like the one in the scarab 2 gen 2 from microtech again. They used a diff company for those springs bc they were so much thicker
I would like to see how many times you can open a scarab before your thumb gives out. This wasn't my first take.either so I had been opening it with that thumb over a dozen times.

That’s Microtech’s way of cutting costs via less machining💸🧐Definitely bothers me.
Agreed. I notice the less wide blade too. Cost cutting. It’s the last MT I bought. Not so interested any more.
If I had a previous gen I'd say not enough reasons to upgrade.
Yup, that's why I don't think I'll keep it. It being a proof Run makes it tough though

I have heard of issues here and there for sure. Nothing indicating a big trend but I have seen a few. Microtech will take care of you though
Their Hera2s have a documented history of blade bounce back. That was my first and last experience with any of the gen3 pieces.
Is the new Scarab harder to deploy than the new gen MTs like they were last gen?
My heart says slightly, but it might just be an illusion. I wish there was a way to measure the actual pressure required to deploy these.
