I’ve been a fan of Van Halen since the my HS days, 70’s but the sharpest sound they ever had was the Sammy years. Eddie was primo during the FUCK tour and Balance.
Look, I'm going to put this short and sweet. Van Halen was Van Halen before Van Hagar. Diamond Dave and the boys were something no one had ever heard or seen at the time. It kicked ass on so many levels and still does. That original and only VH still rocks the house like no one and we can name off a slew of songs that would blow VHagar out of the water any day. But, Van Hagar had it's time as well and were successful too. They had their fan base and were a respectable band with numerous hits to go along with it. But to say Hagar was the man you must be living in another planet, if you don't know the history of the band.
I totally get what your saying. They were truly ahead of their time. But I believe that the music they produced with Sammy were so much more musical. They were less showy as their songs with Dave. And it was more focused on producing great music. If you listen to their songs from 5150 to Balance. There's a pretty big difference in style. And Eddie's guitar tastes really changed. I prefer the songs with Sammy because of the musicality. The structures, the meanings, and the overall quality of the recordings. But the Dave songs are more catchy and more for showing off. You can see that with Dave, the fans are jumping and rocking along. While with Sammy, the fans are emotionally connected with the music as you can clearly see here. Whether or not you prefer Dave or Sammy is entirely up to ones tastes. Because the facts are pretty even for both.

Sammy was the man, 4 straight #1 albums.. Unheard of. DLR VH raw and powerful...great band. But lets not forget ice cream man and dancing in the streets crap and other covers. And Sammy was to pop right? Like "jump"? Which went #1 and propelled that album to #2 on the charts
