This is the first you tube post I have ever made. I bought my first Van Halen album in Japan as an exchange student from Australia back in 1998 when I was very young. I have and always will consider Van Halen the first band I ever loved. I miss their music. I miss hearing good lyrics backed by a guitarist that knows how to take feeling to where it needs to go...turning for a short moment rock into modern opera, to a place that is personal and yours forever, but then bringing it back to ground, so it is not lost in some aesthetic or abstract moment but made for us all, all who might ask "my God I hope my efforts are worth it". This song like so many Van Halen songs touched that part of us. That part of us, for my part that said "is what I am going through...normal". In these songs was expressed the sentiment of the 20 year old who doesn't think that much of himself but says 'jump' to the hot-ish but quiet chick in the corner... cos he is on a youthful roll, this same guy despite a few years if fun and happiness finds out that, with the same girl that it is not all roses and wine. He finds that it is tough to build a life together, that it takes...Dreams...and with youthful enthusiasm they both pursue those dreams, and achieve much, and while they are 'standing on top of the world' they each ask themselves, what have I given up to be here what have I missed, and is it worth being with this person?' These doubts indicate they each want more, as people in their late 40s often do want more, and this is where I feel we are with this song. There is love here, oh yes but also desire, not for a person but for the alternative, the difference, the proof that the grass may not be so greener and therefore, despite being all we hope to aspire for, love in this case, is not enough.

Even though I was an 80's hairband, hard rock kinda kid, when Sammy joined VH and put out 5150, that was my epiphany moment we have sometimes. They blew everyone else out of the water... they just kept putting out hits but the best thing was the songs that didn't get radio/MTV play were the best songs on the albums....
This song is one of the best songs I've ever heard. I got married the year Balance was released. We had an official "wedding song", and this was our unofficial one. I've seen VH with all three frontmen. Yes, I saw Gary Sherrone.. NOBODY and I mean NOBODY can even come close to Sammy. I've seen him with the Wabo's, Chickenfoot and was lucky enough to catch a Circle show in Vegas a while back. The man is almost 70, and other than maybe Myles Kennedy, he has the best voice in Rock today. I was hoping at some point Eddie and Alex would finally get their head out of their asses and have Mikey and Sammy do one last tour. I've seen VH in one form or another 23 times. I was hoping for 24..
Mark, I too saw VH with all three frontmen. After Dave left and Sammy joined they were MY band. My wedding into song was "Dreams". I've seen Sam & Dave, VH with Sammy & Wolfie & Chickenfoot. Had ticket to see the Circle till the world stopped. Hopefully, I'll catch them before they hang it up. At least we can say we saw EVH!! Godspeed Eddie!

I agree, but try telling that to David Lee Roth fans. For me, Sammy is a hundred times better than Roth. Van Halen have become a joke now, with DLR and Eddie's son on bass. It's a pity, because Van Halen still had it in them to make great albums. Such a shame.
