Many of you have been asking me if I regret straight piping (removing the backbox) my car, a 3.0i Z4.
Now that I've had the mod for a little over a week, I thought it'd be a good opportunity to speak about whether I think it was a mistake, or not.

As a 'counter' perspective to your summary (from the view of a 21 year old), I'm a 55 year old (old to get!) multiple Z4 owner and would say the following (I own a 3.0Si, Z4M and Alpina Roadster S):
On my 3.0Si any minor modification that I've done, I have regretted and put back to standard. That includes even putting the 2 foams back in my induction 'sound generator' (even with one taken out it got too annoying for me on long journeys and sounded a bit 'fake' to me) and even taking off my stubby and putting the whippy aerial back on. But all of that is from the perspective of an old driver!
The only change I've ever made on that car without regrets is ditching the Runflat tyres. If I didn't live in the UK and somewhere with smoother roads I'd even consider RFTs again because a recent rear puncture on a non-RFT left me completely stranded!
I was different when I was 21! I'd try some pretty radical mods too...Tried to turbocharge my first car which was a 2002tii...which I didn't realise on a RHD car is nigh on impossible!

I'm driving a Z4 roadster too but in a 2007 3.0si model (with the N52). Have you heard from anyone if the drone is as bad on this model too? I'm considering the back box delete too.
I got mine done with carbon fibre tail pipes. The way I see it. Look at the car…….. now it sounds like it looks…….f#¥kin AWSOME✊✊✊✊✊✊✊✊✊✊✊✊✊
watched a couple videos now. good stuff so far. I left the UK when I was 24 to go live in China (im now 34), and I can tell you your videos really make me miss the car life I wanted when I was your age. buying a cool car and doing some mods etc was so much fun. Im coming back to the UK this year but I think my time for 2 seaters has passed haha. but still its fun to watch you have fun. Keep it up.
Hey Joe - that’s quite the move! Where about’s in China? I’ve been to Shanghai before - super cool place, would love the opportunity to live out there one day. Never too old for a 2 seater, my dad bought a Z4 after seeing mine and he’s in his 50s!

Honestly? Don't like it at all, the car have such a great sound when it leaves the factory. It's typical your age. Friends make each other crazy and eventually go back to the original. Gone money.

i straight piped my z4....drove it for a day and couldn't stand it....so went to Sheffield exhaust centre and they built me a custom back box and now it sounds perfect and still pops....i also noticed a loss of power with reduced back pressure from removing the box...wouldn't recommend it!

It’s an upgrade in a new car but I’m not sure on power. Make sure you get a 3.0, 3.0si or Z4M.
Enjoyed , watched your 2nd video on these, subscribed . I want one of these eventually, I’m 57 and although probably wouldn’t get round to having box removed, I’m sure I’d still enjoy the sound and drive of these things, I also like loud music at 57 but from mainly the eighties lol . I own a 3 series abs that’s beautiful too . 👍

Every car I have put a sports exhaust on, I have regretted it.
Stephen300o yeah but this is putting anything on it or adding anything you’re literally just taking away the muffler so you can hear the real sound of the exhaust. I’m going to do this to my 08 Si in about a month or so. I can’t wait to hear how much better it’ll sound without being muffled

Do you realise how loud an actual straight pipe is? I straight piped a 2.5 focus ST once and it was genuinely ludicrous, it was so loud it was hilariously embarrassing to drive & it droned at 20mph not even accelerating 😂

Discovered your channel recently. I have a E85 bought it 5 years ago 5K, still have it sitting in the garage and may have to get it out again. I changed the roof motor a few years, new drilled and groves discs, coil overs and a mid sport cat-back. My other half has the 2 litre e86. We should arrange a cruise sometime

Lol yeah agree, I am in my 50's and although I like loud music, I prefer it over having to listen to the engine while driving on the motorway LOL
I feel like a kid again driving my just straight piped dodge challenger. Everytime I hit the gas hard and it roars I start laughing at how loud and agressive it sounds. Best 200 dollars I've spent in a while.
Good stuff my friend but a straight pipe is incredibly misleading. A straight pipe is essentially have no exhaust at all as in no cats no resonator no muffler. So this is a quite misleading.
Finally got mines done
But kept my OEM back box just in case it gets old or annoying 🙂

How much $ did it set you back? any hp gains or it's only sound and looks?
When changing the type of exhaust you usually need a "tune up" to avoid backfires and burping.

Hey Joel, just stumbled upon this channel. Interesting video's. I'm driving the E86 Z4 3.0si, so now you got me planning a backbox delete :D My car has a Bastuck exhaust but I'm not to happy with the sound. It does backfire a bit, but hearing yours... Yeah I want that. Did you do any other performance mods to yours?

As long as it has a backbox, you can remove it!
M54B22 sounds great with backbox delete. Quite subtle.

Maybe what you should have done is fit sports CATS with 200CPI rather than 400 CPI which is more typical, I don't know specifics of Z4, but I did this to one of my cars... leave the back box in and you might not get the drone, but gain a little more performance and improve cooling by taking the heat faster away from the engine. I actually did a fall Larini install.
Thanks Alan, after a while you start to accept the drone for what it is - the sound it makes puts a smile on my face everyday. I know there’s more comprehensive systems out there, but this mod cost me £150!
Great vid, food for thought, thanks. The 3.0si engine in the 2006+ models and Z4 Coupe has a sound generator which pumps noise straight from the air filter box into the cockpit through firewall. Remove a sponge and it sounds awesome inside with no change on outside. You can retrofit them to older models.
Robert Baldwin the older cars have them too, including Joel's. He removed the foam, like any sane person :D

The sound generator mod was the first thing I did to my 2003 3.0i. Love it! You could give yourself the option and go for a switchable exhaust bypass valve? Then you can be either a grown-up or a child at the flick of a switch!
Question, Why not just have installed an electronic exhaust cutout? I was looking at installing them on my daughters car and have been looking for people who have done it. I was just wondering why you chose to remove the entire muffler rather than make it possible to just electronically cut them out, when you wanted?

Nope. Keeping my z4 pipes stock. That sound would make me drive the car much harder than i ordinarily would, just to keep hearing that sweet sound.

Apprently the back box mod on z4 forum doesn't drone, I think this is a case of moving the foam around in the back box and re welding it back together

At first, great choice to buy and drive a z4 3.0i.
i just wanted to let you know, that the stock exhaust system hast 3 mufflers: front-, mid-, and a back box. The first two are absorption-mufflers to eliminate the high frequencies, the backbox is a chamber-system to eliminate the low frequencies. The cats are close to the engine, and they are part of the headers;the cylinder 1-3 and 4-6 have their own header and cat.
I got myself a e85 3.0i just one and a half years ago, i removed the stock exhaust, and threw in a cat-back bastuck one, without the pre-muffler. So i got only the back-box.
I like your videos, and i think you understood the spirit of the Z.

I chose to do this:
I deleted mid box and changed rear box to magnaflow. I wish it backfires more, like your does :) Mines is weaker.
By the way, I did a ~5000km journey with it. When I was annoyed with same sound on highway, I just random slow down and speed up.

Hey mate! I'm just curious as to what sort of drone you get.... I have a 130i so should be the same sound etc... what RPM do you start getting some drone? I'm assuming like 2500 if your cruising at 70 mph or 120kph? besides that around town and stuff, no problems?
I made a video on this exact topic, which will probably show you exactly what you want to know! It drones at all RPMs, it’s all about how much throttle pressure you put on.

The foam is back in, so I can hear the exhaust better - but I’m intrigued to take it out again!

What’s the cheapest, best solution to make the car quieter once again? My car has been straight-piped for 4 months and I’m sick of it droning and consistently being super loud when driving uphills or on highways. Silencer inserts make it sound like a lawnmower, so that’s completely out of the picture. What do you suggest?
I’m not too sure, I don’t think there is any way to have the best of both worlds without spending a lot of money. Valve systems are the way to go if you want to control the drone but still have the loudness when you want it, however these are close to £1,000 than £100!

Hello, just stumbled across your channel. Quick question, ever since I saw a z4 when I was little I fell in love with the z series but I can not decide whether to buy a z3 (love the old look) or a z4 (more reliable maybe?) ... any opinions ?
Z4 has a glass rear top window, no cloudiness, vision is already limited in these little buggers.
just a small reason..my two cents :_]
the z4 is way more modern, with all the safety-aspects, so think about that.
the other way, the z3 is more old-school, and i think its a bit lighter.
I dont know how your preferences are :D

Haha, I had a corsa for my first car when I was 17, but the Z4 is a great car, relatively cheap to buy and run too for a young person!
I used to get about 28 in my 2.2l 320i. Damn Must have a seriously lead foot.

It doesn’t mate sadly, only the later, more powerful M’s were fitted with LSD as standard

Should have put an electric cut out valve on like I did with my V8 Healey then you have the best of both worlds with a switch in the car
Yeah that would be better, just wanted to make the car louder as cheaply as possible!
Think you may be in danger of burning out your valves due to a lack of back pressure that back firing you can hear is fuel not being burnt not good for your valves I know from past experience that back pressure is important in your exhaust system so think you would be better of getting a good aftermarket performance back box so to prevent damage think it’s what il do on my z4 coupe grate video again 👍

I have a couple of questions, how did you get the blinkers to light op when you lock the car? And do you have any idea what the mic on the steeringwheel is for?
It just does it when I unlock and lock the car, I think most cars do! It’s the pick up your voice when you’re on a Bluetooth call.
It's Joel well my z4 must be special because it doesnt do the blinkers when i lock/unlock, and this thing has bluetooth? I couldnt find anything on how to activate it, i still have the standard business radio in it and also the mic, had to put a bluetooth reciever in. Im gonna exchange it for an aftermarket radio in a couple of weeks

lol, noticed that too...my light came on, it was caused by a vacuum leak. no biggie, I bought the valve kit and replaced all the rubber/ plastic parts

In some instances it sounds great, but in my opinion you just sound like a bit of a knob driving around with it backfiring. No offence meant, but as a 35 yr old I just shake my head and laugh at cars that do that. Unless it’s a supercar! Won’t be doing it to my E89 28 M sport

I agree with Matt, I am 56 though, but if I had my Z4 in my early 20s I to would have had box removed, it's just of bit of fun really,and I suppose we are all about jealous because we are old farts now,lol, it's a very cheap way of getting that supercar sound ,even if it's just for a couple of summers, you can always put your old box back on,so enjoy it Joel, especially in these high temperatures we getting at moment, really enjoy your channel my Z4 is my second car and the channel inspires me to get out in my z more often.
Mostly because it gets done on some beat up old Vauxhall Corsa or a 10 yr old Audi A3.

That's a good attitude to have, but after 100 negative/troll comments spread across multiple videos, even the strongest person will get upset. I get called out on genuine stuff which is bad enough!
