    I have to admit that Thrawn has taken the mantel of one of my favorite Imperials. His cool head, tactical prowess and drive to understand his enemy seems incredible. I am in the middle of listening to a audiobook about Thrawn.

    I can imagine if Thrawn attempted a coup against Darth Sidious. He would've orchestrated an assassination on Darth Vader as well, before finding out that Luke Skywalker is Vader's son.

      Thrawn is loyal to the Empire because he wants the galaxy to be United under one voice
      He didn’t join the Republic or CIS because of how corrupt they were , and how many different voices divide the galaxy to get things done
      He saw the Empire as the best vision to Unite the Galaxy
      He admires Palpatine’s charisma and vision to bring the galaxy Under one voice, but saw his flawed his government and military was
      Thrawn even if he wanted to knew, he can’t rebel against Palpatine, he’ll only cause more chaos as the Empire is too well build around Palpatine’s existence
      If anything he had to wait under either he gradually changed the Empire from within or waited until Palpatine died to make his vision an efficient Empire a reality
      As for Vader, they admire eachother, they were in same mind of many things, including not agreeing to rely on Superweapons and invest on better quality ships and solders
      Thrawn tried to make his vision a reality at Rebels, having Palpatine’s and Tarkin’s permission to invest the excess resources on Lothal to create his TIE Defenders
      Had he won, he would have proven his point how preserving pilots in elite craft can be better for the Empire
      But the Rebels thwarted him and made him disappear, leaving Tarkin to fully invest in his Tarkin Doctrine idea to rely on Superweapons which was the Empire’s undoing

    I’ve always wondered how Thrawn would have reacted to the Clone Emperor if he had survived Bilbringii. Would he have followed or would he have suspected the Emperor’s deteriorating mind and faked his own death to run away and lead the Empire of the Hand?

    • @TheGreater-ScopeVillain
      @TheGreater-ScopeVillain ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Emperor’s mind was always fine. His clone bodies were deteriorating under the might of his own power, but his mind always remained as sharp and precise as ever. If Thrawn is truly loyal to Palpatine and his vision for the galaxy, he would remain Sidious’s humble servant even after learning of his resurrection, just as Allegiant General Enric Pryde did.

  • @ericblue5436

    I find it hard to believe that Sidious was concerned about how much a TIE Defender would cost considering that he could make them like how he was making Star Destroyers from Raxus Prime. (Don't mind me. I just like that stage in The Force Unleashed.)

  • @Loneguy22
    @Loneguy22 ปีที่แล้ว +27

    Another possible use of the TIE defender comes from the fact that they can follow a capital ship through hyperspace rather than be deployed in orbit.
    Imagine Star Destroyers show up first and take all of the attention. Then the Defenders show up and start dispersing in every possible direction. The result would be chaos as the defending party would have to shift their focus from a few large targets to multiple small targets.

  • @WilliamAGould
    @WilliamAGould ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Thrawn had enough sense to realize that going on a path of destruction, such as destroying planet Alderaan, only increase the support of the rebels.
    If he did not this sense, his pragmatism would have been similar to the idiocy of the Operative in Firefly/Serenity, in ordering the destruction of every location in the galaxy that has suspected to have had a rebel presence, suspected to have rebels on it, or suspect to expect rebels to arrive their.
    Fortunately, Thrawn preferred a less costly plan of hunter-killer squads chasing down the fleeing rebels.
    The space battle over Hoth, in Empire Strikes Back, shows that while the Imperial Fleet was so disorganized that Han was able to trick a Star Destroyer into almost colliding with two other Star Destroyers.
    One would expect that over the Imperial ships over Hoth, some captain would order to attempt to follow the rebel ships. It is likely Vader order the Imperial Fleet to state over Hoth, given he only going after the rebels as an excuse to find Luke and Luke's friends.

    1. Palpatine was all about generating mass fear, rather than order, so brutality and power suited him better than sleek efficiency in all things.
    2. Thrawn tended to stumble against Force users. As people, he usually had them pegged, but time and again in both canons, he failed to account for the more ridiculous things the Force was capable of - probably because it simply could not be analysed in such terms as art was.

It wasn't the fighter of the Empire because it was the best, it was designed to be more or less functional as a fighter and more importantly to be cheaply mass-produced. The venn diagram is time, cost, or quality, you can choose two. Well the Empire chose cheap and fast, so they sacrificed on quality.

    Thrawn is often held in high regard. Acceptable. But what people often ignore is Rebels often doesn't show his flaws. If rebels without much structure could give him that much commited, how would he fare against The Alliance? Plus, we can't really rely on him studying the culture of a people to inform his strategy because it only works once. Plus, art can tell you about a people, but not necessarily their strategy. Thrawn's entire war strategy relies on the plot armor that he has to face generals/admirals who think in a stereotypical way that manifests in their cultural art pieces. What if he faces an adversary that acts totally against their cultural expectations (Thrawn is considered the same among his people)?

    Not just all this but thrawn had like 65% (this is questionable because there’s some ships that he had like three of that like 8 were ever built and so on) of the imperial navies best ships out in the outer rim ready for war with the yuzhaan vong, his 7th fleet was the most well equipped and he had his tie defenders for his fleet. The only fleet better than his was Vaders and the time of Endor and yavin, Vader fleet wasn’t involved neither times which I feel is just a plot armor thing because vaders personal fleet “death squadron” had the executor, 6 ISD 1 star destroyers, 4 interdictors which thrawn had three which left only 8 were ever built, Vader also had some tie defenders va use he acknowledged thrawns ideas were the best for the imperial navy, he had some other Class two star destroyers and so on but I feel that these two fleets actually played a part in anything then the rebels would never win, especially thrawn, just like Vader analyzed their enemies and adjust their strategy for battles, thrawn was a genius of defense and offense, he knew what it would take to defeat his enemies. The thing that’s different about thrawn is that he doesn’t do something to please tarkin or sidious because they don’t truly wish to see the end of the rebels, they want the rebels to submit, whereas Vader just wants to end them and get it over with at any cost and that’s why thrawn likes Vader and wanted to please him at one time because one they have same war like minds and wants to win and see them ended, and also because thrawn knew who Vader truly is and he got along with Anakin so well too. Thrawn will no doubt have ended the rebels quick with his great tactics and with his superior 7th fleet

    The fact that Thrawn might have been able to defeat the Rebel Alliance is countered by the fact that he'd have never been given enough say in Imperial matters to do so... Palpatine would never have allowed it. The most likely outcome, had Thrawn stayed longer, is that the Emperor would have had him eliminated as being a potential threat to his own power. It wouldn't matter whether or not the Grand Admiral genuinely harbored such ambitions, only that Palpatine would if he were in his place.

    Very good research, and great points throughout the video however, I think the assumption made in this video is that Thrawn would have been green lit on everything he wanted. We already see that despite Thrawns capabilities and influence he still had to fight for the TIE Defender. Both the Emperor and Tarkin favored the Death Star over every other project, other Imperials also had a great distrust in Thrawn due to his alien heritage. It just seems unlikely that he would have command over the Imperial structure in such a way have as much impact as he would like too. Especially since for all his gifts he sucked at dealing with Jedi nonsense.

    honestly if the empire was smart they would have a small squad of the defender on each ship, and in the long run with ships lasting longer, more pilot surviving and not needing to be replaced the costs woud have potentialy maade it cheaper to use the defender then the fighterer even if on a full scale. what costs more? needing to replace 100 fighters + pilot afther a fight or 10-20 defenders + pilots afther a fight? even if 10x the price on the defender when looking at the costs over time the defender would probably be worth it in the end. afther all the more experienced a pilot got the smalle chance for them to die.

    The thing is that the solution to the Rebellion was never going to come down to tactics and battles. You can't control a million systems no matter the size of your military. So long as you're ana uthoritarian regime, the more repressive you are, the more resistance there will be.
    The Empire nationalized and institutionalized slavery, inflicted multiple acts of genocide, and undertook military actions that involved the slaughter of billions of sapient non-combatants.
    Peace would always involve a level of compromise, political institutions willing to engage in reform and negotiation, and accomodation. Which is the complete opposite of what Palpatine wanted.
    Thrawn may win tactical battles, but he will not win the war. Resistance would continue and spread. Things like superweapons and the Death Star were supported by the instituion of the Empire itself. The Emperor and Tarkin would push for them no matter what.
    Thrawn had his blind spots - politics was it. At least once in the Chiss Ascendancy he was manipulated by one group of aliens he was dealing with to exterminating their rivals. The power games and politics of the Empire would always limit his reach. He would be an elite squadron commandr - but if he ever aspired to be higher he would be brought down by those with more political support - an alien can only go so far in the xenophobic Empire.
    Thrawn would never have full control of anything beyond his personal squadron - we see in the side games he plays with Tarkin and Krennic that he can never get support for full blown manufacturing of the TIE Defender - the improved model only has the prototype made and was never readied for full scale production or the kinks worked out. He's not going to get to design the pilot training program - the Imperial military was institutionalized by Palpatine to foster undermining and backstabbing in the ways of the Sith and to ensure that no one ever got a large personal power base.
    All the advantages here require Thrawn to have unfettered control and access to large swathes of the Empire - training, R&D, deployment.. Which he'll never have due to the nature of Imperial politics - and Palaptine not wanting to set someone up as a possible threat to himself, knowing Thrawn is ultimately loyal to the Chiss Ascendancy, not himself.
    And.. On a tactical level, don't sell Ackbar short. Ackbar is the man (or fish) that brought up the Alliance from beyond small starfighter and raider groups to an organized navy with a heavy capital ship doctrine. Thrawn inherited the military stylings and tactics of the Chiss and the Empire. Ackbar came up with an entirely new doctrine and method of fighting and building up a naval force from the ground up. Ackbar's forces within a year or so of the Battle of Endor completely defeated the Empire and brought it to a negotiated peace.

    • @Wedgekree
      @Wedgekree ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thrawn was a tactical genius - Ackbar was both a tactical genius and a strategic one. Thrawn may be able to ambush Ackbar, but Ackbar is far from helpless. Many of Thrawn's plans are extremely complicated and require everything to go off perfectly well - it's often his subordinates that mess them up when they don't operate exactly as commanded - Governor Pryce, Konstantin..
      In large scale engagements iwth more than a few ships Thrawn often faced issues where his subordinates would not follow his orders exactly and would let things like glory or presonal objectives take priority. The defeat of the Rebel strike at the Battle of Lothal is a tactical victory but a strategic disaster with the destruction of the TIE Defender program and much of Lothal's infrastructure. Even with no space whales and a total defeat of the Rebel raiders, it's still a huge net loss for the Empire - several star destroyers, a large industrial and mining planet..

    • @fsdf4311c
      @fsdf4311c ปีที่แล้ว

      True

    • @Wedgekree
      @Wedgekree ปีที่แล้ว

      And remember the TIE Defender was horrifically expensive to produce/develop. It took significant enough resources that redirecting some of the resources being used to produce it to the Death Star was considered substantial enough to make the DS be finished faster.
      The destruction of planetary infrastructure (in this case virtually all of Lothal's spaceport/fuel dumps/etc) was considered sufficient damage to derail the project. It's not just something that the Imperial Navy is going to mass produce and make mainstream.
      The cost for development and production of a single fighter in limited numbers for the Defender project was obscene. For something that likely only had a few hundred production models made by the Battle of Yavin (that we know of) it was uneconomic for even the Empire to develop. That's not even going into the issues that it went completely against all Imperial starfighter doctrine, the Tarkin doctrine (rule by fear), the Imperial Navy's admiralty/doctrine (big capital ships).
      Separately even if Thrawn doesn't end up MIA at Lothal/Lothal is a victory, it still has negligible effects on the Rebellion (short term). Thrawn will not be put in charge of pursuit of the Death Star plans when they go missing (that's Krennic's pet project and we've seen that Krennic loathes Thrawn). Thrawn prefers a tactically oriented Navy, which is completely contrary to Tarkin's preferences - Thrawn will go nowhere near the Death Star or Yavin.
      So the DS is still blown up, the Rebellion explodes in size/scale. Thrawn will not be a part of Death Squadron (that's Vader's personal command to chase Skywalker, Thrawn is too independent for Vader/Palpatine to tolerate). The Mon Cala cruisers (very likely) sitll happen and they escape/get refitted. Thrawn may wing single, and significant engagements, but he won't be winning huge campaigns against the Rebellion - he has a single squadron/task force, huge galactic level eevnts will only be run by Vader - even if Thrawn makes a discovery, Vader is the one who pursues it. If Thrawn finds something, pursues it on his own and reports it 'late' then Vader or Palaptine will kill Thrawn for taking too much initiative.
      Thrawn at Endor will not happen due to it being purely an event for the Sith. Even if he is there remember that it's Palpatine directing the battle. Point blank we see Piett saying they can't advance due to the Emperor's personal directives. Once the DS II blows up and Palpatine/Vader are dead Thrawn will go on a fighting retreat just as he's not the type to stay in a battle no matter the circumstances. Imperial morale will be breaking so he -will- act to preserve the lives of the men udner his command, which means keeping the task force intact enough to withdraw. Vader/Palpatine/Luke is very much separate from the space battle so will happen no matter what.
      Post Endor? Thrawn's loyalty is to the Chiss Ascendancy, he knows what Operation Cinder is - Palpatine's pettiness if he fell to take the rest of the galaxy with him. The Empire is disintegrating - Thrawn will take what assets he can and withdraw into Chiss space even if he's still around. He'll see Palpatine openly sabotaging what's left of the Empire (randomly withdrawing huge numbers of craft to the Deep Core) and know there's no chance for survival.

    • @ZoeMalDoran
      @ZoeMalDoran ปีที่แล้ว

      While chasing the Falcon in Empire Strikes Back, and thinking the ship escaped into hyperspace, Vader tells his men to "Calculate every possible destination along their last known trajectory" . Before Disney, it was always possible to do hyperdrive tracking, but you had to be close to the target to accurately get their jump angle, and have access to enough computing power to figure out the probable destination. Following someone into hyperspace is a lot easier than computing where they're going to drop back into realspace so you don't overshoot. The Rebels came up with ways to exploit this, such as doing a hyperjump on a random course before dropping out of hyperspace after a minute or less and then jumping to their real destination.

    • @PariahRonin
      @PariahRonin ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ZoeMalDoran Yes - but that's different. That's calculating the possible destinations of a freighter with Star Destroyer's computer and help of a space wizard after a jump has occurred... Not the same as following a fighter following into hyperspace with another fighter without having any idea where the first fighter is going on a moments notice.

    • @ZoeMalDoran
      @ZoeMalDoran ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PariahRonin yes, but as I said, you could still do it. You could still jump right on someone's tail and be going in the same direction as them. It happened a bunch of times pre-Disney. The thing is that without the Force, or special equipment like in Episode 8 and 9, once you're following them in hyperspace the hard part is knowing where to stop in order to stay on their tail when they revert to realspace. Calculating direction is a lot easier than calculating how far the other person intends to go in that direction... it's not impossible, but it is improbable :)

The whole "art thing" went well beyond suspension of belief. The lizards were a bit of a strange thing as well, lizards that block the power of the force?
    The writing also seemed very middle of the road, I have not read a zahn book since as he did not impress me as an author. Though I will say his work is still far superior to anything disney has shat out.
    To me this character just comes across as a Gary Stu just like Rey and her Mary Sue powers.

    No, what you had with Thrawn was not infallibility or invulnerability. What you has was bad writing by Timothy Zahn. “The enemy is in the triangular formation and favored clay pottery of the genetic style in the ninth century, and I therefore predicted the rebel fleet will attack here“. What?? Thrawn’s powers bordered on the supernatural and it was obvious he (Zahn) had been tasked with replacing Sidious with villains equal to him, that is over powered. The same thing can be seen in his dark Jedi master, who manages to completely dominate Luke Skywalker for the early part of the series. Despite Luke, having taken down his father, at least the second most powerful Jedi to have ever lived. Those books were not particularly good, and they were not an auspicious beginning to the extended universe of Star Wars, I wish people would stop idolizing Thrawn and come up with something a little bit more believable. And get better books.
