    Steve "The Voice" Perry not only was the best at what he did, but EVERY song that he sang came from his inner being. You watch his face while he is singing his song, no matter what it is, he is into it. I was blessed to see him on stage and he was amazing. Have fun enjoying Journey!

    Steve Perry was/is known as The Voice for a very valid reason. I was lucky enough to see Journey live back in the 80s and let me tell you, they were AMAZING. Very few groups can compare today.

      I was somewhat disappointed when I saw them in 1983. They seemed tired compared to the warmup act,Bryan Adams! Steve's voice was nowhere as good as in this video, must have been late in the tour!

    Jonathan Cain said Steve Perry recorded the studio version of Mother Father in one take. His vocals are so beautiful and emotive. Steve wrote or co-wrote most of Journeys iconic songs with Jonathan Cain and Neal Schon who has said they were able to write the music with so much range because of Steve's vocal capabilities. When Jonathan first heard Steve he said there was "no way" Steve could sound as good live as he does in studio recordings. Check out The Escape Tour live from Houston 1981. There will never be another Steve Perry, many have tried, but no one comes close to The Voice.

    Steve Perry, Neal Schon, and Steve Smith are arguably the greatest musicians of their era. Steve Smith is among the greatest drummers of the last 50 years!

  • @marshabailey1121
    @marshabailey1121 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    No question that the 80s fashions are nowhere to be seen these days. But...can anyone sing like Steve right now? No auto-tune, no lip synch, no tracks...Just a guy singing. Steve Perry never struggled; he had perfect vocal technique. He had an extraordinary mixed voice, which means that the tone was the same from the bottom to the top of his vocal register. There were few times when he actually went into falsetto. And because he was a tenor altino, most guys could not even approach his upper register, much less nail the top notes like it was nothing.

    • @marshabailey1121
      @marshabailey1121 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The other cool lthing is that, in the studio, Steve laid down this entire track in one go.

  • @monchorga
    @monchorga ปีที่แล้ว +29

    When they recorded this song in the studio Steve did it in one take. You got it right it is effortless for him to sing, it comes naturally. Granted he had been singing several songs previously before he got to his one. His stage presence is the best, he likes to interact with the crowd. Here's the link to the full Live In Houston 1981 concert. th-cam.com/video/73hD2BJ1BBs/w-d-xo.html After watching this live performance, there won't be any doubt in your mind that Steve "The Voice" Perry is the greatest vocalist of all time in rock. And there were many great ones from back in the day.

    I had the privilege of seeing Journey on this tour and on tow other tours with Perry at the helm (yes I’m that many years old) and they were phenomenal. Perry never missed a note and Schon/Cain/Vallory/Smith were all amazing in their own right. I laughed when he said that Schon’s first solo wasn’t that hard…it wasn’t hard for him because he has been playing professionally (with the likes of Carlos Santana) since he was 15!!! I was saddened when the Perry fronted lineup parted ways…I saw them earlier this year and they were still good with Schon KILLING it on guitar, but nothing could compare with Perry out front.

    Great reaction! Here is why Steve Perry is the best in my opinion (yes, better than Freddie!): Emotion - nobody makes you feel the song like he does. He pulls you into the story. Mercury's only emotion was adding grit to his vocals. Vibrato - it is natural and consistent. Freddie's was so inconsistent, and he admitted he struggled with it. Pitch - Perry's pitch both live and in the studio was impeccable. Freddie was often pitchy, going a bit off-key. Control - not just pitch and vibrato, but the way he can seamlessly bounce from high-to-low notes was unmatched. Influence - Perry drew from the great R&B / Black Gospel-type singers (Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding), which you can really hear in this video. Mercury was trained in opera (I hate opera!).

    I was 12 when this album came out. Like all Journey fans during that era, our formative years were musically captured by the supernatural-like vocals of Steve Perry and the sound of this great band, then and for years to come. Good to see the younger generation of fans appreciate their sound and recognize such beautiful music because unfortunately it's not made today!

    This performance is why so many people regard Steve as one of the greatest vocalists ever. Check some of the R&B tunes the band jammed on the Time3 set - he's amazing. And don't underestimate Neal Schon (guitar) he actually founded Journey- after he left Santanna's band in the early-70's. He's a phenomenal talent, too.

    I really enjoyed watching your reaction to Mother, Father, thank you so mich. I've been a huge Journey fan for many years, and I feel so fortunate that I grew up during that time. I feel like we had some of the best music. Steve Perry's voice is so angelic and magical. There are so many songs of theirs that I love, but a few that I could think of for reaction videos would be "Winds of March" from 1978, "Faithfylly," ""Still They Ride," Don't Stop Beleivin'," and "Who's Cryin' Now?"

    Steve Perry's "regular" singing voice is pure, but in this song he uses a whole range of styles: some raspy rock scream, some soul, and then he goes from that sound seamlessly into the tone that blends on the harmonies, and then the falsetto that has the same tonal quality as the rest of his range.

    Not falsetto. Perry was a tenor altino then, a very pure voice that sang up in soprano range. It is a type of countertenor but not a common one.
    The nickname The Voice was given him by Jon Bon Jovi.

    I was at this concert in Houston at the Summit (which is now Joel Osteen's church) in 1981. Little did I know then that this concert would become one of the most iconic Steve Perry live performances EVER. The concert (as seen in other songs as well) was flawless. The band were all at the top of their game which only made Steve's vocals that much better. BTW, it is said by Steve that he performed this song in the studio in ONE take. Check it out. Also, check out the isolated vocals of Steve Perrry's voice on these songs. All talent. No machines, no autotune...just men with their instruments and microphones. It is the way music should be presented.

    Hello. I subscribed to your page through Journey, especially Steve Perry, who in my opinion is one of the greatest interpreters that have ever existed and is highly underestimated. After looking at countless criticisms of Journey's performances, I haven't come across any that say Steve isn't voice privileged. I am also a fan of Mercury and even so it seems to me that it is debatable in terms of vocal capacity. Mercury was a great Showman but Perry for me is the voice. Many judge Steve for not having the reaches of before, but what would have happened if Mercury had to suffer the same judgment today? It's not fair. Steve should be recognized for what he left us and what he can provide now. He did not die and he did not have such a controversial life, he did not have a movie and the new generations know him. But, that does not detract from his unparalleled contribution to music. Hopefully and the new generations can know about him. I thank you so much for taking the time to get to know him and I hope you make him known because he deserves it. Thank you
