  • The scout series was a low-cost introductory line of the postwar Lionel sets. The ancestor model was the 1654 offered in 1946. In the 1948 catalogue, Lionel introduced the scout series with the first loco, the 1001. They continuously offered scout sets until 1954. This video shows most of the catalogued locos of that first period.

Can you please tell me what bell goes off at 1:22. I need to get that for my layout. If you have a video on ringing and flashing accessories that would be great. Like to add light and sound to my layout to add dimension to it.

This is the 76 ´Warning bell and shack´ produced between 1939 and 1942. It uses the same housing as the 45 gateman, but hosts a bell. I introduced it in my video ´Classic Lionel Trains - Crossings, Shacks and Gatemen 1923-1942´at 3:40.

I never did understand the rationale behind the different couplers.

Maybe they tried to sell it as cheap as possible and saved costs where ever possible. The scout couplers are much simpler as compared to the standard knuckle couplers which had to be made out of metal. The first scout model, the 1001 is really cheap with its plastic body and plastic motor. After two years they obviously realized that this was the wrong policy and all sets thereafter were offered with knuckle couplers (and more expensive).
