Unlike Europe, which is currently building long term nuclear waste storage, the USA is probably never going to build long term storage. Which means highly toxic and radioactive waste staying in temporary storage forever. And these temporary storage facilities are incredibly vulnerable to being destroyed by climate change. So this is probably a bad idea, at least when compared to building more solar, wind, and hydro-electric plants. Especially since solar and wind electricity is now the cheapest to build infrastructure for and operate now, since 2018.

3:50 Fun fact: Anne Burford's EPA adopted a new definition that allowed an existing factories to get permits for new equipment that did not meet emissions standards as long as the total emissions from the plant itself did not increase. The NRDC sued the EPA in 1984 for, you know, not PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT like they're supposed to and Chevron (as an affected party) countersued to keep Burford's policy in place. The courts made a ruling that unless Congress specifically defines what counts as "protecting the environment" the EPA can draw the lines wherever they want. That ruling, known as "the Chevron deference" is maybe the most important ruling in SCOTUS history, because people often argue with executive agencies about what's allowed and what's not and it allows judges to say "Hey, it isn't illegal for city council to put the pollution factory next to the lung disease hospital. I worked on a recycling project as a consultant with exxon once and it was the most surreal experience. There are people there who are trying to do the whole take things down from the inside approach and get them to invest in renewables, but leadership doesn't believe in anything they work on. So any renewable project they presented was dead on arrival. It was incredibly disheartening.

Just to be clear, it's important to note that the most fearful predictions probably won't come true, but climate change is already affecting us today, stirring up record heat waves, super charging hurricanes throughout the world, causing devastating droughts, and otherwise destroying our ecosystem. Human beings will still be around in 100 years, but our lives will be harsher, poorer, and more miserable as a result of the actions (or lack of actions) we're taking today. Even beyond that, ending fossil fuel use means that our energy prices won't be dependent on the whims of foreign dictators and our environment will be cleaner, with far fewer pollution. It's a win-win for everyone not working in the fossil fuel industry (IE, 99% of us)

They purposely disadvantaged the US against China, because China and India were "developing" nations. There was actual legitimate reason to oppose it. It would literally give China the economic edge over the west, and make climate change that much worse. What we needed, was to enforce these rules across all countries. If a developing country didn't, I would deadass be fine if we did some Iraq shit on them. Better if we invaded Iraq over the environment than over whatever we did.

1970 I was in 4th grade & our text book described the water cycle, including greenhouse effect, the hole in the ozone layer, co2 and chlorofluorocarbons. That was a big word for hair spray, but this kid learned it. My family had a refrigeration business, and we had alternative refrigerants back then. When replacing a compressor, we would dump Freon into the air, but started recovering it & reusing it. It saved lots of money. Pollution costs money.

Well the sun puts the heat on earth to make it short. Imagine a black car vs a white car in the sun. The black car absorbs more heat and thus it will be warmer than a white one. The same is the earth with greenhouse effect. With a stronger greenhouse effect the earth absorbs more heat than with a weaker (so with less CO2 in the athmospere). So we are kinda turning our white/gray car slowly into a black car. Altough maybe a bit different, in principle its the same.

As an older geologist than you, I watched all of this in real time. Which is why I laugh when I hear about change happening now. I've heard this song and dance before
Reagan at least probably thought he was doing the right thing at the time, even if he set the stage for some of the worst trends in modern US history. I didn't hear much about Carter growing up (my parents were still fairly young when he left office) but he seems to be one of the few US presidents who put his principals ahead of personal gain, and although he did do a surprisingly large number of good things both directly and indirectly during his administration the fact that he refused to use violence during a specific crisis probably cost him reelection.
It's not all rainbows and sunshine. Jimmy Carter was very openly supportive of the venezuelan elections years after the Chavez "presidency" had already caused a mass Exodus of venezuelans out of the country (in addition to stuff like getting rid of term limits, imprisoning political rivals, and other really undemocratic stuff). Of course whenever the legitimacy of the venezuelan election system was called into question they could hide behind the endorsement of Jimmy Carter (they also simultaneously call America an undemocratic evil empire so idk how to read into that). As a half venezuelan this was always a big sticking point for me when talking about Jimmy Carter. But yeah it's hard to find anyone as vile and unlikeable as Ronald Reagan.

It's much easier not to use refrigerants than not to use energy. That's why the ozone layer was an easier fix than CO2 concentration.

Fun fact: Anne Burford's EPA adopted a new definition that allowed an existing factories to get permits for new equipment that did not meet emissions standards as long as the total emissions from the plant itself did not increase.
The NRDC sued the EPA in 1984 for, you know, not PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT like they're supposed to and Chevron (as an affected party) countersued to keep Burford's policy in place. The courts made a ruling that unless Congress specifically defines what counts as "protecting the environment" the EPA can draw the lines wherever they want.
That ruling, known as "the Chevron deference" is maybe the most important ruling in SCOTUS history, because people often argue with executive agencies about what's allowed and what's not and it allows judges to say "Hey, it isn't illegal for city council to put the pollution factory next to the lung disease hospital. If you want to change it you need to elect new city council members". This is actually a good thing for anyone that thinks lawsuits are a bad way to create legislation, and that elected legislators should make laws, not unelected judges.
But here's where SHIT GETS WILD.
Anne Burford divorced her husband in 1982 and married the head of the Bureau of Land Management, then ran off with him and abandoned her three teenage children. She also resigned in disgrace from the EPA in 1983 when she was charged with contempt of Congress for refusing to clean up superfund sites.
Now, if your mom (presumably) cheated on your dad and abandoned you, then her career as a politician ended in disgrace, there's a good chance you'd grow up to be resentful of her and, by extension, her legacy that is "Chevron deference", right?
But there's like a 0% chance that one of her teenagers would get to a place where they could change a SCOTUS ruling, no matter how many mommy issues they have. Right?
Ms. Burford was born Anne McGill and the head of the BLM, her second husband Robert Burford, was where she got the name "Burford". But her name while she was the head of the EPA, the name of her first husband David and the name of her children with him, was "Gorsuch".
Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch *hates* the Chevron deference, and has repeatedly called for it to be eliminated.
One of the most foundational parts of the modern US legal system might change because one of the Justices of the Supreme Court of the United States resents his mom for abandoning their family when he was 15.

I worked on a recycling project as a consultant with exxon once and it was the most surreal experience. There are people there who are trying to do the whole take things down from the inside approach and get them to invest in renewables, but leadership doesn't believe in anything they work on. So any renewable project they presented was dead on arrival. It was incredibly disheartening.

I remember this. My parents hovered over the news, trying to help stop climate change. I knew about this in the 70's, and they keep saying the same thing - we will be gone in 30 years! Really? Thank you for bringing this up to let folks know this has been known for quite a long time.
Just to be clear, it's important to note that the most fearful predictions probably won't come true, but climate change is already affecting us today, stirring up record heat waves, super charging hurricanes throughout the world, causing devastating droughts, and otherwise destroying our ecosystem. Human beings will still be around in 100 years, but our lives will be harsher, poorer, and more miserable as a result of the actions (or lack of actions) we're taking today.
Even beyond that, ending fossil fuel use means that our energy prices won't be dependent on the whims of foreign dictators and our environment will be cleaner, with far fewer pollution. It's a win-win for everyone not working in the fossil fuel industry (IE, 99% of us)

They purposely disadvantaged the US against China, because China and India were "developing" nations.
There was actual legitimate reason to oppose it. It would literally give China the economic edge over the west, and make climate change that much worse.
What we needed, was to enforce these rules across all countries.
If a developing country didn't, I would deadass be fine if we did some Iraq shit on them. Better if we invaded Iraq over the environment than over whatever we did.

When I hear any good news about climate change I re-watch the youtube video "Carl Sagan testifying before Congress in 1985 on climate change" and it brings me back down to earth.

1970 I was in 4th grade & our text book described the water cycle, including greenhouse effect, the hole in the ozone layer, co2 and chlorofluorocarbons. That was a big word for hair spray, but this kid learned it. My family had a refrigeration business, and we had alternative refrigerants back then.
When replacing a compressor, we would dump Freon into the air, but started recovering it & reusing it. It saved lots of money.
Pollution costs money.
Every time I watch this channel I simply don't understand why there aren't more subscribers. Seriously, this is gold!

I have a question on a gas that traps heat vs what puts the heat there in the first place, but never found anywhere sensible to ask it and get a coherent answer.
Well the sun puts the heat on earth to make it short.
Imagine a black car vs a white car in the sun. The black car absorbs more heat and thus it will be warmer than a white one.
The same is the earth with greenhouse effect. With a stronger greenhouse effect the earth absorbs more heat than with a weaker (so with less CO2 in the athmospere). So we are kinda turning our white/gray car slowly into a black car. Altough maybe a bit different, in principle its the same.

Jimmy Carter is a pretty good dude from what I've heard.
Reagan is probably the worst person around.
Reagan at least probably thought he was doing the right thing at the time, even if he set the stage for some of the worst trends in modern US history. I didn't hear much about Carter growing up (my parents were still fairly young when he left office) but he seems to be one of the few US presidents who put his principals ahead of personal gain, and although he did do a surprisingly large number of good things both directly and indirectly during his administration the fact that he refused to use violence during a specific crisis probably cost him reelection.
It's not all rainbows and sunshine. Jimmy Carter was very openly supportive of the venezuelan elections years after the Chavez "presidency" had already caused a mass Exodus of venezuelans out of the country (in addition to stuff like getting rid of term limits, imprisoning political rivals, and other really undemocratic stuff). Of course whenever the legitimacy of the venezuelan election system was called into question they could hide behind the endorsement of Jimmy Carter (they also simultaneously call America an undemocratic evil empire so idk how to read into that). As a half venezuelan this was always a big sticking point for me when talking about Jimmy Carter. But yeah it's hard to find anyone as vile and unlikeable as Ronald Reagan.
