I think the thing people need to understand about Outlast 2 is the fact that this is a more personal tale, focusing on the character of Blake and the cults, not Murkoff. That's what people wanted, more of Outlast 1 but thankfully Red Barrels did what a sequel should and expanded in a different manor, through the people and not the big bad establishment. Don't get me wrong you need to stay true to the source material but don't keep it too similar
It’s just kinda lame how inconsequential this game is to the overall outlast story. It feels more like a spin-off than a sequel, like how the Catholic school stuff has nothing to do with murkoff. Like the epilogue comic basically just says “oh that game you spent god knows how long with? Who cares! Blake is catatonic and he’s not gonna have anything to do with Miles, Waylon, and Simon’s mission to stop murkoff.”
Always a bit ironic when people all talk about how they want open world games that always end up feeling empty and a bit more tedious but many will criticise a game like this for not not telling you where to go / not sign posting enough.
the ending to the first outlast probably doesnt make sense because you didnt play the whistleblower dlc. it feels like the book really closes at the end of that
Darker i mean not to understand the story, just to get some kind of closure to it. same with reading the comics. not required, but hey its nice to know why chris is Fucking Like That
*SPOILERS* Honestly, the ending just killed it for me. It just felt stupid, not really the whole constant flashbacks explained, but the whole anti-christ thing... I won't say it, but comparing what would happen from the original, there better be a good explanation for it. It felt more rushed and not a satisfying wrap-up to the plot at hand. Leaving more questions unanswered if anything.
I honestly don't understand the ending at all. the sun literally exploded and then the game ended... what does that even mean? Did the character die? Is everyone dead now? what happened to everything from the first game?
JackOfen Weird. Basically, you are clearly hallucinating and going insane throughout the game, which has to do with that sound and blinding light throughout the game, that has been hitting the village for a long time, and now is hitting you too. Because of your character's deteriorated mental state, you really can't trust hardly anything you see at the end of that game. The first game you saw what the Engine did to the inmates, but in the sequel you are subjected to the engine yourself and get to experience some of what those poor inmates were experiencing.
Personally, I will always and forever prefer the original Outlast over the sequel but that’s just me. It’s mainly because the original holds a very special place in my heart as the first game that truly scared me as well as the first game I loved enough to want to buy and play myself. The second one is fine, and I don’t hate it as much as other people do. It just didn’t (for me, at least) capture the simplicity the first game offered. I’m mainly blinded by personal bias and nostalgia.
I played them both at the same time and I gotta say you’re not blinded by anything. The second one isn’t nearly as charming as the first one. If the first game is a good exploitation film the second is a bad torture porn. Kind of a slog through barely connected violent set pieces that are all cheapened by the “actually Blake has just been crazy and essentially a variant the whole time” twist at the end that you have to read the comics to understand. It’s graphically leaps and bounds better and the gameplay changes are up to taste (not for me but I get what they were going for) but the story is just so weak and inconsequential compared to one and whistleblower and the comics. I hope Trials puts focus back on murkoff instead of hiding them behind 2 and a half cults and a Catholic school that can only be pushed aside with a comic
From what I've seen, the main "problem" with this game is that a lot of the enemies are one-hit kills, and in a fast-paced, panic-inducing game that encourages (and frankly requires) exploration, this is a problem. It was also a problem that in the original you could run around getting hit for half an hour before you died. Somewhere up the middle would be best, I think. I haven't played it, this is just what I've observed.
I seriously fucking love this game. I love it even more than the first one. I will always love the first one though. Outlast 2 took everything that made Outlast great and upgraded it to the top. The story, the gameplay, the graphics, the architecture, etc. I'll be honest, when I got done streaming this game I was so depressed about that ending. That's not a negative thing. I seriously love the ending. There's just something so good about it but I don't know what it is. The music? Jessica? Both? Neither? I may never know.
There's a fine line between "so hard it's scary" and "so hard it's annoying", and I think that for many people this game was just slightly on one side.
Although the lighting in this game usually provides a path and escape, I feel most people stayed in night vision mode instead of switching back and forth between night vision and having night vision off. It's a lot more difficult to see the lights since it all kind of blends together as opposed to having night vision off and immediately heading towards the light source.
I actually heard a bit of an opposite reaction in that critics complained the game hadn't evolved enough. The main criticism I read is that the game gives you no offensive options to compensate for the increased number of pursuers. Some people are more frustrated with than frightened of the gameplay loop of running around constantly with no way of fighting back, and the at-the-time recently released Resident Evil 7 proved it was possible to have combat and still retain a level of tension in a first-person horror game.
I'm glad to hear someone else agrees that the first game tried too hard at times (at least in terms of enemy designs). Basically I think both Outlast games are sort of a mixed bag.
I don't know, I agree I loved the school, but the game can become very trial and error at times, and constantly dying does take away from the horror. As for the Story, it was ok, but the way it's explained really isn't good, it's kinda bad actually... One note that's on a path by the boat that the game clearly wants you to go on, only one note.... I mean, I like some things in Outlast 2, Graphics are good, the School are was great, it had some genuinely good scares, etc. I wouldn't say it's an 8/10, maybe a 6/10. I get it tried something different, but it just doesn't execute it well for me.
I have to say, I agree on this. There are in my opinion just too much trial and error. You go to one place, BAM chase! Next place, BAM chase! And that's how it goes. And picking up notes and reading alot is not a good way of showing a story to its players. I never got the story, so me and my friends startetd to make up our own stories. (All were wrong). But the graphics are still good though.
OK but why is no one talking about the soundtrack of this game? Honestly I believe it was handled perfectly and everything in it, from the eerie choir singing to the fast and sharp violin notes on an ambient background, makes up 50% of the tention and scares. The best example is with Marta, even if you can't locate her, you KNOW she is there because of the high pitched choir accompanying her whenever she spawns, something which made me incredibly unsettled.
You know, every time I watch one of these reviews and see his PS4 collection, I can't help but wonder: Does he have hundreds of hard drives for his PS4, multiple PS4s, or just delete each game after playing through the main story? I've always assumed he's a trophy hunter as well, so the last one doesn't seem likely.
I'm with you here, I way preferred this one to the first. I personally would go so far as to say I love this game, and didn't quite get where most of the complaints came from. Your points on things like the signposting were dead-on, and people just needed to play this game more patiently and carefully than Outlast 1 or similar games. Great review, and loved hearing your thoughts on this one!
I will agree with him. Outlast 2 has some really shiny moments. Even though it has some things that lose its charm unlike the first one, but it has some really great ideas of being isolated, alone, and threaten from lunatics trying to kill you.
In regards to the ending, I’d have to respectfully disagree 100%. I felt the ending really answered no questions other than Blake’s relation to Jessica. When I finished, I was left with dozens of questions about what really happened in that village and why this was happening. The ending just left a sour taste in my mouth.
The way you (Caddy) feel about the level design of outlast 1 is the same I feel about Outlast 2. It was just too easy to get around enemies and all you have to do is run around and get to the next check point. The first outlast made me feel like I had to be patient and wait for an opportunity to escape.
I think that people didn't like this one very much because of lets plays. Watching the first one was triling and terrifying because the gameplay was new and it looked more difficult and scary to youtubers, but once they got used to it because of the first game this one didnt look as fun or challenging. Also they didn't seem so scared... people really like to watch things like that, call it morbid interest if you may.
I love all your videos, i agree with your opinion. I've seen all the outlast 1 stuff even the dlc and I still prefer outlast 2. The horror I feel is more intense, it's not the same old scene on repeat it feels like, more characters, more plot and story to get involved in and more theories, there are flaws of course but I agree that I prefer outlast 2. I hate games that just copy the game that was before it, there is no new creativity and so I like that there is a new story and isn't the same story and everything. But if you look at the theories it does connect to the first story.
My favorite moment in the game was actually, I feel, the most cliched moment: the raining blood. The way the shadows, atmosphere, and color give a sense of awe and dread I haven't felt in a game in a long time. Would still only give Outlast 2 a 7/10, but it's still definitely worth playing.
I honestly died around 80 times playing the game (I started to keep track about half an hour in) and around the half way mark i thought "why the fuck am I still playing this" proceeded by a solid minute of me trying to find a reason to keep playing to which I promptly put in blood born and had a way better evening.
Well, yeah. I agree with you when it comes to graphics and the scare factor of Outlast 2. Speaking of scare factor, what bothers me is that the scenery keeps changing. I know one of the stories of the game is that Murkoff is using some sort of mind control device which makes people see hallucinations, so that's why Blake is being transported to his childhood school and remembering his past, but that's the part that ruins the suspense. Example is that the player's being chased by the cult members and you feel the intensity of fright...but then later you're being transferred to school and its quiet again. Then you're being tranported back to town...and repeats the same scene afterwards. That's not necessary in my opinion. On the other hand, I felt the ending of the game is not satisfying at all. We see Lynn died of blood loss, fatfuck Knoth tried to convince Blake to kill the baby and killed himself. Blake then remembers Jessica then poof...The end. No satisfaction at all. At least in Outlast 1, we get to see Miles Upshur gets revenge on the pursuers, even if they killed him, we hear them suffer when the Walrider goes through his body. We also see the satisfying deaths of the pursuers like Chris Walker, Richard Trager and the guy who keeps taunting Waylon Park (forgot his name). The part where Waylon escaped from Asylum is so good. And wee see Miles somehow survived too, and the Walrider is now within him. I hope the third installment will have the same qualities like the 1st and the 2nd. Good graphics, scary elements, realistic environment, good plot, satisfying ending.
Thank you! Fuuuck me, I thought this game slayed the first in every way. Love the southern horror setting but I guess that's a bizzare sentiment. Cheers
Outlast 2 is one of the best and most hardcore survival horror games ever made and I also love how it has a little bit of layers of fear in there due to the school sections
Eh, the locker part had indication. You can see a locker door shaking as you run towards it. At least my friends and I thought that was it... Idk, maybe it was coincidence.
My ONLY two problems with outlast 2 were that: 1) it was TOO. FUCKIN. DARK. so dark that you can't even see the beautiful game designs the developers worked so hard for. 2) TOO. MANY. CHASE SCENES. It was as if there was no breathing space. You outrun one enemy, and the others right there waiting for you. Also, because of this it didn't give me time to feel connected to my antagonists. None of them are memorable and their death scenes were just lazy.
I liked two better, but I wasn't feeling the closure and that disappointed me in the end. Of course, I wasn't feeling the closure in the original either, and I have problems with the style of both, but overall those are subjective points. I thought it was a pretty decent game other than those things. I really liked Marta though, and I definitely agree with your criticism that they could've done a lot more with the characters.
Just compare the Review of Caddy and Angry Joe. Caddy is explaining himself and his arguments make sense. Joe is just screaming in hope his arguments gain value.
Xilefenko I mean just cause he screams doesn't mean his criticisms are less valid. Gordan Ramsey made his career on screaming at others mistakes, so what's your point besides just putting unwanted hate in someone else's video instead of joe's you coward?
It often feels to me that he always stands on the popular side of opinion which doesn't have to be a bad thing. But I can't take him seriously after his suicide squad review XD
He's always been the lovable hillbilly of the internet. The split in opinions about his content is generally whether he sometimes gets stuff wrong or sometimes gets stuff right. But I mean, to not completely put the man down, obviously the entertainment value is there and he does bring up attention-worthy points, whether you agree with their importance/validity or not
I always wonder why whenever I look at someone elses game review I see one comment insulting Joe. Don't get me wrong the dude is far from perfect and he says some DUMB things in the past but why do you feel the need to compare Caddy and Joe.
I was into the story, I was interested in the mind control. From what I've watched though, that wasn't dealt with enough. Like sure it's there, but why. Maybe it's secret stuff the youtubers I watched didn't find. But is there any explanation for where the baby actually came from? Neither of them were expecting it. That could have used more explaining I guess. Aside from the ending though I enjoyed watching the entire game.
@Alexandra Oskiera it’s a phantom pregnancy (fake pregnant) and before Lynn die, she said “there’s nothing here” (?) you can see the shadow that Blake was holding nothing.. the brightest light you saw in the game is Murkoff tower that give them hallucinations (sorry if my English is wrong)
My biggest issue with Outlast 2 is that it's focusing WAY too much on gore and shock and disgust instead of suspense and terror. The whole game just feels like it's trying to make anyone squeamish throw up at the gallons of blood and everpresent gore.
Gazi I was also critical or Whistleblower at the time for the same reason. And yes, Dead Space has gore, but nowhere near the amount of Outlast 2's levels. The best parts of Outlast 2 imo were the school, where there was gore and blood and trauma, but it was not everpresent. Gore is much more intimidating when it's in places you don't expect, like a space station or a school. When you're in a backwoods village that has mangled corpses and crucified bodies every 5 feet, it's much less off-putting.
lmao penis brothers? I do agree that Marta is pretty cool, I liked her a ton. I wish some of the other baddies got more screentime though, even Knoth seems kinda rushed? we spend the entire game just reading about him but when we actually meet him it doesn't come as a surprise. maybe that's just me though
I have been wondering pretty much the same as Caddy: why is this game getting so much bad critic? I haven't played it at all or the first one, but for me these games seem really similar. Of course there are differences, but not that huge that first game should be 9/10 and this one 5/10.
I really enjoyed the first outlast, but my first chase scene i accidentally skipped by running around the fortnite pickaxe lady (I cant remember her name, sry). And I ran around her accidentally without noticing...oops
I thought both games were almost equally on par with each other. Many of the criticisms of Outlast could easily have been applied to the original, but it's like reviewers have some kind of selective memory of that game.
Working on a game myself, I'm simply puzzled how a small team can create such great graphics. Really outstanding.

Batteries actually aren't used when reading notes, you just to get his thoughts on it.
I think Outlast 2 was scary...but I think the story was quite lacking in just a few areas. Just a few. I still don't quite get the ending of the game.
Yeah, for the first time after 3 years it's actually my birthday! Thanks, caddy :)
Thank you! Fuuuck me, I thought this game slayed the first in every way. Love the southern horror setting but I guess that's a bizzare sentiment. Cheers
Hey Caddy, Love your vids!
HE'S BACK LADS! OG CADDY IS BACK!
Tom Price
All hail daddy caddy, the super shag
HAIL!
HAIL!!!!!
Outlast 2 is one of the best and most hardcore survival horror games ever made and I also love how it has a little bit of layers of fear in there due to the school sections
I really enjoyed this game tbh. I loved the first game, and I don't think this is quite as good but still interesting and terrifying.
It's understandable that people don't like this one compared to the original. Though I loved this one a lot more than the first.
When you only listen to the video because you're too scared to actually look at the footage :)
Eh, the locker part had indication. You can see a locker door shaking as you run towards it.
At least my friends and I thought that was it... Idk, maybe it was coincidence.
I was hoping, Super Shag would say Zoinks in the game clips
My ONLY two problems with outlast 2 were that:
1) it was TOO. FUCKIN. DARK. so dark that you can't even see the beautiful game designs the developers worked so hard for.
2) TOO. MANY. CHASE SCENES. It was as if there was no breathing space. You outrun one enemy, and the others right there waiting for you. Also, because of this it didn't give me time to feel connected to my antagonists. None of them are memorable and their death scenes were just lazy.

Video uploaded on my birthday! Just so happened I did have a happy freaking birthday, Thanks Caddy!
Caddy is officially the *Unpopular Opinion guy*
I actually do agree with you, but I do think the first one is better 😊
Oh god , I thought for a moment that I am watching Caddy's earliest videos
I liked two better, but I wasn't feeling the closure and that disappointed me in the end. Of course, I wasn't feeling the closure in the original either, and I have problems with the style of both, but overall those are subjective points. I thought it was a pretty decent game other than those things. I really liked Marta though, and I definitely agree with your criticism that they could've done a lot more with the characters.
wow, seeing Caddy like this fills me with nostalgia goo...mmm warm.
I think both games were great, but that Outlast 2 was the more psychological and disturbing horror game.
11:36 since when does Outlast 1 ending doesn't make sense
5:34 got me so bad
Just compare the Review of Caddy and Angry Joe. Caddy is explaining himself and his arguments make sense. Joe is just screaming in hope his arguments gain value.
Xilefenko
I mean just cause he screams doesn't mean his criticisms are less valid.
+Xilefenko Unironic use of "XD". Minus 20,000 internet points.
ecks dee
He's always been the lovable hillbilly of the internet. The split in opinions about his content is generally whether he sometimes gets stuff wrong or sometimes gets stuff right.
But I mean, to not completely put the man down, obviously the entertainment value is there and he does bring up attention-worthy points, whether you agree with their importance/validity or not
I always wonder why whenever I look at someone elses game review I see one comment insulting Joe. Don't get me wrong the dude is far from perfect and he says some DUMB things in the past but why do you feel the need to compare Caddy and Joe.
Anyone think the Father looked a bit like Danny Devito's Penguin?
Outlast 1 is my favourite game to speedrun, I can complete the DLC in like 50 minutes
By far my favourite TH-camr by far.
A lot of people like outlast 2, but in my eyes, it seems like the ending killed it for a lot of them, but besides that I thought this was a great game
The main issue with Outlast 2 is that I'm really tired of the religious fanatic theme and thus the game is cheapened.
the school parts was the best of the whole game
Youre the only person who wished my a happy birthday :'D
7:33 So it's one of the few good things from the Alone in the Dark sequel then.
You want something really horrifying, they just announced a new Bubsy game!! AHHHHHHHH!
SHAGGY CADDY HAS RETURNED
lmao penis brothers? I do agree that Marta is pretty cool, I liked her a ton. I wish some of the other baddies got more screentime though, even Knoth seems kinda rushed? we spend the entire game just reading about him but when we actually meet him it doesn't come as a surprise. maybe that's just me though
This guy needs more subscribers
Caddy can you do a face reveal in the next episode?
I have been wondering pretty much the same as Caddy: why is this game getting so much bad critic? I haven't played it at all or the first one, but for me these games seem really similar. Of course there are differences, but not that huge that first game should be 9/10 and this one 5/10.
I really enjoyed the first outlast, but my first chase scene i accidentally skipped by running around the fortnite pickaxe lady (I cant remember her name, sry). And I ran around her accidentally without noticing...oops
in my opinion, the first 2 hours were great after that it just got boring because of so many CHASES! OMG THERE ARE SO MANY CHASES!
I thought both games were almost equally on par with each other. Many of the criticisms of Outlast could easily have been applied to the original, but it's like reviewers have some kind of selective memory of that game.
The one thing i really wanted to see was the protagonist from 1 come back with the wall rider as his 'pet'
Awee Caddy you missed a chance to use your "Demented" cutaway 😂
Is it just me or the fucking *la la la la subcribe* at the end is gorgeous
Super Shag's back at it again lads. Lovin' his Tekken 1 shirt, haha. I want one of those!
(before the video)
idk what outlast is and I probably don't even care but I'm bored off my ass so I hope ot gets the salvage.
Great review 👍
