Alexia Grim Because, Vexen(the guy being burned alive by Axel), is an asshole! Have you been played that part of Chain Of Memories? Sorry if you like Vexen or something, just saying. From personal experiences, I hate fighting against him. He’s the main reason why I never want to change the difficulty in Chain of Memories. And also, have a great day/night, and remember to stay beautiful.
You know, I could never get into Chain of Memories. It was pretty much always a cycle. 1.I boot up Re:Chain of Memories and begin the game 2.I get frustrated because I keep getting card broken early game or because of the my low CP 3.I quit the game 4.I later think "Chain of Memories isn't that bad, I just overreacted!" 5. Back to step 1.
That's how I feel about Pokemon games most of the time. 1. Boot up the game 2. Choose a Pokemon and try to play the game, keep getting stopped by Professor for annoying reasons 3. Quit the game 4. Think, "I just need to be more patient and get through the tutorials" 5. Back to 1.
I specifically couldn't get into this game because I absolutely hated the idea of my attacks being restricted to cards. It's like, can't I just go over there and hit the thing? NOPE fuck you. Shuffle the deck. WELCOME TO CHAIN OF MEMORIES, BITCH!
For me that whole narrative where Sora's memories were being erased and changed hit me a lot harder than everybody else, simply because it was my first Kingdom hearts game. I knew next to nothing about the series my friends were raving about in school, and honestly had no idea what they were talking about when they started talking about summoning Simba. Then one of my friends brought this little gem on the GBA to school and let me have a go, AND I LOVED IT. Thankfully the GBA was one of the few consoles my 11 year old self had, so I got it pretty soon after that. Since I had no background knowledge of Kingdom Hearts at all, when Sora's memories were tampered with I had no idea they were, until it was revealed through the plot and it blew my goddamn mind. That whole journey and introduction to Sora who after all that still chose to save the very person who messed with his memories really made a big impression on me, and I've played every entry since (excluding Days and Coded because they really didn't look that fun). I still haven't played through the original, but the 1.5 + 2.5 collection's about to fix that soon. Also the last Riku replica fight was the 18th ring of hell in boss fight form.
KilroyJenkin5 Chain of Memories was also my first KH game, and I absolutely fell in love with the story. I thought the story and the gameplay were incredible, and it’s still one of my favorite KH games :)
The opening cutscene from the GBA version is a technical masterpiece, seriously impressive that they managed to put it on a GBA and it still looks like a PS2 cutscene.
i think riku's campaign is better simply because you have the knowledge of how it works and then it forces you to have a set deck instead of being able to break the game. and it also feels way more fast paced
Because they actually don't own Tarzan, they mistakenly thought that he was public domain and that lead to legal issues that resulted in them unable to use him in any other properties
Chains of Memories, in my opinion, has one of the best stories in the KH franchise, and the story alone was the only thing that motivated me to keep going and finish this game, because the gameplay was not that good and, if you play this game after Kingdom Hearts, you feel like you are replaying a downgrade version of the same game, until the last levels when the climax of the story begin
GuiasMaurelChile The story is incredible, and I actually love the gameplay. My real problem with the game, however, is the EXTREMELY lackluster Disney world stories. Each time I go back through the game I end up just skipping through those to get to the original story.
Proc of the Dawn Exactly. If it wasn’t for the Disney worlds rehash, this game would’ve probably been one of the deepest games in the franchise (story-wise).
Informal Fallacy Castle Oblivion without the card battle system already happened. It is the entire last half of Re:Coded. You go to the various worlds via cards, like in Chain, but the combat is a much more balanced version of BBS's deck command system.
just so people know The benefit of adding premium cards is that no matter the value of the card, it is worth as much as a 1 to put in your deck. So a 9 Cure might usually be 50 card points to add, but premium makes it 25, meaning you can add more powerful cards, with the drawback that you cannot reload them
they are not worth it imo since if you only level up your CP you'll be able to more than make up for the lack of health or attack power by spamming the best moves in the game, curing and using elixirs to recharge your entire deck
I absolutely love Kingdom Hearts but I could not bear more than an hour of playing this game. It should be a turn based card game. This just doesn't work (for me). I don't understand why you're expected to tactically use your cards while simultaneously running around a 3D plane and looking at the enemies' attacks and their card values. Sure, after like 10 hours of playing I might get used to its bullshit but there's no way I'm suffering through more of the awful combat just to get a few sleights I'll be using in every single normal battle. And this is obviously just my opinion, this fighting mechanic just didn't suit me but I get that other people like it for the exact reasons that I hate it for.
Git gud. Just kidding. From the mid game onwards, you can actually get creative with your sleights and vary your playstyle (unless you choose to cheese with Sonic Rave all day).
Felt the same at first. Almost quit it. Then I took a break and everything was easy and I somehow knew exactly how to play. It's even more intense since it isn't turn based
Another excellent and very fair KH review, Caddy, thank you. I foolishly never realized that the way I was playing was cheesing this game - I had thought that it wanted you to spam powerful Sleights constantly, but that probably was not what they intended. I like all of the dialogue writing in this game way more than the dialogue of any other KH game. It feels the most coherent and interesting here.
I'm really glad you took the time to learn the card system and actually enjoyed it! The battle system is actually why Chain of Memories is one of my favorite KH games (alongside Birth by Sleep and Dream Drop Distance). I agree though, going through each floor through the same rooms over and over gets really old, which is why I usually just throw on TH-cam videos to listen to while I grind my way through floors. Good review, Caddy!
Caddy you explained the catch about Premiums correctly, but the good they do you is that they lower the CP to whatever the CP would be when the value is 1 of that card. SO you can put a bunch of them in your deck, but at the same time it is very very risky
I can see how different Caddy and Johnny have different opinion of the KH series. I find it quite interesting just going back to the same game review, but with different opinions, makes my mind expands the more I hear of them talk.
Don't worry Caddy, for the most part things get a lot less confusing after you play 358/2 Days and Birth By Sleep. It isn't until Dream Drop Distance that things get confusing again, but, even then it should be fine.
Spot on review. I'm glad you played it all the way through, many people give up at the very beginning. I agree, it sort of feels like the whole game breaking thing feels like a reward for the player overcoming the card learning curve. I completed the whole game except for some non-stacking difficulty trophies, I enjoyed this game dispite the flaws it has. Great review! Awesome to see these Caddy reviews on Kingdom Hearts games!
As somebody who severely struggled with this game back when the original released, it's weird hearing him talk about how easily it can be broken in your favor.
I had the game when I was 10, and I loved Premium cards, they are wonderful combo openners : they disappear when you use them but so are the first cards of a combo, so I got like 3 premium clouds and 6 normal ones and spammed Omnislash. Also they cost less card points so it's up to you to use them, but yes it can be a disadvantage...
Christ! I am really glad someone else likes Chain of Memories card system. Everyone I met said they hated it. But I really found it fun for the same reasons caddy says.
I've completed KH 1.5 numerous times. Every time, I get excited to play this game, then terribly annoyed that I have to complete it. Getting all that extra stuff takes DOZENS of hours. Especially getting Riku to 99, because he doesn't have megaflare. So annoying. Really glad that you covered this though. It's such a unique entry in the KH franchise.
I actually grew up with this game as a kid. This is one of the games that introduced me to the RPG genre. My parents were skeptical of me of getting it by saying I might get bored playing it afterwards because it's an RPG. Ironically, they bought me Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario a long time ago and did not know that. And for the same reason why I got those three RPGs is because it had Mario and Disney characters, so mind you I was still a kid back in the day. Today, I have both the original GBA version and the PS4 remake collection.
I'm glad SOMEONE likes Chain of Memories' combat system other than me. I swear whenever I hear someone talk about this game they hate on the card system just because "it's not Kingdom Hearts"
BtheDestroyer I like the cars system, if anything it is real time combat I dont like. Chain of Memories would work better as a turn based card hybrid battle system.
Eh I doubt it. I mean I do enjoy it but the majority of the KH fandom prefers the traditional style of gameplay and i'll admit I do too so I really don't want to see it ever again at least in a mainline KH title. It did return sort of in DDD though with the Flick Rush mini game.
I admit it..i like the gba version over the 3d remake..i just feel the card battle system works better in a 2D enviroment..*is in thr middle of playing rechain of memories myself on the ps4 and has beaten the gba one soo i know its more of personal opinion*
The duel mechanic in Riku's story is basically a "you have to get good at this" if you want to play through on proud mode, but the cheese doesn't stop because I realized there is basically no penalty for not properly matching cards, so I just threw all the cards I had in my deck at the enemy until I matched all the ones I needed to.
I bought Chain of Memories back in the limited GBA SP bundle. Had no idea what the game was, but it was the coolest SP there was and thus I bought it. I loved that game, I spent an immense amount of hours on it, and it took me YEARS to realize that KH was a series. Imagine me losing my shit lol.
I never forget the first time Riku told he could ''smell' the darkness. What does darkness smells like? Shit? Anyway, another great analysis! I'm looking forward to the next one :)
FYI, premium cards make up for this flaw by being much cheaper to put in your deck, meaning you can fit in more cards. also, using a sleight treats the first card you choose like a premium (i.e. removes it from the deck) meaning the best cards to use for this are premium cards, since they vanish anyway.
To those who might be interested in playing this game after seeing this. Do not avoid getting premium cards. Just don't fill your deck with them. They cost less CP to put in your deck. So they are useful and once you get some potions or hi potions you're set.
7:40 Hot take, if a game becomes unplayable because it didn't convay things properly, that is a problem with the game itself. You shouldn't have to do research just to keep yourself from being screwed over. I personally hated the card mechanics, I found it clunky and annoying and I hate having my main attack (and everything else) be of limited use, and juggling card use in real time is an anxiety nightmare for me.
It's good that they made rikus story first and here's why. Rikus campaign reveals how namine is using soras memories and tinkering with them so if they let you play rikus campaign first, soras story will have no mystery and suspense because they reveal everything you learned in soras campaign
I'm pretty sure that premium cards are explained during the tutorial? I'm pretty sure it said that premium cards are a way for you to use higher value cards for less CP but cant be reloaded without an item card.
Is there any other way if the kingdom hearts chain of memories should be on cutscene If we don’t have to play on this game anymore I just want to watch the video scene And just moved to another story
Whoo, if he goes chronologically, Days will be next! CADDY, TRY TO GET THE DS VERSION, PLEASE! The console version is just a movie, and doesn't tell you everything!
If he wants to go through the DS version, power to him. Personally, Days is the only KH game I don't like because the gameplay is just awful. I absolutely love the story, but the missions are just a chore to get through. I feel that the movie is honestly about as good as it could be, especially since they actually went back and added an extra cutscene showing Roxas struggling against the final boss for a bit for a little more emotional payoff.
@@Road_to_Dawn honestly days was one of my favorites, I enjoyed most of the missions (though the emblem collecting ones, the couple where you had to chase an enemy that was constantly flying around the area, and the shadow globs were the bane of my existence each for different reasons)
I just finished this game a week ago on PS4, I'm doing my first run on KH series (currently playing KH2). A couple of points about hits: 1. The gameplay is repetitive as hell, I think in the Sora storyline I had the same experience as you, but I cannot recommend enough to play a little bit, finish the tutorial and then go watch some videos on youtube explaining the sleights and cards mechanics, this made my run much much better. 2. Riku part is excelent, I don't think I heard it in the video, but Riku deck is fixed in every world, meaning that every world has it's own strategies, this was cool since you cannot spam the best slights all the time (as in Sora storyline). For me it was much more tactical and required observation from the Bosses specially. Also, I really recommend to rush to boss rooms and don't waste time on others unless you want to level up a bit 3. Now that I started KH2 I see why a lot of people were confused, it's a must to understand better the KH 2 story. Overall I think the game is a 7 or a 8, but clearly not for everyone to play.
I just happened to be replaying the Kingdom Hearts series at the same time as these videos are going up. Half way through KH1? New Caddy on Kingdom Hearts. Half way through RE: Chain of Memories, well you get the picture.
Really glad to find someone else who doesn't just automatically disregard this game because of the gameplay. While I did like 358/2 Days more personally this is probably my second favorite of the 'side' games. I like how you actually have to think and plan with the combat and how it isn't just press x to win like the first one, I like the five members of the Organization we meet in this game, I love the bosses, I like how the game can be either a cakewalk or infuriating depending on what kind of experience you want, and I like the themes it touches on about the nature of memory. Yeah a lot of the Disney stuff is rehashing the first game but I appreciate that this game is the one where the series started to be judged on its own merits rather than just 'hey look its Disney.'
I agree with all your critisisms of the game, it hasnt aged that well and the transistion to the ps2 didnt do the game many favors. Back in...2003? 2002? when I played it on my gba, I didnt notice how repetative its was, if you play it on the go its not as bad in that regard. but a 6/10 is a bit harsh I think, sure your critsism is on point, but I think a 7/10 is better fitting. just my 2 cents yknow.
Hasn't aged that well?? It's one of the few games from the early 2000's that actually did age well. I've played a lot of games from that time period, and Kingdom Hearts is vastly superior to most of them when it comes to combat/controls and graphics.
this cant be real... i´ve found your channel maybe a year ago , with lot of crash content . yesterday i´ve found your KH series ( wich is my favorite). and now i recommized that your intro is the : Jump and smash to the ground sound von Croc- The legend of gobbos , wich my verry first game was . ahhwww i love your content sooo much
Caddy, are you going to play through 358/2 next since technically it takes place before 2 chronologically? Or are you going to play them in original release order?
Premium Cards had a perk to them that made them Premium. They had a way lower CP Cost than the same card in Non-Premium. So while you couldn't reload them, you could put more of them into your deck.
Wasn't there something special about the enemy cards with Riku? I thought you could use the card of any boss you beat as him instead of having to put them in your deck like sora
I'll be honest I really like the card game aspect of it I thought it was fun and interesting something to change it up. The same thing over and over then again I'm just a mess of sucker for card games I thought it was fun to change my deck build However I'd like using magic or attack it was an interesting concept
I loved the whole game, and played it just for the sake of it lol I liked Sora's personality evolution, it's way more mature and grown up than in KH1 and KH2 or any other
I own both the original gameboy copy as well as the new remake and in both premium cards had a lower equip cost allowing you to have more points for more cards meaning a larger deck and more comboes
Oh you will NOT get to Kingdom Hearts 2 BEFORE ME. I'M ON TO YOU.
But what about the 38 other games you have to talk about before KH2?
You ready to be wrong
Even if he doesn't, he still will beat you to Re:Coded and/Or 368/5 Days. It's just simple math.

In Kingdom Hearts 3, I want to go back to Castle Oblivion _without_ the card system. Maybe have a card-themed limit break, but nothing else.
We'll probably go back there. Ya know, need to wake up Ven n' shit.
Why would you think they would change the battle system if Castle Oblivion becomes a playable world? It's not like recoded did that.
nah they need unique game styles i would love if KH3 had card gameplay world

Luxinox since you lose the first card in the sleight anyway, it makes sense to make the premium cards the first card of every sleight.
Sora is very emotional in this game. It’s really cool to see him get angry and upset, as the other games are just happy go lucky.

I do enjoy it but it IS different and not the traditional style of KH. The story however is absolutely amazing.
BtheDestroyer I like the cars system, if anything it is real time combat I dont like. Chain of Memories would work better as a turn based card hybrid battle system.
I wish they did a new game with this mechanic, they could improve on it a lot
Eh I doubt it. I mean I do enjoy it but the majority of the KH fandom prefers the traditional style of gameplay and i'll admit I do too so I really don't want to see it ever again at least in a mainline KH title. It did return sort of in DDD though with the Flick Rush mini game.
Caddy just playing this series gives me great joy
I play Yu-Gi-Oh, but this game is beyond my understaning
I love seeing the notifications for your new videos, Caddy! Your videos always make my day better! (:
Lethal frame was my favorite sleight during my own playthrough. It was just so satisfying.
I really enjoy the "relax" and honest feel of the Caddy segment.
Chain of memories was my first Kingdom Hearts and I like the organization members in this game
I never forget the first time Riku told he could ''smell' the darkness. What does darkness smells like? Shit? Anyway, another great analysis! I'm looking forward to the next one :)
Caddicarus is gonna finish the Kingdom Hearts marathon before Somecallmejohnny.
(To be fair, Johnny is busy with Platformania and other duties)
FYI, premium cards make up for this flaw by being much cheaper to put in your deck, meaning you can fit in more cards. also, using a sleight treats the first card you choose like a premium (i.e. removes it from the deck) meaning the best cards to use for this are premium cards, since they vanish anyway.
I had a lot of trouble understanding the jargon in his strategy description.😂
G Man It made perfect sense to me, but then again, I have beaten the game 8 times... :p
Chain of Memories is my favorite game, so this review of it makes me happy to see
You know you dont have a life when you're so early on caddy video 😂
It's like caddy is dissing Johnny by uploading more kingdom hearts than him.
Meanwhile Antdude is (insert cricket noises)
Marluxia is prettiest Anime
The meteor card combo was possibly the best way i grinded in this game basicly clears an area
I just finished this game a week ago on PS4, I'm doing my first run on KH series (currently playing KH2). A couple of points about hits:
Also, I really recommend to rush to boss rooms and don't waste time on others unless you want to level up a bit
Yes it is my Birthday today so happy freaking Birthday to me
Really glad to find someone else who doesn't just automatically disregard this game because of the gameplay.
I'm pleasantly surprised to hear you liked this game as much as you did! I was afraid you'd hate it xD
I've played a lot of games from that time period, and Kingdom Hearts is vastly superior to most of them when it comes to combat/controls and graphics.
this cant be real... i´ve found your channel maybe a year ago , with lot of crash content . yesterday i´ve found your KH series ( wich is my favorite). and now i recommized that your intro is the : Jump and smash to the ground sound von Croc- The legend of gobbos , wich my verry first game was . ahhwww i love your content sooo much
I love all these KH reviews Caddy ^__^ Cant wait for 2!
Honestly cannot wait for your video on KH2. Its the best game in the series imo
Already love this review series
I just started playing kindgom hearts 1 when you did the last caddy, and started chain of memories when you started this one.
This is fast, Im not even subscribed to you and it already showed up in my recommendations :D
Caddy's right oogie really likes tackling sally in these games.
Another great review. You're the bomb Cadiccarus
Holy shit I just did the Hades fight on the second floor. With the breaking you suggested it was the easiest fight I've ever had in that game.
This is where my kingdom hearts journey begins
Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memerioes for the GBA was my first kingdom hearts game.
I literally had no idea what premium cards do until now. I still beat Marluxia as a kid, having only 1/4 or less of my entire deck available.
Wow, another episode already?!
If you review the whole series before Johnny VS, I will feel really bad for him.
i really wanna see a caddicarus lets play channel
At this rate, Caddy will definitely beat Johnny at reflecting on the entirety of KH.
This is actually my introduction to the series.
Who else is waiting for kh2 review
Can't wait for you to do Kingdom Hearts II! Will it be next week?
I loved the whole game, and played it just for the sake of it lol I liked Sora's personality evolution, it's way more mature and grown up than in KH1 and KH2 or any other
Damn caddy. You coulda done this in Sunday as it would've been my birthday
Id like to see Caddy do a review of the rest of the Klonoa series
I wonder who will get their Kingdom Hearts 2 review done first? Caddy or Johnny?
I own both the original gameboy copy as well as the new remake and in both premium cards had a lower equip cost allowing you to have more points for more cards meaning a larger deck and more comboes
