  • In "Slippers Meets Flip Flops", Taryl attempts to put an electric starter on this customer's generator. Will it work?? Why won't it? What can you do in order to get it to work? Taryl's gonna go over that in this here video!
    Prior to and after the fix, local customer Flip Flops shows up while shop pest Slippers is there and all heck breaks loose! These 2 do NOT get along and are surely going to end up battling it out. See what happens when one elderly man steps on another's toes in another funny, yet very informative video from your pals at Grass Rats Garage! And as Taryl always says at the end of every video... There's Your Dinner!!

    Don't use a trickle charger on a battery in storage. Use a maintainer. Like a NOCO, Schumacher or any of the many reliable brands. I use one on my Can Am Spyder. Trickle chargers keep a constant charge going to the battery. Maintainers/tenders monitor the state of charge and only send voltage when needed. Cool video.

      I've heard, that some of them will exercise the battery . Drain and replenish it . A battery is just like me, has to keep moving or it won't go at all! Want to get one of those "set it and forget it" chargers.

      Yea I agree but if you dont have a 12v maintainer , you could put the trickle charger on a wall timer for 20 min trickle charge a day to keep the plates clear. You know. That would work

    @8:42 They're called ignition wrenches.
    They are designed to work in tight places around vehicle distributors. The sets usually came with odd sizes like 11/32 and other sizes that you'd never use in a million years.
    With electronic ignitions nowadays they are pretty much obsolete.

    Great video. Thank you. Good news is that by the time a battery goes dead, the gas went bad too and it won’t start anyway. I would run the carb dry, empty the gas and keep a good battery maintainer (not a trickle charger)on a dedicated battery. When the emergency comes, put in gas and start her up.

    Let me just say how much I love your videos. Around the holidays is really tough on me. When I watch your they really do cheer me up.
    I love how you took a subject and turned it into a successful side hustle.
    When you talked about The godfather and the scene with the camera you stole my thunder. I know a lot of people did not realize that that scene was not written into the movie. And just like you said the director saw that and thought it was fantastic and that's why it made its way into the movie.
    That terminal removing kit is a godsend. I've learned about them back in the early 2000. I bought my first Harley-Davidson and I was doing some work adding things to the bike like most Harley owners do. I was adding a seat back that can be removed. The taillight has to be moved and according to the instructions back then it told you that cut the wires since you could not pull the connector through the factory hole.
    Before doing that I ran up to the Harley. I told my friend behind the counter that I wanted to buy a new connector so like did not have to splice wires together. He told me I got something better and walked over to the tool rack and came back with this two pack that look like Chinese throwing Stars. He opened it up and walked over to one of the bikes on the showroom floor and showed me how it works.
    It did its job but that type of told did not last long at all. After the second time having it replaced under warranty I'd looked for a better alternative.
    That's when I came across the ones that you were using today. The ones I have are not as many and as nice as the ones you have. They come on a key-ring and nothing to keep them in there. I love that yours has something to hold them all in.
    If anybody knows where you can find this complete set and could drop a link I would appreciate it.
    I also loved your idea for the battery and starter. I already have more than enough of those connectors that I could do that every machine I own and still have a few left over. When springtime gets here I am definitely going to put this warm a couple of my machines.
    As always I made sure to give you a big ol thumbs up and of course I'm alrighty a subscriber. Look forward to your next video.

    I was kinda thinking along the lines of its a good idea to add electric start, some peeps got bad arms and shoulders and such and manual starts can be a challenge. I would have just put the starter and start button on and then used a jump pack or whatever to jump the thing. As far as being concerned about the charge circuit, its on a generator so maybe that had a 12v DC out. Or you could always just plug a battery charger to the 120v ac out for a couple of minutes. Anyways it was a good tutorial on how to add a charge and start system.

    Great job Taryl! I have a generac Megaforce without an electric start and I would have to do all of what you did to install an electric start. The flywheel with the ring gear is pretty pricey unless I can find it used. For the price that generators sell for these days, at least around here in the Northeast I'm sure the cost of this upgrade would be more than what it would sell for sadly.

    I've been wondering about these and custom fabricating a metal bearing holder to replace the plastic as I've read long term those bearing seats can develop play and cause failure in a system that otherwise can last longer seems if has a more stiffer solid bearing mount seat support part. Neat to know. I was looking at with the Honda/Chonda's retrofitting with electric start and even appears the GC's can be hacked too with GX parts and some know how. For that I was looking into for controlling the motor and starting an air compressor with electronic actuation controls design vs the pneumatic mechanical. Thanks for sharing as always! Rather than installing an alternator on a generator engine, just get a battery maintainer. They will keep it charged without overcharging. $10 at Harbor Freight. Keep it plugged in when not in use so it's ready when you need it. Then you can plug the maintainer straight into the generator while it's running.

  • @toddfry7861
    @toddfry7861 ปีที่แล้ว

    The battery connection is a great idea. Realistically, the customer needs to start the generator monthly and let it run for 30 minutes. Plug something in while it is running. That keeps it energized. Turn the gas off and let the carburetor run dry. It keeps the battery charged and the carburetor in good working order. I just rebuilt the carburetor on my neighbors generator. It had not run in a year or so. It was extremely gummed up. The engine is running well now, but I am now chasing a low voltage problem.

Rather than going through all of the trouble and expense of adding electric start, I just removed the recoil starter and used my cordless electric drill attached to a ratchet adapter and socket that I would attach to the flywheel nut Now I have electric start.

    Thanks a lot, Taryl. Now when I get something running in my shop, I dance around and go "ooooo!" That is all your fault.😉

      Lights is a great idea for a log splitter.

    Great vid Taryl. Do you have to put a plate over the rectangular hole in the blower shroud? Will the hole affect engine cooling?

    Anderson power pole connectors are super for high current 12V DC applications.
    We use them in our Amateur Radio setups....

      I agree that an Anderson connector would be a better choice for this application!

    The trickle charger pigtail on my garden tractor uses a 2 amp fuse since it is designed to be used with a 1.5 amp charger. Something to consider if hooking up a much heavier load of a 12 volt starter.

      In that case, the fuse would need to be on the charger pigtail, or the battery would need a separate pigtail for charging. Small engine starters draw up to 30+ amps.

    Snow boots don't need to come around here because it is hot down here and it will be like that Frank Zappa song " Stink Foot". You make a good small engines instructor.

    My brother got a couple of AEG generators with electric & pull start for a discount & they have a Chinese 4 stroke engines bolted onto them & there's no telling when we would ever use them because we had a big substation built and commissioned in 2013 & the only time that we had a blackout is when a huge storm tore through our area in 2014 which knocked down a lot of power lines & caused the circuit breaker to trip out at the substation.
    We were out of power for 3 days because flood water prevented repair crews from getting access to our area.
    A regulator could've been fitted to the first stator even because a woman who moved away from our area after her husband died gave my dad their Toro Zero turn ride on lawnmower to mow her vacant block until she sold it (we no longer have the mower because she sold it to someone else) which was powered by a Honda GXV530 engine which charging system kept frying the battery so I bought a single phase 4 Amp aftermarket 12 volt motorcycle regulator for it to prevent The alternator from frying the battery & it worked good
