Good video. I have the same kit. No instructions. No invoice. No company name of who or where it came from. Weird. My kit wiring version has the black split . One leg goes to ignition coil for spark. The other runs the new electric switch. I just clipped old switch wire and left it run through original diode for low oil. Also weird was the white wire coded to brown for charging coil. I havent started it yet. Going to buy a new spark plug and wire for charger. I was going to say. A 2 5/8 " hole saw worked . Wouldnt have known that had I not watched your video. Good you mentioned gear line up. And cure in comments. Mine has no wiggle room in bolt holes. Hope it meshes or its drill city.
Fyi if you take a piece of notebook paper and fold it in half, it makes for a good shim to set the gap of the ignition coil to the flywheel. Just loosen the screws with the paper between the coil and the magnet of the flywheel, and let the magnet pull the coil to the flywheel. Tighten the screws and rotate the paper out.
Can you explain in more detail how you aligned the flywheel teeth with the starter teeth? I just had to replace the starter on my Westinghouse generator and it seems the flywheel is getting caught up when trying to press the electric start button. The flywheel began to turn when the button was pressed and then seemed to "seize" up.
Just loosen the starter up and rotate it slightly. There’s a little bit of play in the bolt holes. On mine it wouldn’t spin the engine so I had to rotate it.
Thanks for the video, it helped out a lot. But in my experience. My starter was binding/ seizing up after half turn or so, it was struggling. I struggled for two days trying to find out why my starter was seizing up, and it turned out the jumper cables I was using to test it out wasn’t giving the starter enough juice to crank it all the way. Having an issue after the install. Starts up but now it runs rough and backfires. The choke has to be in a sweet spot and then it wont stay running. Engine is new with 50 hours on it. Seems like a fuel issue. Could this be from incorrect wiring?
@@magicman_metal_fab carb was clean throughout. Gap was set correct and double checked. The flywheel should be the correct one. What do you mean by this?
Is there any differece between Honda and Predator and other copies? I ordered a Simpson 4.4K PSI pressure washer for 1k mullas and it emptied my wallet. The box doesn't say Honda GX390 but it's made by Simpson. Probably a re-branded copy engine. I am worried.
Absolutely. Predator is a solid engine. Honda is a fantastic engine. Everyone has copied a Honda engine, but at the end of the day I would only choose a Honda engine.
So if the only problem you had was alignment of the starter, the solution would be to properly locate that first small hole you drill prior to using the hole saw. That will get the starter motor on the proper centre. How would you propose doing that, in hindsight? I ask in all seriousness, because I have this to do actually myself, once the starter kit arrives.
That wasn’t really an issue. If I had opened up the hole a tad larger which I ended up doing would have been fine. The holes that come from the factory were slightly larger which allowed the starter to rotate. It really wasn’t hard to install and adjust the starter. I would absolutely purchase it again if I needed to. 😊🤙🏻

Absolutely. There a guy on TH-cam that built a 60 mph Honda I think it was with a 420 cc engine.
Is it able to start the enginge with a powerbank instead of a Car battery?
As long as it’s 12 volts. Absolutely
Congratulations for clear info. Thanks from Portugal
Glad it helped
About how long does this take to do remember ots my first time lol but I'm good with my hands
Roughly 2 hours give or take. Probably less bud.
Having an issue after the install. Starts up but now it runs rough and backfires. The choke has to be in a sweet spot and then it wont stay running. Engine is new with 50 hours on it. Seems like a fuel issue. Could this be from incorrect wiring?
No. Probably a clogged carb. If it will run 1/2 choked then that’s your issue. Check gap on ignition coil. Also double check if your flywheel matches.
@@magicman_metal_fab carb was clean throughout. Gap was set correct and double checked. The flywheel should be the correct one. What do you mean by this?
The flywheel was the same size and everything with the factory one
1424 how did you resolve?
Is it possible to install self start kit in gx270 engine of honda
Anything is possible. I have not tried that.
Where do the battery terminals go permanently?
Ground the engine block. Positive to the starter.
Does the starter battery get recharged as the engine is running? also where are you mounting the battery?
Yes the battery would get recharged off the stator coil that is installed provided it’s hooked up properly.
Does this kit include a voltage regulator, so the battery doesn't boil away?
Negative
Is there any differece between Honda and Predator and other copies? I ordered a Simpson 4.4K PSI pressure washer for 1k mullas and it emptied my wallet. The box doesn't say Honda GX390 but it's made by Simpson. Probably a re-branded copy engine. I am worried.
Absolutely. Predator is a solid engine. Honda is a fantastic engine. Everyone has copied a Honda engine, but at the end of the day I would only choose a Honda engine.
I have on/off toggle switch on the side, should I just cut it off and wired it with the kit? Thanks
I would. The kit gives you everything you need to do it correctly bud.
@@magicman_metal_fab That's what I thought. Thanks!
Cool video man, thank you.
@@duresterichard6960 my pleasure bud. 😊🤙🏻
Thanks this saved me days of confusion 😁
My pleasure bud.
I’m installing this kit today, I have taking everything apart. Everything looks like it works fine except for the coil. Where my coil mounts and the coil they gave me in the kit will not lineup to put my screws in,, is it possible that I can you reuse my old coil with this electric start kit? Even though mine was a pull start?
Absolutely. The charging coil not the ignition coil correct?
@@magicman_metal_fab lol that’s what it is. Lol. Got it TY
@@novarestoration9023 awesome bud. If you have any other questions fire away. 😊🤙🏻
OK you asked for it. Lol So what do I do with the on off switch that is on the cover? It’s actually in the way when I mount my key housing. Where did you get that black piece to cover the hole where the on off switch was
@@novarestoration9023 that original switch comes off and the black cover fills the hole. Easy peasy. Keep them coming. 😊🫡
Does it hook up to a batery
Yes sir. It will need a lawn mower battery
What size battery do you need?
Basic lawn mower battery
Nice job. That was very nicely done.
Thanks my dude👍👏. I just came up on the same engine. This Honda is big 😆💪
It’s a fantastic engine. Can’t kill them hondas.
@@magicman_metal_fab question. Can I put this engine on a mini bike or go-kart?
@@fresnobassn744 absolutely brother.
@Magicman metal fab Thanks man🙏
Don't you have a tension wrench?
Negative
Hi Magicman, Its is also possible to GX390 Mega 16HP to install starter like that you do? Thanks....
Yes it should be the same friend.
Can you still use the pull start. will it still work
Yes. It still works bud
Do you reckon it would work in the GXV390?
Not sure bud. Definitely worth a shot
Great video, just ordered a kit, went to remove old flywheel and realized the new flywheel keyway was more to the left. I noticed a comment here that said to remove the teeth and install on old flywheel but that wont fit either. Also no magnets inside the old flywheel to charge. Any insight would be great. I cant find the reason. The new flywheel looks like your keyway. Also i believe my 390 is a 2017 if that helps. Loosing my marbles over it lol

@@magicman_metal_fab thanks for the reply. I figured it out, so previous to 2011 the flywheel keyway was in a different location so timing would be different for my 2017 engine. I contacted the company and they mislabelled the add of coarse my luck. They are sending me the other flywheel, i also noticed some companies are putting both key way slots into the flywheel and you use which one you need. When mine comes in tomorrow i will send you the pictures of it! Thanks for the reply! Great video!
@@andrewm4951 that sounds just like my luck. Lol. I’m glad you got it sorted out bud. Keep me posted on how it goes. 😊
@@andrewm4951 i have same problem. my oem flywheel seems to be on 2 o'clock instead of 1 o'clock and when my kit came in the flywheel is at 1 o'clock. what kit did you use and from what website did you buy it from?
Yes I’m facing this same problem it’s at 2 o’clock
Thinking I’ll just take it to machine shop get the key way cut out
For anyone who's installed such a electric start kit, what happens if the motor locks up due to hydro lock or anything of the sort?
I don’t know why you’re worried about a motor Hydro locking, but if it was the Hydro lock, you would have to pull the spark plug and get rid of all of the water and moisture out of the cylinder
Where is the battery for the starter placed?
You can put the battery where ever you like my friend.
@@magicman_metal_fab I figured that out. What type of battery did you use? Where was it mounted in this video? Thanks
Do you have another link to the kit? Looks like the one in the description is expired. Thanks for the video!
I replaced the link with a different link. Same price I paid for mine. Hope this helps. 🫡🤙🏻
What size battery do I need?
Typical lawn mower battery is fine
Awesome Video. The eBay link says the Electronic Starter Kit is for GX390 year 2011 or older.... does this "older" mean pre-2011 or post-2011? I'm assuming it means 2010 and before?
Yes. Correct
@@magicman_metal_fabjust wondering if this type of kit will work on newer engines....post 2011? Tempted to buy one and see if it'll fit on the engine I bought earlier in the year.
Has anyone done this on a newer, post 2011 engine?
good thought we the loctite....I'm hoping to do the same with a G400.
Thanks bud. 😊🤙🏻
Is it positive or negative ground?
Negative ground.
Only Works on diesel motor?
No gas only
Thank you, brother. You certainly are very knowledgeable.
🫡🤙🏻🫶🏻
So how did you align? Adjust teeth on plate? Or starter positioning? Been wanting to add a turn key soon..... thanks for vid 🤙
Just loosen the starter bolts and slightly rotate the starter. After a few tries I was able to get it to work. Pretty easy bud. 😊
Excellent video. Just going to install my kit now
Sweet. Thank you 🫡🤙🏻
@@magicman_metal_fab yep the starter all worked out really well
I'm buying a used Honda GX390 that has an electric starter on it. How can I remove it.
Just take the starter off and nothing else bud.
This video helped me tremendously. I thank you sir.
I’m glad it did bud. 🫡🤙🏻
Great explanation and tutorial...thanks man 👍
Absolutely brother. My pleasure
how did your flywheel come off so easy 😰. the nut is a wrist breaker on mine
Use an impact on the nut. Maybe a little bit of heat. 🤙🏻🫡
@@magicman_metal_fabi had the wife lock the wheel up with a pry bar and used some leverage and muscle. thanks for the video by the way.
What year model is your engine???
I believe early 2000s
Good job. I did have to go back and play it in steps to see the charging wire magickly appear in place @frame 9:22. Also, to get how you aligned the starter to stop it from binding (not like a chevy with starter shims) Golf Cart mod to gas? Looking forward to finding this video.
I appreciate you brother. Thank you. 🫡🤙🏻
Can this work on DeWalt
Not sure bud.
