  • In "Mower Shield", Taryl goes over what it takes to get this old 1946 brush cutter working like new again. Taryl tackles his first Clinton engine in this video as well. Prior to and after the fix, local con artist extraordinaire, Ronnie, is at it again with a new scheme called "Mower Shield". Unfortunately for him he scams the wrong customer in another hilarious yet informative how-to video from your pals at Grass Rats Garage! And as always, There's Your Dinner!!

At 18:16 you will see the name Tillotson on the the fuel bowl. They started making carbatraitors in 1914 in Toledo Ohio. The carb is probably a Tillotson as well. Yesterday I ordered a diaphram kit for my 1977 Homelit XL, fitted with a Tillotson carb. I think I've seen it on a Tecumseh powered single stage snow trower too.

Nice job Taryl. Really enjoy seeing the older equipment repaired and doing what it was intended to do. Now days, that same brush cutter would have a 15 or 20 HP motor, electric start, safety switch's, guards, self propelled, maybe even have blue tooth. Price tag in 2020 $2,199.99 and it wouldn't any better of a job than that old one.

Another fun Taryl video. Re: the resin in the air filter, it does use formaldehyde as a curing agent, but the 'phe' is just part of 'phenolic'. A friend of mine developed a lot of those old resins back in the forties when no one had heard of plastic. Polymer chemistry was just a baby back then.

I cut my mechanic's teeth on a similar Clinton engine I pulled out of a junked Troy Bilt? tiller when I was about 10 years old. No spark plug in the head and the engine was stuck, but at least it was at TDC. With my Dad's help, some heat and liquid wrench, we got it turning. Cleaned everything up, lapped the valves, and learned why not to grab the spark plug wire while turning the engine over. Made a fuel tank from a juice can and gaskets out of cardboard. Somehow we got it going but the crankshaft was bent, and the cardboard head gasket burned through in about 20 minutes, but it was a fun experience.

    • @endlessnameless8181
      @endlessnameless8181 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Very heartwarming story you shared there my friend. Love it! Haha I used cardboard for gaskets many a times. Hell, my uncle used to do it all the time when working on cars. He would use beer or soda boxes. He had some tar based liquid concoction he would whip up and soaked em in it then let em dry and slapped that shot back together. Worked every time, it would last too because I never seen him doing any over.

A lot of small business made these, we had one called a Tommy wes, a local two guys made them for our area. The bottom plate was 1/4" concave steel plate about 6" round was part of the blade shaft with a nut welded to it. Ours had a briggs with pull rope on it, also the frame going to the blade was 2 pieces of angle iron on it. I will try to find a picture to email you. Back in the day, you had to have common sense, no using it with a iphone in your hand lol, great video like always.

We had a Clinton engine on a Jacobsen edger. Our engine was probably the next generation model with an oil bath air filter mounted above the carburetor. We had an original pull rope and the handle was tapered smaller on each end and was overall shorter than the one you have.. I don't remember a plaque but it did have the arrowhead on the gas tank like yours. It did have a kill tab attached under one of the head bolts. The edger cut the finest line because its blade consisted of a disk with 5 razor sharp sickle blades that were attached to the disc where they could rotate around the mounting bolt. It cut so finely that I could sign my name with that edger. Of course, it worked so well that it was deemed a safety hazard and quickly discontinued.

My grandfather bought a Yazoo push mower around 1966 or 1967 to have his grandsons use around the house and farm. It had a Clinton cast iron horizontal shaft twin pulley engine. The blade was close to 1/4" thick. The bicycle rear tires and plastic front wheels made it fairly easy for even a preteen to push through briars, broom sage, and tall weeds. Yeah, like that mower, it made me tough!

Hey Taryl ,. I was watching your 1946 brush cutter video .
I Have an excellent tip for you .
on those old glass bowl fuel filters , you can use a Buick Thermostat gasket for about a 1996 and newer 3.8 litre / 3800 engine ,
they are rubber and have a groove that you can fit the fuel screen in ,
and they only cost about $2. at most Auto parts stores .
they often fit better than trying to use a regular round o ring .
Thank you for your videos ,
    Tim from Wisconsin.

I have to hand it to Taryl. I watched his video on a Tecumseh carb rebuild and was finally, after 5 years, able to get an my edger to start with out using a power drill on the flywheel nut.

I bought mower shield for my snow blower and had zero problems with the blower this summer. Well worth the money.

Taryl & GrassRats From Mark. I have a Yazoo S-24 walk-behind that has more than a few similarities to the walk-behind mower in your video.
The original engine on my Yazoo S-24 was a Tecumseh 5hp Horizontal Shaft in which I believe was based upon the Clinton Engine. The engine on my mower had the double pulley type centrifugal clutch with the same exact belt twisting which helps the hard cranking that you encountered in your video presentation.
Some time ago, I purchased one of the 6.5hp Predator Engines to replace the Tecumseh. I’m needing a source for the double belt pulley centrifugal clutch to go on my Predator Engine due to the fact that the original centrifugal clutch fell apart when we were trying to remove it from the crankshaft.
Unlike the mower deck that you were working with; Yazoo has slots where the engine is mounted to slide the engine back and forth for setting belt tension. With the Predator Engine, I will have to make new slots due to the difference between the width of the two engines. At least with the mower in the video, A person could possibly fabricate a new mower deck with modern spindles and the blade. The slide mounts would be very easy to replicate. Thanks for the great video, Taryl. Best Regards From Central KY.

My dad had an old hi wheel Murry, belt drive with an open front. Cut stuff over 6 feet high. Old 'L' head Briggs rope start. Modac V-belt. Those were the days I mowed and couldn't start it. Now I could start it and can't hardly mow!
