Thank you so much for this video. I want to move to Japan (from the UK) in a few years and I have a cat. It's reassuring that they can go in the cabin with you.
Thank you so much for this video! I am flying to Okinawa in April of 2019! I am just now starting the process, hopefully finishing in a few months so I have the 180 days of quarantine served before we move! I appreciate so much knowing the process you went through. I had downloaded all the forms from the Japanese site, and so glad I went back to recheck if they had updated any forms, they had. The last forms were March of 2017, new updated forms were from April 2018. Glad I checked, I now have all updated forms. Lily is so precious! We too will have our dog in the cabin with us!
United allows in cabin??? Omg that’s great to know! Thank you! We plan to move to Japan next summer (I’m apply for jobs now). I am from Hawaii, so I am from a designated area🤪 for those wondering what’s the difference, the designated areas are countries (or designated secluded territories) that are officially “rabies free”. Hawaii and Guam are rabies free places. All animals incoming to the islands have to be quarantined 180 days. However, if you are leaving the islands and moving to Japan (and your pet was born on the islands and has never left) there is NO quarantine. We must contact the Japanese government 40 days in advance of the flight and get the health certificate.
This video was fantastic! I am moving to Tokyo from NY in two weeks with my dog and my nerves and anxiety are going through the roof. I hope to run into you guys sometime at the Yoyogi dog run, that's where our house is so I will be a frequent visitor. :) Wish us luck!
The thought of leaving my furnaces in some scary quarrintine office for 6 months was a lot. But knowing that if you do all of it before you dont have to do that is so much nicer.
I'm a double major in Linguistics and Japanese and I have a Shiba Inu I'm going to bring with me once I graduate and find work in Japan. This was incredibly helpful, thank you soooooo much!! Also, do you live in a large city like Tokyo or Osaka? and does that effect availability with pet friendly apartments? A lot of available job positions I'm interested in are in Osaka and I was concerned about finding a pet friendly place in such a populated environment.
I brought my dog with me to Japan from the US in January.. because I'm a grownup who lives alone, I brought my dog with me when I moved. I also found the MAFF people to be super helpful and nice. I had to quarantine my dog for two days at Narita because of bad timing - I would suggest avoiding this if you possibly can. My dog was fine, but it's a huge pain in the ass because the quarantine people operate separately from the inspection people AND require a guarantor in Japan. (also I heard the cat quarantine at Narita is often full) Also, If you live in Los Angeles, you HAVE to go to the USDA office waaaay before they open, because they are incredibly slow and only service a few people a day. I found that only United allows in-cabin pets from the US. My dog would not use the restroom on the wee wee pads in the airplane restroom even though I tried to convince him, and as such he had an accident inside his carrying bag while waiting for the quarantine people - I couldn't find any pet relief areas inside Narita before customs. :( Good luck to everyone moving their pets - as long as you follow the directions and give yourself plenty of time, you'll be fine!
Thank-you for posting this video (and the "full video"), as I also found the same minor discrepancies in the posted process. Seeing this video is very reassuring. I'm in the process of moving to Tokyo next year with my yorkie. She recently had her FAVN blood draw and the results just came back clearing her with more than adequate antibody levels. I was able to find a vet that handles the necessary procedures and paperwork for Japan, and other foreign countries (as well as Hawaii and Guam). However, just as I was settling in for the 6 month waiting period, my mom in Hawaii requested that I stop there before heading to Japan. Hawaii only requires a 4 month quarantine waiting period, but the greatest advantage of taking my dog to Hawaii first is that it's a "designated area" for Japanese quarantine, so the entry requirements for pets to Japan is a little easier. The other major advantage is that the flight from Honolulu is only 8 and 1/2 hours instead of 12 hours from Los Angeles, which would make it a little easier for my dog. The information you provided after immediately arriving in Narita helped to fill in some of the "gaps", though I will need to train my litter-box trained yorkie to relieve herself outdoor. I'm also grateful for your gym video, which was another significant concern. Perhaps we'll run into each other in Tokyo someday.....just look out for a very spoiled 6 lb. yorkie. Thanks again.
This is soooo informative. I was told horror stories about quarantine being that the country where you end up keeps your pet in a cage at the airport for months... I thought it was the most inhumaine thing, like a jail for pets. I thought I could never do such a horrible thing to my cat- just lock her up in a tiny cage with strangers feeding her once a day and that's it... I am sooo relieved by this video. THANK YOU
waah thank you for this. i'm planning on language school then grad school after that, and the thought of leaving my cat forever if i get a job in japan after school is killing meeeee ): but its nice to see this, bc i was so nervous about the process even tho its possibly years away.
So cute!! It's awesome that Lily has such a great personality because I know my dog wouldn't like flying, he's such a wimp! I love watching your videos btw! Do you know what the process is like if you move back to the US, or is that not in the cards in the near future? Are you planning on bringing her back with you for vacations to see family or will she be in Japan with a pet sitter?
Hi!! Thank you for this video! I'm doing the migration process for my dog now and we estimated that we can bring him to Japan by February 2024. Do you know if dogs are allowed in shinkansen? I will live in Osaka but I wanna fly my dog in cabin and there are no flight from my country that allows in cabin to Osaka so we have to fly him to Tokyo then take the shinkansen. My dog is a small shih tzu. Hope to hear from you! Thank you!!
What about the landlord situations? I keep hearing because of "strict pet housing policies in Japan" that it's impossible to bring your pet there. Could you share your experience on that?
Does your dog act any differently now that you’re in Japan? I imagine that all the sounds, smells, etc. would be so different from America, so it would probably be strange for a dog to suddenly move like that.
Hahah yeah! There are certain foods she goes CRAZY for. It used to be pizza crust and now its just plain, white rice. She stands in the kitchen and stares you down whenever it starts steaming. Also, she now will only eat all of her dog food if there are little (whole) fishies in it
So I am hoping to take my cat to Japan within the next year two. My boyfriend also wants to move to Japan, but we are probably going to do so separately so we have higher chances with different programs. Does it have to be the owner taking the pet? Like if I like first, could he bring the cat?
So when you get to Japan, do they ask you for all the paperwork and quarantine stuff you did in the US? You said they just looked at her quick and said she’s good to go so I’m wondering what is the entire process with the titer test and quarantine for if they don’t even ask for it once you get to Japan?
At least in the US you can't leave without it. They barely looked but they also basically pre-approved the forms online the day before we got there. I would definitely stay in email contact with them.
Thank you for this video! Even though I don’t see myself moving to Japan anytime soon, these tips can still be applicable to other situations. And...I also have to ask. Loretta, if those are pugs on your shirt, where did you get it!? I love pugs and that shirt is perfect. ~^.^~
Hi! I am planning to bring my dog from US to Japan as well. When I am trying to book a flight with united, it does not let me and gives me a error when I click that I have a pet with me, I did read something about 12 hour flight limit for dogs. Did you have this problem as well? How long were your flight?
Thank you! and if you dont mind me asking one more question. On MAFF website, it states that it requires 2 rabies shot and get tested for rabies after the second shot. My pup had her rabies shots already, first one in 2020 and 2nd one in 2021 and it is still active until 2024. Does she still needs to get 2 more shots to get tested? or can she go straight into rabies testing? Not too sure what was your situation with your pup when you brought him over> thank you again!
@@japan_nick I can't remember exactly but we had a slightly similar situation where the first shot was fine and then we re-did the second shot and chip implantation on the same day. 🤔 You'll have to read about it in the .pdf guidelines but our vet was familiar with it and helped us speed up the process...
Do you know anyone who's transported a non domestic animal to Japan? If I were to move then I have reptiles which would need to come with me lol. It's so hard to find anything informative on them, but I know Japan has an annual reptile show so they do keep them!
Ah I'm applying for mext and if I am successful I want to bring my dog as well! Did you find that there was a drastic price difference in rent between pet friendly apartments vs non pet friendly apartments?
0:28 Hears the word "quarantine" and has a Corona panic attack. XD If I ever know someone who is moving to Japan with their pet I'm making that pet a passport just to mess with the people who do the first "inspection" at the airport.
We used Dr. Michael Weltz from the Astoria Veterinary group. Its a bit of a trek but hes VERY familiar with the USA →JAPAN export process and generally an amazing vet. We felt very relieved after working with him.
I heard not just anyone can move to Japan and live there with a reason or a job set for them such as a teacher ..... is that true? Do you know anything about that?
Boomer: for just the carry case, vet visits and pet-ticket on the plane, about $1,000ish. If you include the cost of direct flight (versus cheap, indirect), seat upgrades and more, closer to $2,000+
