I was so stoked that I shopped all over town but eventually settled on a new, 1998 dark red Toyota T100 with a 6 cylinder engine. I put over 125,000 miles on that truck during the 7 years I owned it going back and forth from high school and college. The engine was bulletproof and I only ever had 2 problems: the brake cable needed adjusting once because it got too loose and the heater had to be replaced because it sounded like a flock of pigeons going crazy in the glove box when I turned on the heat. Only $600 of repairs in 7 years for a truck that I averaged driving 50 miles per DAY? Not too shabby. Very often, people would randomly ask me if I was interested in selling it and finally, when I put a for sale sign on it, it sold within a week for $7000. Best truck EVER. I still have the truck and it has almost 444,000 miles on it. I have gone through 3 clutches and 2 plastic radiators (my next radiator is aluminum and sitting in the garage). Only 2 parts have failed on this truck, the harmonic balancer early on and the shifter fork (manual transmission) broke about 6 months ago. I may just get a rebuilt engine and keep the truck since all of the modern trucks are either way too big or way too expensive.

My 95 T100 is used daily for my carpentry/home renovation biz. Owned since '14 and still runs amazing! Now has 561K with original engine and 5spd box. Meanwhile I'll continue to rack up another couple hundred thousand K's of mostly trouble free driving, all while being able do all my own servicing and maintenance due to the true simplicity of this truck's design..
Adam, I'm curious to know how often you change oil. I have a 1995 Toyota pickup (not T100), with 252,000 miles, original engine, but it's already had two timing chain change outs and two transmission rebuilds. Automatic transmission

I had that engine in my 97 4runnet, it was an incredible engine and mine had 300k and ran perfect and burned no oil..but man, that gas mileage was horrendous!

I bought a 2021 Tundra 4 months ago with only, 9000 miles on it, knowing the newer V6 Tundras would be a disappointment. I hope to keep this truck for the next 25 years!
Scotty: You will like this story: About 30 years ago my kid bought one of these Toyota trucks with a 6-cylinder engine here in Oregon He loved the truck and took extremely good care of it. The Toyota dealership here in Beaverton, Oregon sold him the truck and promised him FREE OIL CHANGES. They never expected this. He still owns the truck and they have been changing the oil for about 31 years! He had just bought the truck after he graduated from X-Ray Tech school. He kept with it. He was promoted to MRI where he learned a lot and did brain surgery, complicated MRI heart scans, etc. Well, he retired as a millionaire and moved out of town. Unfortunately, he does not get free oil changes anymore!

Scotty on top form with yet another very enjoyable and informative video. Wow that Toyota is in amazing condition for a 1996. It is my understanding that Scotty and the Car Care Nut have gone on record saying the 1990s were the golden years for Toyota build quality.
Well in all due respect, the first tundra looked exactly like the outgoing F-150 of the time. The grill opened up at the top where the F-150s opened down. Even the steering wheels looked the same. The Tundra V-8s did have issues, several guys I work with bought them the deal is Toyota doesn't acknowledge their issues when they don't want to.
@@farticlesofconflatulation oh no they looked very much alike. Like the 94 Taurus vs the 97 Camry or the 1993 Mazda RX-7 vs the 96 supra (replace the pop up headlamps). Toyota had always stolen design language... While not legally reprehensible it's obvious.
@@benygh911 Possibly but where does that come from? Had a Prius that got well than below the ranked gas mileage. Had a Tundra that just lost power and wouldn't run, was stalling out. Must have been me. Cause Toyota don't make mistakes.

I had a V6 T100 and it was a very dependable truck. But it was gutless and had no power compared to the V6 in my 2010 Tacoma and less fuel economy than the Tacoma too. The Tacoma also has more room and is a lot more comfortable.
Tacoma that you are talking about is 20 years difference. Also your Tacoma was made in Mexico. T100 was made in Japan. No compassion in quality production skilled labor that is possible by Japanese only. Go look at the recalls and problems tacoma had and then go look at a T100? None.
You forget about the cronic cylinder head and head gasket issues with the early v6. I wouldn't own one. I will still with my 4 cylinder. They run forever..
Pretty sure that was the 3.0. The 3.4 was bulletproof. Back when I had an ‘01 4Runner, there were tons of guys on the forums that had well over 500k on their 3.4s.
When towing there is no replacement for displacement. That is why an semi's have 400-500 hp and 1400 ftlbs of torque. Displacement makes torque at low rpm.
I had a 1995 T-100. They recalled it at 70k and replaced the head gaskets free of charge no questions asked. Good vehicle but the dealerships in the Memphis area are the worst of any car company
that's how I test all my steel before I do any welding, i tap on it with my knuckles, if it's hard, then I know it's really good steel.... that's what I do when I go buy a car, i crawl underneath it and I tap on the frame if it's hard, then I know it's a good reliable car just like if a tailgate has cupholders and stuff I know it's a good reliable car or like when a car salesman tells me it's a good reliable car, boy then I am rest assured that it's a good reliable car.

Too bad fenders are not made with hard and yet flexi-plastic with a steal roll bar or frame for rigidity. This way when you scratch it off-roading, you can replace them for cheap. And you can customize with different paint schemes like in Jurassic Park. Or make it flare out for bigger tires.

Actually, if a number is associated in the mind of the public with a certain product, it can be viewed as property and protected. It is a tough hurdle but it does exist. One might say that 150 as a truck is associated with Ford. 501 is Levi’s. 45 Colt. 57 Heinz, 747 etc Boeing. 5 Channel. Even 8675309 is copyrighted . They were within their rights to ask a court to determine if they have rights to it. Law suits are how we peacefully resolve disagreements.
The T100 is barely larger than the current Ford Ranger. I like these because they are not the full-size behemoths that are marketed as pick-ups today. Even the Tundra, while the nicest looking of all the big trucks, is too large. About GM's multi-function tail gate...it's the only part of the truck that's worth anything.

I love my ‘96 T100, a couple bumps and scratches but I don’t mind that. Only thing I’m concerned about is my engine leaks! I need to rebuild it with new seals and gaskets soon. 230k on mine! 🥳
I think ford should be sued for just existing.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Be careful what you wish for...
@Jake Google Karl Benz.
With that Woke ghey Ford Raptor I think they killed the company themselves.
I think Toyota should be sued too! I bought a used Toyota Tacoma with low miles. Well this particular model is a 3.4 automatic 4x2 5 lug? Just try and find rear wheel axles! Impossible unless you search the entire USA salvages yards!!!!!!!!!!! If it were a six lug my life would have been great!!
I had a '78 T100 2.0L it lasted forever, less the body. Bull low 1st gear was nice in parking lots and plowed fields
My 95 T100 is used daily for my carpentry/home renovation biz. Owned since '14 and still runs amazing! Now has 561K with original engine and 5spd box. Load it up full of heavy lumber and tools on the daily. Not a rust bucket at all and I always get a kick out of seeing the classic morons in their new domestic trucks passing me on the freeway, knowing very well who will have the last laugh when they get stuck with a $10K bill for a new transmission in 5 years, or 15K for a new engine 😂.
I feel the same with my 03 tundra V8 4x4 a lil over 410,000 miles. Iv modified it to my liking with touchscreen GPS and lift kit and all that. But powertrain is all original.I do mobile mechanic service and I have to get into snowy rough terrain sometimes so I need the ground clearance. I haul 600+ lbs of tools everyday on 35s. I get 12mpg with tools in bed 17 mpg without them.
I had that engine in my 97 4runnet, it was an incredible engine and mine had 300k and ran perfect and burned no oil..but man, that gas mileage was horrendous!
I have a 97 4Runner Limited 3.4L and yes! It’s a gas hog too. I love my 4Runner a lot. In the process of fixing the frame with Safe-T-Cap frame kit at the shop
I bought a 2021 Tundra 4 months ago with only, 9000 miles on it, knowing the newer V6 Tundras would be a disappointment. I hope to keep this truck for the next 25 years!
or 50 years.
Toyota was the one who started to make mid size pick ups bigger.with the second gen tocomas tundras.
Unfortunately, he does not get free oil changes anymore!
lmao your son rules.
One reason he became millionaire is he wasn't constantly buying a newer vehicle every few years. Good for him!
@@davidlindgren7605 It's amazing how quickly the dollars pile up when you don't waste your money on new vehicles all the time.
@@harrymills2770 not having to pay for oil changes, also helped. :)
@@davidlindgren7605 Spot on..
My friends at work called me cheap driving a 02 til this day.
They bought new trucks every year...Now , I am retired with a small nest egg of money I saved, not buying stuff every year. BTW...all of them still working...I WONDER WHY??
LOL....
have a 97 t100 around 120,000 miles still runs great. only had to change starter.
Scotty...as always ...you are spot on.
I owned a 85 4runner, sold it for a 02 4runner 6 bagger 4WD...for towing my boat.
BEST VEHICLES ...for dependability and longevity!!
I plan to keep my 02, the only thing I do not get real great mileage.
Thanks Scotty ....
The biggest drawback, hands down. Especially since 95% are grocery getters
Scotty - can you make a video on the upcoming Toyota Stout. I’m curious on your take on this hybrid pick up. Thanks!
I always wondered where they came from. I have towed many T100s to the dealership in Marietta.
My brother bought a T100 new. It was a piece of crap, Stayed in the shop at the dealer. One time he was at my house and opened the door and the door gasket fell off. He sold it.
I got a 95 t100 with the 4 cylinder with 212k miles still runs great, just towed my car with it 50 miles had no problem.
All Tundra were built in Princeton, Indiana’s new truck plant from 1998 to 2006. San Antonio, Texas began production of the Tundra in 2006 and continues today.
Tundra wasn’t made in 98 it was made in 99 as a 2000 model year I would know I purchased a new 2000 tundra .
I've got the same 5VZ-FE engine in my 3rd gen Toyota 4Runner. Bought the vehicle with 232K on the clock without sweat, right now it's at 273K and is running like a top! To 300K and beyond!!!!
As long as rust doesn't stop you
Sold by 93 Silverado ex cab with 285 ,000 , on its' 3rd auto trans, 2nd stater 2nd alt, had one bad head gasket, oil field truck, well used and abused, sold for $2,000 guy who bought rebuilt the engineer 325,000, still at him he still loves his 350ci. Just had the South Texas truck repainted and new headlights. New Toyota is after this late mdl chevy I got now.
At 7:19 when Scotty started the truck there was some electrical sparking or arcing along the firewall and line!
Nope…dust blowing around in the engine compartment.
Look up the Fifth Gear video on the Toyota truck engine that just wouldn’t quit lol.
I have a 2019 Tundra - I love it, and yeah it has the V8. Gas mileage isn't very good, but I figure I'll get 400K miles out of it minimum.
I have a 96 with the V6 also, love my truck!
i got one of these years ago, it was the perfect size, but found out the frame was rotting,..taught me how to look for rust on used old cars, sadly most are super rusty by me.
Scotty on top form with yet another very enjoyable and informative video. Wow that Toyota is in amazing condition for a 1996. It is my understanding that Scotty and the Car Care Nut have gone on record saying the 1990s were the golden years for Toyota build quality.
Those aren't original panels
@@Tallnerdyguy good point you make there. Thanks for your reply.
They started building T100 in 1993 I know cause I owned one power of a 4cyl and the milage of a 8cyl Toyota warranty is amazing
The DEALERS you mean..?
They look nothing alike except for the basic truck shape common in the 90’s.
They're human Indeed, they WILL make mistakes my Friend, as ALL others, (some make more than others, and there's Malicious intent too)
😌
GreeTs and GOD ✝️ bless you ALL
He owned a Ford turbo 6 150. No tow ran decent mileage but towing, pulled great but no mileage.
Those T100 were great dependable trucks.
Thanks for the great video! Like seeing those old pre-Tacoma models still running great!
scams scam scammers use japan nissan atima and mazda trucks
I got a 2015 Toyota sequoia platinum and I love it. Coming from a Chrysler Aspen
MY 2007 Tundra is 2-0, It took out a Mitsubishi lancer that rear ended me & a cavalier. its still rolling down the road just a new bumper
i had an '81 Toyota pick up, 2wd, had to junk it in '93, the frame rusted in half- 160k on it, even the lower body panels dropped off because of rust
I love my 1991 Toyota 4x4 truck.
Had two T100s back in the day. Both great trucks!
I have a 96 t100 with 180k. Great truck only issue with them really is timing belts every 60-100k
Hard to find those old trucks. People don't want to let them go.
I had a V6 T100 and it was a very dependable truck. But it was gutless and had no power compared to the V6 in my 2010 Tacoma and less fuel economy than the Tacoma too. The Tacoma also has more room and is a lot more comfortable.
Some things just get better over time I have a 97 Tacoma V6 4X4 it still runs amazing and i have the 5 speed in it
Tacoma that you are talking about is 20 years difference.
That's why Toyota improved the v6 engine in 1995 for the T100
I have a green 97 T100 with a manual and 4wd. It has 185k miles and gets 19-20 mpg.
When towing there is no replacement for displacement. That is why an semi's have 400-500 hp and 1400 ftlbs of torque. Displacement makes torque at low rpm.
I miss my t100 i got into a crash .. i got a another long bed t100 and it started to overheat on me lucky it wasnt the headgaskets
Please review the 4.6L Triton V8. from the 2008 F-150. I have one with 238k miles and still going strong.
Sorry Scotty Toyota in Indiana was not a Toyota fork truck plant converted to make Toyota trucks . Built from ground up as a new plant. I live in Evansville Indiana just south of their plant.
The Tundra & F150 looked very similar back then.
I was owner of a Toyota pickup small truck model 1994 R22 engine manual transmission 5 speed this truck never ever ever fails I drive truck for hundreds of thausand of miles summer winter raining not matter what's till i get tired i donate truck to children w cancer but till today i remember that truck very loyalty i never forget the truck not matter what's bcz with the truck start my bussines working day and night now i own many cargo new vans and many properties
Scotty they sold them to other markets too.
In South Africa these were called Toyota Hilux Extra Cab (3.4L V6 4WD)
that same engine, the 5VZ-FE was one of the best engines made by Toyota and was used in other vehicles of theirs too, like Land Cruiser Prado, 4Runner, Tacoma and even Russian companies like GAZ-3111 Volga
My brother had one of these things, ran like a champ but always had some kind of electrical issue.
Probably got flooded
That's how my ford explorer is it runs really strong But i'm constantly having electrical issues. Like the front passenger window not rolling down. Other than that it really has been a really good vehicle
@@beefnacos6258 ya those 90 explorers were reliable. I had one and it’s probably still truckin somewhere. All the cosmetics were always breaking though. Door handles breaking, panels falling off , mirror dangling, but it still started up. Same with those rangers, underrated truck.
My 84 turned 403000.0 miles yesterday,my 79 has 3 mill.
I went through a Toyota Aporentixeship Program.
We were told to stay away from T100.
T100 was built on the small truck frame and suspension
Supposedly
Plus they were a doggy..
My ex girlfriend friend has her T100 for the last 27 years..
She has family in Roseville Toyota.
I used to have a t100 96 with the 3.4 engine and ir was a great truck had it for 3 years and i sell it with 300k on it it was runing perfectly fine i want it back now 😭😭
could you coat your frame with flex seal to crudely rubberize your frame?
Worst thing to do. Moisture that is under or gets under undercoating will destroy you car.. They have oils that you spray on your underframe. It will last years longer if you do so..
What years of Tacoma have that issue with rust from the poor coating used?
All Toyota trucks always rust. The vaunted Pickup in the 80’s all rusted away too.

Here near Chicago I cannot recall the last time I saw a Toyota truck rusting out. Every other truck, yeah.
Hey Scotty. The XTool A30M works great on my 2006 Matrix. I can activate evap valves, fuel pump, security light, etc. Reads all modules.
I'VE been saying that for a long time, and it's CHEAP
Even though Ford had F100? Great engine! After owning a 2008 Tundra and 2015 Sequoia with the 5.7L I'll never buy a newer twin turbo v6 one.
My 2011 scion TCs engine is iffy with a little less than 60 thousand miles, it seems down on power at times and has issues with idling to low, it's always idle hunting, but it still starts so idk
Love my 2015 double cab 5.7 with 8 ft bed.
Had a '87, '96 and a 1999 Tacoma TRD v6 5 speed.
That 3400 was put in the 4rummer too after 1998
No it was put in in 1996 + on 4Runner and Tacoma also
Those rascals at Dodge made D100's and 150's as well. 🤠
Too bad fenders are not made with hard and yet flexi-plastic with a steal roll bar or frame for rigidity. This way when you scratch it off-roading, you can replace them for cheap. And you can customize with different paint schemes like in Jurassic Park. Or make it flare out for bigger tires.
Wow that is a clean T100 clean
I owned a two tone '96 V6 4WD extra cab SR5 T100 that I sold in 2004 when it had about 300,000 miles. Fantastic go anywhere truck... I did replace the AC compressor, the drag link and flex plate while I had it, and I still see it driving around town today... I would try and buy it back from the guy if he ever decides to sell it. I replaced that T100 with a 2002 4WD V8 SR5 Tundra regular cab long bed, and it is also an excellent go anywhere Toyota truck.
Yeah I purchased my sister’s ‘97 T100 with 196k miles for … wait for it… $800!! A/C blows cold, runs like a top. It’s at the body shop now being painted matte blue. It does need new carpet, but that’s inexpensive and up next. FORD??? I don’t think so. My 2010 Tacoma has 201k.
Think about it … an eight v a turbo six or four? How many more revs of the engine will occur to do the same work ?
Scotty mentioned it one more time that most of cars have issues with automatic or CVT. And with manual, they last a long time. Go with manual.
Seen people use re-bars on the older Nissan/Datsun pickups but with enough elbow grease re-bar still bends alot
I'm not American but I remember a precedent set where numbers can't be trademarks (the trial involved Intel's line of CPUs).
I have a pristine '94 Corolla wagon... I hope it stays the distance.
Those are 💎 💎 💎
that startup sound is awesome
I maybe wrong and maybe that’s just how they built the frame but it looks like someone patched the frame on that truck with a couple pieces of angle iron
And the (rust on the frame) has been sprayed over with.....something.
T100 were amazing .
As were the B2200 from mazda/nissan
Can’t beat the quality beat ‘‘em in court.
Great ! That was a review of a 17 year old truck that had an off the frame restoration. How about reviewing a 17 year old Tundra beater? By the way, how does it ride?
toyotas rust problems began when they started using recycled metals to lower the cost they didnt get all the rust out and over time they internaly rusted not just from the outside the salt sped it up. You down subarus but if you get one thats been maintained im seeing more old subarus than old toyotas or anything else in the tri state area. Ive spoken to like five people just in my little area with foresters that have 280k another had close to 400k and no problems they all told me they will last you and so far so good. The trans once in a blue moon will tiny jerk only at low speed but barely noticeable its just looking for the gear barely sometimes. My wife has had subarus for the past 10 years all foresters and no issues and now we have the wrx automatic 23 model and this car is sick! love a subaru!
We love our '96 T100 4x4!
We have stock tires and get much better fuel mileage than does your customer.
A local seller has 95’ T100 with 96k miles it’s in excellent condition but the person is asking 13.5k which seems steep
I bought a new on in 97. Best Truck I ever owned. But I had to get a bigger one 😅
It’s a beautiful truck! I’d buy it. Your the man Scotty I’ve always enjoyed your help and info brother. Hope all is well with ya 😊
