  • Thanks for watching! This video took such a long time because I was lazy with audio. By the time I got it to my editor, he was busy for about 2 months. Oops! That's on me.
    Anyway, big changes are coming to the channel. Streams will happen more frequently, I have a cool Shorts series I'll be trying, and quizzes are coming back.

    alolan grimer is your Indicator species. Grimer were brought in to clean up alola because it was so polluted and changed into alolan grimer because of the sheer quantity of pollutents. but are now going extinct in the islands because there is literally not enough trash and pollutents to to feed them. so how many that can be found is a good indicator of how polluted an area is. If grimer/muk is easy to find then there is alot of trash if they are hard to find/ extinct the island is clean. pokemon has well established grimer and muk do can and do live in water so its an "as above so below" deal. They use alolan grimer and muk as part of the trash collection system in alola so grimer and muk are being spread around replenishing breeding stock but if they are "rare" then its simply too clean for a population to maintain.
    this is basically all said in game btw

      I agree beside that we don't know if Grime can be an aquatic spieces , they are not encountert theire from waht i can find but that might be due to game mecanics, we also see that at some acasions pokemon labor like the rotoms is used wich might cause the less polution wich threatens grimers existence.

      @@Irelevant472 well we know grimer in general can be aquatic the only games that freature them not near or in water are gen 3 where they are found in a volcano (for some reason) and even in those games Pokemon sapphire's pokedex states its species origin is it was sludge from the sea floor. in other games the pokedex states it comes from polluted streams. In game Grimer can be found while surfing and fishing in Celadon City and in the Castelia Sewers. "Fishing" indicating that they can and do submerge themselves in the water. Also in the anime the only time we've seen wild muk that isnt in a sewer was an episode that shows them happily living inside a polluted lake. So they shown to be amphibious at best.

    The most interesting bit between Corsala and Mareanie, the SOS call of Corsala is has the chance to summon a mareanie, so while most of the time, Corsola is doing a call for help, sometimes their predator might show up.

    17:00 It could be fun to see Dhelmise as a reverse indicator species, one that only pops up in poor quality environments. It IS a Ghost type that sustains itself on wrecked ship parts, anywhere it shows up inherently is going to be the sight of lots of crashed boats

    • @avanelletheclockfriend2515
      @avanelletheclockfriend2515 27 วันที่ผ่านมา +8

      I feel like generally living near shipwrecks doesn’t really make it an indicator species, reverse or not. It sustains itself on the life force of other Pokémon(like Wailord) and sea detritus, while the ship parts are just something for it to use as a means of attacking and anchoring itself- pun not intended. Plus, Dhelmise can also be found in areas with clean ocean water- specifically, it can be fished up on the Isle of Armor, though I don’t remember the exact spot. Based on the style of anchor it’s depicted with and the fact that it uses a wooden ship’s wheel, Dhelmise most likely primarily utilize materials from old wooden ships, not modern ships that would create pollution. This would make sense, as the difference in weight would allow it to move its “head” far more easily without destabilizing itself, compared to if it were using only metal parts from modern ships.
      I think it’s also a good idea to take its inspiration into account. Dhelmise, having a body made of seaweed that also happens to get very long(hundreds of yards according to the dex), is most likely based on kelp, specifically giant kelp. Research has shown that kelp actually IS somewhat of an indicator species(well, kelps in general that is, not just one type), being sensitive to temperature changes and nutrient levels in the water. As it’s also photosynthetic(which could potentially apply to Dhelmise too, as it can learn sunny day and growth, and used to be able to learn synthesis), particularly dirty water would likely harm it in that sense as well, either through debris outright blocking sunlight or just greatly reducing its availability. Personally, I like to classify Dhelmise as a photosynthetic hunter-detritivore based on the information known about it, because it’s interesting and makes sense for something like it to have that flexible survival strategy. Also, this was disregarding the importance of kelp forests as ecosystems in their own right, something reflected with Dhelmise both in how it is said to get along well with Skrelp and, less reliably, in some cute TCG art showing fish Pokémon hiding in it.
      I feel like the issue with this argument comes from assuming that Seafolk Village has unclean water. While it wouldn’t be perfect, the people who live there seem to live very traditional lives, and most likely many of them make a living from the surrounding sea- a strong deterrent against allowing the build-up of pollution. The population isn’t very large which means any waste production would be more than manageable, and with someone like Hapu in charge I highly doubt people are going to be getting away with dumping garbage into the ocean and whatnot. You can have ships and boats and the like exist somewhere without the water being fouled.
      Odds are the lack of ocean biodiversity has more to do with the specific type of habitat in the area rather than purely stemming from human activities; if corals and the like don’t naturally grow there, it makes sense that many of the reef-dwelling fish Pokémon wouldn’t be there. The population of Dhelmise might also discourage the presence of Wimpod, as they would both be competing for detritus and I don’t think the comically wimpy isopod would be keen on getting into conflict with the approximately 12-foot-tall undead seaweed that has figured out how to weaponize an entire anchor for fun and profit.
      Anyways there you have it folks, sleep-deprived thoughts from the #1 Dhelmise fan

    I can imagine if a magikarp survives long enough to become a gyrados naturally then it’s very likely the tables will turn on what was once its natural predators.
    With some exceptions.
    I can see a lone sharpedo becoming a sizable meat for a gyrados but a pack of them could easily overwhelm a lone gyrados.

    • @Pokecology
      @Pokecology  25 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      That was one of the real-life elements I had to ignore here - fish don't have very certain food webs because larger fish will often just eat smaller fish that may have tried to eat them at some point.

      @@Pokecology Still as screwed up as it sounds you wanna bet wild gyrados would probably feed on Magikarp and probably younger newly evolved gyrados?
      Many organisms feed on younger individuals of their own species.
      It’s screwed up but it’s natural and actually good for the population as it weeds out the weaker and bad genes and ensures only the strongest survive to adulthood.

    Awesome video! The biological analysis is really interesting. I really like how you included terrestrial pokemon like Exeggutor and Gumshoos, it's always good to note that ecosystems will interact with others near them. The lines we humans imagine and draw aren't as solid as we might think.
    A little bit of criticism, though - I think your video might be a little bit over edited. It gets a little tiresome when every movement of the camera and every image on screen gets a whooshing sound. I appreciate the effort, but your work might benefit from you toning it down a bit.

    12:47 I think the move Infestation is proof of these smaller creatures and that water type lines like Mareanie and Dewpider learning the move suggests an aquatic equivalent of these organisms. There is also Attack Order which is unquestionably the Pokémon summoning something to attack for it, in Gen 9 it also shares visual effects with Struggle Bug and bug type Tera Blast, is the intent that these Pokémon have the ability to command these tiny bug-like creatures around? Would explain why we hardly see them if predators of these creatures can order them around at will including Staraptor who learns Struggle Bug for some reason, I wonder about Gamefreak's intent with these moves.

    Like, I imagine that Talonflame, as the analogue for the Peregrine Falcon, would be found in ALOT more places than it is, and there are probably alot of encounters from Poke Radar or HGSS radio that wouldn't be there if not for gameplay neccesity
    Also, It would be very interesting to come up with an ecology when you have stuff like large Geovores (or whatever you'd call a mineral-eater), Mineral-based lifeforms, and whatever you'd class a Ghost as. Probably would ignore some of the Dex Entries that are nonsensically extreme like Magcargo or Machamp
