A lot of Canon and Minolta auto exposure cameras from the 1970s used the practice of mounting the meter sensor inside the lens mount so that it would read through filters, as here. For B&W, filters do not track too well with exposure determined by through-filter metering. True accuracy would require adjusting the ISO per the assigned filter factor, but through the filter is a practical approximation. As for the lens, test's published when it was introduced to the market suggest that it just the 35mm 2.8 made for the Nikon F SLR, remounted into plastic. Nikon used this lens a lot in higher quality cameras, probably the same lens as the 35Ti less the later coating improvements.
Lovely video Robbie, thanks !
Also, this camera is soo easy to take its housing apart. Much props to Nikon!
It really is. Which is great because the ones I have found for super cheap all needed to be cleaned out lol
I bought one of these for my wife over 20 years ago. My wife lent it to my brother, who managed to break it. It powers up, winds, autofocuses, but doesn't trigger the shutter. I still have it. Lovely little camera.
That's awesome! Hopefully you can get it working some day!
By far my favorite point & shoot camera. Love the Sonnar design lens! As for street photography, you can actually use it. Press the shutter button, hold it and release it after you‘ve left the scene. Only now it makes its loud noises :)
haha good point! I dont mind the noise for street but I know a lot of people want to avoid that
Absolutely all right with you, incredible sharp lens. And besides i love its design, remenbering the 80’s!!
It is very 80s which I love too ;)
Man, Robbie, for ten bucks I’d be havin one of those Nikons also. What a great find you had and some awesome photos you made. Great video.👍👍
Thank you T!
Love your videos Robbie, great to follow along with you on your adventures
Thank you George! I appreciate it :)
Good to see you back in action. Great vid.
Good to be back after a nice break!
Been meaning to get back into photography for the longest time. I have this camera and can say it’s one of my faves
Placing the meter window inside the filter ring was pretty common among cameras of that era. The Olympus Trip 35 did it with a selenium meter.
I had so many of those Olympus Trip cameras. I had one with a 'big finder' which was cool lol
Another camera having a similar light meter right under the lens is the Agfa Optima Sensor from the 1970s. But this camera doesn’t have AF. It has zone focus instead. And the film is manually advanced, what makes it very quiet. And due to its size it‘s very stealthy. It‘s a simple camera, but small and reliable. Perfect for streetphotography.
I have a Ricoh AF-5 that is very similar to the Nikon in this video.
Beautiful scenes
This was my first film camera! Love it
woohoo!
Robbie. This video was Amazing. I love the style of your videos and the pictures even more. And I like how cringe you look early in the morning with a cigar and a point and shoot in the field. Awesome.
Also your glasses look really good in you.
I appreciate all of that my friend!
That’s one camera I’ve always wanted. Had a Canon AF35 and I’m guessing it’s very similar. The railroad photo at the beginning reminded me of ‘Stand by Me’
dude, I love that movie! I always feel nostalgic on those particular train tracks. I grew up around there and we watched Stand by Me all the time.
@@RobbieMaynardCreates black and white really brings out those early Fall tones like you said
Great breakdown of the pikaichi!
Thank you buddy!
I have this!! Love it much. Shot it with Kodak Pro Image 100. Scrumptious results.
This lens is just too nice!
Used mine today. Impromptu visit to a car show so I grabbed my L35 af and a roll of Fuji color film.
Thanks for the video and being different from most of the stuff on here.
I appreciate it Joel!
You are so right this is a beautiful camera. I have had a few die in me though but hey then you get to se the inside of it. Just be aware if you have charged the flash - it does give you a good shock! Saw it compared to the TI35 - its more plasticy and it makes noise - but it REALLY good!
haha luckily the entire battery compartment was full of battery acid so no charges! But I do think about then when I take one of these old P&S's apart.
Have one of these that has the higher iso and, while it doesn’t seem to auto rewind anymore, it’s one of my go to cameras
Mine doesn't auto-rewind either. Im not sure if thats normal or not lol
Banger
Thanks brother!
honestly, i would have been thinking the opposite. "why would you be shooting color film, you dummy." LOL! we already have way too many youtube "photographers" out there saturating the place with point and shoot color, we really dont need any more of that. Your choice to shoot black and white is perfect, and so so soooo much better than all the rest out there on youtube!
haha thank you so much, my friend! I will warn you, I have more videos coming with tons of color film lol
Thi Minolta Hi-matic F (and all Minoltas rangefinders) has this "meter-behind-the-filter" layout. Very handy.
Oh yea! I forgot about those. I had one for a while but I didnt care for the lens much
Hi Robbie, I've had way to many point n shots in the past but I only own one now & it's this one. It's the Ken Rockwell of point n shots enough said !
haha our lord and savoir!
I like the glasses yah got in this.
camera's nice too.
I'd love to get another point and shoot but I already have too many that I don't shoot enough
haha I have a storage container full of P&S's that I never use lol
The irony of "enviromental" police dumping a plastic tarp in nature is quite striking
Right? I was as shocked to hear that as you are lol
Great video! Have you given any thought to making a video on how to clean the L35AF like you did?
I doubt it. I dont plan on taking it apart unless it starts to break down
Great video I was missing you already great photo wow that crazy wasn't a body poor Bear
Thanks buddy! It put a good scare into me lol
Although with the second version the ISO goes up to 1000 you can't manually set it.
645 reference!? Damn I can’t wait to get mine now in the mail
Nice video
Salute
its a special camera! Hope you are loving it
I had one of these years ago and it got stolen along with the rest of my gear. I actually got my gear back from the pawn shop where it ended up, but this camera wasn't in the mix. I assume the pawn dude didn't want it and the person that stole it ditched it somewhere. I've considered replacing it a few times, but prices on them are wild.
Great video man... And yeah, this lens is an absolute gem.
Did you have to pay for it? Pawn shops are the worst
@@RobbieMaynardCreates Thankfully, I didn't. I guess they have insurance for this kind of thing and the cops basically retrieved my gear along with a bunch of other gear that was all stolen by the same person(s) thanks to one of the victims going in and seeing their stuff for sale and being able to prove it.
Nice video, didn't realize CatLabs was based here in MA.
I wonder what it is, I get excited for all these new films only to find out a lot of them are re-packaged Foma. (Not that there's anything wrong with Foma.)
it is not made here though, it was only engineered here and it is manufactured over in Europe.
Im not sure if its re-packed film or not but I honestly love the results of it. Grain was pretty pronounced but it was surprisingly sharp
Nice review on the Nikon. Makes me think of trying one. Not sure if you have tried one but I would say that the sharpest point and shoot to me would be my Konica Hexar AF with the 35mm F2,Tthey are about 3 times the price of the Nikon but they are worth every penny and the images are just stunning.
Thats awesome! I haven't had the pleasure of using one of those. I saw a gold version of it a while back and was blown away
Love this video have a question Is there any way to clean the view finder of debris ? Also is yours clear?
Mine is clean! You would need to take the top part of the camera off with some of the screws but if you have never taken a point and shoot apart before.. you may not want to.
Great photos! I bought one on ebay and I'm having some trouble to have the focus that I want in my picutres. But I don´t know if it's just that I have to improve my aim or there is something wrong with the camera's focus. Could you please give some tips about the focus practice? Thanks!
These old point and shoots tend to get a bit wonky over time. Maybe its an electronic issue. I dont have much experience with fixing these so Im probably not the right person to ask lol
Just came across this video and you mentioned in the text at the beginning of the video that one of the filters you used was a 46mm Tiffen 85b filter. I was looking into getting one for this camera as I use Kodak Vision 3 500T quite a lot and like the option of warming it up with a filter when I want to. However I can't find that filter in 46mm anywhere, not even on Tiffen's own website. Did you purchase a Tiffen filter in 46mm or did you use a step up ring to attach the filter to the camera?
I found it on BH a while back. I actually had a whole video made about 85b filters but it was lackluster so I just deleted the file. 46mm is a pretty small filter which is why I assume they are not readily available. Scanning on 35mm sort of eliminates the effect of the filter in Silverfast but its much more effective with tungsten balanced film even with the auto-correction in post.
Great video ! While I love these type of cameras my experience is not very good. I have the Nikon L35AWAF but it does not rewind and Canon 35AFML which is similar but has problems with film advance. So lately I am using cameras like Nikon F80 and Canon Rebel in auto mode like P&S and I can use some great Nikon lenses on it. Only P&S I use are Olympus Mu1 and 2 which are really small when I don’t want to use the SLRs
I love those little Olympus cameras too but they are so outrageously expensive
Damn, that thing is cleeaaaan.
right?1
My shutter button is stuck but nothing is broken from the camera. Any help? Also great vid👍
That sucks to hear. Old electronic point and shoots tend to just die... hopefully thats not what happened. Replace the battery and see if that helps
Found one for $4 years ago in a thrift store and holy cow the price for one of these online!
I think you just made about $296 lol
Bought one of these 34 years ago when my daughter was born to take baby pictures.
Im sure its still working too
I’m thinking of buying one that’s not working the seller says he can’t turn it on. I’m curious to see if it’s better to tweek around it. Save me couple bucks. It’s for 25 plus shipping
If its just cleaning the battery terminals then yes but if its anything else, dont even bother. Electronic Point and Shoots just die sometimes and its impossible to fix without the exact right components
Ordered and waiting.
What Color Film would you suggest? Something..."filmy".
haha I shot all of these on Motion Picture film from Atlanta Film Company. Its cheaper than standard color negative stuff but it requires special processing so dont send it to a lab lol
Great video and I am glad it wasn't a human body wrapped up in that tarp. I think I would have taken off running, especially knowing there was a lone tent nearby. Anyway, your original video on the L35AF is one reason why I purchased one. I have enjoyed using it and felt fortunate to have been able to find a 1000 ASA version in pristine condition. Despite paying a but more than you did (I desperately wanted the one I found), it being loud and a bit of a brick, it takes fantastic photos and is great to take on hikes when I don't want to carry one of my other cameras.
I couldn't agree more! I have it on me whenever I go for a walk
And a freshly shed Snake skin. You would think they would dump it and remove the tarp so that other scavengers would eat it over time!
Yeah, Im still not convinced it was a bear lol
@@RobbieMaynardCreates 🤣🤣🤣
lol black and white in the fall againnnnnn
Your favorite :)
OMG why you didn't take the turtle home to play with jab?! lolllll
He would have eaten Jasmine lol
I found one at a flea market for a buck 😊
haha alright, who has a better deal than that! Comment below lol
there are actually three different versions of this camera! there are two newer versions, the AF2 an AF3. They use the same lens and function almost exacty the same except with slightly improved autofocus points and some other features. most importantly, you can still find the AF3 super affordably compared to the L35AF
Really? Its always the opposite. Good to know!
first
i still don't understand why they would just leave a bear out there to rot, in a tarp? lol
To scare me, obviously!
Now why the hell would the environmental police just throw a bear carcus in a random spot, next to random power lines, wrapped up in a tarp?? That doesn't make sense haha
I have no idea! The Police Department was confused by it too lol
