I just looked at the manual for the L35af and it tells you how to cover the meter to trick The Flash into popping up. I think that was just a cost-saving measure rather than putting a switch with a whole other mechanism in it. So I'm guessing the camera still meters either way. The other possibility is since it was designed by a car designer could just be for cleaner looking aesthetic. Other manufacturers made similar looking cameras that did include a conventional flash switch.

The 2 settings for the rewind are for choosing to rewind the film either fully, or rewind leaving a little bit of film (called the film ‘leader’) outside the film canister. That second option is nice if you process your own film, you don’t need to open the canister to unload it.
I found a L35AF at a thrift for $1.50 a few years back. Still shoot with it all the time. I LOVE this camera. I can't stop talking about it! All my friends tell me to shut it! Here you are making videos about it, amazing! Cheers!
Wow!!! $1.50 oh my god!!!!! That is amazing. So glad you love this camera as much as I do. I am literally holding mine right now about to go take photos! Thanks for watching 🙏🏻🙋🏻♀️🎞📸

Great to know you are a fan of this little Nikon! I used to have 5 of the original ones when I first started my camera collection- years ago 😁. All are gone now but still have a fond memories of it! Thanks for the video!
I purchased two Nikon L35AF2s new in the box for $7 U.S. each around 2002. I bought them for my daughter who was twelve at the time. She was unable to destroy them although she did take out the next two digital cameras she had. They took great 4 x 6 inch prints, which is what they were designed for. The cameras still work fine and look like new.
Amazing job on laying out the basics of the whole series of cameras! I certainly want to try one out, but the prices are a bit steep for me! Hopefully, I can find one to borrow!

Anyone have any other solutions for a stuck shutter? Won't depress. Tried the battery door trick but unfortunately no success. Camera turns on, I can hear the flash charging, rewind film buttons work. Just the shutter :S
Another common problem on the Nikon L35AF is the dead capacitor. In low light situations you'll be incapable of shooting with the camera. Nonetheless, it isn't much of a problem if you only plan on shooting in daylight.
I remember my mom had a L35AF back in the day and I'm still searching for it, but I'm afraid she threw it away. IIRC she had an issue with the camera scratching the film, one large scratch directly through the center of the image, and a professional cleaning didn't help - got anything on that?

Very informative video Lucy, I just picked up a Nikon one touch for $100 but after some research I realized it’s also known as the L35AF2! These are beautiful cameras and I think I’d pickup a l35af to go with it.
Yay! So glad you own one now too. Hope I could be helpful with my not so professional video on these cameras haha 😂 I love them so much hope you have fun with it.
The ISO of the first L35AFs went up to 400 (like mine). Later ones go to 1000. Apart from my L35AF (that I love) I also have a TW2, which is one of the many cameras that I've bought but haven't tried, yet. I'm sure it's not as nice as the L34AF, but maybe it deserves at least one roll of film, even though it needs stupid batteries.
Yes you are right about the ISO, i think I forgot to mention that! You should most certainly fire it up and run a roll through it, those batteries are annoying yes but it will be worth it! I feel as if you have A LOT of cameras??? haha
@@LucyLumen Haha! Yes! I go to thrift stores a lot and if I come across a(nother) camera that looks decent and costs €5 or less I will buy it. Funnily enough most of my point & shoot cameras are Olympus. I did try one of those recently. It was the Superzoom 70G (of which I have 3) and it's a surprisingly good camera that also feels nice to hold, unlike some of my other (flimsy) plastic P&S cameras.
YES! Loves these cameras and this really makes me want to find one around here. Really helpful tips, especially if one is considered "not working" on ebay might be fixable :) haha love the comedic moments! Nice to see you got this one done!
Glad you liked the funny moments haha I'm not very good at being serious and professional for like a whole 18 minutes haha. Yes keep an eye out on FB marketplace I have picked up a few that say "won't turn on" but then got them working. Thank you for watching my love :)
Lucy hi. Old cameras can easily be fixed if its mechanical issues by making /repairing any component or part thereof with superglue+bakingsoda, plasticwelding+steelwool, 3dprinting and further electronic or hobbyshop motors. Also pirate components by testing, catalog and toolbox. Never duct tape unless you are away from base. Other issues, try to get circuit repair diagrams and books asap, which you may find over the top but your electronic buddy could use when you turn to him, or even a client that have guts to repair stuff. Everything other than a broken heart can be fixed.
Nikon is my my brand of choice but for what ever reason I've never had one of their P&S, I probably should change that. Oh and you braking out laughing was awesome.
Hey Alex! Yes I am a total Nikon gal we have so many of them! Definitely keep an eye out for one of these or the nikon TI35 is it that also looks really cool, but is expensive! In saying that I LOVE my canon sure shot 76 zoom and it doesn't have any build quality issues but it doesn't have the same look as this camera and doesn't look as cool, cause I mean come on, Nikon is way cooler haha Also I watched "Censor" last night have you seen it? I'm not sure what I thought...
@@LucyLumen Nikon has a special place in my heart for sure. Censor was a film I wanted to check out but have not had the opportunity to watch. I've seen some reviews on the film and it seems to be something of a divisive movie, put despite its mixed opinions I think its great that a new film maker ( a new voice) got to make his vision, the film he wanted to make.
I have a variety of Nikon film cameras from the Ftn, Nikkormat, F2AS, to the F4s. With that said, I can tell you that I love shooting with my L35AF (that goes to ISO 1000). BTW, I loved those images you showed in another video where you were shooting with Kodak Ultramax. Gotta get some for this camera.
Nice review Lucy. I've had a couple of L35AFs over the years. Great one to have on hand. Coincidentally, I just finished listening to that same Roxy Music album right before watching your video. Cheers!
Hello Tom, sorry for my late reply I somehow missed this amazing comment!! That is so cool and weird that you just listened to that album, I have been planning a video on the photography of the Roxy music album covers so I’ve been smashing country life and siren!! Hoping to explore music and cinema more on the channel in the future! So stay tuned 👍🏻👍🏻🎥🎵
I've been looking for a 'new' P&S to try and I've found myself leaning towards the Canon Autoboy 2 because I LOVE the design - it seems to be SOOOO similar to this OG Nikon you love! Have you tried the Canon Autoboy 2?
Hey Sam 👋🏻 thanks for watching! Yes they look so similar def same era and very similar design! I haven’t used one but i have used the CanonAF35ML and that also looks really similar to this auto boy you mention…I have used it in a video if you want to have a look. I have the canon sure shot 76 zoom and that is soooo good, really sharp. Most of what canon made, especially in that time frame before they were trying to make things too compact and compromise on lens quality is worth buying and I’m sure would be great 👍🏻 let me know how you go always up for a camera chat 💬 📸😊👋🏻❤️
I was about to talk abt that specific camera, yes! It’s very similar and it takes amazingly sharp pictures, I have one and i love it (also you can shoot more than 24/36 frames on it, I’ve shot up to 40 in one roll)
@@driverchris Thanks for watching Christopher! Yes actually now you mention it I got about 39 images when I used that camera too, which is so awesome. I really want one of those as well haha.
"Nice background music" - You've got to be kidding⚠ - I could tolerate Lucy's over 300 "SuOW's" But her "partner's" 22 minutes & 10 seconds of the same needless repetition music is close to unbearable...
This was so helpful, thank you! Beautiful photos :) Just making the switch from digital to film, and chose the L35AF2 as a starter camera. I am a little confused about the no ISO option. Maybe dumb question, but what does it default to? Wondering how to decide what film to buy for it....
Hello lovely! Thank you for watching and I'm so excited to hear you are coming over to film :) Most film stocks will have something called a DX code and your camera will read that and do it all itself. Example you shoot colour plus 200 in your L35 and it will set it to 200 by reading the DX code. Some films don't have DX coding so then your camera will just go to it's default setting which various camera to camera and sometimes can be something annoying like 100 ISO. You can buy DX code stickers to put on your roll of film and this will then over ride the default setting or allow you to push or pull a film. Tbh I have never had to worry with this really and just shoot at box speed generally. I hope that makes sense I'm no the best at explaining technical things haha. Feel free to ask any questions you may have in the future too :) Happy shooting
This video is so good, I’m so glad I stumbled upon it - and you! I also just made the switch from digital to film and landed on the L35AF2 as my first toy. And, like Halle above me, I am also confused about the No ISO option. Could you explain what that means to a total newbie like me? Can I shoot with standard 400 rolls? Or do I need to buy special film? (Also wondering if I should exchange the L35AF2 for the original model if the ISO is a big deal..)
I don’t think there is unfortunately. I showed a few people and a camera store and they said the capacitor has gone so even if it was fixable it will cost more than to buy a new one. Best to just keep an eye out for one on marketplace
5:15 Actually you are not that far off. Ferrari does have a car named LaFerrari which literally means “The Ferrari” And the Nikon design with the red stripe started with the F3. It was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro who yes did design the DeLorean and even the VW Golf or Rabbit as we called it here in the US.
Cosign! Giugiaro is an absolute workaholic. Designed the Lotus Esprit, Fiat Panda, Maserati Ghibli, and believe it or not The Hyundai Pony. I think he refused commercial recognition for that last one... 😅
My L35AF wouldn't rewind the film, so I had to do it manually but now the number is stuck at "s". How can I manually rewind it so I can put new film in it to shoot.
Lovely video. I've just bought the L35 AF2, is there any way of knowing it works without film in it? Or do I need to put both batteries and film in to find out? Thanks! I have to say it's a bit of a stretch from designing the Nikon L35 AF to the Ferrari and the Delorean, that definitely made me laugh!
I'm pretty sure the AD is the same as the AF just with a date back from memory. There's also an AD2 though which can easily be mistaken which is good but doesn't have the Sonnar lens.
Bought one today that was said to be working but got it home and with batteries it instantly makes the film roller click a bunch. Either off or on it does it. Not really she what to do with it.
Testing without a roll of film, does the film rewind function works or it has to have a film loaded? Asking because the film advance motor works after each shot without any film inside.
I have the Nikon L35AF and it’s actually my first film camera but it always malfunctions. I was on my 32nd shot then the shutter button suddenly got stucked. The way I fixed this before was I open the battery door and try to move or push the battery further then closing the door again then it’ll make the sound after you push the shutter button which is the film advancing then i’ll be able to take a shot again but as soon as I take the shot, the shutter button will be stucked again so I have to do the same procedure, and that’s how I normally “fix” it but on my 32nd shot, that happened again and I thought oh i’ll just open the battery door again then try to fix/move the battery then move it then it’ll come back to normal but when I did that, nothing changed and i tried changing batteries and also tried to do the foil thing inside but it still didn’t work so I tried rewinding the film by pushing the button underneath then all of a sudden it started rewinding when I thought it’s not working.
Then ofc I took out the film and put a new one and tried a few shots and it was working fine, went out to take pictures and the malfunction still happens but yeah i could still fix it by opening the battery door and I got up to my 26th shot and it happened again so I had to rewind the film again. It’s frustrating me cause I love this camera but i am wasting my film when my only to choice to make it work is to rewind the film everytime the shutter button gets stucked even if I try to fix the battery compartment. Do you guys have any suggestions? I messaged the seller of the camera and he said he’ll offer a return and a refund but it’s too much a hassle and I feel bad cause I still used it for a little bit.
I have the L35 AW AF and am having some trouble with when the battery runs out mid-film. Once I put new batteries in it seems to be stuck and not continue shooting and winding the film. This means that I have to always rewind and either continue back to the correct frame or just quit and leave part of the film unused. Does anyone have any tips here?
Hey James! Thanks for watching. The original video has a few different stocks shown at the start…all the photos of me are shot on Kodak ultramax and the others are Fuji c200 I’m pretty sure! Ultramax bangs in that camera with the flash!!! It’s such a good camera in general. Hope you enjoyed the vids and merry Xmas 🎄 ❤️
Don’t worry. They are beautiful, with that analogue meter. Yum. But like a lot of the luxury ti cameras of the era they were kinda sold like collector’s jewellery and not remarkable to shoot with.
Hi Lucy! I just got one and it works! But it’s always on self timer even when I don’t set it on self timer. So I can’t take a photo right away like I want to. Any tips? Thank you! 🙏
Hey lovely, thanks for watching! That’s an issue I haven’t heard of but sounds frustrating. If you haven’t maybe try with no film in just taking lots of dummy photos with the self timer and using the switch/lever it may fix itself I find with lots of cameras problems can stem from lack of use for 20 + years and after a while it goes back to working when you use it again. It’s not a problem I have an easy answer for I’m sorry. Let me know how you go though! 👍🏻📸🎞
i had a lot of issues with the one i bought already (seemingly in perfect condition) it was an absolute bummer to have this thing on my trip to Vietnam thinking it would be reliable, which it's absolutely not for anyone who falls for the hype for these cameras, be aware. Even if they're in mint condition they stop working or act quirky very easily I'm also not really that impressed with the image quality and sharpness of the lens.
Hi Lucy, is your Nikon L35 af the first edition or 2nd. As the original version only goes up to 400 Asa or is yours the one that goes up to 1000 Asa? Thanks Matt
@@LucyLumen gotcha. I don't suppose there is a couple of notches after the 400 mark on the camera? If you have that one as well. I think it was the Pentax spotmatic allowed you to go higher with the iso. Was wondering if the Nikon coukd be the same. Matt
Hey 👋🏻 thanks for watching. No not really, it’s too expensive haha! I always have a brick of color plus as it’s cheaper and just my go to and then Ektar is my favourite so I’ll have a pack of that. I do have a few expired rolls that friends have given or viewers have sent though! What about you lovely?
Hey victor! Thanks for watching glad you enjoyed. My partner makes all the music for the channel so it’s all original. You can check out some of his music here luxlumen.bandcamp.com/album/analog-adventures-volume-one
I bought my first one on the trip that I'm doing in South Spain. Bought it Barcelona. Is the one that goes from ASA 400 to ASA 1000. The only thing that scared me a bit is that the autofocus is always on the landscape Mark... I think it's broke aaand it scares me a bit, because I've already shot 5 rolls with it.. Bought it in Barcelona for around 280€ (in line with market here in EU) very very hard to find and I was so happy. Btw do you think it is repairable? I really hope photos that i took didn't killed many photos. In any case this is the analog stuff that comes with going analog with a 40 year old little camera
I have the second version which I like very much and a rather beat up and ugly Nikon One Touch 200 which doesn't have manual adjustments to speak of but takes surprisingly good photos. They can still be had at a fair price.
Hey does anyone out here have any tips for a l35af whose flash won't stay down? Mine was great for a while and today the flash popped up and won't stay back down now....🤦🏼♀️
Shooting macro on a point and shoot is being WEIRD??? Says the girl shooting a 1980's BRICK film camera? LOL I'm kidding. That bit made me laugh. I am OBSESSED with my L35AF. It's an original with 1000 ISO. Has a red "D" stamped on top as a "Display" model. Looks BRAND SPANKING NEW. Fires like it, too! ^_^ Loved this video! XD
LOL 😂 I said a lot of things in this video that made people laugh I think I’m terrible at talking about specs of cameras 📸 but I LOVE these so I wanted to share my tips for fixing them. I’m glad to hear you are also a fan and so jelly of your mint display version!!!!!! Thanks for watching
Hi Charlie, it's actually a little bit tricky you need to get a very small screwdriver and remove a few screws that are next to the main battery compartment then gently pry the cover back to release the 2025. If you're not confident with things like that it might be worth taking your camera into a shop and asking if they can help with it I'd hate for another one of these to go to the graveyard they are amazing when they are working!!
When I was shooting under hostile conditions where I did not want my Leica M6 rangefinder with 35mm f/1.4 lens to get damaged, lost, or stolen, I used the Nikon L35AF with 35mm f/2.8 lens as a backup.
I’ve found it’s always an issue with the battery. Just try a few different very fresh and strong batteries and push down on the cover. If you’re careful a tiny piece of aluminium can work to help with the connection

In saying that I LOVE my canon sure shot 76 zoom and it doesn't have any build quality issues but it doesn't have the same look as this camera and doesn't look as cool, cause I mean come on, Nikon is way cooler haha
Also I watched "Censor" last night have you seen it? I'm not sure what I thought...
@@LucyLumen Nikon has a special place in my heart for sure.
Censor was a film I wanted to check out but have not had the opportunity to watch. I've seen some reviews on the film and it seems to be something of a divisive movie, put despite its mixed opinions I think its great that a new film maker ( a new voice) got to make his vision, the film he wanted to make.
Have you tried the af3? I just picked one up. Can't wait to try it.
" that same Roxy Music album" - 🤮
Nice background music.
Thank you he always comes up with something great!
"Nice background music" - You've got to be kidding⚠ - I could tolerate Lucy's over 300 "SuOW's" But her "partner's" 22 minutes & 10 seconds of the same needless repetition music is close to unbearable...
ROFL Lux put horns on you ROFL this was so good... Thanks Lucy... Another great video
Hahaha I’m glad you enjoyed it Anthony! Yes he had fun with that bit, I am a bit of a control freak with things I will admit
@@LucyLumen Yes I guessed Lux was having a dig :)
I didn’t know that it was one of the first autofocus Nikon’s
Hey Eric, thanks for watching! Yes I'm pretty sure it was the first, this camera is really special!
I've heard other ausies say vig netty before. Kindof just thought it was an aus thing.
Hey Kevin, lol yeah we are pretty lazy with our language over here. Thanks for watching :)
Awesome video, love the look, the editing, love "the Ferrari" great bit.
Thank you Tim! haha I'm glad you thought it was funny :)
So if the camera is beeping it’s done for? Anyway to fix it?
Well explained.
Thank you so much, I did make notes for this one and tried to be organised!
Does anyone know how to undo the small battery compartment to replace?
Definitely “The Ferrari” of point and shoots :)
Haha yes it is. Well put I wish I had said that in the video now! Thanks for watching and commenting lovely :)
Hi, very helpful video. What's about L35AD? Is it as good as L35AF?
I'm pretty sure the AD is the same as the AF just with a date back from memory. There's also an AD2 though which can easily be mistaken which is good but doesn't have the Sonnar lens.
Bought one today that was said to be working but got it home and with batteries it instantly makes the film roller click a bunch. Either off or on it does it. Not really she what to do with it.
Testing without a roll of film, does the film rewind function works or it has to have a film loaded? Asking because the film advance motor works after each shot without any film inside.
Any ideas if the flash won’t pop up? 😔😅
Darn it!! I don’t need a new camera but this video makes me want one of these.😩
I have the L35 AW AF and am having some trouble with when the battery runs out mid-film. Once I put new batteries in it seems to be stuck and not continue shooting and winding the film. This means that I have to always rewind and either continue back to the correct frame or just quit and leave part of the film unused. Does anyone have any tips here?
In the original l35 video you did, what was the film stock you were using in the photos you showed at the beginning?
Love the video Lucy!
I keep lusting after the Nikon 35ti but wow the prices 😳
@@LucyLumen It's no problem at all! I took it to a shop this past weekend and am waiting to see what they say. Will update you! :) Thanks Lucy!
@@LucyLumen Hi Lucy! I took your advice and it works now!! ☺️🙏 thank you!!
@@Katiedoan88 this has made my day!!! I’m so happy it’s working and I could help, enjoy your camera 📸
@@LucyLumen I most definitely will! Keep up the incredible work, Lucy!! I really enjoy watching your videos! ☺️
What film do you shoot with when you use your flash for photos with the l35af?
Hey Johnny I use all different films but here I used Kodak Ultramax 400 and maybe Kodak Color plus
i had a lot of issues with the one i bought already (seemingly in perfect condition)
it was an absolute bummer to have this thing on my trip to Vietnam thinking it would be reliable, which it's absolutely not
for anyone who falls for the hype for these cameras, be aware. Even if they're in mint condition they stop working or act quirky very easily
I'm also not really that impressed with the image quality and sharpness of the lens.
Hi Lucy, is your Nikon L35 af the first edition or 2nd. As the original version only goes up to 400 Asa or is yours the one that goes up to 1000 Asa? Thanks Matt
Hi mine is the 1000 version I actually have a bunch of them cause they are so fragile !
@@LucyLumen gotcha. I don't suppose there is a couple of notches after the 400 mark on the camera? If you have that one as well. I think it was the Pentax spotmatic allowed you to go higher with the iso. Was wondering if the Nikon coukd be the same. Matt
do you also collect/hoard film ?
Hey 👋🏻 thanks for watching. No not really, it’s too expensive haha! I always have a brick of color plus as it’s cheaper and just my go to and then Ektar is my favourite so I’ll have a pack of that. I do have a few expired rolls that friends have given or viewers have sent though! What about you lovely?
This was so helpful, thank you. My issue was the battery compartment, off to get some duck tape 😂
Amazing! I am so happy to help and really hope your L35AF lives on now :)
My Nikon L35 AF focus indicator is stuck and doesnt even move enough to the first icon anybody know how to fix this other than going to a shop?
Purchased this camera through FB marketplace, shot 1 roll, now it won't advance the next roll. I'll try again tomorrow lol
can u do a video about the flash thing? I got an l35 af but the flash is quite slow to load, like 7 seconds and it is quite annoying :(
“The Ferrari” hahaha
lol I know right. Thanks for watching :)
Nice presentation.
Amazing video! whats your background song? thank you :)
Mine was great for a while and today the flash popped up and won't stay back down now....🤦🏼♀️
Use a faster film.
Caught that Permanent Records tote ;)
Yay!!! Nicely spotted. Such a cool shop and label 🙋🏻♀️👍🏻
How do you change the cr 2025 for the L35 TW I'm really struggling
Hi Charlie, it's actually a little bit tricky you need to get a very small screwdriver and remove a few screws that are next to the main battery compartment then gently pry the cover back to release the 2025. If you're not confident with things like that it might be worth taking your camera into a shop and asking if they can help with it I'd hate for another one of these to go to the graveyard they are amazing when they are working!!
@@LucyLumen This battery feeds what? Do you know? My camara doesn’t let me put a film on always rewinds the film 🤷🏻♂️
Did u try L35AD3 or AF3?
No I haven’t used that one

That was what she said in the video
When I was shooting under hostile conditions where I did not want my Leica M6 rangefinder with 35mm f/1.4 lens to get damaged, lost, or stolen, I used the Nikon L35AF with 35mm f/2.8 lens as a backup.

So there is a Ferrari called "La Ferrari" which translates as "The Ferrari" so you're not wrong. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LaFerrari Great video as usual.
Hahaha no way! Okay well this makes me seem less silly I will have to school my partner on this one now. Grazie Edward :)
I have an L35 that has the power button stuck. Any tips on how to fix that?
I’ve found it’s always an issue with the battery. Just try a few different very fresh and strong batteries and push down on the cover. If you’re careful a tiny piece of aluminium can work to help with the connection
