🚌💨🎵 All You Can Hear ZF Ecomat Gearbox Sounds! 🚌💨🎵

The ZF Ecomat is the older type of two main type of automatic transmission offered by ZF Friedrichshafen for buses. Transmissions typically range from four to six speeds.
The ZF Ecomat can be identified by the following distinctive features:
1. Howl/Catyell at shift from second to third gear (not present in the newer ZF EcoLife).
2. Neutral at Bus Stop for certain buses. Can be identified by a subtle change in engine pitch when bus is not moving and handbrake is not engaged.
3. Retarder which sounds like groaning when decelerating.

There were several incarnations of Ecomat. The first generation made from 1979-1985. The second generation made from 1984 to 2001 (with and without NBS possible, EST-18 and EST-18E control for without and with electronic throttle). Also, there's Ecomat 2 and Ecomat 4.

The best Diesel engine in the world mixed with one of the best transmissions. NJ Transit NovaBus Cummins ISC with the ZF transmission was a good setup.

I rode those buses a lot when I lived in Philly back in the day. Also, the 2004-2006 era New Flyers with the ZFs were amazing, especially when the 2004 model year buses were retrofit with a Cummins ISL instead of the original DD Series 50s.

god i love the eeeeeee's and eyooooo's of the zf here in vancouver we have nova lfs buses with zf 6hp 554c gearboxes in them and sure they are quiet compared to these but they still have the eeeeeee's and eyooooo's which i love so so much

Forgot how Olympians sounded like in real life so for now it has to be the Super Olympians with loud whine (KM8827 which retired sounded like it's broken, and quite a few of the Wright ones have whine) and Enviro500s (LM5869 has the upshift sound for the 5HP and Citybus/NWFB should all make that)...
