After all these years critisizing Ecolife, I find myself coming back to this video. I have been driving city buses with different gearboxes now for a few years. I have tried almost every kind of box there is on offer, Ecomat, Ecolife, Voith and I-Shift. Not only have I lost my primary source of entertainment (gears on the Ecomat) but also my motivation to try and drive better.
In Finland at least, the bus routes are heavily contested. So every drop of fuel the companies can save on paper they will try to save. You have marketed Ecolife as economical and I can say, yes, on some cases, it is pretty economical. But at first let's look at some conclusions we can draw from this video, and how the comparison is unfair.
First of all, the Voith-equipped vehicle is closer to the kerb than the Ecolife-equipped one. It might only be about 5-10 cm, it's difficult to say from this angle. But look and it is closer. This distorts the results. I agree that Voith is louder, but that is because it is better for the engine, driver and passengers in terms of smoothness.
Secondly, inside, the microphone has a higher gain on the Voith-vehicle. You can see it easily, the door-locking click is around 2 dB(a) louder on it. How can it possibly be? They are supposedly identical vehicles. Probably you stuffed a lot of noise insulation under the hatches just to make the gears 1, 3 and 6 inaudible.
Thirdly and most importantly, is the engine. Yes it seems that the OM936hLA can cope pretty well with low revs. That's good. But there are plenty of engines that cannot: Volvo's D8K, FPT Tector 7 and Cursor 9, Cummins ISBe 6.7 just to name a few. They require around 1000 revs to get properly going, or else they'll vibrate and resonate across the cabin as the engine is struggling to accelerate the vehicle because of the stupid gearbox.
Getting going is the most important part in line traffic. Because it uses the most fuel, you want it to be over quickly. And struggling around suboptimal revs is NOT the answer. Why? Because of efficiency percentages. Engines are at their most efficient points at the peak torque band. They use more fuel per energy generated outside of that band. Forcing engines to use more fuel for the same kind of acceleration is idiotic. Not only fuel, but on some engines the oil pressure is minimal on low revs. So you're asking an engine to practically destroy itself over long-term? All because of those "saved" fuel droplets...
ZF had glorydays with older Ecomat' s because they sound awesome and amazing but this well i call this a not ZF i mean its so boring soundin gearbox and its missing that legendary ZF sound we all lovedz maby i start likeing Voith now because they still have something than this. ZF ecolife, Diet coke of ZF
ZF is an all around better gearbox anyway. More power given to the bus than a Voith. Talk to Wrightbus and make them fit your gearboxes to the sluggish Voith StreetDecks. They'd be vastly improved

Ecolife is a shit. We have it in Prague in SORs and I hate how it is shifting in low revs... the bus is chatteting and vibrating And its not comfortable at all
***** Can you explain to me how it is possible for an engine to make 6 times the noise of the same one just because the gearbox is different ? Thanks :)
The sound pressure level is a logarithmic function and not a linear scale. When sound level pressure increases 20 dB(a), the absolute pressure is increased ten times. That means it will sound 10^1 times as loud. A 40 dB(a) increase means a 10^2 increase and 60 dB(a) means a whopping 10^3 increase. But this comparison is completely unfair for Voith, as the driver was told to set off using kickdown which was disabled on the Ecolife box and not on the Voith one. 👎
***** "When sound level pressure increases 20 dB(a), the absolute pressure is increased ten times." So when ZF says the engine makes 6 times more noise with Voith than with ZF, it makes less than 20dB more noise ?
Is it really healthy to accelerate with the engine speeds under 1000 rpm? I can imagine that not being very good for the engine in the long run. Just come and see your product in action here. I recorded, at the back of the bus, inside sound levels up to 83 dB(A) when a new Euro 6 Volvo B8RLE was departing from the stop. Not so quiet any more...
stop complaining old bags about a bus engine noise.jesus whats up with people these days?they re quit but less power.u want noiseless vehicle?go hybrid.
ZF Ecomat is the best sound.
"ZF-EcoLife makes busses quiter"
ha! what? But I want my busses to sound like Formula 1 air raid sirens!
True
@@docdaneeka3424 yes🤣
@@docdaneeka3424 if you have a bus with Ecomat
Just kickdown every acceleration to give the passengers a crazy vibe
ZF ECOMAT ROCKS!!!!
SBS 3920B YAAAA
Modern gearboxes makes buses quieter - and boring. They don't have any character anymore.
They still make noise. I explained it all in a video. Go check it out
Thats not true, Voith still do the same sounds they did since day 1
"ZF ecolife makes buses quieter"
Alright thanks. Prefer to Allison & Voith now.
Voith is nice
zf ecomat is awesome sound than ecolife :(
*_•reshirm•_* I know

I love the good old sound of the zf ecomat
Yep
ZF ecomat is the best gearbox ever.
İndeed
ZF Ecomat 6HP504C is the best gearbox.
And bus drivers want ZF ECOMAT Sounds x)
i wish if u can continue production of zf ecomat
The Voith Mercades Citaro sounds much more nicer though.
I witnessed it a few days after my comment when I was on a EcoLife transmission Citaro being driven with its Kick Down haha
I like the whistle and howling when it slows down with the EcoLife ones and when it goes up and down gears. Very tuneful and bloody fast.
glad you enjoy our product so much !;)
u didnt make voith@@zfgroup
but old busses sound amazing, loved the ZF Ecomat
ZF before the Ecolife was the best ever. They could have atleast kept the Ecomat for sale as a cheaper alternative to the Ecolife.
Quieter? That's not good for me...
ZF Ecolife is very slow unlike ZF Ecomat with epic sounds
ZF had glorydays with older Ecomat' s because they sound awesome and amazing but this well i call this a not ZF i mean its so boring soundin gearbox and its missing that legendary ZF sound we all lovedz maby i start likeing Voith now because they still have something than this.
ZF ecolife, Diet coke of ZF
*_•hxxcker.reshirm•_* Ecolife gearboxes are still loud. I explained it all in a video on TH-cam.
You've summed it perfectly
VOITH SCREAM 4EVER !
YEA
i normally say zf ecomat is nice as hell, but if this is what ZF is gonna make now then im switching to voith DiWA
I like the older zf from the b10ble like the ecomat. I'm a noisy bus person I love them
If people don't like the noise then they can stick their headphones on. I personally like a loud engine and a loud gearbox.
Every bus should have ZF-ECOMAT
ZF is an all around better gearbox anyway. More power given to the bus than a Voith. Talk to Wrightbus and make them fit your gearboxes to the sluggish Voith StreetDecks. They'd be vastly improved
Ecolife is a shit. We have it in Prague in SORs and I hate how it is shifting in low revs... the bus is chatteting and vibrating And its not comfortable at all
To bude tím, že ZF právě řadí v nízkých otáčkách, narozdíl od Voithu, který to tahá do větších kvůli 4 stupňové převodovce (nebo 5) :)
Volvo D8K and Zf all bus vibrating.
Bring back the Ecomat
4:33 This is strictly impossible !
A bus engine emits approximately 70 dB. 6 times this would be 420 dB, this is impossible !
*****
What you are saying is untrue as the noise level pressure measured in decibels does not increase in a linear way.
***** Can you explain to me how it is possible for an engine to make 6 times the noise of the same one just because the gearbox is different ? Thanks :)

Im in a solaris urbino 18 zf ecolife it has a nice sound!
some of it in my city (check my urbino 18 videos) many of them have a yelling ZF EcoLife
Im still a voith fan but i like ecolife
ZF Ecomat was so much better than ZF Ecolife
Kyllä
Scania Lahti Scala has this gearbox loud aswell
that was NOT full load but still i prefer ZF
ZF Ecolife is so slow uphill it never kicksdown
stop complaining old bags about a bus engine noise.jesus whats up with people these days?they re quit but less power.u want noiseless vehicle?go hybrid.
For real man. I’m sensitive to Loud Sounds, so I’m glad they they are putting efforts to reduce Bus traffic noise.
ZF ruined their reputation with the Ecolife
The Ecomat was even better than Voith but sad that you guys stopped production of Ecomat
nice but i would still take a zf ecomat
nah zf ecomat makes it sound more powerful
First world problem
Zf 6hp602c the best
Voith DIWA .6 sounds better 😊
Got zf mecinces benz citaro zf
In singapore
ecolife more like e coli
Voith bad zf good
ZF ecomats are better
We know, but ZF ECOMAT has very nice sounds and we love it!! 😍ZF Ecolife is boring...🥹
