Another tip: I take a large ziplock bag and fill it with vinegar and tie it around the actual shower head and leave on for a few hours. It really works getting that hard water “ gunk” off.

For me, travel is a relief. My home area water is so hard even water filter don't stay effective long. It's really noticeable even when you do laundry... I traveled to several areas that the water is "soft", the detergent foams up much better and do a much better cleaning job.

I can 100% attest to water softeners being the culprit for my own hair problems. I moved from Vancouver,Canada to A more rural part of Alberta,Canada and my long hair became extremely tangled and had a weird thick film all over it. I was in tears everyday combing it out. Days of this turned into months, I couldnt figure out what it was --it actually cause me so much depression because I ended up shaving off all my hair because of the pain of combing through it everday was too much. I have so much love for dr.dray for mentioning it in a previous videos several months ago, my hair is now shoulder length and I just feel so much more attractive and happy overall. ❤❤❤❤❤❤

The shower head and sink tap aerators unscrew and come off, so you can soak them in a bowl of vinegar for a good while and not have to hold it up (and tire out your arm). If your shower head doesn't come off, an easy hack I've seen is securing a plastic bag with vinegar in it around the shower head with a rubber band.

She filmed herself cleaning the whole thing, which I imagine took quite a long time. She could’ve just unscrewed it and scrubbed it in the bathtub or put it in the dishwasher and saved herself an hour. 😂🤣😂 Needless to say, I didn’t bother finishing the rest of the video.

I moved from a much softer water area to a super hard water area. Last February before we knew the extent of covid, I visited my family back east for 2 weeks. It was an instant difference after I showered my first day there. Skin was clear by the 3rd day. I'm constantly battling breakouts where I live now. I need to go ahead and get the shower head water softener but what I really need is a home water softener. Washing my face in the hard water sink is still damaging. A cowlick I have has gotten worse from the water here causing build up, clarifying shampoo has helped a lot but I suspect a shower head water softener will make the cowlick go back to a non-issue like it was back east.
Thanks for covering the topic! Lots of people I think are fighting a losing battle. All the hair and skin products in the world can't overtake the damage from hard water.
PS, I use a bag around the showerhead with vinegar. Tie the bag around the showerhead and can leave it for longer.

The hair on my head began shedding big time following an extremely stressfull period in my life. So, I researched the net & decided to try the litttleextra coocoonion hair oil and a comb made of neem wood. It really truly made a difference. At present, I have lengthy, dense, black hair which has grown down to my waist and trimmed three times after I started. Easy and effective. Additionally, equally good is massaging the scalp - it encourages the growth. You just have to do this weekly. Before long, you will see new hair starting to grow.

After soaking is done, take an old tooth brush and scrub the parts. You can dis-assemble the screen and gasket to scrub with an old tooth brush, then reassemble and screw it back onto your faucet. Repeat process for shower head too. You would be surprised to see what is ibehind the screen on the aerator!

From everything I have read any kind of a showerhead filter is not going to soften the water. The way water softeners work there’s no way something that fits in the palm of your hand could truly soften water. They use reserves of resin that chemically changed the water and are recharged by using quantities of salt. I can’t see how you could possibly get that into a handheld showerhead. If you really are looking for a soft water I would recommend getting an actual water softener. It is an initial investment but in the long run what you save on the damage that hard water causes to household appliances probably will make up for it in the long run.

I advise everyone to look into the Waterstick in-shower softener! I'm disappointed I didn't know about this product till more recently. It's a true in-shower water softener. Nearly every in-shower filter doesn't actually soften water and just removes sediment, maybe some chlorine, or a very small amount of minerals.
I have one if anyone has any question. It's a lifesaver if you hate hard water though. Waterstick truly softens like a full water softener.

It's also the chlorine in water that is damaging.
Use a shower filter or a whole house reverse osmosis filtering system, or water softening system.
Dr. Gray, you can simply sprinkle baking soda in your sink, pour in a cup of vinegar, let it bubble and pour in some hot (not boiling) water to clean your sink. Never do this in the toilet or on well water septic systems.

You first turned me on to Four Sigmatic Coffee and since I like mushrooms; I decided to try it. It is weird, as you said, you cannot taste the mushrooms; but, it does something to enhance the coffee flavor. I got on the subscription because it is so expensive. I have a 9 oz. mug every morning. That is my limit because of a mild heart arrhythmia problem. I used to drink over a pot a day of coffee; Doctors orders, I had to cut way down on caffeine (he really wanted me to eliminate it altogether). I love coffee, so, I stick to one cup a day without a problem. I would definitely recommend trying this delicious coffee.

Minerals, stuff and gunk on the magnets from the water, detergents and clothing dyes. No detergents, just spot clean prior to washing. No dryer sheets. Clothing and towels are soft. Last trip to ER for steroid pack for a blooming rash was over 4 years ago. Have an extra set of washing machine magnets for travel as well. Thanks to turning me on to Korean beauty. I saw a hack that you can tie a plastic bag with the vinegar around shower head to keep it soak. Second thing i wanted to mention it's that you can unscrew that piece on your sink faucet and clean the screen in there. (Use a pliers). It's pretty gross with black mold so it's good to do it.

  • @simplynikki6911

The best hack for cleaning your shower head is to pour Vinegar in ziplock bag or any other bag with no holes, put enough to cover shower head, tie the bag with rubber band, zip tie or even hair tie. Let it soak over night. In the morning I scrub with a cleaning toothbrush (old toothbrush) and then the holes are unclogged.

Cosmetologist here. Obviously as you know, but for those who do not …our hair and skin are both sensitive to maintaining a proper ph balance. That said, as far as baby shampoo for the hair to chelate all of the minerals and such, would be a good idea however I wouldn’t suggest using it on a regular basis. Especially for hair with any chemical treatments such as color, perms, relaxers, etc. Most important thing to maintain healthy hair and color longevity is proper PH. How are hair is naturally acidic on the pH scale, so if you are using products which are more alkaline, It disturbs the disulfide bonds that need to remain closed down. I try to be cognizant of this with my skin as well, usually if I have a good natural shampoo that is pH balanced to my hair, I feel like I can use it on my body but you would know better than me.
But to explain this in a real world example as it pertains to our hair: As a colorist, when I am trying to remove or deposit color from somebody’s hair, essentially what I am doing is breaking down the disulfide bonds to either lighten the hair ( known as bleaching, but we don’t like to use that term. 🤫) Or even deposit color. However to maintain our bright blonde or the longevity of our colors, it’s important that we seal those disulfide bonds back down.
The way we are able to do this is because the products we use are incredibly alkaline, so any good colorist will finish their service by restoring the proper pH balance to about 5.5ish on the ph scale, closer to acidic.
That said… I presume that the baby shampoo ingredients you speak of as well as the others, are effective in chelating the hair because it is alkaline. So I would just suggest following that up with a pH balanced conditioner. A good line ( not sponsored at all) I recommend for that is called ‘Enjoy’
It is not sold by retailers because the owner worries about the integrity of our industry and diversion of products. So you have to buy it from the hair salon or a stylist who carries it. In the states, Supercuts typically has it on their shelves. But you can also go to their website and search for salons near you that carry it.
There are other brands that claim to be pH balanced but unless they actually tell you what the product is pH balanced TO , you can’t trust them. It could be pH balanced to something, but is it our HAIR? Tricky marketing schemes out there. However enjoy was the first one on the market to really break this barrier, they are the originals when it comes to proper pH balance. They have since expanded into a line called Formula 18, which I am personally obsessed with. It contains the resurrection plant or Jerusalem plant I think they call it. And for those who know what that is, you know what an amazing ingredient that is. But they have also expanded into more organic and natural products, all properly pH balanced.
So anywho. That’s just my two cents about hair.
You’re 1,000,000% right and I haven’t been diligent enough about this with my own water but I am looking into a good filter as we speak.
So for all the blondes especially out there… If you’re frustrated with your hair turning yellow and brassy, and running to the nearest purple shampoo… I would suggest first taking a page out of Dr. Drays book and addressing your hard water first 🥰

Los Angeles has filthy water. Soft water system saved my skin and hair. The KP on my arms and skin are almost completely gone.
Edit: I always comment this on Dr. Dray’s videos but the Water Sticks soft water system is what I use w the KDF filter. A lot of the shower head filters on Amazon don’t change your showers to soft water although they claim otherwise, it’s simply not true. It’s important to know what soft water means.

    • @00calimon
      @00calimon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

From what I've understood, that's because softened water doesn't strip the oils off your skin, and additionally, you may be using too much soap now that you don't have to compensate for the hard water interfering with the sudsing of the soap.
