    Dynomat the cab for sound insulation. Consider getting another drivers chair for the passenger as those bench seats are jolly uncomfortable.

    • @RoadToOffGrid
      @RoadToOffGrid  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s a great idea for later on! We’re getting pretty tired of cab work for now but we’ll revisit it when we are closer to getting on the road. We’ll upgrade the comfort level with all the sound deadening, new seats and tech etc.

    • @LesNewell
      @LesNewell 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Dynomat or similar stick on pads aren't a wonder cure for noise. They reduce vibration, so they work well on large flat panels (doors, roof and the back of the cab) but don't do much on rigid panels with lots of shape (floor, bulkhead). To actually block noise you need a soft layer with a heavy layer on top. Take a look at most cars. They use stick on or spray on damping on flat areas, followed by foam or other matting then carpet.
      For the soft layer cars traditionally use foam or jute fibre. I've found a couple of layers of ordinary old wool blankets are pretty good (just make sure they are real wool). They can be bought cheap second hand, block quite a bit of noise and are fire retardant. Add heavy rubber matting on top for a tough easy to clean floor that blocks quite a lot of noise. For the sides and back of the cab, stick on carpet is pretty good at reducing reflected noise.

    You should also be aware of what material is beneath where you are welding.....sound deadening pads, wires, fuel lines etc....all tasty stuff that can catch fire easily :)

    Great work. I'm really enjoying your journey over my morning cuppa. Glad to see the PPE and all the new skills you're learning. Maybe Haylie (sorry if I misspely that) could learn spray painting! When removing large springs that are not going to be re used, i used to weld the coils together. That way you can just undo them without worrying about them flying off into space.

    Firstly I’m glad your all safe! That’s the most important thing
    I regularly have to remove items that are far to heavy to handle without the proper equipment and safety is key over time every time!
    If I was lowering that, I would have cut out as much weight as possible, essentially cutting it down to easy to handle pieces to eliminate risk of a ratchet strap snapping!
    It would have taken a lot longer but there wouldn’t have been that ooops moment
    Basically when demolishing things, if anything is too heavy to handle and you don’t have the correct equipment, either get more bodies to handle the weight, or cut it down into smaller pieces you can lift!

    • @RoadToOffGrid
      @RoadToOffGrid  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s such a great and simple idea! I don’t know why I didn’t think to do that. We will definitely be using that approach when dismantling the box.

    If you're going to get a new radio to put in the original spot, I recommend the "Blaupunkt Stockholm 400 DAB" I it can be a gpd or a backup camera because it doesn't have a screen I couldn't tell if there was enough room where the old unit sits to make the whole bigger and install a double din, but this is a great option for a single din replacement

    When ever you tip the cab forward to look at the engine remember to coat the underside of those welds with seam sealer too. Might be worth having a look at that engine gear box etc before do do too much more work to the lorry. What kind of body r u for putting on the back. U can get second hand bodies handy enough. A lot of work to do there as yet

      The next stage, once the cab is cleaned up is to remove the box and fully service every bit of the truck, and I expect there will be some welding to do on the underside of the cab too. We’re actually planning on building our own box for the back. You can get lots of old lorry boxes but quite often they’re in bad shape, but really we think it’ll be more fun to design and make our own box 🤞

  • @jamesnegus83
    @jamesnegus83 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I'd strongly recommend putting down some sticky backed sound deadening panels on the cab floor as it will make a huge difference to how loud it is in the cab.
    I noticed you've welded the repair plate in the cab but not drilled holes in the repair plate where the seat bolts through. Not sure how youll get over that now without damaging the threads under your repair.
    It would be useful to explain what your plans are with the box so we can offer advice to help

    • @RoadToOffGrid
      @RoadToOffGrid  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi James. Yes we’ve had a few suggestions to use sound deadening products and we’re looking into it 👍.
      We did weld over the holes yes 😅 it was planned but didn’t mention it in the video. It’s easy to mark where the hole is to drill by putting the seat frame back in and lining up the other bolts that weren’t covered. I’ve got a spot welding carbide bit that has a flat head rather than rounded so you can drill circles without drilling too deep, I won’t be anywhere near the threads when we do it. That’s in the next video 😁
      In episode 2 we go into our short and long term plan 👍

    Glad you got the ramp open without much injury ... remember that you can reduce risk but not eliminate it. I think you did a good job with what you had.
    I hope you can remove more weight from the ramp before you detach the hinges. Maybe having a couple of wooden props to hold the weight while you take the hinge puvots out, then have a rope to pull the props out (from a safe distance) and let gravity complete the removal!
    Hope you can get the box panels out without too many rusted screws
    I liked how you put a cover over the hole left by the ramp - isn't everything inside that rain could damage going to the skip? Or are you trying to make it look like work in progress rather than a discarded lorry so no one in the yard is tempted to take any parts you want to keep?
    Good luck with the rest of the box removal!

    • @RoadToOffGrid
      @RoadToOffGrid  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes we’re just trying to keep the truck look less abandoned with the tarp 😅
      Thanks for all the useful suggestions, reducing weight before trying to lower it makes so much sense I don’t know why I didn’t think of it, too excited probably. We will be using that approach for the rest of the box. It’s going to come down in small bits

    @MrMechaMatt 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Nah, I would've let it drop too. Maybe by using a tow rope hitch and a long rope to pull the peg out from a ways away though (learnt from Mythbusters). Deffo wouldn't have been standing there videoing, if anything came off of that door when it hit the ground you could have been skewered. Let the tripod take the hit. But we're all experts after the fact! Glad everyone is OK.

    • @RoadToOffGrid
      @RoadToOffGrid  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a great idea about the peg pulling at a distance but the latch to release the door was a large lever that had to be pulled upwards pretty firmly which is why we tied it closed at first, we didn't want anyone below it. But yes, I think the plan was solid, the execution... not so much.

    The film is Liar Liar. That box will be very heavy. Unless you are planning to cut it up into small managable pieces, think about how you can get it off without a large forklift. If you could get the truck back to the yard you bought it from, they may remove it for the scrap value or for a small fee. Worth a phone call.

    • @RoadToOffGrid
      @RoadToOffGrid  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      We have a winner!! 🥇 love that movie ❤️
      The box is getting chopped… and sort of dismantled. We can see most of the panelling is held together with screws so will see how far we get. We’re thinking we keep any aluminium (the rear ramp is mostly ally) and sell the steel for scrap. The rest of the wood, rubber etc. goes in a skip.
      We chopped our old caravan up in much the same way except nothing was particularly salvageable.

    • @RoadToOffGrid
      @RoadToOffGrid  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It isn’t just the floor that’s rotten, the walls are made from wood and are soaked through. They’re completely warped. Not sure the condition of the frame itself yet. The steel is definitely delaminating in the corners, we’ll have to wait and see. But I’m pretty sure we’ll want to switch it out for an aluminium frame for the weight savings
