My dad was a lighthouse keeper in the 1970s and was stationed all over the British Isles. He only served on one rock station during his time as a keeper, The Smalls, situated 20 miles west of the Welsh coast. He kept a diary during that time, and the entries often read of how isolating the experience was, and how he was itching to get back to land. Not a natural place for man, miles out to sea with only two other men for company and a radio or TV if one was lucky. On that very lighthouse, almost 180 years before my father kept watch, Thomas Howell had been driven mad by isolation, with no-one but his deceased fellow watchman for company. He couldn't be relieved for four months, due to bad weather. When he was finally rescued, it quickly became standard policy to assign three keepers to a lighthouse, should anything happen to one of them. A film called 'The Lighthouse', released in 2016, recounts this haunting tale. Thanks for the video. Very interesting.

I just found out about this channel from a Reddit forum where someone asked what the best kept secrets on the internet are and one of the answers was this channel. So glad I found it!
This is excellent. A channel dedicated to a single "program", intro and all. Simple and effective illustrations to go along with great storytelling (Props to you for not trying to put on a "spooky" voice to get a scare, but instead just using an informative tone). You should be proud of the work you put into making this. I'm probably going to now binge all of the ones you've made so far.
This is one of my favorite of these stories. Lighthouses have always held an eerie fascination for me. Adding to a location on the edge of civilization. It seems most likely that one man was always inside the lighthouse. While he viewed the other two fighting for their lives trying to retrieve something or do a needed job, the other must have hastily gone out to help, only to realize within seconds that he was, himself, caught in the deadly storm. As to why they would’ve been outside at that time, or what was so important to do in such weather I’ll never know.
Snuggled up in my warm cozy bed, the gentle spattering of the night rain outside, your balmy voice and no rush to get up early in the morning tomorrow - couldn’t ask for a better setting for listening to these amazing stories.
This is not the first TH-cam video I`ve seen about the Flannan Isle Lighthouse mystery, but its easily the best! Love your narration and the sound effects adds another dimension to the experience.
When waves larger than the lighthouse crash against it, it can create a vacuum. Many Irish lighthouse keepers were sucked out of lighthouse windows, etc due to this.
OK... The three men were out repairing the storm damage. Suddenly a flying saucer lands, and out pop three aliens. At the same time, a sea monster appears, and a boat of eight phantoms rows up to the island. All 15 are taken by suprise when a freak swell breaks over the island, washing them out into the Atlantic never to be seen again.
Spoke to an ex lighthouse keeper on the Shetland Islands years ago? Over a few drams I asked him about this, he told me a “rogue wave” took them out to sea? He said he’s seen waves go OVER the top of his lighthouse on many occasion, I’ll go with that to be fair. Love the artwork, and atmosphere with these vids! Thankyou!
That’s a fine hypothesis and all, the only caveat being that there was no report of a storm or any terrible weather conditions that day (December 15th, the lighthouse keepers log even said that the “skies had finally cleared”). There is no way a sound ocean could produce waves sizable enough to sweep away three men.
@@dremndishot2695 Rogue waves don't need a storm to form. That's why they're called 'rogue'. No reason, just there. Could of been an under sea quake that started it, for that matter. According to the net, a rogue wave 100ft high snapped trees 1700ft up-slope. Imagine watching that?

I just found you, so when my husband and I wind down after a long day, we now go to TH-cam for bedtime stories instead if of scrolling through Netflix and others. We’re so excited to have 3 years worth of stories to watch! Again, thank you.
As this was a newly built lighthouse, and the isle is uninhabited, it is not difficult to imagine that these men would not be familiar with the local surf. However experienced they were, every coastline is different and I think the notion that they were taken by surprise by a freak or rogue wave, as described toward the end of your video, is the most likely. I did a little google search on this and found out that one of the men had previously been fined five shillings for negligence after failing to secure supplies during a storm at another lighthouse. Perhaps he and another went to double check this when the storm began.
Quandry1 yes that’s very true. Wouldn’t even have to be a rogue wave. It is very easy to get caught out by the incoming tide and stranded. Even today there’s a half decent chance you’ll never be found if you get seeped out to sea without anyone noticing.
These men gave their lives to keep others from danger at sea. Let us never forget that and be thankful for progress that means this vital work is done automatically now. And let us never stop respecting the mighty power of the oceans. I live on a small offshore Atlantic island and am always in awe,

I never regret re-visiting stories i've heard a million times with you, as you always add a lot of interesting details and fact-checks that other narrators neglect either due to lazyness or to make the story more "interesting" than it actually is.
I hadn’t realized that the bits about the half-eaten food and journal entries regarding the men’s mental health had been embellishments! I’d heard this story from another channel before but the presenter included those bits of info in their retelling as if they were fact. I also hadn’t known about the extent of damage that the island and lighthouse suffered from the storm. Given those things I’m now convinced that it was a freak wave that swept all three men out to sea.
Not gonna lie I was pretty disappointed to learn that the log entries were embellishments. This was always one of my favorite weird maritime tales, and the part of the story that always got to me was the logs reporting a storm that wasn't actually in the area and the creepy wording of the logs. So one dude walked out to get some air or smoke his pipe, a large wave washed him away, not returning the remaining two put their oilskins on in search of the missing man only to be washed away by a large wave. Case closed.
Part of the cliff seems to have fallen.. Hence the huge Boulder and broken rails. The storm would sweep away the debri. The freak wave hypothesis would explain the fate of the 3 keepers
I'm one of the last keepers that was stationed there prior to automation doing spells of six weeks on the island and three off. Nice in the summer months not so nice during winter. A lot of absolute nonsense has been put forward as to the keepers disappearance.
For what it's worth you must bear in mind that the lighthouse had only been there for about a year prior to the keepers disappearing, it takes a lot longer than that to familiarise yourself with the different sea conditions locally i.e how the tides affect the wave conditions at the landing places etc. At the west landing there is a gully about 50 yards deep to right of the landing, in heavy seas as well as hitting the landing directly they run up that gully and on reaching the end come straight back out and meet the next incoming wave and the whole lot inundates the landing. My theory is that two of the men were near that landing and one was caught by a wave and washed into the sea, his colleague ran up to the station to get help from the man left doing the daily chores, he dropped everything not bothering to get his oilskins and the two of them in trying to rescue the one in the water both got caught. You would really need to see the location for yourself to fully understand. Ultimately no one knows for sure so I might well be totally wrong.
@@ronireland7347 Occams razor suggests it probably is something like that, I mean its not as if they disappeared randomly from a perfectly safe area. It is entirely reasonable to surmise that they were washed away in a massive wave or something. Even then, I like to imagine they went nuts and succumb to deranged cannibalism and maybe minor necrophilia, you know something to pass the time.
Fell upon this channel by coincidence. Dont think Ive ever subscribed to anything so quickly. Couple of minutes in, great narration and beautiful artwork.
Likely what happened is on December 15th, the date of the last log entry, there was probably a brief lull in the storms that allowed the men to venture outside, and two of the men went out to secure damaged equipment at the west end, while one was left behind to keep watch, and noticed another storm was building, and dashed out to warn his companions, locking the gate and door behind him, and reached the other two just as a series of massive waves struck the western dock and all three were killed when they they were pinned against the rocks by debris and the waves simply tore their bodies apart, or were swept out to sea where they were pulled under by their heavy clothing.
I landed on the Flannans a couple of years ago. You need a boat with a tender as the landing spot is gradually being eroded. ..and a flat calm. It is about a 2 hour trip from Leverburgh. They are lovely little islands and you can see how easily they could have been overwhelmed by a rogue wave. So the conspiracy theories are total rubbish.
Wow! What a superb video, Bedtime Stories. Perfectly eerie background effects & music, wonderful narration at a relaxing pace & fantastic illustrations. Count me in as a new sub!
I think: Two of the men went to repair damages on the boat landing and got swept away by a roque wave (actually not uncommon). The remaining man tried warning them but failed. Spending days alone in the dark winter coupled with survivor’s guilt, the remaining man committed suicide and jumped to his death making sure everything in the lighthouse was in check beforehand.
This reminds me of the Minot's Ledge Light. The first tower got knocked down in a Noreaster in the 1840s and all three keepers died. One of them swam for a few miles in the storm and thought he made it to shore. He actually only got to another rock and died of exhaustian. He was the only body ever found.
Nice! As others have said, the artwork is a nice touch. This and Curious World are my two favorite channels for this kind of material. I like the way you present the facts, and leave the viewer to decide. Well done! :)
This comment section is more bizarre than the story. I legit have never come across such terrible attempts at jokes and people asking so many stupid questions. Did this channel somehow attract 10 year olds?
People have tried to embellish this tale over the years and make it akin to the Mary Celeste mystery, hence the stopped clocks and half-eaten meal....the meal part we know is false and in those days clocks stop if they're not wound or if the weights aren't repositioned. The simplest explanation is usually the correct one.
The fact that the door was shut isn't that remarkable and can easily be explained.I've heard of people in other cases, even in extreme situations of life and death, where even seconds count, still closing doors behind them. It's just muscle memory and reflex.
But the door AND gate were locked.. that makes ZERO sense if the dude was rushing out, since he didn't even take his coat so why go to the trouble to lock stuff?
@@HiNRGboy which lock? The deadbolt or the doorknob lock? The doorknob may have let them out even if it’s locked. And the gate may have a self securing latch. Both of these existed at the time.
I'm properly impressed. I was expecting another rehash of the creepypasta version going on about the uneaten meal and the log entries. Thank you for actually doing the research. That deserves a sub.
Just a note that "freak waves" were considered to be sailor's stories on par with mermaids until comparatively recently, when one hit an oil rig and was caught on "video" (well more of a series of stills). They're high and steep waves that ships go "through", rather than over, with disastrous results. Quite a few "mystery" sinkings can probably be attributed to them.
Same thing with the Giant Squid. There were several reportings of them out in the ocean but never any proof at all, until about 20 years ago. Not quite as big as the stories said, but with an eye the size of a basketball, you know its fucking huge.
There's just something about lighthouses that give them such an uncanny, indescribable intrigue, even when they're host to such tragedies. No matter how many terrifying stories I read, watch, or listen to, I still find myself drawn to them by this deep-seated pull, like I'm following a light in the fog. In any case, I hope that these men have found peace, wherever they are.
The last explanation makes a lot of sense up...but is worth a couple of questions. If McArthur was inside and supposedly saw a freak wave coming...I don't know that he would have had time to run outside to warn his two compatriots. From times I have been at the beach...waves tend to roll in VERY fast. If you're up on a beach, and spot a wave...by the time you reach the water, not only will that wave be gone, but probably 5 or 10 more waves behind it. So, to speculate that McArthur notices the wave and then ran all the way out to the edge (close enough to be caught up in that same wave) he'd have to be running at Flash Gordon speed. It doesn't hold for me. Something more happened.
I'm thinking it might have been a tsunami? Tsunamis, other than Freak Waves, come in multiples, and not just one and then are done. And there is the extreme case that there could have been a second freak wave (though that would be an EXTREME stretch). And a tsunami should also have had more of a sign left behind, so, I really don't know. Though thinking on it, what kind of psychological effect would it have to see your mates carried away by a wave, or even just know that they couldn't have dodged the wave in time? Rational thought would be extremely difficult in such circumstances.
I see now. Usually, people put that stuff in video-descriptions. I had no idea, thank you. I love your content. Mystery and paranormal is the best combo. The truth is out there
No worries, we've actually stopped putting all links in the description for our new vids as TH-cam doesn't like creators linking outside the site; doing so lowers your performance in search results :-(
I'm from the coast of Southwest Florida. And I have never heard of even the worst hurricanes or tornadoes doing the extreme damage described at the west landing. The iron railings twisted rocks that weigh a ton moved etc. And 200 feet above the Sea! That is not from any hurricane in my opinion. And I have seen category 5 hurricane weather. And are we even speaking of a hurricane? With ships out in the weather I doubt it was a hurricane. This is a strange story. But I don't believe they murdered each other. Rest In Peace to the three lighthouse men.
I reckon the first two men were washed away in a storm and the third guy waited until daylight to go and look for them, hence why he locked the door/gate and didn't need his oilskin. And then he had a freak accident while searching the rock.
Well what makes it strange is both the gate and door to the lighthouse being closed, it would be very unlikely that all 3 men would leave the lighthouse especially with one of then without his oilskin as well in the case of one being left in the lighthouse and leaving to rescue then from washed away and then be caught that is a possible cause (especially considering the overthrown chair) it still leaves the question why the door and gate was closed that is strange. Its not they disappeared, the official inquiry ruled they were likely sweep away but elements that stand out, why did one man leave without his oilskin? why the logbook entries are strange? I would personally believe that two men got out, one was sweep away by a wave with the man inside rushing out to help rescuing before they were also sweep away but then why someone that rushed out would close the door? Might not been aliens but then again, I also dont think it was as simple as what I mentioned.

Amazon Prime has a movie called "The Vanishing" which is about this if anyone is interested. The movie is on the slow side for the most part but the story was interesting enough and the acting was great all around which kept me watching till the end. I liked it, it was a decent movie.
Two words " rogue wave" they now have documented cases of waves that are huge and have broken the backs of tankers ! These freak waves can be as high as 200ft ! The seaweed and the turf ripped from the rocks would account for this ! Nothing supernatural here guys just a bad accident and 3 lost souls to the vast Atlantic ocean , RIP lads 🌊⚓
My guess. The two lighthouse keepers went down to the pier to fix the damage. The third keeper left to check on the other two. Since he wasn't in a hurry he closed the door and locked the gate. As the third keeper stood atop the cliff looking down at the other two the cliff gave way and he most likely fell into the water. In their rush to save him the other two also fell into the water and all three got swept away.
Two of the keepers had previously been fined for not stowing away gear properly and that must have weighed on their minds. Perhaps they went out in conditions that were marginal because of this and got swept off the island. When the third man went out to investigate their non reappearance the same happened to him or he slipped off a cliff, waves took him or he died trying to save the first two or they died trying to save him. It's only a mystery because non one knows or saw what happened.

My theory is more plausible I think Ron. Have a look in the comments section above yours.
Fell upon this channel by coincidence. Dont think Ive ever subscribed to anything so quickly. Couple of minutes in, great narration and beautiful artwork.
100 episodes later and you guys are still rolling. Congrats Bedtime Stories!
cant wait for half a million special
Likely what happened is on December 15th, the date of the last log entry, there was probably a brief lull in the storms that allowed the men to venture outside, and two of the men went out to secure damaged equipment at the west end, while one was left behind to keep watch, and noticed another storm was building, and dashed out to warn his companions, locking the gate and door behind him, and reached the other two just as a series of massive waves struck the western dock and all three were killed when they they were pinned against the rocks by debris and the waves simply tore their bodies apart, or were swept out to sea where they were pulled under by their heavy clothing.

HAAARRRRRRRRKKKKK
I landed on the Flannans a couple of years ago. You need a boat with a tender as the landing spot is gradually being eroded. ..and a flat calm. It is about a 2 hour trip from Leverburgh. They are lovely little islands and you can see how easily they could have been overwhelmed by a rogue wave. So the conspiracy theories are total rubbish.
That's what I was thinking.
I mean a big wave or two was all that was needed in a violent storm.
It makes logical sense.
Wow! What a superb video, Bedtime Stories. Perfectly eerie background effects & music, wonderful narration at a relaxing pace & fantastic illustrations. Count me in as a new sub!
This is very good. Love how the drawings give detail of the story. I just wish so much that these poor men were found.
"How long have we been on this rock? Five weeks? Two days? Help me to recollect....."
Glad to see someone else is here because of that
I think:
Two of the men went to repair damages on the boat landing and got swept away by a roque wave (actually not uncommon). The remaining man tried warning them but failed. Spending days alone in the dark winter coupled with survivor’s guilt, the remaining man committed suicide and jumped to his death making sure everything in the lighthouse was in check beforehand.

You know. The older I get the more I'm intrigued by this lighthouse job. I wonder if they are taking applications.
Nutters left and right, I’m with you.
Well done! :)
I think I’m gonna stop reading the comments, they’re giving me brain damage

It's just muscle memory and reflex.
the door was locked not just shut.
Your voice is so soothing and comforting . I listen to your stories when I'm stressed or even just to wind down to sleep .
I'm properly impressed. I was expecting another rehash of the creepypasta version going on about the uneaten meal and the log entries. Thank you for actually doing the research. That deserves a sub.
Does this have anything to do with the new film with batman and green goblin?
Jesse Heisenberg yes, it has everything to do with Batman and green goblin
Jesse Heisenberg ❤️
I just can't picture Robert Pattinson as Batman.
Don't visit one during high tide, monsoon season, winter, summer, or at night.
Boom Stick 617 I doubt that it's a super great idea to visit _any_ coastal establishment during high tide or monsoon season, but I getcha.
Agreed. Let us hope that they are indeed, at rest :)
Lighthouses are so creepy because the seas and oceans hold so many dark secrets... I hope they are a peace as well. So very very sad...
, Grubby Guac, it is said, "the sea never really gives up its dead.." - even for those washed ashore - it is merely a shell (sic), if you will :)
Maybe they got on a boat and said, “fuck this job....” and went home...🤣🤣🤣🤣
Haha I would...fuck those ghosts
I've watched every single episode since being home from March 13. Thank you for such amazing content!
If it WAS a tsunami or "freak wave" then why did they lock the door to the lighthouse?

Put this on Soundcloud so I can listen to it like a podcast. I love a good story.

A 300 foot wave was recorded at Flannen Isle in the 1950s.
I really think they were blown off the island and washed out to sea
I reckon the first two men were washed away in a storm and the third guy waited until daylight to go and look for them, hence why he locked the door/gate and didn't need his oilskin. And then he had a freak accident while searching the rock.
Three guys disappear from a cliff top island during a storm? Must be aliens.
July 25th 2021 I'm going back through and rewatching all the videos.

Amazon Prime has a movie called "The Vanishing" which is about this if anyone is interested. The movie is on the slow side for the most part but the story was interesting enough and the acting was great all around which kept me watching till the end. I liked it, it was a decent movie.
Great story telling, great visuals and sound effects. Really enjoyed this!
Did you do the Scottish accents too??
I watched this at my school because were learning about rhe Flanern isle lighthouse i rhink litterly everyone enjoyed it we loved the starter ❤
Tragic but those men were warned repeatedly that riding rollerskates on that cursed island was a bad idea..
Just an idea - suppose it was a giant wave - and it swept two of the keepers away
The third ran out to try to help but was swept away also ?
Two words " rogue wave" they now have documented cases of waves that are huge and have broken the backs of tankers ! These freak waves can be as high as 200ft ! The seaweed and the turf ripped from the rocks would account for this ! Nothing supernatural here guys just a bad accident and 3 lost souls to the vast Atlantic ocean , RIP lads 🌊⚓
I think u should ask the people who live in North Scotland near the coast how the waves are like there.

Wilfred Gibson's "The Ballad Of Flannan Isle" was quoted at the end of the Doctor Who episode "The Horror Of Fang Rock".
Karl Johan Lea still doesn’t answer the question as to why their bodies were never found or why they were never swept back to shore
@@kennyt4849 there is still a chance that water carried there bodies into much deeper sea
@@kennyt4849 that is a HUGE assumption to treat as fact.
Why bother to lock anything? Who were they locking out if they were the only 3 beings on that rock?
they went for a pint and forgot to go back, thumbs up good story
