  • If you're a fan of either Benchmade or Hogue you likely have either a Bugout or a Deka, or perhaps both! Certainly at the top of the heap in 2-3 ounce everyday carry small folders they are both great! With the Gen 2 Deka came a few customer requested improvements updated by Hogue, such as deep carry clip and fewer screws, but in the very latest model we see a molded handle sporting a Magnacut blade. Wow! Check it out.

    I think the Hogue Deka Gen 1 used the liners of another larger knife to save production cost, but the sales success and complaints inspired Hogue to update the Deka.

    These are just great EDCs. The Gen 1 was already good, but the Gen 2 fixed all of the issues I had with it. The Magnacut with FRN handles is really more like Gen 2.5 - I saw an interview with a Hogue rep at Shot Show (where they announced the Magnacut version) and they indicated it was an addition to the Deka line, not replacement for the G10 handle model.
    They are sold out at the moment, but WMK's price on the Gen 2.5 is $128 for uncoated blades and $135 for cerekoted blades - they come in black, tan and blue (weirdly the exact shade the original Bugout came in...). That's a shot fired directly over Benchmade's bow imo.

    Wonder if the new blade will fit on an older gmascus model? Magnacut RSK would be nice to see as well. Thanks Dave, have a great weekend!

    • @OGBladeReviews
      @OGBladeReviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think we'll see Magnacut working it's way into the Hogue lineup gradually. I'll bet the blades on the Dekas are interchangeable. To do otherwise would not be economically feasible for them.
      Have a great weekend, as well, Michael! 🔥👍🗡️

    I have that exact version of the Deka. I absolutely hate the scales. They're so slippery. Zero grip texture. It feels cheap in the hand. The clip has almost no spring tension and does not go all the way down in my pockets because it doesn't have enough clearance above the clip screws. I was so excited to get this knife. I preordered it 3 months ago. Such a let down. It would be a great knife with textured scales and a decent clip. Have to say, I love the blade. It's so thin. Cuts well. The action is nice too. Just let down by the abysmal scales.

    • @OGBladeReviews
      @OGBladeReviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No getting around it. FRN is not going to have the feel of G10, but they're both still "plastics." Also depends on how they finish it. I'd say you could probably add some texture to the FRN on the Deka by roughing it up a bit with file or sandpaper. OR, wait for the full gen 2 in G10. 👍🗡️

    • @coralinealgae
      @coralinealgae 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@OGBladeReviews True, although I have a Spiderco & Civivi knives in FRN that have plenty of grip. Hogue built their business on tackling grip issues on guns. I didn't expect them to fail so badly with it on this knife. It seems like an unlikely misstep for Hogue.

  • @dionpage7948
    @dionpage7948 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think Hogue crushed Benchmade. The Deka doesnt need after market scales to make it tough which in my opinion makes it killer. I liked the crossed bladed in the beginning.. killer touch for a killer vid knife bro!!

    • @coralinealgae
      @coralinealgae 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This version desperately needs aftermarket scales. The polymer has no texture. The knife is slippery to hold. I'd buy aftermarket scales in an instant. Night & day difference from the G10 Deka.

    • @j.savage1228
      @j.savage1228 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Love the blade but these polymer scales are terrible. Someone on ETSY needs to make some g10, CF, Micarta or Richlite replacements asap.

    The got rid of the pocket clip inlay, took out about 6 screws, and changed the pocket clip. I believe they were offered in elmax and 20cv but I could be wrong 😊

    So just ordered the Dekka in MagnaCut but not sure how it’s considered stainless with such a low Cr content 🤷🏽

    • @OGBladeReviews
      @OGBladeReviews  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Think I read the reason why somewhere. If you research the steel that is mentioned. Apparently someone other characteristic in its make-up accounts for it being stainless.

  • @SimonRiley115

    I prefer the gen1 myself, magnacut isn't living up to the hype either

    • @OGBladeReviews
      @OGBladeReviews  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes magna cut like any other steel performs best when it's properly heat treated and many of the commercial manufacturers are hardening it a little on the soft side so I've heard.... 20 CV is just fine in my book! 👊🗡️👍

  • @fvazquez64
    @fvazquez64 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great review! One question: is it possible to switch the polymer scales to G10 or something else?

    • @OGBladeReviews
      @OGBladeReviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes I think there are some fairly expensive aftermarket scales now available for the newer model. As yet I haven't tried switching the G10 scales of the original model but I don't think that's going to be a go because of the different numbers of screws and placements. 👍🗡️. However also keep in mind that I have the original G10 model Deka. Not sure if the newer one will swap scales with the magna cut FRN model. 🤔

    • @OGBladeReviews
      @OGBladeReviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not a metallurgist but MagnaCut is supposed to be the new magic steel... 🤔 The question is is it significantly better than 20CV? The handle quality also drops a bit but the price is cheaper than the 20CV model: 135 vs. 165...

    I'd rather 20cv then magnacut magnacut is tougher but has worse blade retention idc about corrosion I want a Sharpe knife an long lasting Sharpe the magnacut fad is lame it's not that great specially bc there not even heat treating it to 64 so I'll pass
