Classic Game Room reviews ASSAULT CITY for Sega Master System from Sanritsu released in 1990! Side scrolling arcade style light gun game played without the light gun! There's actually two versions of Assault City, one that works with the Sega Light Phaser and one that requires you aim with the controller. It's a cool game, but make sure to buy the one that works with the Light Phaser!!
Here in Brazil, Tectoy release the Assault City for Light Phaser as default, my father give to me in 91' Christmas and I play to the death, great game!!
I was going to buy assault city when it came out, but I wanted to wait for the classic game room review.

The game has a great style. As for the lack of light-gun support in this one, it's like they looked into the future--a grim future with LCD HDTVs that discriminate against light guns--and prepared a version of the game that will still work 20+ years later.

MicroChirp good point but they dont really make CRTs anymore, so it can be difficult to find a good working one.
downphoenix Where I live, you can get used CRT TVs for some $60.
MicroChirp I know they're cheap, just not always easy to find in good condition
Oh, I get you. Often the good looking ones end up working only for a few years. I have the luck of having a TV repair shop which also sells used TVs close to where I live.

One of the first games i completed as a kid, loved it, sadly i had the non light phaser version doh!
I always thought not unlike the pc engine- this system was ahead of its time and the graphics really show.

It looks like it will be a good light gun game. I see one of two things happened here. One, some dummy forgot to support the light gun and that meeting that you mentioned happened, or two, they decided, hey not everyone has that light gun. Lets put out two versions just to cover both controls, just in case.
in brazil, that game came with the lightgun! i loved it. everyone else ignored because it was "that free game"

One of my favourite Master System games, well the light gun version anyway. The wonderful land of Oz got the light phaser version :)
It's kind like alien storm except only while in the stores shooting the boxes. Used to use a controller on that......had that 6 button arcade stick....man do i miss that thing.
Assault city was the only game I had for the Sega Master System light phaser.
I really loved the soundtrack!

I agree. The lightphaser version would be easy to control.
I think it's good that they released two versions so that the people that don't have the proper hardware can also play it.

When are they going to release a master system, megadrive console like they did with megadrive, I can't play my master system games cause its rf output, I know there is adaptor for megadrive but so expensive.
I think there should have only been a light phaser version. I only understand these games not supporting a light phaser when they are released in compilation packs. Then again, this game was released late in the SEGA Master System's life.

The light phaser version is much rarer than the standard version, worth it if you can find it (or use an everdrive)
