Saw Joey in the thumbnail, had to click. As a generalist, I combine plants, animals, and geology to form intentional self sustaining ecosystems that human beings are a part of, so I have SOME knowledge of Botany .. but Mr. Santore is a proper botanist, and entertaining to listen to as well. He often reveals things that I either didn't know, or hadn't thought about in a while .. and that makes me better at MY job. National treasure, this guy.
Here's another reason why I love this guy. He's a straight shooter because @13:25 he breaks it down like it is. And even though I love plant medicine myself. I hate the recklessness with which it's handled and consumed in the psychonaut community. Because it's honestly really irresponsible, and there's a lot of misinformation that gets spread around and thought of as truthful. I'm always amazed at his wealth of information and I *love* his Chicago accent too. It feels comforting like our hometown 😃❤️
22:38 love this! So many people think anything end with a “-ist” you have to have a degree in it. But it’s just someone who studies plants. Anyone can be a botanist, you just gotta enjoy the subject of botany and be knowledgeable
Wired- very smart move. This needs to be a regular feature. Your audience gets the usual high quality content despite missing the dogs, most of the f-bombs, Joey's alter ego and his heartfelt signoff. His channel is a long form banger.
I've worked in landscaping and have met several tattooed/rough and tumbled guys who have taught me more about plants than anyone else! One guy could tell you what any type of mushroom was just by looking at it
That's why you shouldn't always judge a book by it's cover. There are many different kinds of people. The reason people judge books by their cover is usually because they understand the people they grew up around and seen but never traveled outside their city or state and met different people. Widening your perspective and seeing other people's perspective on things. That's how you get a mature opinion and ideas about people and the world. I urge people to travel. While being safe! Haha
I've been watching his TH-cam channel for about two years now and the way he rattles off scientific names and rants about human encroachment on natural habitats is fantastic. Also, the way he talks to and about plants is pleasantly naughty, hilarious and all around awesome.
This is probably my favourite episode so far - Joey is so charismatic and those answers so clear! Talk about a stylish delivery too! Definitely makes me want to learn more about this subject :)
Joey Santore literally got me into growing because of his channel. He's a great teacher and great character. A good and wonderful sharing man. Learning while laughing. Wonderful. I'm on my second year garden and growth.
I really enjoyed how Joey regularly used technical terms, and then explained them in layman's words. This made the video so enjoyable and educational. Awesome, thank you!
i really love how even if some of the questions were really basic and not as complex, he still gives really detailed answers without caring about how simple/easy the question might seem
I think he will be careful about what gigs or endorsements he takes. If you've watched his videos for a long time you probably know how he feels about all that. But I agree! Him and his brand are really starting to grow which is awesome to see!
Tech Support videos (WIRED) are so interesting and entertaining, love them, and this one might the best one yet. Mr Santore really knows his stuff and the language is easy to understand. Got me really wanting a plant right now.
Dude, I could listen to Joey the Sage Santore talk about plants for hours. By far, this is the most amazing video I’ve watched in a long while. His channel is amazing. He has an unbelievable amount of knowledge on each plant he identifies. It’s fricken off the charts! He got me through the pandemic, got me interested in my own local environment. He is a gem!
Been watching for about half a year, wish I had seen his channel way sooner. Nobody quite educates about the natural world like he does in a entertaining, engaging, often funny manner, and I tend to even appreciate his nihilistic rants about humanity. Started out with the Chile, Australia, New Caledonia playlists. The enthusiasm is contagious.
He is my favorite plant professor wizard. I really appreciate the way he just answers the questions without being mean to you for not knowing. He's a national treasure.
My understanding of why Durian smells so bad is that in its natural habitat there's a large range between trees. The primary consumer of the fruit in the wild is the Orangutan. So the extreme smell is a way for the fruit to be easily found, consumed, and the seeds spread
Do they smell "bad" tho? I always thought they just have a strong smell. Strong smell doesn't necessarily mean bad smell. Just a smell but with higher intensity.
@@justguy-4630 People who aren't familiar with the scent often describe it as meaty and rotten smelling when they first smell it. I thought it smelled like old urinal cakes and porta-potty, in my experience!

I'm so glad Joey got featured on Wired to share his knowledge with a wider audience. There's an entire universe outside of the world humans created. Learning about plants is good for your brain and good for the plants.
Thank you promoting the Latin names of the plants. I insist on using them and some friends just roll their eyes and think it's stuffy... thing is, I need to only bring in cat safe plants, and I really need to be sure of what they are! For example, someone kept suggesting "bamboo" as a low light houseplant safe for cats, but turns out they meant something called popularly "lucky bamboo" which isn't even related to true bamboo and is poisonous
Great point. When you use Latin names you actually know what the heck you’re talking about. People call things the wrong name all the name and generally don’t know what they’re talking about.
There's so many common names for plants. I hate when products use the common name because I have cats as well and I've seen many different plants called the same common name. I do like when they actually include the latin name so you can tell if they're pet safe
I went into my plant systematics class at university thinking it was going to be a snoozer. it ended up being one of my favorites of my whole Botany degree curriculum ☺️
I'm not a botanist but i am a forager. Regarding the knowing if a plant's poisonous question his answer is bang on. I know broadly what family common plants i come across are in and i know, for example, that plants in the carrot family are bad news. Beyond that, it seems as though the questioner was also a witch, and as a witch myself i find part of how i practice that comes into my foraging. Feeling like i know what the plant, animal and fungal life around me exactly is connects me with the land i live on. Start with the plants you see most commonly and identify using them a book or app and be generally curious. Here in the UK the plants i see most overwhelmingly are dandelions, dock, plantain and ragwort but there's certainly lots more besides those are just the most common 'weeds'

So like a larger scale vivarium?
as a generalist? a what? what do you do??
Generalist, ilike that
Here's another reason why I love this guy. It feels comforting like our hometown 😃❤️
crime pays but botany doesn't is his TH-cam page, great stuff.
I second this. More Joey, please!
Wired should just be called “everything that’s interesting.” Your content is so consistently awesome!
Haha
I would love to take a botany class headed by this man. Knowledgeable, factual but so very worldly. No pretentiousness. I love it.
He has some online sessions on his channel crimepaysbutbotanydoesn't
He should do a master class. I’d take it.
I've been watching his TH-cam channel for about two years now and the way he rattles off scientific names and rants about human encroachment on natural habitats is fantastic. Also, the way he talks to and about plants is pleasantly naughty, hilarious and all around awesome.
This man could talk down my anxiety like nobody's business, I feel so relaxed listening to him 😂
This guy and the Mortician Support guy, the vibes are just perfect and they seem really excited to share what they know.
I can't believe you got Joey on here. This guy is so underrated
I hope his channel blows up after this, he deserves it
This is probably my favourite episode so far - Joey is so charismatic and those answers so clear! Talk about a stylish delivery too! Definitely makes me want to learn more about this subject :)
Joey Santore literally got me into growing because of his channel. He's a great teacher and great character. A good and wonderful sharing man. Learning while laughing. Wonderful. I'm on my second year garden and growth.
growing what
No way! Botany has finally paid!
a shocking development
don’t overwater him though!
actually on his live stream last Sunday he said they still haven't paid him lol
@@sooocheesy really????
I appreciate it when Joey interjects with a scientific name/term and then explains what it means.
Absolutely loved this video, the charisma on this man is insane.
He's got an awesome TH-cam channel. Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't.
Crime Pays But Botany Doesn’t is his channel. Great stuff.
I really enjoyed how Joey regularly used technical terms, and then explained them in layman's words. This made the video so enjoyable and educational. Awesome, thank you!
There's something absolutely delightful of an "old mook" being this well educated and articulate. Fantastic video.
Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't is one of greatest online joys. I could listen to this guy read a stack of restaurant menus.
Joey Santore is an amazing inspiration. This dude absolutely rocks and I'm glad to see him increase his platform.
One of my favorites in the series. Great info and swagger 😊
i really love how even if some of the questions were really basic and not as complex, he still gives really detailed answers without caring about how simple/easy the question might seem
He is a brilliant teacher. Best of all anyone with yt can tale his classes for free
Joeys about to get those tv deals I’m so stoked to see him succeed
I think he will be careful about what gigs or endorsements he takes. If you've watched his videos for a long time you probably know how he feels about all that. But I agree! Him and his brand are really starting to grow which is awesome to see!
@@SomethingSeemsOff I'm just happy to see him doing well 🤘
Tech Support videos (WIRED) are so interesting and entertaining, love them, and this one might the best one yet. Mr Santore really knows his stuff and the language is easy to understand. Got me really wanting a plant right now.
I spent 2020 lockdown evenings getting high and cleaning my kitchen, listening to Joey drone on about plants. Phenomenal times
Dude, I could listen to Joey the Sage Santore talk about plants for hours. By far, this is the most amazing video I’ve watched in a long while. I like the articulate and focused responses he gave which were juxtaposed with his accent, attitude, and tattoos. #1 contender for all-time Botany Badass.
Love the passion and wisdom. Chefs kiss
I got you! 🤙🏼
Here’s his channel:

Crime Pays but Botany Doesn't my dude
This guy is so cool. Not what one thinks a botanist would be like.
His channel is amazing. He has an unbelievable amount of knowledge on each plant he identifies. It’s fricken off the charts! He got me through the pandemic, got me interested in my own local environment. He is a gem!
got me through the pandemic too!!
Please more Joey. One of the best scientific educators out there
@ Joey Santore good to see you getting the publicity you deserve. Keep teaching, show the children authenticity and knowledge.
Been watching Joey since he was 1000 subscribers. Could listen to this guy all day even tho I'm not a plant enthusiast myself.
He’s about to get a huge bump in subs. I’ve been there since about 25k. He’ll be at a million someday easily.
This is easily one of my favorite Tech Support videos! Bring this guy back if he's willing - I could listen to him talk about plants for hours.
Joey is a gift to this world. I've been following him for years. Thank you so much for featuring him here. This was awesome.
Joey is a treasure. Crime Pays but Botany doesn't almost always makes me grin for hours, while at the same time learning new factlets about botany.
Thank you for callong out iNaturalist!! Such an amazing app.
He is my favorite plant professor wizard. I really appreciate the way he just answers the questions without being mean to you for not knowing. He's a national treasure.
14:50 _“Open up a f*ckin Organic Chemistry textbook, you know, rather than watching some hippy snake oil salesman on TH-cam”_ 🤣😂 I love this guy.
Yep gotta be my fav part.
So true and that they forgot to bleep it surprised me lol
I adore this man. I could sit here and listen to him for hours just absorbing knowledge. I sincerely hope he teaches. I really really hope he does
Mr Santore has come a long way, so awesome to see him getting more and more recognition on YT!
More of this guy. I want to just sit and have a beer or five with him and ask him everything about plants.
Subscribe to his channel called ‘Crime Pays but Botany Doesn’t’. He has 500 videos.
This man made me realize the connection between the words orchid and orchiectomy. Love that
Seriously one of the best Support vids they've made. JSantore's delivery is super accessible. Learned a bunch and may actually remember it.
Please bring this wise guy back.
Not what I was expecting, but, as with most things it was even better.
This guy rocks!
His channel is Crime Pays But Botany Doesn’t. I follow him and get to watch new videos every few days. Totally worth the time!
Love this channel. Thank you Joey for hanging in there and creating a place for us all to become engaged in botany.
This dude is so cool and has such respect for plants, man I love him
My understanding of why Durian smells so bad is that in its natural habitat there's a large range between trees.
Best support video I have seen. This botanist has such a clear and fluent presentation of his subject matter! Amazing.
I can't believe how many people in the comments don't know who Joey is. His youtube channel is amazing. I love his brashness and honest truth. It's so weird seeing him out of his normal element, but he's so incredibly smart.
This guy is so good. I couldn’t stop listening to him. So clear how passionate and knowledgable he is about botany. Genuinely inspired!
Love seeing Joey becoming know. Been following this dude for a while now.
Joey is the only thing I miss about Instagram. Luckily his YT channel is second to none when it comes to information about plants I didn't know I needed. And I monitor vegetation professionally. Botany or Death
user photo checks out
Love to see Joey get the exposure he deserves. Hopefully it will grow his support and allow him to do more videos exploring and documenting rare plants in exotic places. Even the ones on the Kankakee river.
man, the combination of a new york or jersey accent with such knowledge and all those plant tatt's, really makes this one special, Joey Santore, you have a new fan. great video, thanks.
Chicago...
I'm so glad Joey got featured on Wired to share his knowledge with a wider audience. There's an entire universe outside of the world humans created. Learning about plants is good for your brain and good for the plants.
I hope his channel blows up after this, he deserves it
Joey is extremely entertaining and informative on IG and YT. Glad ya’ll chose him!
I love this guy
I don't know half tf word he says but sure gets me more interested
Thank you promoting the Latin names of the plants. I insist on using them and some friends just roll their eyes and think it's stuffy... thing is, I need to only bring in cat safe plants, and I really need to be sure of what they are! For example, someone kept suggesting "bamboo" as a low light houseplant safe for cats, but turns out they meant something called popularly "lucky bamboo" which isn't even related to true bamboo and is poisonous
Great point. When you use Latin names you actually know what the heck you’re talking about. People call things the wrong name all the name and generally don’t know what they’re talking about.
Can’t help but notice you didn’t use any scientific names lol
Yeah no, no regular person should be required to know that info you poindexter
There's so many common names for plants. I hate when products use the common name because I have cats as well and I've seen many different plants called the same common name. I do like when they actually include the latin name so you can tell if they're pet safe
This especially when it comes to a bunch of plants with 3+ common names and also a ton of plants share common names with each other.
I went into my plant systematics class at university thinking it was going to be a snoozer. it ended up being one of my favorites of my whole Botany degree curriculum ☺️
which school are you going to? (i'm trying to figure out which school i want to go to for botany lol)
✝️
So awesome to hear Welwitschia mirabilis being namedropped! One of my all-time favorite freak plants that not nearly enough people know about.
