This is the first video I have seen displaying the foot action of shifting without the using clutch; a tremendous help for beginners.
I always thought it was impossible to float when down shifting. You sir are a hero.

This reminds me of what my father used to tell me when I first started out. He said always start off learning with a manual if you can do that by the time you grab an automatic, it will be easier for you. I’m glad I took his advise and he was able to teach me. 🙏 thank god for those who have the knowledge and ability to teach.
Been driving automatics for 5 years, just changed jobs and they have 10-speeds, so I've been casually teaching myself to float. Just nervous about trying to float while downshifting; just been so ingrained to double clutch. Thanks for the video!
Aint nothing to it, So long as you are in the right ballpark rpm to ground speed you can downshift it's just a matter of how much gas you need to give it, If you are going slow enough to need just a tiny bit of gas and itll slip in, if you are going pretty quick you need quite a bit of gas to get it in but it will go in itll just go in on the high side of the rpms. I downshift off speed not my rpm personally, My truck is a 9 speed so 40-50 I can downshift from 9 to 8, 30-40 8 to 7, 20-30 7 to 6. Takes a ton of throttle to get it to go in at the higher end of those speeds, takes no throttle or a tiny bit of throttle to get it in at the lower end of those speeds.
If you have the speeds right you can downshift without any fuel at all, Next time you are coming to a stop hold the shifter against 2nd or 3rd and watch as you slow down and you get to the right speed it will slide into that gear without any pedal work at all (at least my truck will) some trucks might be slightly different but if you have the right speed you will get it.
@@towtruckaj thanks, yeah it took me a bit to get back into the habit of needing to shift. I generally run at night so I was able to teach myself will and won’t do. Floating is soooo much easier, I wish they taught it in school
@@moshpitinc2404 Floating is most definitely easier and more forgiving in most circumstances, When double clutching you don't get the same feedback as floating.

I just passed my test yesterday and I’m now looking to learn to float gears because my school strictly taught us to use double clutching due to the test but now I’m going to pay 100hr to learn to float gears 😂 idc as long as I learn good thanks for the great video

Great video bruh! Im bout to binge watch some of your downshifting videos because thats my weak spot! Soooo much different from a regular car or truck! And my road test is tomorrow! I should'nt have scheduled it so soon but appointments are limited! Only had my permit for 3 weeks! Not enough practice!

Thank you, this video was very helpful for me to learn to shift and downshift. This is a lot less work than having to double shift.
At least if shifting gets fussy for a specific gear double clutching will save the day! :)

Got my class A test July 2nd and I'm ready. My down shifts double clutching when I first started school was rough cause either rpm was to high or to low & I would grind but now I'm ready my instructor has me pretty polished but yep can't wait to float going otr

Going to take my Class A test in the morning. I’ve been driving manual transmission cars & light trucks for 15 or so years and thought transitioning into a manual tractor trailer would be pie. Man was I wrong! I’m doing good on my up shifts but grinding on the downs. It was very helpful getting to watch how you work your feet. I’m pretty sure I have to use the clutch for shifting during my test though but will ask my instructor on the trip down to the test center.
Yes ask if you can float the gears but remember make sure you’re competent in doing so. Stay confident💯

Pretty cool. I am currently learning the double clutch on a 10 speed and my struggle is due to being used to drive my personal vehicle which is manual transmission, so the double clutching is really getting me every time. I've heard of this option of floating but wasn't sure what was all about. Unfortunately in order to road test to get my CDL I must demonstrate I know how to shift by doing the double clutch!
Which part of double clutching is worse for you? Up or downshifting?
@@michaeld3919 According to my instructor, my downshifting is good no problem. Upshifting is where I am finding trouble due to the timing.

Hey, Great video is very helpful and you have placed the cameras a great angles👍🏼. I am currently training on a 8shifter dump truck. I have driven manuals before and actually my cdl road test was on a manual. However I been driving an automatic for 2years and havent had enough practice on manuals. I hear of ppl saying that you shouldn’t let go off the gas completely so that it is easier to jump into the next gear which is what I am struggling with. What is your advice ?
Ease off the gas, shift and back on the gas.

Woman driver here 🙋♀️ just want to say thanks a million for this information…I passed the road test in a manual double clutching then went to drive auto for three months. Now, I needed to learn how to power shift and payed the school again $100.00 an hour for them to show me something so simple. The school was good though just wish I didn’t have to pay them lol thanks again
When I went through school we had to double clutch to pass. Trying to learn how to float to make things simpler

Scenario for you that maybe you can answer. I’m trying to learn how to drive an 8ll, and having trouble. Say your coming up to a light that’s red so your start downshifting and slowing down so you go from 7th to 5th, but 5th is to high and it turns green since your still rolling would you just pick a gear based on on your speed?

So when coming to a stop(from say 6th gear) that is about to turn green, I can coast in neutral while pressing on the break to slowdown and not stall and just re engage by giving a blip to about 15 rpm and putting it in say 3rd gear? so that i dont have to completely stop and reset? Thanks for the demonstration btw

Looks like you press the clutch all the way to the floor while moving to reset. Thought that damages the clutch brake and only suppose to bottom out when your at a complete stop.
This video is very helpful, just one question when downshifting do you have to use the gas to put it in neutral only because you’re not using the clutch?

can you double downshift lets say from 8 to 6 the same way you do it but brake a little less than 10 rpms and rev to 14?
So basically whever you shift up your pushing the rpms then switching up according to the speed and ram's for that speed??
So when you up shifting, lets say from 5 to 6,, when you move the shifter out from 5 to neutral do you keep your foot on the gas and when you put in 6 gear you release it
Ease off the throttle, your shifter comes out of gear then upshift before going back on the throttle.

Who else have problems coming into a complete stop? I just saw a video where the guy said that you just drop your rpm to 10 and down shift.

Great video, I haven’t driven manual in 2 years since CDL school, in case of an emergency and you need stop quickly in 10 gear but you have no time to downshift what would happen ?
Depress the clutch and stop completely; nothing will happen once you depress the clutch.

Im trying to understand how to not stall. The clutch should be at the friction point which its usually the same height of the brake pedal? Keep foot on clutch at friction, release brake, ease to accelerator,ease off clutch is that right

No.. just brake to a stop in neutral if you want. When you're just about to stop tho. Not when you're still going 30😊
So if you don’t want to double clutch keep the rpm above 15

with 18 speed
is the rpm the same for low and high speeds?
1-2-3-4 = 14Rpm
5-6-7-8 = 15Rpm
