I totally agree. I focused on pre trip and the various parking because those were my weakest areas and all the practice paid off. I did get pass pre trip and skills test but failed miserably on the road driving. I was literally fighting the gears while downshifting. I wasn't matching rpm and road speed with gears.

It's always a good rule of thumb when downshifting to wait until you're around 5mph under the upshift adding spot. Example, downshift to 7th around 20mph. You would upshift at around 25, 2+5=7th.

You start to know what gear to shift to by how fast you're going, and what's ahead of you. After you get some experience you'll be floating gears because your own experience will tell you at what point the next gear will mesh with the next without grinding and twisting the drive line. The trucking companies want you to double clutch so you don't tear up a $10,000 transmission.
RPMs is great at first but soon you hear the engine and can instinctively shift down based on lugging or the laboring sounds coming from the engine. Slow slow slow to shift down. Hard to think about not touching brake coming down and revving fuel instead. I started in the truck first for a month... more forgiving than the simulator but first starting simulation can be a lot safer. Great video!!!!
Man iam not just saying this this is the number 1 video when it comes to simplifying down shifting and up shifting I see you can use neutral alot then go into gear when some people just float threw the gears I think using neutral and paying attention to your speedometers is good tactical way to go about driving a 10 speed.
I have a class B CDL .I enjoyed the video very much. If I ever wanted to upgrade to a cdl class A this video would be very helpful. The trickiest part is the downshift .
I'm in school now for driving truck and the rpm range isn't the same for all trucks, each truck and transmission prefers to be shifted at a different rpm. Your also very slow with your double clutching, you would be missing a gear or two and losing so much momentum with shifting this slowly

This is the first video I have ever seen of a large truck training simulator. I know that there are all kinds of simulators, including automobile simulator, diesel locomotive and train simulator, airplane simulator, and there are even sea going ship simulators.

I learned as well during uphill fully loaded, when you downshift into first gear without releasing my foot from accelerator instead it continous in high rpm when do the down sshift.

Gas? Lol. And too much throttle on the downshift burp you only need about 400rpm shot. I also take mine out at 1000 and burp to 1400rpms no problems on my Freightliner.
What I am sorry is that I dont know the name of this amazing instructor! Believe me I got disappointed on shifting on my first day in the truck. After that I came home, went stright into the you tube. Fuck ! I couldnt find any interesting videos. Luckily, i found this instructor. Every thing is as easy as I am a professional driver! I've been getting taught to float gears instead of double clutching. Up shifting is a breeze . But down is really difficult ! The 1st step just simply needs medium pressure on the stick to shift out of gear while you do a quick pump on the gas. Then the next step to is to recover into the lower gear by lightly grinding that gear while slowly giving it some rpm/gass. If it doesn't work soon enough ... your back to just pressing the service brake ... likely to a full stop ! 🙄
Hey @davidteitelman3890, floating gears certainly becomes the norm once a new trucker gets experience. We teach the double clutch mostly because it's what they want to see on the CDL road test. Thanks for your insight and for watching!
What do you do if another vehicle cuts you off while changing lanes? What do you do to not mess up your transmission and quickly slow down to avoid an accident?

Mr. Butterworth I’m still in school now. One thing I found out, is all trucks are different. I’ve been in about 4-5 different trucks. I’ve noticed all were different as far as shifting the rpms. One truck I drove in, you would press on the clutch at 1,000 rpms, hit the gas, and then clutch in at 12-13 hundred. And that was for downshifting. Normally they say rev the engine up to 15- 1600 hundred for downshifting, but once again, all trucks are different. You just gotta get a feel for the truck and listen to the engine. The engine will tell you when to shift.

Most trucks are able to shift gears at 12 - 15
You rev 400 from 2nd to first? Was taught to do a little 200 rpm bump from 2 to 1 bc you're going so slow

The instructor I have is telling telling me to shift my gears at 1,000 RPM. 10 speed. 3rd-5th gear at 1,000 RPM
That’s what I thought 1st-5th gear was 1100-1200 rpm. And 6th-10th was 1500-1600 rpm.
That’s quite conservative. What I was told is around 1,300 for gears 1 through 5, and 1,600 for gears 6 through 10 (high gears).
