I feel like a lot of people assume that a character getting new tools pushes back other characters from getting their "new moves." Like from a game creation perspective, Ram getting diagonal sword as well as rock has no connection (or at least not a sizable connection) to Ky getting a new move. Not to mention, I don't feel like every character needs a new move, or at least not at present. The best new moves imo are the ones that either plug a gap in the characters' existing kit (MLA giving I-No a plus frame pressure reset to make her offence less spreadsheety) or redefine what the character does (Chipp rope). If ArcSys rushes new moves just for the sake of it, I'm worried we'll end up with more instances of less interesting stuff like May hop
The two main protags of the series getting new moves last is stupid but what could they realistically give sol and ky who already have well rounded kits without bringing back old moves
Frist! Alright jokes aside, and for the sake of promoting discussion...Imo like the easiest way to treat something as a "new move" is if the newly introduced move both: - has a new animation to it (vs. stuff that has older animations but are being re-purposed) - does something in game that the character couldn't already do. Any other criteria feels like it gets too confusing and doesn't exactly fit. Gazelle Step and Golf Club already existed as moves in the kit, it's just that now we can access them directly instead of jumping through other hoops. Jack-o's servant shoot already existed, but the dc property is a tweak to an already existing move, so to speak. --- Another fun thing I'd like to add to the discussion as we get to theory-crafting over what new move the remaining characters. So far, every single new move has been a COMPLETELY new move. Faust could never store his items in the old games, May could never hop *off* the dolphin mid charge, Chipp never had a tightrope. Most likely whatever Sol, Ky, Leo, Zato-1, and Nago get, it's going to be entirely new to their current kit, not them bringing back an older move from Xrd or before. I'm a little worried about what Sol and Zato especially will get, as most moves have been given to cover a weakness in the character's kit, but both Sol and Zato have dramatically changed in terms of kit and weaknesses since the new moves were announced pre-s3. Anywho, thanks for indulging the text wall. Really curious to read what others think. - Your Friendly, Resident Jack-O Main. (Bring back 2d)
I've seen a lot of people ask for Sidewinder for Sol and I'mma keep it a buck i think Sidewinder would be incredibly boring in Strive just because Strive's airdash, gravity scaling, the amount of jump cancelable normals, the amount of times you could even juggle them high enough to follow up with those, the size of the stage, how zoomed in the camera is and the fact that it would probably be limited by only bouncing off the true corner like fafnir clean hit and not mid-screen since wallbreak is a big deal so corner carry can't be given away for free would limit it in ways that make it not have any of things that make that move so cool to me. I'd be happy to be shown a version of that move that's still cool even with these limitations somehow but as far as i'm concerned i just want something that's comepletely new and never before seem to Sol that make his combos, neutral and his pressure more interesting, something that fits uniquely with the "new" Sol and not them just going "Yo remember THING from GAME? Here it is but less interesting." As an example i think Gunflame is currently the least interesting it's ever been in any version of Sol(at least between XX/Xrd/Strive) because it kinda just feels like "old thing but less interesting" while shit like Bandit Revolver was re-imagined in a really cool way for this version of Sol. (kinda upset about how they killed a lot of his routing involving BR1 this patch but i still think the move is cool)
With how Fafnir has been reworked in Strive I don’t think people will want Sidewinder as much anymore, we kinda got a move that albeit is grounded works in a similar fashion without the dummy damage Sidewinder loops could deal
Anything thats a feint of an existing move is NOT a new move(may's dolphin hop cancels), neither is: a move that existed in a prior game but tweaked. these "new moves" cudda been in the game from the start but the devs wanna get every once of blood from this stone. next season they'll proly hype up making all Far Slashes jump cancellable and giving deflect shield the same properties as blitz.
The thing is that for all these characters it's pretty hard to come up with a new move that won't instantly break the entire game. All of the remaining chars without new moves are top tiers (and Zato) What do you even give to Nago or Sol whilst making it useful + not making them the best character in the game (whilst they're already contenders for top 2-3) I think they're coming up with ways to nerf these guys (especially Zato) so they don't become giga dominant
@@Kutikyla I'd assume that they're adding completely new moves. I don't think the one's for Pot, Axl, May etc. existed before. I think they need to cook something new and unique like a rope
@@xcreenplay7264 I disagree. Zoning is actually quite complex once you try to do it at a higher level since your opponent will know your options well enough to stuff out a basic zoning plan.
Ky's new SS (shocked state), is really good now. Very reminiscent of his Durandal Call in Xrd, but the new SS isn't very accessible compared to other debuffs in the game. More so, he doesn't have very many ways to put the opponent in SS, without putting himself at risk. A new move, that can also apply SS, and adjustments to SS would allow him easier access to win his conditions. Great content BTW my dude.👍🏿
Leo should probably get something else to do in backturn, the high low mix has been here for so many seasons, give him something else. If they do Ky I don’t see them making something new, but I’d like to see his sigils come back, giving him pressure like prior entries on his projectiles. Sol shouldn’t get a new move, but if he does I can see it being a new one. Some sort of air special, maybe. Nagoriyuki should get something to do in blood pop. Whether it be an approach tool, or a command grab, I think adding to Blood Pop would be very cool to see done. Overall I think due to the remaining characters being as they are, adding to their present kits is very hard, so I feel they should instead focus on putting something in their nicher states (Ky projectile use outside of knockdowns, Leo backturn stance outside of mix, Sol air activity outside of j.H/D, Nago bloodpop outside of super, etc.)
Its all the small things that add up. I-nos main new move is super useful in combos and pressure. But people dont remember she actually got 3 "new moves" in total total, 1 mad love agigato, 2 is the charge being reduced on h sultry so its actually usable, and 3 is momentum/reduced air recovery on chemical love. Imagine playing i-no wothout any of this, your combos are worse and you have less variety, your just worse while others are getting better.
I was so excited when I heard new moves were being added to Strive, they showed off Mei dolphin hop and so I kept my expectations low. The new move is probably just going to be a bit of utility nothing too crazy or exciting, that seems fair enough. I didn't realize that Season 3 would end before my character got their new move lol. Still waiting to see what is going on. I feel like behind the scenes there must be some troubled development at ArcSys. The start of season 4 being rocky as it is, not just in terms of balance but in a lot of new bugs too, also makes me feel like there's difficulties going on behind the scenes that we aren't privvy to.
i have to assume that gameplay and animation are handled seperately, but both of those teams have too much on their plate, esp while maintaining the dlc schedule
I think the best new moves by a huge margin in terms of design were Split and Tightrope. It feels like such a wasted opportunity when the new move is just Gio gets EX moves or Anji gets just-use-fish which actively removed depth from his gameplay. I personally find moves like Millia claw to be boring because it's strictly a combo tool (Ino's is a much better implementation of that idea). Pot's is okay but nobody actually likes Heat Tackle so minus 5 points.
I’m sorry but Gio EX specials were pretty major additions. Her whole gameplay has shifted because of it, I dunno if I’d call them wasted so much as not what you wanted.
@SomeSoelStice I just think it's boring. May and Chipp get access to entirely new movement options, conversions and neutral tools and Gio's new move is... the same as her old moves but different. It was an opportunity to show off more cool ideas, maybe take another stab at working her weird dog companion into her play, but no, she just kicks you extra hard. That's why I call it wasted.
I love it how they try to buff testament so often but it just doesn't really help the char, Idk how good the new stain grab pop is because I never really get the chance to do it. But I also havent played that much this season, because I dont like johnny and slayer. I cant wait 5 years until the first season 1 chars get new moves.
All jokes aside, bro I have no freaking idea what the hell they are going to give the remaining people for new moves. like, even the Zato mains don't know what they want for their new move and what the hell do you give soul Kai Leo nago. I mean maybe Kai could use some pressure tool but other than that I have no clue
Idk if it’s just me, but Millia new move is really weird and I like never use it. It feels really underwhelming compare to things other characters have gotten like Anji Chipp and even Ino.
I would trade May's 5h c.H launch and some of her damage for her to get an actual new move. The correct way to play this character is boring af. Please give her more sauce.
@arw000 What is mays identity in strive?? big ass buttons, great movement, great damage and decent pressure. What about may is unique or cool. I genuinely would like to know as I was considering picking her up
Gio's new move was probably the best specially during the release of season 3,the only downside it had was that it wasn't very beginner friendly and a lot of people felt that the sudden rise in difficulty was a betrayal of character design since she was supposes to be easy. As response to that They simplified the inputs for chave but, nerf her combo routes most notibly her do loops and now on this patch they nerf her combo routes again and replace them with easier and more linear routes. Overall I don't like the route they are taking with her and I'll rather have her be hc or zato hard if it means that i can have strong tools but, I don't have the right to complain since she was the easy character that introduce me to fighting games. Overall good chances but, I just don't like them.
If patience gets you moves like chipps tightrope then I'd be patient for a looong time
