Can you swap the casters out with a similar wheel that doesn't swivel, or pin the ones you have so they don't spin around? Might make your life a lot easier. Looks awesome though, it's going to make your life a lot easier, for sure.

Maybe install a section of light angle iron or even wood between the casters and clamp to each caster so they will not turn. Easy to install and remove when needed.

If you are worried about wind, just attach your winch to the excavator and tighten it up a bit. The gantry won't move, you may lose your tarp, maybe even a light, but they would be easy to replace compared to the rest. Good Luck!

Consider locking the casters so they don’t swivel by drilling & bolting a piece of small angle iron tightly beside each caster wheel yoke. Or drill/tap/bolt the yoke to the caster base from underneath if there’s room. There’s probably a dozen ways to lock the swivel. Thanks for taking the extra time and effort to show us your projects. I really appreciate it.

Great video 👍🏻 As someone that’s operated the same model and bigger of excavators, those swing motors are constantly leaking gear oil!
A suggestion out of safety while transporting turbocharged equipment- tape the exhaust pipe to prevent a rare, yet possible situation of the turbo being spun. This happens from air flow while being transported and since the motor isn’t running, it will not be getting oil to the bearings. Call it cheap insurance. It took 1 time for a boss of mine to learn this rule during transportation and we did it ever since.

A lot of nice work, but I am going to join the Greek Chorus on the casters: 'You should pin the casters straight, or your hubris will find you.'
As you mentioned. you have a very good sail at the top of the gantry. You might want to guy the corners of the frame down to the gantry legs, and also make some provisions to secure each leg to the ground - else you may find your gantry in the field after a good wind. Alternatively, you could slot the tarp and sew on flaps over the slots to create vents to spill the wind. It's when things 'probably won't happen' that disaster strikes, in my experience 😁

    Hey Matt
For what it is and will be used for there's not a thing wrong with your set up. The only change I would make is to put a tack weld on the casters so the run straight. Use a straight edge from caster to caster for alignment. Something to do now instead if later.
Other thing is there's not one of us who hasn't done some sketchy things because we had no help and needed to get after it.
If you aren't in the obits next day, it's a win!

A thought for moving the gantry. Take some of your 2x6s attach them together as a "U" shape, drill a hole in the ends, and attach them to the bases of the gantry. That would allow you to push both sides at the same time, and by using pins, you can just pull them, and move around to the other side of the excavator when you need to go father then the boards will reach from the back. Quick and dirty, and the boards would be useable afterwards.

For pushing/pulling the gantry around, the easiest thing I can think of is attaching a rope or chain to either side. Long enough so that you can pull on both of them at the same time. Once you‘re done you can just put them out of the way. Maybe add some hook to each side of the gantry where you can hang the rope.
You could also use two long pipes which would allow you to both push and pull. However, they‘d need to be really long and thus both heavy and probably annoying to have laying around.

when you drill holes in metal. drill a pilot hole like 1/8" first. the bigger the drill diameter the larger the chisel area, which DOES NOT CUT. which is why u gotta push so hard. you dont need oil on that a36 steel, just put the drill in low and give it about half speed. push as hard as you can. i drill and tap hundreds of holes a day in mild steel with nothing more than a dewalt a spiral tap and 2 drills. even goin to a 1/4" i pilot hole first. saves bits. saves time.

Matt -- It should work. I worked for a construction contractor in the late 70's that was the dedicated contractor at the FMC Corp. Plant in Cedar Rapids, Iowa where they built massive tracked excavators and cranes. They had these huge overhead gantry cranes and if I remember right they were rated at 50 tons. They had a little cage on one end of the crane where an operator sat and ran the crane and that was all he did for his whole shift day in and day out. That crane could lift a whole excavator and move it and those excavators were huge and heavy with big Detroit diesels that I loved to listen to when they cranked them up. BTW, that was so funny about those geese. I think I have heard before that you never want to look a goose in the eye as they will take it as a challenge. LOL.

    Two thoughts:
    1) For the caster wheel guides, what if you cut a 45 degree bevel on the inside so the caster can rotate?
    2) Why not attach a rope or chain to both sides of the gantry so you can pull both sides at the same time instead of pushing one side and then the other?

i agree with the rope/chain to pull the gantry evenly which would reduce chance of wheels swivelling but the 45 cut i wouldnt do just because it would barely help and take time to do. a swivel caster should run path of least resistance generally but you always get one that wants to do its own thing

I had a similar issue on a set of casters I used on a rig I built to move pre-built stud walls. I just used short pieces of 1" x 1/8" strap and welded them from the caster base to the swivel body. That stop the caster trying to spin on me. Later, i needed them to spin so I was able to cut off the pieces I welded on and let the casters go back to swivel type.

Two thoughts if you narrow the tracks you won't have to worry about the casters turning on you. it will roll backward without the casters turning around. two if you tie a rope to each side each end tied to an upright you can get in the middle front and pull the gantry without having to do each side.

After you explained about your tractor. I can see why you wanted to use that crane unit. I see them wonder about them. Kinda thought it maybe a little tipsy. I think if you replace your wood with closer together an or use a angle iron track those caster don't need to turn, an will move much better. I would also turn one caster on each side opposite each other too. But it's all trial an error to know what will work best..An the opposite to them on the other side too. But like you said it temporary. In my shop I just have a 24 ft I beam fixed in one place.
Does look good.. The extra longer beam was a good idea. Thanks for you idea an thought an showing you Idea with us....!!!!!!

I suggest: get a few sheets of corrugated iron for the top and use the tarp vertical. They work well at shedding water vertically but hold rain and get more heavy and baggy as they fill.(tarp / plastic sheet). Just going by the amount of rain you appear to be seeing in your area. If the castors were just wheels you could push it by yourself. Work safe? It is a much longer process working alone but your standard of work is often much higher as a result . good luck !

Matt, PEX is a reasonable quick and dirty choice but go for PEX-AL-PEX, which is PEX with an aluminum layer to add strength and a barrier. Use brass fittings with copper crimp rings from your big box store and you will be good for 300psi+ on a hot day. Standard PEX is for water systems and is only barely good for 100psi and that rating drops with heat. Pex-Al-Pex is used for radiant floors and will still be good for 300psi and is rated at that level for 50 years out of the UV of the sun. You might get away with regular pex but its barely good for 100psi and wont last nearly as long. The MaxAir and RapidAir is both made from the Pex-Al-Pex for just this reason. You can get a 100 meter (320') roll of 1/2" off Amazon for around $150. It can be buried direct in concrete or in the dirt and a 1/2" line will flow 20+ SCFM over 100' which most compressors cant keep up with. Good luck with all your projects. Thanks for sharing your videos. (Search on Amazon for B009A0ZLMS for an example of the stuff I used 7 years ago. Still works great and its ASTM certified)

I@15:50 - If you have a burlap or fabric bag, you can make a chain bag for that hoist. SV Seeker made a couple some time back for his yard boat project.

Your Shepard is like mine. She brings me her ball to play anytime I am outside doing things outside. Too funny.

I don't think you have anything to worry about with the cylinders and turn motor, but lengthening the main span has downrated the capacity. And I would have taken the specification number with a grain of salt to start with.
For future endeavors consider inverted angle iron with steel V wheels (fencing and gate supply) they roll very smoothly. See svseeker's boat build for an idea of how easily they roll.

Practical, could be tied as to withstand storm. Fitted to add to inside shop after use. Seems well thought out to me. M.

Also like a lot of people have said replace the swivel wheels with ones that are fixed. Also get larger diameter wheels as they will roll easier with a load on them. Your back will thank you

I work with wire fed machines every day and am a degreed welding engineer. You should change that tip every 2-3 hours of welding and change the liner from the wire feeder to the torch every 100 hours. A good test to see if you need a new liner is to somewhat contort the torch in a position to weld in aka have some bend in the cable, unhook the drive roll and see how easy it is to pull the wire through the torch. More than 10lb of force and you need a new liner.

I'm just catching up but one thing I noticed is that shed roof seems to be pointing right at the top of the machine, where you were concerned about water intrusion because of lose fitting caps. If I had to guess, in a heavy down pour all that roof area is going to flood the top of the machine.

Yeah I'm still keeping buckets over all the places where water can get in until it's fixed!
