    Really cool. In early 1990's I used a tuning very close: EADAAE, using partial bar chords, which opened a lot of usual sound opportunities that Inspired several songs (inspired by RIDE and Swervedriver). I'm 60, retired, and now back into shoegaze and dreampop sound in my mini-studio. Thanks again!

      I play in E A E A D F# on my jazzmaster baritone. It gives it a pretty unique sound with the ridiculously low tuning and it works pretty well for shoegaze. The band Loathe uses that tuning on 30” scale baritones and that’s how I found out

    I love these kind of partly-open chord progressions where you get a drone from the open strings... But I’ve never found these chords before, because I’ve never experimented with tunings on electric. I’ve used DADGAD on acoustic, but never heard of DADGAE! Thanks!

    • @berlinshoegazer
      @berlinshoegazer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So good to read this. Thank you for your comment. I'm not sure if these are "official" chord patterns, it's just what I found out trying out different tunings to make it easier to create dreaminess. What's your favourite tuning? And do you have specific chords you like to play on it?

    • @mooseyard
      @mooseyard 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@berlinshoegazer I haven't delved too far into tunings, as I'm still trying to improve my knowledge of the standard fretboard. But as a big fan of early Sonic Youth I will definitely go down that road. I have a crappy Strat I got for free that I may try the fabled "Ostrich tuning" on.
      I had independently discovered the chords you showed in video #1 of this series, and have a half-written song based on them. Currently I'm messing around with moving the standard "C" shape - I moved it up a fret and accidentally discovered the guitar part to the Psych Furs' "Sister Europe"!

      A studio on the afternoon sun side - on super hot summer day. Friends went to the beach. I decided to follow the instructions of the guy who pointed a sniper at me, instead.. to record this video. I was more than chilled.

    So you basically discovered 6/9 and 13 chords. Actually 9 is my favourite upper structure and 6/9s are quite common in blues since they sum up the pentatonic scale :D
    GG anyway I have my own dream pop/post rock band and we are soon going to record our first EP. Subscribed and liked hell up

      Carlo Candelora do you mean upper structure or extension

    • @carlocandelora547
      @carlocandelora547 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Angus Gray They're the same thing :/

    • @UnknownReceiver
      @UnknownReceiver 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Carlo Candelora no, extensions are the notes which occur in a chord when you keep building the chord in diatonic 3rds, upper structures are a voicing technique that pianists use where you essentially play one chord on top of another to create another more complex chord, eg you could voice C13#11 as E and Bb in the left hand and D major in the right, giving you 3, 7, 9, #11, 13. that D major chord is an upper structure built on the 9, but as a major chord

    • @carlocandelora547
      @carlocandelora547 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Angus Gray I know a bit of theory since I teach jazz armony. Here in italy there's no difference in terminology. For us the two are exchangable words and yes, I know how to build chords. A C13 just sums up the Cmajor scale since it contains all the seven sounds of that scale. You can know istantly in which mode you're playing just by looking at the upperstructure in the sigle since every mode has unique alterations (there are many with common alterations and the writer of the score can pourposely be not specific in order to leave the interpratation to the reader though). Oh, and you do not add a chord upon another chord that's called polychord or slash chord depending on the quantity of the voices in the bass register.

    • @UnknownReceiver
      @UnknownReceiver 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      firstly, C13 doesn't sum up C major, it's a dominant chord and has a flattened 7th, so it would sum up C mixolydian if anything, also most of the time you would omit the 11. You would have to specify C major 13 for it to sum up C major. and yes i understand polychords, you could say D major over C7 as a polychord, which would be the same as C7 with an upper structure major triad built on D, all of which are the same as C13#11. If upper structures mean something different for some reason in Italy then i'm sorry but as far as I'm aware upper structures are specifically a voicing technique, not another word for extensions.

    I understand quite well the fact to want to sounding like MBV but it's easyest now.. Ringo Deathstarr can grab a folk guitar and kill it! They know how to write a good song, This is not the case of everyone..

      Sure, and that's the reason why I make these videos. To help people who want to become better songwriters and inspire them with new chords. Ringo Deathstarr are great - but there are many other artists evenly talented.

    Do you have any tips on voicing chords in ways that play well with distortion type effects? What are the best ways to get more complicated chords to shine through the fuzz? I know you generally use a fuzz with a mix knob but I’m trying to get interesting progressions on pretty strange gear so it’s not that easy for me.

    • @Pretzels722
      @Pretzels722 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      the less close the notes are together, the better. look up spread triads, maybe drop 3 chords.

    • @berlinshoegazer
      @berlinshoegazer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a very good question worth to make a video about. I'd recommend a loop-pedalwith a dry/wet blend knob. You can run in all the fuzzes you want and just slighly turn the blend knob in here your clean (or even slighly distorted) signal better.

    • @berlinshoegazer

      I mostly use the thinnest setting I can get. But the three switches that you can not see are probably in a triangle setting. Those on the outside are up und the middle one down. Hope that helps.

      SHOEGAZER Ah! Yes it does! Gonna try it here in a bit before work time. I also wanted to ask. If you tried the double decker delay pedal made by vox. I got a good deal for 74 bucks on it. Its on layway at the moment. I tried it out and it sounded okay just need to mess with it more. Only thing it has no reverse. Which sucks but you know something to start with for the mean time.
