Great SCOTTS!! Nice trees, been waiting for your spring collecting vids. I had a great spring collecting season as well here in the states. Keep the vids comming!!
Great job and great video! Congratulations! To me...Empathic well organized and technical well done video; high quality indeed. Also sharing knowledge with us. Thanks guys!
Thanks Ben! Pines, especially (Sylverstris Pinus) needs to be collected with as much roots as possible, because some mycorrhizae is hidden and stuck to the roots, so for example you can never bareroot a Scots Pine... Welcome to BT (if i havent said it before!)
For large plastic training pots for Yamadori you can go to a home imporvement store and buy a painter's tray, they are nice and deep and you can put holes in the bottom they hold about 20 gallons of soil and would keep a tree healthy for about four to five years..
@@BruceLeef First you should let a new tree rest, regenerate and get used to your area. I would start thinking about wiring/styling after one year or even two.
Very beautiful speciesism but watching you struggle to move them got me thinking you might want to look in to a game cart meant for moving wild game carcass but can hold up to 500 lbs off road good luck with your new trees👍
Awesome video! Wish I lived in Scandinavia, such a marvelous place! How long would it take after collecting the tree from the wild before you put the yamadori in a bonsai pot? I have collected a Scotts Pine too from a farmers field in The Netherlands. Its potted in a crate for now.
Hej! May I ask how and who you asked to get permission? I’m also in Sweden and I want to go ”hunting” myself, but I have no clue how to get permission. Thanks!
Enjoy the beauty of Mother Nature. Please don’t collect from public lands. Thank you for the inspiration to be responsible and tranquil in this world with other species.
Hi, I live in southern Finland so it's quite wet all year around and about 17-26 degrees celcius in the summer here. I have a 1 year old Norway Maple and a couple of 2-3 years old Scots Pines that I collected last spring. Do you think 1/2 acadama and 1/2 sphagnum moss would be a good soil mix for the trees? or should I use something different?
PINES (Usually around april-late may) atleast here in Scandinavia.. For someone with a longer growing season that period begins and stretches as longer... When it comes to DECIDIOUS trees, usually spring time, regardless where you are located. However, if you have warm gentle winters DECIDIOUS trees can even be collected over autumn, because you will not risk frost damaging the newly-collected fragile rootsystem.. Welcome to BT, BB net!
I've mentioned it in a few other responses. If you're in the US get oil absorbent from car parts stores. Just sift it. It has a lot of dust the can reduce your drainage.
Some of the trees i collect in nature have moss on some of the branches. I think it gives the tree character so i dont want to remove it. Is it unhealthy for the tree to have moss on it? It is far from covered in moss, just a little bit here and there..
I think at least you should keep it in check, because underneath the moss it's always wet, and if it "takes over" the tree, it could lead to the bark rotting. It's certainly most beneficial for the longevity of the tree to remove all moss from the bark and the surface roots at least once a year. Some tweezers, an old toothbrush with water and some patience work well.
Hej!
I had to look hard. It's diatomaceous soil. In the US get oil absorbent from car parts places. I need to be better about sifting mine. It tends to have a lot of dust in it.
You guys are very lucky there in Sweden to have such material available for collection. It's much harder here in Australia as our native plants are very protected, however I do have quite a lot of invasive trees such as Olive and mountain Ash where I live that we can collect. One thing I must clarify though. You mentioned mycorrhiza as a fungus you need to keep for root (and soil) health. This is not the name of the fungus, it is the action it performs. The fungus is called mycelium and it is part of a big family of mycorrhizial fungus's, interestingly mushrooms are the fruit/flower of this fungus. When you described the symbiotic relationship between tree, soil and fungus, this action is mycorrhiza.
Great collects, like lifting a carpet! Cool video guys 👍
Wow. They are very impressive! Thanks for taking us on the adventure . I cant wait to see them develop over time.
Excellent roots on those yamadori! They should live well. Great vid and good luck.
Thank you for sharing. Its interesting to learn. Please upload more pine yamadori collection If you have.

Scots pine is my favourite tree . Luckily here in Scotland we have plenty . Thanks for the video, great adventure ....✌🙏🌲

Just throwing this out there- if you're ever in northwest Florida, USA- holler- we'll go scouting for bald cypress.
Always fun to see good yamadori videos. I'm just curious why you didnt trim the roots back a little more?
Thanks Ben! Pines, especially (Sylverstris Pinus) needs to be collected with as much roots as possible, because some mycorrhizae is hidden and stuck to the roots, so for example you can never bareroot a Scots Pine... Welcome to BT (if i havent said it before!)

Best regards

What do you us for fertilizer. It was very interesting, I was trying to get planter pots and you made you own. Thanks
You, guys, literally peeled those trees off the rock surfaces. Amazing!
Yes
Really beautiful collection.
I still have memory of your collection last season. Any update ,,
Might be in the future.. Vaman, nice to see you again.
I love this. I will be collecting a few small bonsai this week.
Thanks for the answer to my question. I have collected a yamadori pine and hope I haven’t stressed it too much.
Fingers and toes crossed!
Wow gratz, would be a dream for me to get hands on material like that !
Love this video. Simon needs his own channel!
Beautiful yamadori ... I would like to know what substrate you use in this video? Thank you
Nice pines! These two pines is going very fast out of the ground.
Awesome. I'm new to this journey. Wow. I love it. Thank you GUYS.
After potting. Can you start wiring. ..??

Damn boys! That second pine is a monster.... real great material, good job.
Nice adventure! I have nice collections of bonsais at home in Thailand.
Is that kitty litter you are using? and if so, how do you keep the cats from doing their business in it?

April or May
Yes (as beeing told in the video aswell)

Cool video! What type of cat litter did you use?
Update on these trees please!
Hi guys, did you use cat litter as bonsai soil? Im from norway and Im searching for cheaper alternative for bonsai soil
Great video and very beautyful trees.
What substrate do you use?
Hi :) what type of soil do you use for the potting of these yamadori?
I think they used cat litter in the video, I have no experience with it, but it's certainly cheaper than the usual substrates.
This was a very cool video still I think you should be called the bonsai Viking lol
yeyo yes to bonsai Viking!
nice trees guys but tell us why the kat litter ?whats in it or is it a particular type to lookfor ?
That was amazing. Good luck.
can you tell us what are the potting mix you used please

Your intros would win Eurovision
How is it you don’t clean the roots some as I have seen other bonsai collectors do and pot them up in bonsai soil only?
Pines, can not be barerooted, they are sensitive. They are also tricky to establish - so we work them slowly into in-organic soil
Yes, I took also plywoodpots, but with foil in it to save the plywood. Nice trees!
awesome trees! great content!
Great video. What type of cat litter do you think is the best for bonsai?
You could plant 10 seedlings to replace every tree you remove. It is very simple.
I always like your vedio with bonsai hunting. Where in sweden you live. I am intersting to go hunting bonsai matrial.
How long those wooden boxes ?
Is the wood treated?
Thank you.
They will last 3-4 years
Bonsai vikings, great vlog again amazing find 😁😁😁
Thanks Stephen.. Welcome to BT
Blire nått yamadori-avsnitt i år? Hoppas allt är bra med dig :)
Fråga: Är det en bra idé att gå ut i skogen och jaga fram lite mycelium till sina tallar?
What brand is the cat gravel you use?
Cat litter works? Interesting.
NETTO Kattegrus (Non-clump) It's like Walmart in Scandinavia or Tesco in U.K
@@BonsaiTalk what is the #1 ingredient in the litter that you use?
Ryan Daugherty diatomite earth
If anyone needs an extreme amount, you can buy pure diatomite granulate on alibaba, for around 200 dollars/metric ton
What kind of pine is that?

That sounds like a very good mix ESPECIALLY for Scots Pines. Roots are sensitive and spagnum Moss can make Wonders. Welcome to BT Kalle.
Thank you! @@BonsaiTalk
Talking about cutting tap roots was the subject i was looking for. More information and explanation would be nice.
Nice lizard find.
Congratulations! Desde Argentina!
What works best for me is I put the root system in water and get all the dirt and debris off first
At what time of year goes to yamadori?

What is the cat litter made of?? In the US it is typically clay...
The closest in the US is oil absorbent from car parts stores. Napa, O'Reilly's, auto zone, etc.

Because they cut down the trees regulary, so they become short, fat and dense over time..
