  • Swami Sarvapriyananda teaches the Katha Upanishad, which is one of the most popular Upanishads. The scripture concerns the story of a young man who goes to the house of death to find out what happens after death. The reply describes the nature of reality and the meaning of life.
The Katha Upanishad has two Adhyayas (Chapters), each with three Vallis (Sections). The Vallis contain the following number of Mantras (Verses):
    Adhyaya 1 - Valli 1 - 29 mantras (1.1.1 - 1.1.29)
    Adhyaya 1 - Valli 2 - 25 mantras (1.2.1 - 1.2.25)
    Adhyaya 1 - Valli 3 - 17 mantras (1.3.1 - 1.3.17)
    Adhyaya 2 - Valli 1 - 15 mantras (2.1.1 - 2.1.15)
    Adhyaya 2 - Valli 2 - 15 mantras (2.2.1 - 2.2.15)
    Adhyaya 2 - Valli 3 - 18 mantras (2.3.1 - 2.3.18)

    ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
    ABOUT US
Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

Oddly, though you say you are not really musical, the sing-song way you recite the mantras was the first thing that drew me in and kept me watching your videos.
It made me interested in learning Sanskrit as well. And I have binged watched a number of your videos and have learned quite a lot.
Great lesson. And that story of the disastrous children's play was funny! Learned much, and looking forward to next week. Mahalo! 🙏🌺

Those mantras need to be chanted in that 'sing-song' way because certain metrical constraints need to be met. But yeah, one could do said chanting better 😄

Katha Upanishad verses are so beautiful,so holistic and so full of values and all in the form of story. As you explain these verses I realise how ,at every stage of life their meanings can be applied to enrich us...the concept of faith and the desire to change must arise in the mind...And you have connected these so well to positive psychology .I keep listening to them over and over again.
    Thank you Swamiji.
    Looking forward to the lectures.

Love this series...enligtenment or no enligtenment....atleast i ensure a heavely time( unlike nachiketas father who does rituals) by being in the presence of The Swamy!_/\_(heaven and hell i see them at yhe level of thoughts and mind) also there is such stark diffrence between Mandukya upanishad and kathopanishad...like the Swamy _/\_ says Mandukya is a little dry...this looks luring coz it answers our fear..."what happens after death?" That too the lord of death Yama himself answers it!:)
    Take care Dear Teacher

    Om Svamiji,
thanks for this detailed talk about the beginning of the Katha Upanishad.
The prospect of a series of lectures about 8 Upanishads is really exciting.
I have been interested in the Upanishads since my youth.
By the way the grammar of the last part of the shanti mantra
    'maa vidvi.saavahai'
    is somewhat strange.
    The verbal root is obviously
    dvi.s, 'hate', II.
    The strong stem is dve.s.
    So the 1.du.impv.Atm. should be
    dve.saavahai.

Hearing Swamiji’s discourses makes me realise,, sometimes admittedly depressingly, that I know next to nothing of the vast unlimited knowledge available to come out of the sea of ignorance I have been floating in merrily. I feel sad about the fact why wasn’t and isn’t such choice of a possibility to become aware of our ignorance made available in our schools and colleges in the very land where such knowledge was revealed by our ancients.
