Chevy/GMC Console latch Open and Replace

- In this video I will show you how to Open your center console after the latch is broken and then show you how to replace the latch only and save over $600 in my 2014 GMC Sierra
First we need to get the center console opened. This took me a while to figure out. I was unable to find a video on this or a thread that showed you exactly how to open a broken latch. in several posts people say to fumble around with it and it will open. LIES I tell you :). I used a 45 degree pick in a little access hole in the front and pulled forward to get the console lid opened.
Second you have to remove the inter cover on the console lid. this is on there very tight. so please be very carful and use plastic prying tools. I started at the top corner and worked my way down the sides and then pulled it apart.
Third. remove the handle/latch. there are 2 torque bolts and 1 Phillips head screw you will need to remove. This took all of a few seconds to remove.
Fourth replace the part and work your way backwards from there.
This part fits all chevys and GMC with this type of center console from 2014-2019

I just did it! I’m a 44 year old single mom. Ordered part. Followed your great simple directions and boom! Done and works absolutely perfect! Thanks Camaro Mac! Saved me hundreds of dollars! Thank from Monroe Louisiana!! Candace Long
So glad this helped, great news
Where did you get the part?
Ebay or amazon
Amazon also offers a wireless charging pad. 65 bucks@@stevenamie3052
I just got one on Amazon and changed it out today
Amazon also has the wireless charging pad in the middle for $64
You my friend saved me alot of money!! I took my yukon to the dealer, they wanted to change the whole console for $600, with your help it cost me 30 bucks, lol, thank you for you sharing this!!
Yeah they told my friend the same thing! Such B.S.! I told him I can fix it for him for like $30 lol. Thanks for sharing this video!
One of the best auto DIY videos ever. Saved me $600. Took < 30 mins. Ordered the trim kit AND replacement part on Amazon for $17. I was able to use a small allen wrech to pop open the stuck lid to work on it. Thank you for this awesome video!
@@jackoconnell110 awesome, thank you for taking the time to leave a review
It worked! 69 yr old stressed out grandmother. Your instructions were excellent. Thank you SO much for posting this video. You saved us lots of $$$. Thank you from Tucson, AZ
I’m so glad this helped you. I know it was a pain for me lol
You just saved me $700!!! The dealership wanted to replace the whole lid and charge almost $400 for the labor. Thank you so much!!!
This video was amazing! Used the little tool to get it open, then just been driving around with a hand towel blocking it from latching. Got the part in and about to replace it. Thanks, dude!
Mac, thanks so much for the instructional video. We have a 2018 Chevy Tahoe with the same problem and now know how to fix it. I will order the console lock today. Thanks so much !
This just happened to my middle console! Thanks for the save. As a quick fix, I tied a piece of thin string to the locking tab; allows the middle console to close and pull the string to open.
Opened the stuck console on a 2017 Suburban (with my wife's purse inside!) Thank you, thank you. I looked high and low for a pic or drawing that showed exactly what your 5 min video did. Thank you for posting it!
Glad it helped :)
I am a 43 yo mom of 3 and thanks to your video I was able to change mine out in 20 minutes! Thank you!
That’s awesome, so glad this helped.
Just like all the others, THANK YOU for posting this!!! I too am a single mom and money is tight. I searched the web for that little pick that you used and saw they had it at Walmart in a set with three others for under $8…popped right open! Thank you so much you’re a blessing to a lot of people!!! 😁🙏🏼
@@shannonjosey4618 awesome and glad this helped
I got a rental and had this issue. I couldn’t get it open. I am glad you put this material out. I was able to open it after this video. Thank you for sharing.
thanks for sharing this video! I had stored my regular glasses in the console while wearing my sunglasses. Then I was unable to get my regular glasses! Bummer. But after watching your video, It opened easily. Now to order a replacement part. Thanks again. you're a lifesaver
Awesome
Thank you so much. I followed your directions and fixed mine. I ordered the part on Amazon for $10 instead of taking it to Chevy and paying almost $300… thank you so much.
@@zapdbeauty_bryttnee awesome
Thank you for the great video I bought a center console from the junkyard and all the other ones were $350. I got mine with the busted latch for $200 and got the replacement latch for $10.
2018 burban owner; this p.os. handle broke yesterday. Only lasted 15k miles. THANK YOU for taking the time to make this video
gop1386 you are welcome, I agree these handles were cheaply made.
Seriously appreciate it!! You saved me from ruining my suburban console in just trying to open. Can’t thank you enough for sharing!!
@@gingerwendy9300 so glad this helped
Part came in and I followed your video step by step and I'm all set! On my center console handle the only additional tool I had to purchase was a star key set because the two of the three screws holding the lever in place need the star key 🗝️. I'm all set now and thanks again!
Awesome news
Thank you for posting! I was able to get mine unlatched in seconds thanks to your video. I tried for 45 minutes before finally looking for a video. Now just waiting on the replacement part to fix it
So glad this helped, I went days without being able to open it lol
I wanted to know how to get in too, and I wanted to see what was breaking and whether it might be something that could be fixed on the handle. I liked that he went in depth.
Just replaced my latch but found it wasn’t really broken.
Hi everyone, I followed the directions and quickly replaced my console latch, but upon removal noticed that the original tabs weren’t broken, just undone. I replaced the latch but kept the original (fixed by pushing the tab connectors into place) in case of an emergency.
Thanks for this great video that covered everything I needed to know.
Good to know that they can be undone instead of just broken, thank you for sharing
Dude! So much frustration with trying to get it open. After watching the video I got a coat hanger, bent the end and had the console open in 60 seconds. Great fix!
So glad this video helped, I understand the frustration for sure.
The back story is I saw your video and figured it out the morning that we sold it. Now the dealer can fix the latch and I got my stuff out!
Went to Home Depot to get the tool and your tip worked like a charm, now to replace the latch. Thanks so much!!!
My husband and I were so happy to have found this video. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
Great video. Only needed the first minute cause I too couldn't figure out how to open that darn thing. Thank you
21 GM dealers voted this video down. You rock my friend thanks for sharing now I can fix my friend's truck for $33.
Awesome , glad this helped
Thank you! I haven't had access to my console for months. I used a small allen wrench. You saved me some money.
Great news
Thank you SO much for this video! I never would have known what part to order & never would have had an inkling the top leather portion could be separated from the inside portion! I wasn’t strong enough to pull it apart, but with my husband’s strength, we got it changed!!! We really didn’t want to pay the Mechanics to change it out! Your video was invaluable to us!!!
Awesome to hear it helped
my suburban console was stuck. your video was great help. thank you.
Awesome
I was just trying for 40 mins to get mine open!!! Thank you so much, your trick took me 2 seconds
Lol I feel your pain, I walked away from mine a few times
Ok, let me tell my story. :) Took my gorgeous 2015 Tahoe LT into the dealer 2 days ago. Had the lid "fixed" and paid $119 in labor for the hour for them to open my console lid. Two days later (today) I get in to drive and the center console will not open. Called the dealer (in UT, I am visiting my mother) and they said that the center console lid will need to be replaced and they they will call me back on the price. I asked if they could not charge for the labor cost and they said that they won't. I then called the dealer where I purchased my Tahoe (I have only had it for about 8 moths) and they quoted me $325 for the lid replacement! I said, Hell to the no! LOL! Looked in Google for help in opening and replacing the latch and found you, Mr. Smart Man! I am now ordering the latch and will attempt to replace it myself, all under $50!! So, THANK YOU!! :) :)
Jackie Braun awesome story, I wish we could have saved you the first time :( but I am glad this helped.
Thank you...now that I have time i watched this video and it was extremely helpful! They wanted to charge me $1000 plus to replace the entire center lid!
Dan Wille it is crazy how much some dealers charge.
This happened on my 2015 Chevrolet Suburban. Car dealer wanted to charge almost $700 to fix. I just ordered the part from GM for $170 and was like "now how do I open the darn thing to replace it". Your video helped tremendously and it worked!!! Thank you!!!!
Great video and guidance. Opened with similar pic and replaced. Thanks, John M in Houston, TX
@@JohnMeckert-p6m awesome glad this helped
You saved me a ton of money. Took to dealer $240 for part $300 for labor. Amazon $14 part did it myself
Awesome, save that money :)
I have a 2014 Silverado ltz. Just finished looking at this video. Mine is broke too, I keep a piece of napkin folded up in the hold to keep it from closing all the way.lol you are a life saver Dude. 👍👍👍 I will definitely be looking into ordering one of these soon
Drummer boy B. Lol that is awesome, I left mine closed forever until I finally fixed it
I just need to know one thing " what did you use to pry that 1st plastic covering off to get to the screws?
Drummer boy B. It’s a plastic pry tool used for interiors. I think it is linked in the description
Ok, I'll look it up thanks
EXACTLY what I needed. Mine was stuck...couldnt figure it out....needed to replace the part...thx for part #. Saved a bunch of time and $ getting it open and fixed.
Chris Haynor good news, glad it helped

Great video! With all of the right tools, this can be done in under 10 minutes.

Thank you thank you thank you! I knew it had to be easy and cheap! I never pay dealer prices, such a rip off! And putting the link to the part with part # was such a big help! You are a lifesaver!
Awesome, glad to hear this helped
My 2019 suburban just got stuck and broke, so I’m going to order the parts and do what you showed me. Thank you so much for this video.
Good deal, thank you for watching
Thank you so much for this video. It was the weekend and had keys in the console that were needed and the console would not open! Finally found your site, bought the tool at Ace Hardware and it worked! Thank you again!
Thanks for the video! First time I have had this problem. Good job on explaining how the component breaks, but to open it you really need the same type pick tool you show in the video. It can be VERY frustrating to be unable to open the console when you need to get in it. One thing I did after I opened it with the tool was to take a small skinny zip-tie and weave it in the latch to prevent it from spring loading back to the lock position (instead of removing the latch as shown in your video). Again, this is just temporary until the new latch comes in. Thanks again for the video! It really helped me!
So glad you made this video because mines just broke and I was wondering how can I fix it myself.Very helpful thanks
Awesome
Thanks for the great video! Got my wife’s center console working again for $13 and your video
Awesome
This totally saved me after I installed the Rough Country seat covers and the center console cover which added to much thickness and jammed the console from opening. Thanks for shooting the video. Bonus..I had the tool too!
Awesome bud
I just did this all by myself!! I feel so proud and accomplished today lol thank you so much
That is amazing, glad this helped
I opened mine and seeing you say you fixed your's inspires me!
Thank you so much for this video. I was able to replace the latch in less than 20 minutes. Thank you for saving me time and money.
Great news, glad this helped
Thanks Man, I am always a little hesitant to remove parts like this because I don't want to mess up appearance. Your video showed me everything I needed to know including a pic of the part number I needed. Thanks again and keep up the good work.
Awesome glad it helped
Works perfectly! Thanks so much for making this video. Saved me $600 and a trip to the dealership. I literally ordered the part on Amazon and it came the next day and it took me less than 10 minutes to fix!
Great news, I think mine took a 3 days, good thing I didn’t have anything important stuck in there lol
My dealer wanted $944.00
It took me 3 minutes and the part was 50. Thank you!!!
Thank you so much for this video!! Bought the tool and was able to open my console. Ordered the part get it fixed!! You are the best!!
Great news
thanks for the insight on this effort. Other than the snaps holding that inside cover on, you covered it well. My two side screws were torx heads, and the one in the center was a philips head Good stuff, CMac!
Thanks!!! Fixed my 2018 Yukon. I had been trying to push the latch until I saw your video.
I appreciate you making this video. I was very worried about pulling the lid apart and breaking one of the clips off without knowing where they all were. 👍🏻
Glad this helped, it is a tight fit for sure.
Thank you for this. I'm ordering part tomorrow and will install myself. Such a big help! Us moms appreciate you 😜🫶🏼

@@caseyking1571 great news bud
Thank you so much!!! I was looking for a video to show how to open it because mine hasn’t been able to open for about 2 weeks. I’m going to try this as soon as I get home.
Thank you CamaroMac! I drive a 2015 Suburban LTZ, but it has the identical console latch. Thanks to you, I not only found the right tool to open it, but also ordered the replacement part and installed it myself. Chevy wanted $60 for the install. I said, no thanks, and used your video for the install. Many thanks!
Awesome, man prices have gone down a lot from dealers. So glad this video helped
I like the way you showed how the mechanism works. My Silverado was different but after fussing with the hook, it opened.
Thanks for the video. After 4 years, it's still helping people 👍
Glad to hear, ty
Thank you! I have been struggling for the past 15 minutes.
Glad this helped, lol I struggled for a week
Thanks for the video. Just replaced mine 🎉🎉🎉
thank you. as others have said you saved me $300 and I would have never figures out how to open that thing, used a metal shish kabob skewer. appreciate it
Awesome, lol skewer works
Thanks for the info! Picked it open in one try. Would have never known without your video 🙌
Awesome
Thank you!! This helped me fix it on my own while my hubby was deployed!
Good deal, glad it helped
Very helpful. I was not sure how to get the console apart to install new handle.
Thank you
I am glad this helped, ty for the comment
Guess who's freakin center console latch failed? This guy!!! I figured out how to open it with a tool similar to yours but had to find this video in order to figure out the disassembly and part number for the replacement. Well done btw on this video, super helpful.
Sergio Marin thank you very much.
@@CamaroMac My kids yank on that dang handle from the back seat looking for charging cables, hence the fail. I want to be upset but those tiny plastic tabs are bound to fail even with normal use it seems.
Sergio Marin lol my daughter slammed mine down shit and I saw the tabs fly, and I told her, well everything in there is now officially lost lol.
Thank you for this video! I didn’t have a tool to use so I bent the end of a slim screwdriver just enough to finesse the latch open. I have currently rigged it with a zip tie around the latch piece to be able to open and close it until I get the replacement part. 67y.o. Female
Crafty, I love it. I left the latch out of mine and it was open for a week, I do not recommend that, sounds like the zip tie is the way to go.
Outstanding video. Perfect. I was struggling with how to replace the latch and presto. Thank you Mac!!!!
So glad this helped
Great video thank you for making it and showing what the issue is. That made it real easy for me to validate what was wrong and just order the part without having to spend a bunch of time seeing if I could fix it. We just purchased our used 2016 Suburban LT with the Luxury Package gently used. I love the vehicle and how well our family fits in this vehicle, by biggest issue is just how poorly and cheaply it is put together. We have a 2008 Mazda CX9 that is quieter and has less interior rattles than our 3 year old Burb with less than one quarter of the miles on it. Again thank you.
Phil Hurbace thank you
THANKS! This just happened to me and was going to drive me crazy. Yours was the first vid I watched - and thank you I was gonna rip the thing out I was so frustrated. Thankfully, I had a metal dental pick, and that worked perfectly. I taped the latch catch up with Duct tape, and have a weight on it to keep the lid losed (and the light off) until the replacement comes. Thanks again!
Glad this helped
Thanks for the video it helped enormously! I did't want or have time to order the replacement part, so what I did, I used a dental style tooth pick I got the console lid open, the holding the latch "tongue" or tang up in the released position, I fished a dental floss string through the piece where the inner spring is., acting like a rip cord to pull on it, to open & close the lid temporarily. You have to be careful that the string does'nt get shut in the console, using caution everytime you open it.
Rob Young that is awesome idea lol, i took the inners out for a bit and that was super annoying with the lid always open.
This is the perfect repair video. Straight to it. Extra helpful. And a bonus cool song lol
Thanks. I would've never figured that latch out. A bear got inside our 16 Tahoe and his weight on the console apparently broke the latch. If you're visiting the Smokies, close and lock your doors! I just ordered it and the plastic prying tools. $46. Sweet.
Wow, you have the best story so far lol, glad this video helped
Thank you brother, hopefully this defect gets fixed
Thank you so much for this video. I ordered the tools and the part right fin your link. It worked like a charm. The chevy dealer only sells the entire console cover $215.00
