actually you should sacrifice something before checkmate. theoretically you take king who didn't take any piece. Like Rad8 check ,Kc1, Rd1- Kxd1 then mate.

Not sure if this was done or suggested yet but. 100 rated chess, but moves are distributed between every piece and pawn. Pieces (or pawns) are only allowed a 2 move lead. So if say a knight is moved twice it cannot move again until all other pieces on the board have gotten at least one move. Maybe too hard idk.
