Pausing the video halfway to mention, this so far is mirroring the parasitic draw on a Honda Accord I was working on. That same "back up" fuse had power draw on it. I eventually traced it back to the power window master switch. I called it on the switch but couldn't find a new one. Then I decided to check it inputs.... Turns out the door key switch was stuck in the lock or unlock position keeping the window switch from going to sleep. After opening the door I found the screw holding the switch had backed out and the switch came off when the lock cylinder was turned causing it to always be switched. Before you call a module be sure to check its inputs.
Just as a reference, the spec for these Honda CRVs on a parasitic draw is 27 mili amps. As a Honda tech, I can gladly say that the service bulletins and service info Honda releases has always been great!
@@mattbrown5511 to be honest, other than the L15 engines, they still are very reliable. The main factor in play is the maintenance that people refuse to do, and that carries over to all manufacturers. Like I said, I am a dealer tech and I see a lot of new generation Hondas already hitting 200-250k miles and going strong. The ones that struggle seem to be those that wait until 8-10k miles between oil changes, never change trans fluid, don’t believe in alignments, and don’t see the importance of valve adjustments (and timing belts for v6).
Ivan it’s incredible that TSB was ever worked out by someone very meticulous, omg what a geek he must have been working out a persons every move. INCREDIBLE🎉
Donated Ivan. As for the parasitic draw, I am never disappointed in watching and learning your process to sniff out the true draw on these types of issues.
If you only have an amp clamp and are measuring small currents, find yourself a long wire with alligator clips. Use that as an extension to the battery cable, and give it as many wraps as you can around one arm of the amp clamp. This will amplify the current the amp clamp is measuring. The actual current is whatever the meter says divided by the number of times the wire passes through the center of the clamp.
Being used to a normal handbrake, you know, the thing you use for a hill start ! I am used to putting the handbrake on while the engine is still running. The idea of stopping the engine and then putting the parking brake on is puzzling to me .
He will still need to break the circuit, so why not use just (voltmeter), it can be more accurate on low currents. There is low current clamp available to buy.
Ivan, yesterday we had a fire wipe out the town of Medical Lake just west of Spokane, Washington. These fires can be horrific and strike suddenly. Thank you for bringing attention to these traumatic events.
the wife has a 22 CRV ,the battery was going dead same story new battery from Honda dealership , battery was still dying then one day out in the sun on a hot day and the wife just filled the tank to the top ,over filled I could hear a pump running continuously under the CRV , there is a pressure sensor in the gas tank if it sees high gas pressure it starts a vent pump to release the vapor's to atmosphere to lower the tank pressure , I told the wife when filling up stop filling at the first click on the nozzle , had no problem since .
As I have said in previous video comments newre vehicles have too many computer/electrical components that create problems that most (if not all) DIYers would not think to check . I know I probably wouldn't have thought to look a that module even after watching your previous parasitic draws videos.Cheers mate you are teaching us all.( especially me.)
Love your diagnostic abilities and your big heart. I enjoy going throught the process with you! Keep up the good work! +1 to the commenter mentioning wrapping the wire through the amp clamp several times! Thats something im going to remember!
Well Done, Ivan! Stick a fork in that Honda! 👏👏👏 Behavioral Alteration: I set parking brake right after shifting to PARK, before I take my foot off the brake pedal. That way it leaves the torque placed on the wheels with the parking brake applied, instead of loading that onto the transmission/transaxle. for some reason I believe it saves the drivetrain from being bound up by tension of torque on the wheels, axles, bearings, etc. That's the logic, anyway, and I've done it that way all my driving life. Not sure why... 🤦♂ If this is not the case for a '21 Hyundai Tucson Value, tell me now! 🤣🤣🤣
Modules, modules, modules...I thought the idea behind modules was to simplify - not to complicate! It's time to go back to simplifying these computerized monsters before NO ONE can fix them. It's ironic the last line of defense against this complication is a college-educated engineer working from home. A further irony is that older mechanics are retiring, rendering simpler cars unable to be repaired as well because the younger guys have no experience with them. Just cut the number of electronic doodads to zero and direct wire the windows, HVAC, etc. just like the old days. I dream that Toyota will one day sell a car with nothing but a fuel injection and ABS computer. That's it. I'll be first in line - and I'll be willing to pay more.
Hi from London UK! 2004 Accord wagon 220k miles still going strong. There are 2 features I will avoid at all costs: CRV transmission and electronic parking brake!
Our son has a 2019 CR-V. He was having the battery run down over a few days. I don't know how he figured it out, definitely without using a meter, but he somehow traced it to having some food crumbs lodged in the parking brake switch! Our 2021 CR-V has the same exposed parking brake switch.
Some things I really like on my 2016 CR-V EX-L 1. Naturally aspirated 2.4 L Engine. 2. Mechanical Parking Brake. 3. No Lane departure sensors, my wife's 2018 Accord drives me crazy with that. I'm like I didn't depart the lane, it departed me. 4. It is a Honda CR-V this is my third one. I totaled an '05 one, I turned my 2012 over to my granddaughter at her 16th birthday, and now drive a 2016. I'm not real wild about the continuously variable tranny, but so far so good. The one in the 2018 Accord has given us no trouble either for that matter.
My wife and I own a 2017 and a 2019 CRV Touring trim level Honda's. On cold days in SC the "infotainment system" sometimes would not boot up when starting the cars. The local Honda dealer is typical of most Honda dealers; they gave us a lot of run around and grief. They tried "reprogramming" the units but we still had occasional booting issues, which required restarting the cars. And I made sure they gave our Honda's extra attention before the original factory warranty ran out. The Honda battery, which is made by Jonson Controls, were also being replaced by me or the dealership, frequently. So, I put NAPA Group 35 batteries in both cars and haven't had any issues since. My theory is that the voltage was dropping so low over night in those smaller, less amperage batteries causing the systems to go into a deep sleep to save the battery. Honda puts Group 35 batteries in vehicles sold in Canada and most northern states. Using a Group 35 battery with the higher amperage may solve some of the module issues. Just make sure the battery fits the battery tray and is not too tall. The electrical system is going to draw only what is needs and there will be plenty of reserve.
The same thing happens in several towns in California in the last couple of years. Towns were completely wiped off the map. Cars. houses, stores, people. Sad for all towns or cities hit by wildfires.
Wow, it's nice to see TSB to figure out the problem! At least you know what to do abs ask what the exact sequence for braking etc. Nice job, Ivan. Let's see part 2 of the fix!!
Very worthy cause, Ivan! I feel deeply for the families in Lahaina, particularly the children that were safe in school and were sent to certain death - what I feel about what happened and why, I cannot say in your channel. Talk about weird - when a software bug creates a parasitic draw, that isn't even obvious, who pays for the ruined batteries and the shop time to figure it out? Should be the manufacturer! On to part 2, to see how it all works out.
I use the cardaq+3 and have multiple oe scan tools on my laptop, you know with Ford the fdrs is web based and downloads the programming automatically by the vin, well i bricked an srs module a while back coz they downloaded the incorrect software for the bronco, luckily it was all documented step by step coz of my job requirements
IVAN, what your friend is doing is great BUT tell him to check with his tax man. EVEN IF HE GIVES ALL THE MONEY AWAY, HE MAY HAVE TO SHOW IT AS PERSONAL INCOME AND BE TAXED ON ALL OF IT. I think he needs to be a NONPROFIT to do what he wants to do. I am not absolutely certain about this, but I think I'm right. It would be terrible for him to do something great and then be on the hook for a gigantic tax bill. PLEASE be careful.
Can you imagine your government officials blocking the roads to escape? Can you imagine no sirens for warning you. Can you imagine shutting down donation centers. Can you imagine no red cross, no FEMA?
Have you considered using a voltmeter with microvolt resolution for measuring the drops across fuses ? A 10A fuse has about 7mv/amp , so with a microvolt resolution you could get an accurate read on milliamps passing through a fuse.
As I commented before. I really really do not understand, why there are not an main relay, turning off all modules, which do not need power, when car is off. There would not be an problem if an shutdown signal would be sent to CAN networks at 120 seconds or whatever and leave 60 seconds to modules turn off, before main relay turns off. You could even specify an CAN command "request to keep main power on" if really needed and then log that as informational P -code. 90% of the problem would be eliminated and if there is something left, you can find the culprit by scanning codes or checking the few always on modules. With current amount of not so great program code and cheap electronics, everything else is asking for problems. And instead of always on power for keepalive power, you can use NVRAM (non volatile ram). Even commercial passenger planes have a main battery switch, and those electronics and program code is 10-100 time more expensive compared to cars.
One thought. That main relay becomes a failure point possibly preventing the car from starting / running. When only one module fails, it usually doesn't take down the whole car. If the master switch or relay fails in an airplane, the engine will still start and run.
@@major__kong Plus airplanes have redundant everything onboard. Most of their systems exist twice or even 3 times for redundancy. If a system fails, it usually reverts to its backup automatically or manually. No car has redundant systems for cost savings...
I had an 04 crv p. draw, it was the hatch switch in the d. side door. Someone had opened it and removed/lost the return spring, so the button was always closed cuircut...
Itb is actually good you were able to find a TSB & confirm with your customer the hand brake process and were able to replicate the issue. I honestly think if the TSB were not published you would have found the issue. As we all saw, eventually it did come down to 11mA repeatedly. What a bugger of a process to create for the parasitic draw. I am amazed someone was able to determine it in the first place - it almost seems like a chance find by whoever identified how it occurs.
Have you had to replace the fuses on that meter yet? I have the same one and blew them checking draw, but couldn't find replacements. When I worked on Hondas we used to start by pulling the backup fuse (99%of draws) then disconnected home link, master switch, rear latch and sliding door controllers after that.
I have a 2017 Honda CR-V & I am having this exact issue! I have had the battery replaced about 5 times & I have taken it to the dealership on multiple occasions. They would complete a thorough diagnostic; checking the charging system & never could find an issue. It would aggravate me because I know there was an issue. I would have to carry around a jump box within my car just so that I could start the car when the new battery would start to drain, (which took around 7-8 months). I am going to the dealership on Tuesday & giving them this information. I want this issue resolved!
Look at the charging system as it can discharge the battery as you drive. I found that turning the headlights on charged the battery... I'm looking at the battery charge unit on the negative pole as they'd have made over a million dud ones.
Great job! I was betting on the window controls. My wife's CR-V rolls its windows down on its own, and the rain comes in on the switches. Well, it seems to roll the windows down on its own - pressing the unlock button twice and holding it the second time is what rolls down the windows. With the keys resting in the bottom of her purse and stuff on top of them, it sometimes presses the unlock button twice and holds it. As unlikely as it seems, this has happened at least 3 times.
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away I used to work on photocopiers. There was one copier made by Savin that would go crazy if you selected certain options in a specific order. Select them in any other order and it worked fine. I can still remember reading the 'TSB' from Savin on that wondering what poor technician got stuck figuring that one out.
Electronic parking brake is what we got because people couldn't pull the mechanical parking brake properly. I did see a few years ago in the early years of the EPB that Subaru had a bug where the car automatically could release the parking brake. I just hope that all those cars have been updated by now.
Personally when you said you thought the 67mA draw was the problem, I was not so sure myself. Even it if was excessive, I would have expected it to take at least a few weeks to draw the battery down.
Thanks for sharing your approach. I have a 14 CRV to investigate a battery drain. Im not an expert so Im trying to understand how you can place your multimeter leads in series with the battery without disconnecting from the car. And if you do disconnect wouldn’t you lose the fault causing a module to draw power by resetting it?
Hey Ivan I hope you see this. Long time subscriber. My Coworker has a 2008 CRV. His temp gauge is moving up and down he told me. Sporadically. No drive-ability issues. I'm going to see him Friday. How would you go about looking at that? If you have the time to tell me that is. lol
Wow, I can't believe it. My battery charge has been dying with a new battery and new alternator, maybe this is what caused my problem. I normally set the emergency brake before turning off the engine, but maybe I've been doing it after recently. Thanks!
Isn’t that why insurance is available for purchase? Why should risk takers be rewarded? I once was broadsided by an uninsured lady, my insurance totaled my vehicle, wrote me a check, i bought a new vehicle. Should I have split my check with the lady? Decisions have consequences, bailing folks out of their bad decisions just keeps them making bad decisions
I know honda has a service bulliten out for updating i think the ABS module for the parasitic drain or the ECM for something with the evap system, hope it helps, its been a year or 2
So now even "simple" vehicles can have software bugs. I suppose it would have been nice if this vehicle supported over the air updates, and then Honda could have just pushed the update to the effected vehicles without a whole process to diagnose. Makes me wonder if later model vehicles (complex) that do not yet support OTA updates will become the most troublesome to own/operate in the out years.
Every video I've seen of yours is totally fantastic, unfortunately I live in Sheffield UK. Otherwise I'd be straight round to see you to fix my bmw e60 parasitic battery drain, you don't fancy a trip/holiday to the UK do ya.
I was wondering about the 60ma draw. I would think that would take a few weeks to pull enough AH out of the battery to cause the little 1.5 to not crank.
I think I've watched almost every video but I don't remember ever seeing you go through your tool list or why you chose/have them? Why I wonder this is, I see you using that old pocket multimeter all the time? Is it of sentimental value? Because I don't see anything "special" about it in build/function otherwise? The Beckman Industrial DM78.
It's all of them. There's only 3 or so battery manufacturers left in North America or something like that. They're all the same battery with different branding.
hey so i’m having a similar problem with my 2016 crv and i’ve taken it to the honda mechanics and they’re saying they want me to spend 900 dollars to replace part of the front driver side door but they’re not sure if that’ll work. they seem to want me to spend a lot of money for trouble shooting. is that reasonable or are they ripping me off?
Ivan could you use the hand held wireless device for this situation to save you from walking around the vehicle so much? I'm talking about the cool device you showed a while back that would graph the parasitic draw.
What year did cars start getting difficult to diagnose. My 2002 Jeep Wrangler is easy but if I want to buy a new truck what year should I go back to (at the least). I want a 3/4 ton 4x4 truck with manual transmission and manual locking front hubs with an engine that is rebuildable
Why an electronic parking brake? What’s wrong with a cable operated system? How many times have you driven home with a hydraulic system issue by using the “emergency” brake. Impossible now because you can’t engage the EBS while the car is moving.

Great video, Thanks for sharing! That's a great Tsb to keep in the back of your mind!
Thank goodness for TSB's
Luckily MOST cars and homes are insured. They still need some help though
Very interesting and thank you for sharing this video!
Electronic parking brake is what we got because people couldn't pull the mechanical parking brake properly.
I did see a few years ago in the early years of the EPB that Subaru had a bug where the car automatically could release the parking brake. I just hope that all those cars have been updated by now.
Good idea for sharing the Lahina car donation go-fund-me. I just sent some money. Good on you, Ivan.
@thanks for this beautiful knowledge shared, always loved your videos!
I agree
Are the leads you use for the dvom from a scope? Or were you get them
I know honda has a service bulliten out for updating i think the ABS module for the parasitic drain or the ECM for something with the evap system, hope it helps, its been a year or 2
So now even "simple" vehicles can have software bugs.
Part one was totally awesome too i must say
Every video I've seen of yours is totally fantastic, unfortunately I live in Sheffield UK. Otherwise I'd be straight round to see you to fix my bmw e60 parasitic battery drain, you don't fancy a trip/holiday to the UK do ya.
in my last four cars with an electronic parking brake -it engages automatically when the engine is switched off.
Thanks for you vidéo 👍
I want a low milage 2012 to 2014 Honda CRV I had one and my daughter totaled it :( but the prices are so high i have not replaced it yet :( Poor me :)
I was wondering about the 60ma draw. I would think that would take a few weeks to pull enough AH out of the battery to cause the little 1.5 to not crank.
Seems these 1.5 turbos in the Civic and the CRV, have multiple parking brake function errors. (often a cause for P0229)
Thanks Ivan!
Mazda 626 Air con dash switch didn't turn of air con clutch resulted in flat battery in a day, key out and off found draw on relay to air con.
It just works well and I trust it 😁
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics as good an answer as there is. Thanks for the reply.
Love your channel!
You are a PRO!
If you use a milliamp.clamp meter then you can still measure current without disconnecting cables !
Intermittent draws are so much fun!
My first thought is, did the owner bring the vehicle to the dealer before PHAD? Have any other places attempted the repair?
I purchased the 2017 CRV on 2017. Today, the third time, my battery dead. I have to replace its battery roughly every two and a half years …
Did adding these new lights reduce the brightness of the original taillights ?
Since when did Diehard become not a great brand? I swore by those for over 20 years when they were Sears product.
It's all of them. There's only 3 or so battery manufacturers left in North America or something like that. They're all the same battery with different branding.
Like all engineering, software engineering's first rule is "garbage in equals garbage out". That issue should have never made it past the R&D stage.
hey so i’m having a similar problem with my 2016 crv and i’ve taken it to the honda mechanics and they’re saying they want me to spend 900 dollars to replace part of the front driver side door but they’re not sure if that’ll work. they seem to want me to spend a lot of money for trouble shooting. is that reasonable or are they ripping me off?
Ivan could you use the hand held wireless device for this situation to save you from walking around the vehicle so much? I'm talking about the cool device you showed a while back that would graph the parasitic draw.
Yes, he mentioned that around 13:30
Key Takeaway:
"Usually less than 10 milliamps (mA) of current, SOMETIMES 20"
Hey buddy how can I get a relay diagram for the 2016 jaguar xe 4 cylinder. 2.0l
When a module draw is suspected, then the first diagnostic tool should be your thermocamera.
Good luck finding a 66mA draw with the thermal camera. Most modules are hidden in the car btw 😉
Great Video! I'll subscribe!
As a general rule, if it has push button start, then there are too many computers 😅
Why an electronic parking brake? What’s wrong with a cable operated system? How many times have you driven home with a hydraulic system issue by using the “emergency” brake. Impossible now because you can’t engage the EBS while the car is moving.
Exactly. Electronic parking brake is a worthless piece of crap invention in my humble opinion 😆
Hello pine-hollow I have a 2015 4.3ltr v-6 with a p0011 code that keeps coming up ( my oil changes are consistent and I have a new oil pump help) please
Uhhh what car?
Another reason to hate electric parking break
I don't mean to be insensitive, but over the last 20 years, I have forked over probably $30,000 for insurance in case a fire took away everything I owned.
Maybe I should have some kind of GoFundMe thing so I can pay my next insurance bill.
What was wrong with a cable actuated parking brake??
The lever took up precious center console space 🤣
🙏great work
how is our tester hooke mine up the wvideos have shown nanddordsnt give me a draw reading jut bought a neq tester thinking my older one isnt working right
While i fully support fundraising from individuals, i feel that the state and federal government completely dropped the ball on this one. A Katrina repeat except in a different state and conditions. Then it was announced that each family, family not each person, will get $700?! Is this a joke?!? How many billions have we given Ukraine so far and each family in HI get $700.
Riiiiight
Hawaii hade a fire ....
waay too many modules on new vehicles....THAT is the problem
Gotta love the modern technology in these cars.
Love is such a strong word............. Please try again.😉
@@rodx5571 you missed the sarcasm.
i tought Honda never break....
Personally own Honda's like 6 of them, Machines do break once in awhile, Some more often, So far since 2001 hasn't been bad.🤫
👍
The computer garbage craze, be environmentally smart and buy a proper made car with a mechanical handbrake, the modern garbage only good for filling dumpsters with chincy parts and emptying owners savings accounts in the process lol .
Hopefully TSB made this one easy, So many variable with software programming flaws it can be close to impossible nail issue efficiently from testing alone .
ALSO.. imagine the deliberate disaster happening to the people of Ukraine under attack by a modern day hitler..... 🇺🇦
🤦♂️
That's crazy what a silly design
