@@bruwin PERFECT!! I can tell you from 50+ years of carburetion and tuning experience; that many a good carburetor (ALL Brands) have been ruined by people "fixing them" or "tuning them". The engine does not "run right", so it has to be a "bad carburetor", Right? After all the carburetor was the first thing you saw when you opened the hood. It has to be "bad". As Puddin says, "don't worry about that cylinder with low compression" . . . . or a worn out cam lobe . . . or a bent pushrod . . . . or 50 leaky vacuum lines . . . or fouled plugs . . . . or some other ignition problem. After all, It just HAS TO BE the carburetor that is causing the issue. You are correct, the Q-Jet "learning curve" is a bit difficult, compounded by the fact that the darn things work for hundreds of thousands of miles and never need "Fixed". GM literally installed these things by the MILLIONS every year; for DECADES! I would bet that if you looked at the manufacturing numbers, that a majority of cars and trucks in the late 60's,early 70's, right up into the early EFI era had some sort of Q-Jet carburetor on top. Ford even used the Q-Jet on some 460 Lincolns for a short time. Carter went as far as developing and manufacturing the AVS as their own "in house" answer to the Q-Jet. Chrysler used the AVS on many of their larger V-8 engines. Holley even jumped into the game with the "Spread Bore", Q-Jet replacement, which as I remember was a 750 CFM. Puddin working on that Q-Jet took me back to my high school days when I actually learned the ins and outs of the Q-Jet. I was a great trip down memory lane, that is why I love his content and his channel.
I was always taught to use compressed air in the spark plug holes to keep the valves from dropping, while changing the seals. Derek from Vice Grip Garage sells hood re-enforcement brackets for those square body PU trucks, . You should really consider ordering a couple so your hood doesn't taco, Good to go Gentlemen!
The carburetor drips from its base in the intake, causing the rings to wash up and causing oil to burn through. On the base there is 2 plugs , they need to be cleaned up and reseal with epoxy. It also causes the engine to take longer to start after a few days without starting it.
Gm tilt columns have a pot metal swivel that goes from that mechanical side of the ignition switch to the rod that pushes on the electrical side of the ignition switch, and they are known for breaking. Make sure the rod on the replace column you get moves with the key or youll be in the same boat.
I still have the tools that make taking apart that GM Tilt column easier and quicker. It was a good design that just needed a few drops of LOCTITE on those screws that notoriously loosen up and cause the column to flop around. Not to mention those cheap "pot metal" rack and gears for the switch.
Puddin that truck is looking good. There is a fresh air intake hose for the air cleaner that goes to the Radiator support. Get a steering column at the Junkyard.
Little trick is shove small rope in each cylinder and turn the engine by hand until tight. Put all u can in it and it won’t let the valves drop then just pull it out when done and go to the next 1. Love the content brother!!
On most car channels, just as soon as you fired that truck up , they go to the road and try to smoke both tires down. The first left hand turn they take it at 45 , and throw the battery across the engine bay. And burn the trans up. I like that you take care of stuff.
You can set the piston so it's coming back up, then feed some nylon rope through the spark plug hole, as much as you can, then turn the motor over by hand until the piston presses up against the rop e, that'll stop the valves dropping 😁

The engine sounds strong and smooth - check timing and dwell for final tuning. The valves are super quiet. - good job Bill. The oil will burn off around the valves and smoke will clear up. Change the oil, run straight 30. Remove the column and have it rebuilt. Take your time and enjoy the process. This old truck needs lots of maintenance and repairs. The final product will come out amazing in due time.
@NoWr2Run I'm with ya I love learning new things. As long as they have flat tappet cams 15w40 can be used . It's just all around a better quality an more forgiving on older V8's .
The GMC is lookin good puddin! I usually use a utility knif e on old hoses that you are going to replace and cut a slit in them where they are connected at and you can just peel the hose off easily then. (heater hose on the radiator)
Seafoam works very well at cleaning upper cylinders of carbon and sludge like Berryman Seafoam was invented by a mechanic in Minnesota around 1942 at a Buick dealer and it won't hurt 😊
What an awesome truck. Great to show people what they can build on a low budget. I also like how you pretended to be absent minded; starting it in reverse, forgetting to tighten a hose and a brake line, then finally leaving the the cap on the master cylinder loose, all done to drive home the importance of double checking your work. That was so selfeless of you. Good job!
Even thou the returns look ok on top, the oil returns can still be blocked. The head gaskets kinda half cover the returns. All you need to do is get a foot long piece of 3/16-1/4 inch winch cable, chuck it in a drill and feed it down the return holes. Clears the sludge out and "trims" the gaskets. I did this bunches of times. Don't worry about the engine turning over when you pressurize the cylinder. It ain't gonna hurt anything, just keep the pressure on till you get the keepers back in. I worked on Chevy engines for 47 years. Put the A/C stuff back on, that's the easiest system to work on that GM made. Put some air pressure in it. Probably find the condenser has a small hole in it. You can charge the system with r134 with out doing anything but adding the service port convertors.
Also back in their 70's vehicles they ran the best a/c compressors on the market, good old Frigidaire, My '71 Chevelle blew 31 degrees out the panel and crotch cooling vents all the time with R-12 in it. was fun getting friends to ride with me, all windows up and breathing steam out yer mouth. Was like stepping into the freezer box on yer Frigidaire freezer.

Filling the combustion chamber with some paracord through the sparkplug hole holds the valves up without the chance of the air pushing the piston down. Just be sure to leave some hanging out the sparkplug hole.
I did the same job you guys are doing and I had an old timer teach me a trick that works extremely well since you’ve already got the spark plug pulled out you take a piece of clothesline and you stuff it in the spark plug hole is best you can and then you runthe rod all the way upper piston and it keeps pressure on the valve and then you can do what you want and it’s harder to push the valve down by accident whenever you’re trying to put the keepers back in
yea a couple of fella's down in the comments got it right was taught in high school engine class about the rope trick to hold the valves up way to go puddin and bill and merry christmas to puddin's family and bill as well love the video's
We just did the head gaskets in our 66 Impala last week. We thought it was valve guide seals because of the smoke coming and going. Turned out to be a small crack in the gasket. The wife did an awesome job and it ran great until the rockers jumped off the valves and bent 2 rods to 90 degrees. I believe that to be my fault because I'm the one who adjusted them
Just took the whole steering column apart on my 95 Astro Van, it's basically the same. Also tilt and I can tell you it was a pain and getting it back together was even worse.. especially without some special tools that were needed in some places. So I figured out some makeshift tools for it and it worked but of course not as easy or fast as I had hoped for. The mechanism to move that rod is actually pretty sturdy easy to figure out and I think there's just something loose in there that you have to put back together. Anyway, a new column would be easier. xD
Don't throw the ac stuff away! That stuff is gold to us who live in the southern states where it gets to be hotter than the surface of the sun in the summer! Even if the pump is junk and the dryer and evap core are junk, it helps with identification!
Puddin, before you go to tear apart an engine, put a quart of transmission fluid in it and run it for a little while. Transmission fluid has a detergent in it, it will help loosen and break up ll the sludge inside the engine. After you tear it apart and change the valve guides, springs, etc, change the oil. The sludge will mostly be in the oil pan.
Christmas came early, a two hour video from Puddin. A three hour video wouldn’t be long enough from this guy. Great video and good work on the truck. Patiently waiting for the next!
I am 75 now but when I was 12 I had 3 cars and up till now I have had over a thousand. I shortened a few trucks before many people thought about doing it. Back then you could buy short box pickup bed trailers cheap and long box trucks cheaper than sporty short beds. You bring back memories when I was young and tough like you. Keep up the creative ideas and keep all of your fans enjoying you on youtube.
When you bore scoped that cylinder and the top side of that piston was clean but the bottom side was carboned, that is signs that the oil ring is leaking and it's burning some oil in that cylinder. It's called oil wash. Just a heads up.
When we did valve seals we just fed a bunch of nylon rope into cylinder and turned motor by hand till it bound up on the rope then changed valve seals, valves cannot fall because of rope. Worked perfect

I did the same job you guys are doing and I had an old timer teach me a trick that works extremely well since you’ve already got the spark plug pulled out you take a piece of clothesline and you stuff it in the spark plug hole is best you can and then you runthe rod all the way upper piston and it keeps pressure on the valve and then you can do what you want and it’s harder to push the valve down by accident whenever you’re trying to put the keepers back in
I used cotton rope I think 1/4”.
Yep. I also use rope in the cylinder when I’m doing that. Works great.
yea a couple of fella's down in the comments got it right was taught in high school engine class about the rope trick to hold the valves up way to go puddin and bill and merry christmas to puddin's family and bill as well love the video's
Froggys Christmas song is an all time great!
You have inspired me to build my first littel shop which is 24X25 and putting a 1989 full-size Bronco
Puddin, you need a part's washer and an ultrasonic cleaner. 😂
You read my mind…….
Wild Bill! "No better than that".
Puddin time
Merry Christmas Pudding and Family
I know why you lower everything so you can just lean over the fenders to work on the motors with ease.
I believe that to be my fault because I'm the one who adjusted them
thanks for taking the time to share and make the video
Wish we had trucks like that up here, perfect project for my boy and I
Just took the whole steering column apart on my 95 Astro Van, it's basically the same.
Anyway, a new column would be easier. xD
I wan't to thank you for this realy nice Video 👏 All the best for you and the people around you. Stay healhy.
Thanks for the stickers love them keep doing what your doing love the channel
Bill is a giant asset to the channel...no BS...lots of knowledge and no dramatics! You'll be a Bill one day Puddin!...NJ
When punching holes on a wood block, stand the block up in a vise and use the end grain of the block. Usually works better.
Don't throw the ac stuff away! That stuff is gold to us who live in the southern states where it gets to be hotter than the surface of the sun in the summer! Even if the pump is junk and the dryer and evap core are junk, it helps with identification!
Thanks for another good one Puddin! Great progress on this old pickup, and great to see ol' Bill, too!
Well I think the truck is coming along nicely
Great job and good content...good to see Bill working on the build...thanks
Puddin, before you go to tear apart an engine, put a quart of transmission fluid in it and run it for a little while. Transmission fluid has a detergent in it, it will help loosen and break up ll the sludge inside the engine. After you tear it apart and change the valve guides, springs, etc, change the oil. The sludge will mostly be in the oil pan.
Bill is awesome. Nice job you two.
Puddin, i think you are at your best when problem solving and wrenching on old iron. Bill is a real asset for your show!
These are my favorite videos to watch on TH-cam, Puddin is an excellent mechanic and very entertaining to watch.
When we did valve seals we just fed a bunch of nylon rope into cylinder and turned motor by hand till it bound up on the rope then changed valve seals, valves cannot fall because of rope. Worked perfect
