I don't own any rights for the song or any part of it. Wait! Another copyright complaint.
"Heart-Shaped Box" is the first single from "In Utero", with "Marigold", "Milk It" and "Gallons Of Rubbing Alcohol Flow Through The Strip" as b-sides on various editions of the single. It was one of two songs from the album mixed by Scott Litt to augment the original production by producer Steve Albini.
Also, it's the last song Nirvana ever played with Kurt on stage.
Kurt wrote "Heart-Shaped Box" in early 1992 and forgot about the song for a while. He resumed working on it when he and Courtney moved to a house in the Hollywood Hills. She said she overheard him working on the song's riff in a closet, she asked him if she could use the riff for one of her songs, to which he replied "Fuck you!" and closed the closet door. The couple shared a journal in which they would write lyrics; Courtney's songwriting sensibility informed Kurt's on the song. The song's name came from a heart-shaped box Courtney had given Kurt. But the initial title was "Heart-Shaped Coffin".
Nirvana had difficulty completing the song. Kurt attempted to have the rest of the band complete the song during jam sessions. He said, "I was trying to wait for Krist and Dave to come up with something but it just turned into noise all the time." Kurt made one last attempt at completing the song; he was able to come up with a vocal melody and the band finally finished writing the song. Kurt said that when they completed "Heart-Shaped Box", "We finally realized that it was a good song."
In January 1993, the band recorded a demo of "Heart-Shaped Box" during sessions with Craig Montgomery in the BMG Ariola studios in Rio de Janeiro. This version was eventually released on "With The Lights Out".
The "In Utero" version was recorded in February 1993 by Steve Albini in Cannon Falls, Minnesota. Prior to the album's release, the track was remixed by Scott Litt, and the Albini mix can be found on the deluxe edition of the album. Cobain was unapologetic about the band's decision to remix it, and maintained that the vocals and bass were not prominent enough in the original mixes. Novoselic was also unhappy with the original mix of "Heart-Shaped Box". He said, "You should hear the original of that song, the guitar solo had this effect on it, it just sabotages the whole song. Steve and Kurt were colluding! I would go to Kurt, "Why are you sabotaging this beautiful song by putting this hideous abortion in the center of it. He'd be like, "Well, I think it sounds cool". I don't even remember what their arguments were, some statement against commercial radio or something, the popular mainstream aesthetic... I dunno! I guess I finally got my way. Scott Litt was an opportunity to change things". In a 1993 Chicago Sun-Times interview, he also said the original effect used on the song's guitar solo sounded "like a fucking abortion hitting the floor." When the song was remixed by Litt, Cobain took the opportunity to add acoustic guitar and vocal harmonies.
For the video, Nirvana decided to work with director Anton Corbijn. While most of the video was devised by Kurt, Corbijn added crows, the ladder, and the box the band performs in. He also created another cut of the video, I think you can find it on TH-cam.
The first live performance of "Heart-Shaped Box" was in January 1993 in Sao Paolo, a couple of days before the recording session at BMG Ariola. The song closed the setlist at Nirvana's final show, on March 1, 1994, in Munich.
The lyrics manage to convey complex themes of love and entrapment, and deal with aspects of Kurt's relationship with Courtney. Kurt said the song was inspired by documentaries about children with cancer and that the "Hey/Wait/I've got a new complaint" part was an example of how he was perceived by the media. According to Kurt's uncle by marriage, Larry Smith, the line: "Forever in debt to your priceless advice" was used by Cobain to piss off an aunt (Smith's sister) during arguments.
    Lyrics:
She eyes me like a Pisces when I am weak
I've been locked inside your Heart-Shaped box for a week
I was drawn into your magnet tar pit trap
I wish I could eat your cancer when you turn black
    Hey
    Wait
    I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
    Hate
    Haight
    I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
    Hey
    Wait
    I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
Meat-eating orchids forgive no one just yet
Cut myself on angel's hair and baby's breath
Broken hymen of your highness I'm left black
Throw down your umbillical noose so I can climb right back

I almost got a T-bird once, things have quite a bit of weight to them. I love the tones that can come from the T-birds I came across a 1999 5 string Washburn RB2500 BANTAM and got that instead of the T-Bird. I dont regret chosing the Washburn but if I ever have the opportunity to get a T-bird at a decent price again I'm definitely going to do it. Would probably get strap locks if I ever want to walk without fear of it slipping out of the strap.

T-bird is definitely on the heavy side, yeah. If you play on your feet a lot, you better think twice.

T-bird RULEZZ man!! I play it now for years, never regret, but be sure you get a neck thru type. Epiphone is not too expensive, and offers a great quality for your money, comparing tot Gibson. GO for IT!

@@phipschi4255 I can imagine that, it's not an easy to play bass in terms of ergonomics. I play it mostly with a pick and hang it quite low, so you can have the neck a bit high, if you know what I mean. Tuning the G-string is far away haha

Thanks. That was long ago and I don't exactly remember the settings, but most likely I tried to make it as bassy as possible. Lows knob to the max, mids and trebles to zero on amp. Same approach for the bass.
