  • I'm turning three dwarf mushrooms on the end of
    a log. The first one is turned off-center on the log end. The other two mushrooms are turned separately and glued in place. This is an easy and quick project.

    Wonderful. I turned a lot of mushrooms with natural edge (also on video). Never made a little landscape like this. I like it.

      @@RickTurnsWoodturning Yes, its mostly up and running. Still waiting on electrical, but using extension cords. I'm not sure I want to do videos. At first I thought it was a great idea. But I think I'm a little shy to put myself out there like that. I have posted most of what I've done on Instagram, including the beginnings of my project for the Christmas project. But an unscheduled trip to Thailand put off schedule, and I don't think I can finish it by the deadline. So I decided to stop working on it until after so I don't rush it, then use it for next year.

    Clever idea for a gift. I think I’ll do something similar but make little Christmas trees instead of mushrooms. Thanks for all your instructive video. You give me more confidence to try new thing on my lathe.

    Hello from 🇨🇦. Rick. I have to say. That turned out much better than I had thought. Great idea.
    You mentioned it was green branches. After all this time did they crack and if so , do they still look good or is it firewood now?
    You make it look so easy, that’s a sign of a very skilled turner 👍🏼

    • @RickTurnsWoodturning
      @RickTurnsWoodturning  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The base did crack, quite a bit. Disappointing, but not unexpected. Thanks for watching, Mr B

  • @monophoto1
    @monophoto1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very nice. But a minor issue - the mushrooms in my yard are rarely perfectly vertical, and the caps are rarely exactly perpendicular to the shaft.
    Perhaps there could be a version B in which some (perhaps the two 'daughter' mushrooms) are turned 'off axis' to add a little interest.

    • @RickTurnsWoodturning
      @RickTurnsWoodturning  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Louie. Good point on the verticality. Turning the base completely separately from the mushrooms and making the top curved instead of flat would fix that. That's what I'll do if I make another.

  • @paulbrown7936
    @paulbrown7936 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Rick, I really enjoy watching your videos and appreciate you actually showing your mistakes. I feel bad for you every time it happens. I was curious about this mushroom video. Since you turned 2 of the mushrooms separately why turn the first one on the log?

    • @RickTurnsWoodturning
      @RickTurnsWoodturning  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question, Paul! When I started, I was only going to have a single mushroom, and I wanted to experiment a little with off-center turning. After I got that one done, it looked kind of awkward, so I decided to do a couple of smaller ones, and mount them beside the first. It would have been simpler to do all three mushrooms separately of course. Thanks for watching, Paul.

      @@RickTurnsWoodturning I know this was a few years ago, but I've been studying off center turning and have seen others turn curved stems separately. Is this something you could do and maybe demonstrate? Great Video by the way.

      @RickTurnsWoodturning  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Scott. I’ve done some off-center turning, making bowls. I like the way they look. I’ve seen other turners doing off-center stems on goblets, but I’ve never liked the results, so I’ve never tried that. Sorry i can’t help you out on this. Thanks for watching my videos!

    Great video, May i ask what kind of drill bit that was used, Thank you

    • @RickTurnsWoodturning
      @RickTurnsWoodturning  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a quarter-inch forstner bit (that needs sharpening). Forstner bits cut a much cleaner hole than a twist drill or brad point drill.

    I haven't had any luck turning log with the pith left in it. Do you have a trick so that It won't crack? The few that I tried all cracked.
    PS I'm a beginner. Thank You

    • @RickTurnsWoodturning
      @RickTurnsWoodturning  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I don't think there's any way to keep it from cracking, except prayer perhaps. The first mushroom piece I turned like this did not crack (at least so far), but this one developed a crack several days after I finished the video. However, since none of the mushrooms are on top of the crack, it still looks okay.

      The first time that I turned with the pith in I was taking a class on sphere turning. I did a good job on the sphere and I was lucky..... 2 days later a got a bonus. Just like magic I had a PackMan. How lucky can you get

    Very nice job, would you recommend trying to do this on a mini lathe ?

    • @RickTurnsWoodturning
      @RickTurnsWoodturning  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      On a mini-lathe, the off-center part would probably be difficult. However just turn the base, without the off-center mushroom, then mount the mushroom off-center. I probably should have done it that way, it would have looked just as good and been easier and faster to turn. Thanks for watching, Ken.

    • @RickTurnsWoodturning

      Hi, Truth! I’m 69 years old. I’ve been woodturning for quite some years now. I started when I was about 28, on a very low-end lathe from Sears. I had been doing basic woodworking and was looking around for something similar to do. So I did woodturning for 10 years or so, then dropped it for some years as other things in my life took over. Fifteen or twenty years ago, I revisited it, got really into again, bought a real lathe, and around 4 years ago, I started doing some videos and started my TH-cam channel. I have since stepped up to a Powermatic 3520 lathe and a workshop that’s not in my garage. Thanks for your interest, and thanks for watching my videos!
