Favorites during my visit -- Pierogi; Bigos - stew; Golabki - cabbage rolls; Pasztet - pâté; Rosól - chicken soup; Florentynki - florentine cookie; Kołaczki - rolled cookie with fillings; *_Vodka_* 😀👍

Your 'origin story' of zapiekanka is surprisingly close to truth. They were born in the 70. when comunist regim cooled down a little bit and allowed some small buissnesses to be. Sinse there was close to nothing on the shelfs, people would mash together baguettes, mushroom and onions or whataever was available at the time. Nowadays you can buy them with more fancy stuff - rucola, shrimps, goat cheese, yada yada, but classic is a classic.

If you are in Kraków right now, you can try find some of ours "bar mleczny" restaurants theyre very cheap and have traditional food too
there's great Pierogi place on Slawkowska street, it's called "Przypiecek" and they have the most delicious pierogi I've ever eaten. I always eat there when I have a break between classes :)

The best dish in Poland is silesian beef roulade with potato dumplings (they are without any filling) and red cabbage

I would also say: Poland is a very vegetarian-friendly place! Sure, LOTS of dishes are meat-based. But there is also a huge variety of vegetarian, or even vegan food (Catholic heritage, lots of fasting back in the days). You can get a lot of fish as well (especially local freshwater fish like trout, zander, or carp. Wels is great too, although it's not freshwater).
Also many traditional dishes get a modern make-over in many places (things like pierogi made with spelt or wholegrain flour, or with spinach and feta, or pumpkin puree, even guacamole), or an interesting fusion with some other cuisine(s).
For the taste of water: it often depends on the quality of the pipes of your building, and on the city/town your're in. It's always safe to drink, it's only a matter of taste. I personally am not very fond of Warsaw water, I usually add a slice of lemon to it.
For typically Polish food I would also recommmend "kotlet de volaille" - a chicken breast roll, classically stuffed with butter , but sometimes comes with cheese and mushrooms too.
Sweets and candy t find in stores: Delicje (a soft bisquit with fruit jelly and chocolate icing) and Ptasie Mleczko (milk souffle in chocolate cover).
I would also try Polish soft cheese: twaróg (or twarożek). It's a classic for breakfast. You can cut it in slices and eat on a bread with some kosher salt and butter, or make a paste with some sour creme or yoghurt, spring onions/chives and radishes.
And sałatka jarzynowa, or veggie salat. Every house make it, and it tastes a bit different in every house. It's a salad made of cooked potatoes, eggs, cooked carrots, pickles, canned grean peas, and some others, depending on preference (celery, parsley root, onions, corn, apples), with mayo. Can be eaten solo or as a side dish.
And there is also mizeria, a side dish made of fresh cucumbers, sour cream (or yoghurt), and lots of dill. Great for schnitzel or chicken.
In the summer I would definately try chłodnik litewski, a gazpacho-style cold soup made of beetroots and sour milk/buttermilk/yoghurt (yes, it's colour it hot pink, but it's not readioactive!).
There, I named seven dishes, non of them with cabbage :D

A great review as always. Thank you for stating pierogi instead of pierogis. In my view Poland indeed has one of the best soups. My favorite alcoholic drink in miód pitny - mead. Poland has a long tradition with this drink. My favorite treat is sękacz but I believe you can only get it in the eastern part of Poland.

After 3 months in Poland last summer, I found filet mignon a common steak offered everywhere. No beaver. The soups and breads are the best anywhere you go in Poland. The milk bars are awesome and very inexpensive as you’ve mentioned before.
2:11 sounds like it might be a poppy seed roll. My Italian relatives from the Youngstown area have those shipped every holiday. Here in the Chicago area my go to Polish place is Czerwone Jabluszko or Red Apple Buffet where they have have most of these. Hoping to try them in Warszawa when we can travel again.

Actually the pronunciation is THE EASY PART of learning Polish .... Yeah, the words only look hard to say, but once you sound them out, and learn the various sound combos and such the rest of it will come easily.

My family came from the Tatra's and I would like to spend some time there exploring genealogy and getting a sense of what life might have been like there for my ancestors.
Polish food is the best! and i am not even Polish lol...but i really enjoyed the traditional polish good when i ate at Restaurants in Warsaw and Poznan. Everything was always fresh and delicious and good quality food.

My family still has Vigelia, ( I hope that's spelled correctly). It's a traditional Polish Christmas Eve dinner. We usually have homemade pierogi and traditional Polish mushroom soup with a couple of sides. The only problem is I wish Christmas would be celebrated every month.

Samantha Gaudet 3:10 Try oscypek with cranberries. If you like smaller cities with wonderful architecture, see Zamość, It is on the UNESCO list. In Canada, you will not see something like that. A good one-day trip.

In june I have about 4 and a half day in Poland. I'm staying in Krakow. Two days are fully planned (Energylandia) and one half planned (Legendia). I think the rest of the time will be spent eating.
I studied in Poland this past summer. Go to Restaurant Ed Red. There is one in both Warsaw and Krakow. Also get Sernik and cappacino at awiteks. And get up early and get an Obwarzanek in Krakow, but only buy in the morning when they are fresh.

The last step - frying the fluor in butter - is optional. Many cooks put ribs or other bones at the begging with the veggies. And dried wild forest mushrooms! 💚 It's important to add the cabbage at the end because it's acidic and the potatoes won't cook well.
A similar dish is pickle soup, you just add shredded pickles instead of the sauerkraut 😉

Its funny since every Traditional polish restaurant has exact same stuff.. what does get boring ish.
I also had the pleasure to eat cow stomach soup.... What i liked tilll my slavic girlfriend told me what the weirdly slimey stuff were....
Thomas Elzinga It is called “flaki” and it’s definitely one of these dishes that you have to be careful with when showing it to foreigners, but almost every Pole likes it and it’s REALLY filling.

Traditional Polisf food looks same, because after the WW2 Poles was exiled from east part of old Polish borders (this day, Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania) to core Polish lands.
Result is Poles are very mixed up and there is no very much difference in Poles, it's only few dialects now.

When it comes to the soups, there is only one queen in Poland and her name is "zupa ogórkowa" ; it's a cucumber soup, it's made from a specially prepared cucumbers - "ogórki kiszone" (

I'm Polish and I love zapiekankas. It's like pizza, but on a baguette. You can have any toppings and any sauce, on some good ol' melted cheese, all on a hot and crispy baguette. Hell, you can even decorate it with some ketchup/mayo/mustard on top...

4 weeks and i will be for 9 days in warsaw. I am glad that i rented my apartment in old town right above a tea house. 9 days 2 pounds per day should fit gaining weight🤣🤣🤣
You're right about the tea. I drink tea for as long as I can remember, probably since I was 2 years old. I think it's safe to say, that tea is number one beverage in Poland. Everybody I know drinks it by the "gallons".

I love pickled herring both in white wine sauce and sour cream sauce. I also love the sausage made with barley blood and organ meat.
Kanapki in the morning by 11 my grandmother already making soup then obiad is at 2pm and kolacja at 6pm. Polish people don't eat dinner at 5 or 6 that is supper

Hi. Love the vidoes. Just wanted to ask if for the flavor of pierogi, you meant either the farmers cheese-potato mix or the sweet cheese. Cottage cheese wouldn't work as it has too much moisture to be used as filling for pierogi.

If you like pierogi and want a really fun experience in Krakow I went on this cooking course: www.deliciouspoland.com/pierogi-cooking-class/ - the teacher is a little old lady who has been making them for 50 years and they do the class in a little restaurant outside of the city. Highly recommended.
The doner kebab in Poland is quite different than anywhere else (it is very localised). There is always the search for the best one. You should try it.
Also the 'schnitzel' is schabowy, the most popular dish with fried sour croute and potatoes (the national dish).
The other 'must have' dish is tatar (raw beef) with vodka. Look for it in any shot bar.
Rosół, żurek, barszcz czerwony, pierogi, polska kiełbasa Polish sausage, oscypek z żurawiną, kopytka z sosem pieczeniowym, kapusta kiszona, pierogi z kapustą kiszoną, pierogi z mięsem. Ogórek kiszony, smalec. Kluski śląskie. Ps. Jak to ładnie mówisz kiełbasa nie jest daniem only produktem thank you.

Don't forget folks about the size of dishes in Poland once you come. Some restaurants, specially those called "KARCZMA" serve a huge sized dishes like Kotlet Schabowy (Wiener Schnitzel) that is in size of half of the big plate! 😎

Beat soup w/ dumplings is a delicious must. Also do Flaki and Tatar. A shot of vodka is welcomed after you had those two.
